The lack of precise definitions in plastics-related terminology continues to hinder the development of coherent sustainability strategies across the materials value chain. This communication revisits current definitions of plastics, polymers, and bioplastics, distinguishing between source (bio-based vs. fossil-based), structure (synthetic vs. natural polymer), and degradation behaviour (persistent vs. compostable or biodegradable). It critiques ambiguous classifications promoted in policy and marketing discourse. It introduces the concept of “Zero-Trace Plastic” (ZTP) to refer to materials that are non-plastic substitutes intended for versatile plastic-like uses while guaranteeing no trace of synthetic plastics in their composition and no contribution to pollution across their lifecycle. The ZTPframework prioritises complete mineralisation without plastic or microplastics or chemical residues under real-world conditions. ZTP is proposed not as a replacement for existing biodegradability standards, but it helps distinguish between plastic and non-plastic biopolymers and works as a complementary benchmark for biodegradability that aligns with and extends them by incorporating environmental specificity and system-wide traceability. The paper proposes a harmonised terminology matrix and calls for coordinated efforts by international agencies and standardisation institutes, national bodies and industries to avoid using misleading terminologies like bioplastics, often used for greenwashing and to enhance circular material strategies. The Diamond Sutra (Vajracchedikā-Prajñāpāramitā-Sūtra) translated by the Sui Dynasty monk Dharmagupta is the fourth Chinese rendition of the Diamond Sutra. Characterized by unprecedented linguistic opacity and syntactic complexity within the history of Buddhist textual transmission, this translation’s distinctive features have attracted significant scholarly attention. This study synthesizes existing academic perspectives and employs Sanskrit–Chinese textual criticism and comparative analysis of parallel translations to conduct a granular examination of Dharmagupta’s retranslation. Our findings reveal that this text fundamentally deviates from conventional sutras designed for religious dissemination or liturgical recitation. Its defining traits, including morphological calquing of Sanskrit structures, simplified pronominal systems, and etymologically prioritized equivalence, collectively reflect a pedagogical focus characteristic of language instructional texts. Dharmagupta’s approach epitomizes a translation-as-pedagogy paradigm, with the text’s deviations from conventional norms resulting from the interplay of religious development, historical context, and translator agency. We argue that the Diamond Sutra retranslation constitutes a radical experimental paradigm in translation history, warranting re-evaluation of its significance within the broader trajectory of Buddhist textual practice. The implementation of Building Information Modelling (BIM) in public design processes enhances efficiency, transparency, and sustainability. However, public agencies often encounter significant barriers, particularly regarding organisational and managerial readiness. This study develops a BIM implementation framework tailored to the specific needs of an Italian public agency. The research adopts a qualitative approach, combining 15 semi-structured interviews with process mapping Using (Business Process Modeling Notation) BPMN. The current as-is workflows were analysed and validated by internal stakeholders. Based on this analysis, strategic objectives were defined, relevant (Building Information Modelling) BIM uses were selected, and revised to-be processes were proposed, integrating new roles and responsibilities according to the standards. The framework addresses both technical and organisational dimensions of BIM adoption, highlighting the need for training, coordination, and stakeholder engagement. The main outcomes include a structured process model, a priority-based selection of BIM uses, and a role matrix supporting organisational transformation. The added value for researchers lies in the replicable methodology that combines empirical process mapping with implementation planning. For practitioners, especially consultants in sustainable design, the study offers a practical roadmap for aligning BIM adoption with project goals, regulatory compliance, and environmental performance targets in complex public sector contexts. Women’s decision-making autonomy is widely recognized as a critical determinant of maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH). However, prevailing measures often conflate genuine autonomy with decisions made within traditional gender roles, risking an overstatement of women’s empowerment. This study examines the extent to which reported female decision-making autonomy reflects authentic agency versus role-based compliance in a patriarchal context. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 280 male household heads in Kakamega County, Kenya, whose partners were pregnant or recently postpartum. Using multi-stage cluster sampling and structured interviews, men reported on household and MNCH decision-making and their rationales, categorized as gender-role conformity, belief in gender equality, or other reasons. Although 40.4% reported that their partners made decisions independently, only 11.4% attributed it to a belief in women’s equality; 28% framed it within traditional gender roles. Men were over four times more likely to perceive women’s decisions as role-based than autonomous (AOR = 4.40; 95% CI: 2.48–5.78). Younger men (18–34) were more likely to report female decision-making (AOR = 5.54; 95% CI: 5.08–7.27), without necessarily endorsing egalitarian norms. Findings highlight the urgent need for gender-transformative MNCH interventions that move beyond surface-level autonomy to address deeper structural inequities. Full article

The Retabit platform is a data-driven tool designed to bridge the gap between building rehabilitation and urban regeneration by integrating energy, economic, and social dimensions into a single framework. Leveraging multiple public data sources, the platform provides actionable insights to local and national authorities, public housing agencies, urban planners, energy service providers, and research institutions, helping to align renovation initiatives with broader urban transformation goals and climate action objectives. The platform consists of two main components: Analyse, for examining building conditions through multidimensional indicators, and Plan, for designing and simulating renovation projects. Retabit contributes to more transparent and informed decision-making, encourages collaboration across sectors, and addresses long-term sustainability by incorporating participatory planning and impact evaluation. Its scalable structure makes it applicable across diverse geographic areas, policy contexts, and domains linked to sustainable urban development. Full article

It is well established that effective management and restoration of freshwater ecosystems is often limited by the availability of reusable data. Although numerous public, private, and nonprofit organizations collect data from freshwater ecosystems, much of what is collected remains inaccessible or unusable by Rights holders and end users (including researchers, practitioners, community members, and decision-makers). In Canada, the federal government plans to improve freshwater data sharing practices through the newly formed Canada Water Agency, which is currently drafting a National Freshwater Data Strategy. Our study aimed to support these efforts by synthesizing insights from the technology sector, where data management and sharing practices are more mature. We interviewed 12 experts from the technology sector, asking them for advice on how to improve data sharing practices in the freshwater science sector. Using a Reflexive Thematic Analysis of participants’ responses to semi-structured interview questions, we identified nine broad recommendations. Recommendations centred on motivating open data sharing, promoting data reuse through data licences, training and skill building, and developing standards and digital solutions that enable data discovery, accessibility, interoperability, and reuse. These recommendations can support the numerous initiatives that are working to improve access to high-quality freshwater data and help address the pressing crisis of global freshwater ecosystem degradation. The cold recycling (CR) technique is gaining traction, with an increasing demand for sustainable pavement construction practices. Cold in-place recycling (CIR) and cold central plant recycling (CCPR) are two strategies under the umbrella of cold recycling. These techniques use reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) to rehabilitate pavement, and CCPR offers the added advantage of utilizing stockpiled RAP. While many agencies have expertise in cold recycling techniques including CCPR, the lack of pavement performance data prevented the largescale implementation of these technologies. Recent studies in high-traffic volume applications demonstrate that CCPR technology can be implemented on the entire road network across all traffic levels. This reignited interest in the widespread implementation of CCPR. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to provide agencies with the most up-to-date information on CCPR to help them make informed decisions. To this end, this paper comprehensively reviews the mix-design for CCPR, the structural design of pavements containing CCPR layers, best construction practices, and the agency experience in using this technology on high-traffic volume roads to provide in-depth information on the steps to follow from project selection to field implementation. The findings specify the suitable laboratory curing conditions to achieve the optimum mix design and specimen preparation procedures to accurately capture the material properties. Additionally, this review synthesizes existing quantitative data from previous studies, providing context for the comparison of findings, where applicable. The empirical and mechanistic–empirical design inputs, along with the limitations of AASHTOWare Pavement ME software for analyzing this non-conventional material, are also presented. Full article

This conceptual paper explores how artificial intelligence—particularly machine learning-based algorithmic systems—is reshaping cultural transmission and symbolic power in the digital age. It argues that algorithms operate as cultural agents, acquiring a form of operative agency that enables them to intervene in the production, circulation, and legitimation of meaning. Drawing on critical pedagogy, sociotechnical theory, and epistemological perspectives, the paper introduces an original framework: Critical Algorithmic Mediation (CAM). CAM conceptualizes algorithmic agency through three interrelated dimensions—structural, operational, and symbolic—providing a lens to analyze how algorithmic systems structure knowledge hierarchies and cultural experience. The article examines the historical role of media in cultural transmission, the epistemic effects of algorithmic infrastructures, and the emergence of algorithmic hegemony as a regime of symbolic power. In response, it advocates for a model of critical digital literacy that promotes algorithmic awareness, epistemic justice, and democratic engagement. By reframing education as a space for symbolic resistance and cultural reappropriation, this work contributes to rethinking digital literacy in societies increasingly governed by algorithmic infrastructures. This paper examines how Marley Dias’ activism on Instagram promotes racial justice, Black feminist thought, and youth mobilization through digital storytelling, representation, and audience engagement. Using a mixed-methods analysis of 744 posts published between 2016 and 2025, the study combined critical thematic coding, temporal mapping, and engagement metrics to analyze the discursive and emotional strategies behind Dias’ activism. Five key themes were identified as central to her activist work: diversity in literature, lack girl empowerment, racial justice, Black representation, and educational advocacy. The findings reveal that Dias strategically tailors her messages to suit Instagram’s unique features, using carousels and videos to enhance visibility, foster intimacy, and provide depth in education. Posts that focused on identity, aesthetics, and empowerment garnered the highest levels of engagement, while posts that concentrated on structural issues received lower, yet still significant, interaction. The paper argues that Dias’ Instagram account serves as a dynamic platform for youth-led Black feminist resistance, where cultural production, civic education, and emotional impact converge. This case underscores the political potential of digital literacies and encourages a reconsideration of how youth-driven digital activism is reshaping contemporary public discourse, agency, and knowledge production in the social media age. This study responds to the urgent need for education that fosters sustainable, self-directed development by introducing a five-phase narrative instruction pre-module grounded within the Life Design Thinking (LDT) framework. Integrating design thinking with narrative theory, LDT promotes learner agency, identity coherence, and adaptive future planning through structured autobiographical reflection. The intervention was conducted in a group setting with 14 adult learners (n = 14) from China. Although participant demographics were not the primary focus, the study emphasized theoretical and methodological development through iterative instructional design. A mixed-methods approach was employed, including rubric-based scoring of 101 written narratives and a thematic analysis of the reflective content. The results demonstrated significant improvements in narrative competence, especially in technical application (+80.91%), reflective depth (+70.0%), with thematic clarity (+58.11%), also showing notable gains related to meaning synthesis and narrative focus. Learners also exhibited enhanced thematic continuity and future-oriented integration. These outcomes highlight the value of narrative pedagogy as a transformative learning approach aligned with SDG 4.7. By cultivating metacognitive awareness and future-readiness, the module contributes to education for sustainable development and provides initial evidence for a potentially scalable and transferable model that supports learners in navigating complexity with meaning and purpose. Implementation Potential of the SILVANUS Project Outcomes for Wildfire Resilience and Sustainable Forest Management in the Slovak Republic

Wildfires are becoming an increasingly severe threat to European forests, driven by climate change, land use changes, and socio-economic factors. Integrated solutions for wildfire prevention, early detection, emergency management, and ecological restoration are urgently needed to enhance forest resilience. The Horizon 2020 SILVANUS project developed a comprehensive multi-sectoral platform combining technological innovation, stakeholder engagement, and sustainable forest management strategies. This report analyses the Slovak Republic’s participation in SILVANUS, applying a seven-criterion fit–gap framework (governance, legal, interoperability, staff capacity, ecological suitability, financial feasibility, and stakeholder acceptance) to evaluate the platform’s alignment with national conditions. Notable contributions include stakeholder-supported functional requirements for wildfire prevention, climate-sensitive forest models for long-term adaptation planning, IoT- and UAV-based early fire detection technologies, and decision support systems (DSS) for emergency response and forest-restoration activities. The Slovak pilot sites, particularly in the Podpoľanie region, served as important testbeds for the validation of these tools under real-world conditions. All SILVANUS modules scored ≥12/14 in the fit–gap assessment; early deployment reduced high-risk fuel polygons by 23%, increased stand-level structural diversity by 12%, and raised the national Sustainable Forest Management index by four points. Integrating SILVANUS outcomes into national forestry practices would enable better wildfire risk assessment, improved resilience planning, and more effective public engagement in wildfire management. Opportunities for adoption include capacity-building initiatives, technological deployments in fire-prone areas, and the incorporation of DSS outputs into strategic forest planning. Potential challenges, such as technological investment costs, inter-agency coordination, and public acceptance, are also discussed. Overall, the Slovak Republic’s engagement with SILVANUS demonstrates the value of participatory, technology-driven approaches to sustainable wildfire management and offers a replicable model for other European regions facing similar challenges. The presence of hope significantly influences how youth interpret possibilities and commit to future-oriented action. This qualitative study investigates how fifteen Black emerging adults, ages eighteen to twenty-five, living in a major United States urban city on the East Coast, describe their aspirations, goal-setting strategies, and responses to personal and structural challenges. Participants were categorized as connected or disconnected based on their engagement in school, work, or training programs. Using Reflexive Thematic Analysis of interviews, the research identified key differences in agency, emotional orientation, and access to guidance between the two groups. Connected participants often described clear, structured goals supported by networks of mentorship and opportunity. Disconnected participants expressed meaningful hope, yet described fewer supports and greater uncertainty in achieving their goals. These findings highlight how consistent exposure to guidance and structured environments strengthens future orientation and internal motivation. These results deepen our understanding of how young people experience hope across diverse contexts and show that mentorship, intentional goal setting, and greater access to opportunity play a vital role in sustaining hopeful thinking during the transition to adulthood. Urban environmental issues are fundamental to ecological civilization development, with key stakeholders such as governments, enterprises, social organizations, and community residents playing crucial roles in the governance process. From a network governance perspective, this study innovatively applied social network analysis (SNA) to policy co-occurrence networks, analyzing over 2300 policy documents related to China’s urban environmental governance from 2017 to 2023 to investigate evolutionary trends. The key findings indicate the following. (1) The comparative analysis across two periods reveals that China’s urban environmental governance network structure has stabilized, with both network density and centralization indices showing an upward trend. (2) The degree of centrality and betweenness centrality shows that government agencies remain the core entities within the network, while the role and influence of business enterprises have steadily increased. (3) The participation of social organizations in governance continues to increase, but community public participation in governance is insufficient. Therefore, China’s ecological environment governance network has formed a network structure with the government as the leader, enterprises as the key role, and social organizations providing effective support. Residual dry matter (RDM) is a term used in rangeland management to describe the non-photosynthetic plant material left on the soil surface at the end of the growing season. RDM measurements are used by agencies and conservation entities for managing grazing and fire fuels. Measuring the RDM using traditional methods is labor-intensive, costly, and subjective, making consistent sampling challenging. Previous studies have assessed the use of multispectral remote sensing to estimate the RDM, but with limited success across space and time. The existing approaches may be improved through the use of spectroscopic (hyperspectral) sensors, capable of capturing the cellulose and lignin present in dry grass, as well as Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-mounted Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensors, capable of capturing centimeter-scale 3D vegetation structures. Here, we evaluate the relationships between the RDM and spectral and LiDAR data across the Jack and Laura Dangermond Preserve (Santa Barbara County, CA, USA), which uses grazing and prescribed fire for rangeland management. The spectral indices did not correlate with the RDM (R2 < 0.1), likely due to complete areal coverage with dense grass. The LiDAR canopy height models performed better for all the samples (R2 = 0.37), with much stronger performance (R2 = 0.81) when using a stratified model to predict the RDM in plots with predominantly standing (as opposed to laying) vegetation. This study demonstrates the potential of UAV LiDAR for direct RDM quantification where vegetation is standing upright, which could help improve RDM mapping and management for rangelands in California and beyond. Global data reveal ongoing inequalities faced by minorities, often reinforced by media portrayals that depict them as threats, victims, or passive individuals without agency. While media framing has been extensively studied, especially in terms of media content and representation, few studies have examined how journalists perceive and navigate the coverage of minorities. This study addresses that gap by examining how Greek journalists perceive mainstream media coverage of refugees and migrants, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people with mental health challenges, with particular attention to their sourcing practices and sense of ethical responsibility. Fourteen journalists participated in semi-structured interviews, and thematic analysis was applied to identify key patterns. Journalists described dominant media narratives as fragmented, stereotypical, and dehumanizing, noting the frequent use of linguistic inaccuracies, misinformation, and the absence of personal stories. At the same time, they reported opportunities within their own sourcing practices to promote more inclusive and accurate coverage. Ethical concerns were expressed on three levels—union; corporate; and personal—with calls for clearer editorial guidelines and dedicated training. Many participants emphasized the role of personal ethics as a guiding compass in navigating complex newsroom pressures. Full article
