Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) often co-occur and present significant treatment challenges. Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is a widely used, efficacious treatment for PTSD, but the application of CPT among individuals with co-occurring PTSD/AUD has been limited. To address this gap, we developed a novel, 12-session trauma-focused treatment that combines CPT with Relapse Prevention (RP) for AUD (CPT+RP). This paper describes CPT+RP and presents preliminary outcomes from the first six participants enrolled in a larger, ongoing multisite clinical trial of CPT+RP. PTSD symptoms were assessed using the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5 (CAPS-5) and PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5). The Timeline Follow-Back (TLFB) assessed frequency (percent days drinking; PDD) and quantity (drinks per drinking day; DDD) of alcohol use, and craving was measured using the Penn Alcohol Craving Scale (PACS). The Client Satisfaction Questionnaire measured acceptability. Pre- to post-treatment reductions were observed in PTSD symptoms (ΔMCAPS-5 = 14.00; ΔMPCL-5 = 20.50), frequency and quantity of alcohol use (ΔMPDD = 38.65; ΔMDDD = 6.24), and craving (ΔPACS = 6.17). Most participants achieved clinically significant improvement in their PTSD symptoms and acceptability was high. Although preliminary, the findings suggest the new CPT+RP intervention is feasible, acceptable, and a promising treatment innovation for co-occurring PTSD and AUD. Full article

We examined the associations between individual differences in intensive longitudinal data-derived affective dynamics (i.e., positive and negative affect variability and inertia and positive affect–negative affect bipolarity) and concurrent stress, drinking levels, and affect-regulation drinking motives across three time points spanning early adulthood. This allowed us to evaluate the stability of the affective dynamics and whether their associations with alcohol outcomes varied across this critical developmental period. Moderate-to-heavy college drinkers (N = 1139, 51% women) reported on their affective states, stress, drinking levels, and drinking motives daily for 30 days using a web-based daily diary in three assessment waves: during college and at two post-college waves, approximately 5 and 10 years after the initial assessment. Findings indicated moderate stability of the affect dynamic indicators, except for inertia. Negative affect variability showed the strongest positive association with mean daily stress. Individuals who demonstrated stronger affect bipolarity had lower drinking levels and higher enhancement motivation. None of the other dynamic indicators were consistently related to the drinking outcomes in the predicted direction after controlling for mean affect levels, and we found little evidence for changes in these effects across time. Our results add to the inconsistent literature regarding the associations between affective dynamics and alcohol-related outcomes. Full article

The repair efficiency of various self-healing materials often depends on the ability of the prepolymer and curing agent to form mixtures. This paper presents a synthesis and study of the properties of modified self-healing polyurethanes using the Diels–Alder reaction (DA reaction), obtained from a maleimide-terminated preform and a series of furan–urethane curing agents. The most commonly used isocyanates (4,4′-methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI), 2,4-tolylene diisocyanate (TDI), and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI)) and furan derivatives (furfurylamine, difurfurylamine, and furfuryl alcohol) were used as initial reagents for the synthesis of curing agents. For comparative analysis, polyurethanes were also obtained using the well-known “traditional” approach—from furan-terminated prepolymers based on mono- and difurfurylamine, as well as furfuryl alcohol and the often-used bismaleimide curing agent 1,10-(methylenedi-1,4-phenylene)bismaleimide (BMI). The structure and composition of all polymers were studied using spectroscopic methods. Molecular mass was determined using gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Thermal properties were studied using TGA, DSC, and TMA methods. The mechanical and self-healing properties of the materials were investigated via a uniaxial tensile test. Visual assessment of the completeness of damage restoration after the self-healing cycle was carried out using a scanning electron microscope. It was shown that the proposed modified approach helps obtain more durable polyurethanes with a high degree of self-healing of mechanical properties after damage. Full article

Chronic ethanol use can lead to alcoholic cardiomyopathy (ACM), while the impact on the molecular and cellular aspects of the myocardium is unclear. Accordingly, male Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to an ethanol-containing diet for 16 weeks and compared with a control group that was fed an isocaloric diet. Histological measurements from H&E slides revealed no significant differences in cell size. A proteomic approach revealed that alcohol exposure leads to enhanced mitochondrial lipid metabolism, and electron microscopy revealed impairments in mitochondrial morphology/density. Cardiac myosin purified from the hearts of ethanol-exposed animals demonstrated a 15% reduction in high-salt ATPase activity, with no significant changes in the in vitro motility and low-salt ATPase or formation of the super-relaxed (SRX) state. A protein carbonyl assay indicated a 20% increase in carbonyl incorporation, suggesting that alcohol may impact cardiac myosin through oxidative stress mechanisms. In vitro oxidation of healthy cardiac myosin revealed a dramatic decline in ATPase activity and in vitro motility, demonstrating a link between myosin protein oxidation and myosin mechanochemistry. Collectively, this study suggests alcohol-induced metabolic remodeling may be the initial insult that eventually leads to defects in the contractile machinery in the myocardium of ACM hearts. To address the growing demand for environmentally friendly flexible sensors, here, a composite hydrogel of nanocellulose (NC) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was designed and fabricated using Camellia oleifera shells as a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based raw materials. Firstly, NC was extracted from Camellia oleifera shells and modified with 2-chloropropyl chloride to obtain a nanocellulose-based initiator (Init-NC) for atomic transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Subsequently, sulfonyl betaine methacrylate (SBMA) was polymerized by Init-NC initiating to yield zwitterion-functionalized nanocellulose (NC-PSBMA). Finally, the NC-PSBMA/PVA hydrogel was fabricated by blending NC-PSBMA with PVA. A Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer (1H-NMR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), universal mechanical testing machine, and digital source-meter were used to characterize the chemical structure, surface microstructure, and sensing performance. The results indicated that: (1) FT-IR and 1H NMR confirmed the successful synthesis of NC-PSBMA; (2) SEM, TEM, and alternating current (AC) impedance spectroscopy verified that the NC-PSBMA/PVA hydrogel exhibits a uniform porous structure (pore diameter was 1.1737 μm), resulting in significantly better porosity (15.75%) and ionic conductivity (2.652 S·m−1) compared to the pure PVA hydrogel; and (3) mechanical testing combined with source meter testing showed that the tensile strength of the composite hydrogel increased by 6.4 times compared to the pure PVA hydrogel; meanwhile, it showed a high sensitivity (GF = 1.40, strain range 0–5%; GF = 1.67, strain range 5–20%) and rapid response time (<0.05 s). This study presents a novel approach to developing bio-based, flexible sensing materials. Full article

Nanocellulose-based composite aerogels have the advantages of high porosity, biodegradability, and biocompatibility, with wide applications in many fields, such as adsorption, separation, energy storage, and heat insulation. In this study, a nanocellulose-based composite aerogel (NCA) was prepared using the one-pot method with cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), tannic acid (TA), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as raw materials. The adsorption behaviors of Pb2+, Cd2+, and Cu2+ were also studied. FT-IR analysis confirmed that TA successfully solidified on the nanocellulose, while SEM analysis revealed that the prepared NCA exhibited significantly higher porosity compared with the cellulose nanofibril-only aerogel. The results of the adsorption experiment demonstrated that the adsorption behavior of heavy metal ions using the prepared NCA followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. The adsorption isotherms fit well with the Langmuir adsorption model, indicating that the process of aerogels adsorbing heavy metal ions is that of monolayer adsorption. Under conditions of pH 6 and an initial heavy metal ion concentration of 100 mg/L, the maximum adsorption capacity calculated for the prepared NCA was up to 196.850 mg/g, 181.488 mg/g, and 151.515 mg/g for Cu2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+, respectively. Furthermore, the prepared NCA exhibited excellent reusability, with more than 90% efficiency retained after three cycles. NCAs have the potential to become an efficient material for absorbing heavy metal ions in water. Full article

Background/Objectives: Bisphosphonates may influence vascular calcification and atheroma formation via farnesyl pyrophosphate synthase inhibition in the mevalonate pathway regulating bone and lipid metabolism. However, the clinical impact of NCB use on cardiovascular outcomes remains uncertain, largely due to methodological heterogeneity in prior studies. We aimed to evaluate the association between nitrogen-containing bisphosphonate (NCB) therapy and coronary artery calcium (CAC) progression, as well as the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and coronary heart disease (CHD) events. Methods: From 6814 participants in MESA Exam 1, we excluded males (insufficient male NCB users in the MESA cohort), pre-menopausal women, baseline NCB users, and users of hormone replacement therapy, raloxifene, or calcitonin. Among 166 NCB initiators and 1571 non-users with available CAC measurements, propensity score matching was performed using the available components of FRAX, namely age, race, BMI, LDL cholesterol, alcohol, smoking, and steroid use, and baseline CAC yielded 165 NCB initiators matched to 473 non-users (1:3 ratio). Linear mixed-effects models evaluated CAC progression, and Cox models analyzed incident CVD and CHD events. Results: In the overall cohort, NCB use was not significantly associated with CAC progression (annual change: −0.01 log Agatston units; 95% CI: −0.05 to 0.01). However, among participants with a baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) < 65 mL/min/1.73 m2, NCB use was associated with attenuated CAC progression compared with non-users (−0.06 log Agatston units/year; 95% CI: −0.12 to −0.007). No significant association was observed between NCB use and incident CVD events in the overall cohort (HR: 0.90; 95% CI: 0.60−1.36) or within kidney function subgroups. Conclusions: Incident NCB use among postmenopausal women with mild or no CAC at baseline was associated with reduced CAC progression only in women with impaired kidney function. However, this association did not correspond to a decreased risk of subsequent cardiovascular events, suggesting that the observed imaging benefit may not translate into meaningful clinical association. Alcohol harm continues to present a public health priority. Whilst we know that a relationship exists between exposure to content and alcohol initiation and use in young people, the mechanism behind this effect is not well understood. Using the social identity approach as a meaning-making lens, a systematic review of the qualitative literature and meta-synthesis was conducted using Medline (all years), Embase (all years), and PsycINFO (all years). The inclusion criteria included studies which qualitatively explored the effect of exposure to content or marketing in young people (aged < 26). Twenty-two articles were identified and included in the synthesis and assessed for bias using the Downe and Walsh checklist. Four themes were identified: normalisation of alcohol use, branding and identity, marketing strategies, and acting in identity congruence. A line of argument was constructed arguing that alcohol content and marketing are often targeted at and work through social identities and cultural norms to normalise alcohol use and lead to increased consumption through embedding content and marketing in culture. These findings have implications for stricter regulations around alcohol marketing and the protection of young people from alcohol content. Full article

The use of astaxanthin (AST) is expanding from its origins as a food coloring to health-related applications. This paper evaluates the efficiency of its extraction from dried Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous using two combined and consecutive techniques. First, cell membrane permeation is achieved with the application of pulsed electric fields (PEFs). Solid–liquid extraction is then performed with hydrophobic eutectic solvents (hESs) prepared by mixing components of essential oils (linalool, l-menthol, eugenol, geraniol, cinnamyl alcohol, or thymol) and oleic acid. The hESs were characterized by measuring of several thermophysical properties at 25 °C and 0.1 MPa. An initial screening was performed to choose the best solvent and the extraction conditions (composition, extraction time, and temperature) were evaluated using the response surface methodology. The results showed the importance of the electroporation as a preliminary step to the extraction. The more hydrophobic and less compact the hES, the more effective the solvent. Thus, the equimolar mixture of l-menthol and oleic acid achieved an efficiency of 77% for untreated biomass, 83% for that treated with PEF, and 92% for that treated with PEF and later incubated. Molecular dynamics simulations demonstrated the importance of the hydrophobic interactions between AST and the components of the best solvent. Full article

Background/Objectives: Cognitive deficiency associated with chronic alcohol consumption in older people remains an under-investigated public health issue in Romania, particularly concerning rural–urban disparities and the impact of reversible hepatic dysfunction on cognitive performance. To evaluate cognitive function at hospital admission and discharge using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE); to identify rural–urban disparities; and to analyze the relationship between hepatic markers and MMSE scores in older people with chronic alcohol consumption. Methods: This retrospective, single-center observational study was conducted on 152 patients aged ≥55 years, hospitalized between January 2021 and December 2023 at the “Elisabeta Doamna” Psychiatric Hospital, Galați. Demographic variables, MMSE scores (at admission and discharge), and hepatic parameters (AST, ALT, GGT, total bilirubin, and ammonia) were collected. Statistical analysis included descriptive statistics, chi-square tests for categorical variables, paired t-tests or ANOVA for MMSE scores, and Pearson correlations between MMSE and hepatic markers (α = 0.05). Results: At admission, 94% of patients had an MMSE score < 24. The mean MMSE score increased from 23.4 ± 4.1 to 25.0 ± 3.7 at discharge (Δ = +1.6; p < 0.001). Patients from rural areas (63.8% of the sample) had significantly lower MMSE scores at admission compared to urban patients (22.6 ± 3.9 vs. 24.8 ± 4.2; p = 0.02). However, no statistically significant difference was observed between rural and urban patients regarding cognitive improvement during hospitalization (p = 0.88), indicating that the initial gap persisted at discharge. GGT levels were inversely correlated with MMSE scores (r = −0.41; p < 0.001), suggesting a contribution of hepatic dysfunction to cognitive decline. Conclusions: Alcohol-related cognitive impairment is highly prevalent among older patients hospitalized for withdrawal, with partial reversibility observed through inpatient management. The observed rural disparities and the association between hepatic dysfunction and cognitive performance highlight the need of concurrent MMSE and hepatic screening, with prioritized interventions in rural settings. Prospective, multicenter studies are warranted to validate these findings and to identify additional prognostic biomarkers. Full article

This paper presents an analysis of the severity of alcohol use disorder (AUD) based on electroencephalogram (EEG) signals and alcohol drinking experiments by utilizing power spectral density (PSD) and the transitions that occur as individuals drink alcohol in increasing amounts. We use data from brain—computer interface (BCI) experiments using alcohol as a stimulus recorded from a group of seventeen alcohol-drinking male participants and the assessment scores of the alcohol use disorders identification test (AUDIT). This method investigates the mild, moderate, and severe symptoms of AUD using the three key domains of AUDIT, which are hazardous alcohol use, dependence symptoms, and severe alcohol use. We utilize the EEG spectral power of the theta, alpha, and beta frequency bands by observing the transitions from the initial to the final phase of alcohol consumption. Our results are compared for people with low-risk alcohol consumption, harmful or hazardous alcohol consumption, and lastly a likelihood of AUD based on the individual assessment scores of the AUDIT. We use Balanced Iterative Reducing and Clustering using Hierarchies (BIRCH) to cluster the results of the transitions in EEG signals and the overall brain activity of all the participants for the entire duration of the alcohol-drinking experiments. This study can be useful in creating an automatic AUD severity level detection tool for alcoholics to aid in early intervention and supplement evaluations by mental health professionals. Full article

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is a type of liver disease with complex pathogenic factors. In 2019, alcohol caused 11 million life-years to be lost globally, and the mortality rate has continued to rise. This study aims to explore the exclusive gene profile of AH and construct an mRNA-lncRNA regulatory network through an integrative analysis and database validation to reveal potential key biomarkers. We obtained expression data for alcoholic hepatitis from the GEO database; screened differentially expressed genes (DEGs) through a weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA); conducted a GO&KEGG analysis; and focused on the enrichment pathways for the top 20 genes. Hub genes were selected using cytoHubba and MCODE to construct the mRNA-lncRNA regulatory network, and key genes were confirmed using GSE167308 and GSE28619. We obtained 2552 differentially expressed mRNAs and 555 differentially expressed lncRNAs from three databases. Differentially expressed genes are mainly involved in pathways such as lipid metabolism disorders, complement activation, the activation of cancer-related pathways, the excessive activation of inflammatory immunity, and the initiation of cell adhesion and fibrosis. Based on the hub gene analysis, we screened out 43 key genes. By constructing the key mRNA-lncRNA–pathway network, we identified 12 mRNAs (AQP1, ELOVL7, ITPR3, KRT19, KRT23, LAMC2, MMP7, PROM1, SPINT1, STK39, TNFRSF21, and VTCN1) and 14 lncRNAs that play an important role in the occurrence and development of alcoholic hepatitis. To sum up, this article mainly expounds upon the key genes in the occurrence and development of alcoholic hepatitis. The key genes are mainly concentrated within signaling pathways such as metabolic pathways, fatty acid metabolism, and cancer pathways. Twelve differentially expressed mRNAs in the co-expression network can be used as biomarkers and intervention targets for the diagnosis and treatment of alcoholic hepatitis. Full article

Background/Objectives: Sexual attitudes, particularly those on the erotophilia (positive openness) to erotophobia (negative fear) scales, play a critical role in shaping behaviors and health decisions. While associations between sexual behavior and substance use have been documented, limited research has explored how sexual attitudes relate to mental health and substance use among Latin American university populations. This study aimed to examine the associations among erotophilic attitudes, mental health symptoms (anxiety and depression), substance use risk, and sexual behaviors in Mexican university students. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted between 2019 and 2023 with 1475 undergraduate students aged 17–25 years. Participants completed the Revised Sexual Opinion Survey (R-SOS) to assess sexual attitudes, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) for mental health evaluation, and adapted items from the Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST) to measure substance use risk. Erotophilic attitudes were defined as R-SOS scores ≥ 70. Statistical tests included the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test for normality, t-tests or Mann–Whitney U tests for group comparisons, Fisher’s exact test for categorical variables, and Spearman’s correlations. Multivariate binary logistic regression was used to calculate adjusted odds ratios (AdORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), with a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: Erotophilic students were more likely to be male, older, initiate sexual activity earlier, and report a greater number of sexual partners. Erotophilia was positively associated with anxiety and tobacco, alcohol and marijuana use, and negatively associated with depressive symptoms. Multivariate analysis indicated that erotophilia was independently associated with male sex, age ≥ 20, higher anxiety, lower depression, low socioeconomic status, and increased risk of tobacco and marijuana use. Lower rates of consistent condom use were also reported among erotophilic individuals. Conclusions: Erotophilia may serve as a behavioral risk marker linked to anxiety symptoms and increased substance use, but not to depression. These findings highlight the need for integrated interventions addressing sexual health, substance use, and mental well-being in university populations. Full article

The concomitant utilization of flavonoids and α-tocopherol has the potential to establish a comprehensive antioxidant system that operates in both hydrophilic and lipophilic environments. The objective of this study was to examine the antioxidant interactions between dihydroquercetin, a flavonoid that has shown promise in various studies, as well as structurally related flavonoids, and α-tocopherol in various ratios. The antioxidant capacity was assessed using two ABTS•+ radical-cation inhibition assays: a decolorization assay and a lag-time assay. The results of this study indicated that formulations of dihydroquercetin, quercetin, rutin, or morin with α-tocopherol exhibited additive or mildly subadditive interactions, independent of their ratios. A two-phase pattern was exhibited by the lag-time data, which, in comparison with individual components, allowed us to suggest that α-tocopherol appeared to dominate the initial phase of radical scavenging, while flavonoids became active in the later phase. This finding indicates that α-tocopherol may play a role in protecting flavonoids from premature oxidation in alcoholic media. The findings could prove valuable for the rational design of antioxidant formulations in the nutraceutical, cosmeceutical, and pharmaceutical industries. Additionally, the two-stage antioxidant behavior offers prospects for the formulation of straightforward, cost-effective analytical approaches to measure components in binary antioxidant formulations. The incorporation of Mg into PtCoAl catalysts was systematically investigated to elucidate its impact on the physicochemical properties and catalytic performance in CO2 hydrogenation. A series of x% Mg-PtCoAl catalysts with varying Mg contents were synthesized and evaluated for CO2 hydrogenation. The results demonstrate that Mg acts as a promoter by strengthening metal–support interactions, slightly suppressing reducibility while markedly enhancing hydrogen adsorption capacity and the number of basic sites. Additionally, an optimal Mg content increases the proportion of weak basic sites, which synergistically facilitates CO2 activation in conjunction with weakly adsorbed hydrogen. The effects of Pt and Mg loadings were further investigated using different precipitants, revealing that moderate loadings (Pt: 0.11–0.12 mmol gcat−1, Mg: 0.08–0.10 mmol gcat−1) most effectively enhance catalytic activity. Under an initial pressure of 4 MPa and 180 °C, the Mg-modified PtCoAl catalyst achieved a methane productivity of 51.4 mmol gcat−1 h−1 and an alcohol productivity of 0.895 mmol gcat−1 h−1, with higher alcohols accounting for 33.6% of the total alcohol products. This study underscores the pivotal role of Mg in tuning surface basicity and hydrogen adsorption properties, offering valuable insights for the rational design of efficient CO2 hydrogenation catalysts.
