This study investigates mechanisms that influence how users perceive a technology’s usefulness after adoption as they continue to use the technology. The Expectation Confirmation Model (ECM) has been widely used to examine the key drivers of IT continuance, emphasizing perceived usefulness as a central factor. Although researchers have explored factors, such as ease of use, trust, and site quality, affecting post-adoption perceived usefulness, the mechanisms shaping post-adoption perceived usefulness remain underexplored. This study proposes that post-adoption perceived usefulness is shaped through the actualization of the technology’s affordances. Using a survey focused on fitness app usage (e.g., Fitbit), we examined various affordances users actualize and whether actualization of an affordance shapes their perception of usefulness. Results show that some affordances are actualized widely by most users (e.g., exercise status updating) while others are actualized by fewer users (e.g., reminders to exercise or guiding users how to exercise). Moreover, when an affordance is widely actualized, it significantly influences users’ perceptions of usefulness within the ECM framework. Given that perceived usefulness is a key factor in predicting IT continuance, our findings contribute to the literature by highlighting the influence of actualized affordances on perceptions of usefulness and hence IT continuance. The introduction of mobile banking is essential in today’s financial sector, where technological innovation plays a critical role. To remain competitive in the current market, businesses must analyze client attitudes and perspectives, as these influence long-term demand and overall profitability. While previous studies have explored general adoption behaviors, limited research has examined how individual factors such as social influence, lifestyle compatibility, financial technology self-efficacy, and perceived usage cost affect mobile banking adoption among specific generational cohorts. This study addresses that gap by offering insights into these variables, contributing to the growing literature on mobile banking adoption, and presenting actionable recommendations for financial institutions targeting younger market segments. Using a structured questionnaire survey, data were collected from both users and non-users of mobile banking among the Gen Z population in the United States. The regression model significantly predicts mobile banking adoption, with an intercept of 0.548 (p < 0.001). Among the independent variables, perceived cost of usage has the strongest positive effect on adoption (B=0.857, β=0.722, p < 0.001), suggesting that adoption increases when mobile banking is perceived as more affordable. Social influence also has a significant positive impact (B=0.642, β=0.643, p < 0.001), indicating that peer influence is a central driver of adoption decisions. However, self-efficacy shows a significant negative relationship (B=0.343, β=0.339, p < 0.001), and lifestyle compatibility was found to be statistically insignificant (p=0.615). These findings suggest that reducing perceived costs, through lower fees, data bundling, or clearer communication about affordability, can directly enhance adoption among Gen Z consumers. Furthermore, leveraging peer influence via referral rewards, Partnerships with influencers, and in-app social features can increase user adoption. Since digital self-efficacy presents a barrier for some, banks should prioritize simplifying user interfaces and offering guided assistance, such as tutorials or chat-based support. Future research may employ longitudinal designs or analyze real-life transaction data for a more objective understanding of behavior. Additional variables like trust, perceived risk, and regulatory policies, not included in this study, should be integrated into future models to offer a more comprehensive analysis. Full article

Balancing Profitability and Sustainability in Electric Vehicles Insurance: Underwriting Strategies for Affordable and Premium Models

This study aims to develop an optimal underwriting strategy for affordable (H1 and M1) and premium (L1 and M2) electric vehicles (EVs), balancing financial risk and sustainability commitments. The research is motivated by regulatory pressures, risk management needs, and sustainability goals, necessitating an adaptation of traditional underwriting models. The study employs a modified Delphi method with industry experts to identify key risk factors, including accident risk, repair costs, battery safety, driver behavior, and PCAF carbon impact. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to examine premium adjustments under different risk scenarios, categorizing EVs into four risk segments: Low-Risk, Low-Carbon (L1); Medium-Risk, Low-Carbon (M1); Medium-Risk, High-Carbon (M2); and High-Risk, High-Carbon (H1). Findings indicate that premium EVs (L1 and M2) exhibit lower volatility in underwriting costs, benefiting from advanced safety features, lower accident rates, and reduced carbon attribution penalties. Conversely, budget EVs (H1 and M1) experience higher premium fluctuations due to greater accident risks, costly repairs, and higher carbon costs under PCAF implementation. The worst-case scenario showed a 14.5% premium increase, while the best-case scenario led to a 10.5% premium reduction. The study recommends prioritizing premium EVs for insurance coverage due to their lower underwriting risks and carbon efficiency. For budget EVs, insurers should implement selective underwriting based on safety features, driver risk profiling, and energy efficiency. Additionally, incentive-based pricing such as telematics discounts, green repair incentives, and low-carbon charging rewards can mitigate financial risks and align with net-zero insurance commitments. This research provides a structured framework for insurers to optimize EV underwriting while ensuring long-term profitability and regulatory compliance. Full article

Despite growing recognition of the role that social determinants of health (SDOHs) and health-related social needs (HRSNs) play in chronic disease, limited research has examined their associations with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in population-based studies. This cross-sectional study analyzed 2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data from 37 U.S. states and territories to determine how financial hardship, food insecurity, employment loss, healthcare access barriers, and psychosocial stressors influence the prevalence of COPD. Weighted logistic regression models were used to assess the associations between COPD and specific SDOHs and HRSNs. Several individual SDOH and HRSN factors were significantly associated with COPD prevalence, with financial strain emerging as a particularly strong predictor. In models examining specific SDOH factors, economic hardships like inability to afford medical care were strongly linked to higher COPD odds. Psychosocial HRSN risks, such as experiencing mental stress, also showed moderate associations with increased COPD prevalence. These findings suggest that addressing both structural and individual-level social risks may be critical for reducing the prevalence of COPD in populations experiencing financial challenges. Housing affordability is a major determinant of quality of life. Despite the relatively high GDP per capita in Hong Kong (HK) (USD 460,000), about one-third of the population lives in public rental housing (PRH) because they cannot afford private housing. Existing research estimating the benefits of PRH or direct housing supports faces methodological limitations. Addressing this research gap, our study adopts an “in-kind subsidy” approach to estimate the monetary value of PRH, quantifying how much less PRH households might save monthly if they resided in private rental units, after controlling for confounding factors. This paper examines the association of housing types and household savings by applying ordinary least squares (OLS) regression to compare savings among PRH tenants, non-PRH tenants, and mortgage-free homeowners, based on seven rounds of the Household Expenditure Survey data (1989/1990 to 2019/2020). PRH tenants saved significantly more than private housing tenants. In terms of household savings, the value of HK PRH has steadily increased from HKD 4483 in 1999/2000, to HKD 9187 in 2019/2020. For every dollar increase in income, a household would have the propensity to save 0.7 dollars in 2019/2020. Given limited public resources, our findings offer robust evidence regarding the value of public housing. The results underscore the importance of the equitable allocation and effective management of current PRH stock to enhance the upward mobility of low- to middle-income households amid limited housing resources in HK. Accurate and efficient estimation of microalgae cell concentration is critical for applications in hydrochemical monitoring, biofuel production, pharmaceuticals, and ecological studies. Traditional methods, such as manual counting with a hemocytometer, are time-consuming and prone to human error, while automated systems are often costly and require extensive training data. This paper presents a low-cost, automated approach for estimating cell concentration in Chlorella vulgaris suspensions using classical computer vision techniques. The proposed method eliminates the need for deep learning by leveraging the Hough circle transform to detect and count cells in microscope images, combined with a conversion factor to translate pixel measurements into metric units for direct concentration calculation (cells/mL). Validation against manual hemocytometer counts demonstrated strong agreement, with a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.96 and a mean percentage difference of 17.96%. The system achieves rapid processing (under 30 s per image) and offers interpretability, allowing specialists to verify results visually. Key advantages include affordability, minimal hardware requirements, and adaptability to other microbiological applications. Limitations, such as sensitivity to cell clumping and impurities, are discussed. This work provides a practical, accessible solution for laboratories lacking expensive automated equipment, bridging the gap between manual methods and high-end technologies. Full article

Mycelium-based composites (MBCs) are an emerging category of cost-effective and environmentally sustainable materials that are attracting significant research and commercial interest across various industries, including construction, manufacturing, agriculture, and biomedicine. These materials harness the natural growth of fungi as a low-energy bio-fabrication method, converting abundant agricultural by-products and waste into sustainable alternatives to energy-intensive synthetic construction materials. Their affordability and eco-friendly characteristics make them attractive for both research and commercialisation. Currently, mycelium-based foams and sandwich composites are being actively developed for applications in construction. These materials offer exceptional thermal insulation, excellent acoustic absorption, and superior fire safety compared to conventional building materials like synthetic foams and engineered wood. As a result, MBCs show great potential for applications in thermal and acoustic insulation. However, their foam-like mechanical properties, high water absorption, and limited documentation of material properties restrict their use to non- or semi-structural roles, such as insulation, panelling, and furniture. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the fabrication process and the factors affecting the production and performance properties of MBCs. It addresses key elements such as fungal species selection, substrate choice, optimal growth conditions, dehydration methods, post-processing techniques, mechanical and physical properties, termite resistance, cost comparison, and life cycle assessment. Tourist satisfaction of nighttime urban lakes as scenic areas, such as the Daming Lake, is influenced by multiple factors, which are crucial for tourists’ experiences and the sustainable development of these areas. This paper explores the factors impacting nighttime visitor satisfaction at the Daming Lake Scenic Area. Basing our studies on analysis of the literature and questionnaire surveys, the study constructs a visitor satisfaction evaluation index system based on the Expectancy-Disconfirmation Theory. Utilizing the revised importance-performance analysis method, the study identifies several significant influencing factors including the distinctive features of nighttime shopping products, the rich variety of nighttime tourscape and entertainment products, the aesthetically pleasing design of nighttime lighting products, the affordable price of nighttime dining products, and the diverse methods, reasonable pricing, and multimodal transit options of nighttime transportation. Furthermore, it finds the main factors that reduce tourists’ satisfaction in nighttime urban lakes include: premium pricing of nighttime shopping and dining products, transport infrastructure deficiencies, the cultural connotation of tourism products, and the safety of nighttime tourscape and entertainment products. This research provides insights to enhance satisfaction in urban lake scenic areas and expands the application of the tourist satisfaction theory. Full article

As many companies adopted hybrid work arrangements during and after the COVID-19 outbreak, interest in Metaverse applications for virtual offices grew considerably. Along with this growing interest, the risk of data breaches has also increased, as virtual offices often handle confidential documents for businesses. For this reason, existing studies have explored Metaverse user authentication methods; however, their methods suffer from several limitations, such as the need for additional sensors and one-time authentication. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel behavioral authentication framework for secure Metaverse workspaces. The proposed framework adopts keyboard typing behavior that is common in the office and does not cause fatigue to users as an authentication factor to afford active and continuous user authentication. Based on our evaluation, the user identification accuracy achieved an average of approximately 95% among 11 of 15 participants, with the highest-performing user reaching an accuracy of 99.77%. In addition, the proposed framework achieved an average false acceptance rate of 0.41% and a false rejection rate of 4.02%. It was also evaluated with existing studies using requirements for user authentication in the Metaverse to demonstrate its strengths. Therefore, this framework can fully ensure a secure Metaverse office by preventing unauthenticated users. Full article

Electric vehicles (EVs) have been the most dependable and feasible choice for decarbonizing road transport over the last decade. To ensure the advancement of EVs and establish them as a sustainable alternative to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, the EV sector and technological growth have largely relied on government subsidies. A significant challenge for EVs is their faster depreciation compared to ICE vehicles, primarily owing to swift technological advancements that propel the market while simultaneously rendering older EV models outdated too soon. Another factor that leads to the quicker depreciation of EVs is subsidies. The anticipated cessation of subsidies is expected to provide the required leverage to mitigate the rapid value decline in EVs, given the larger price disparity between new and used EVs. Batteries, which enable EVs to be a viable option, significantly contribute to the depreciation of EVs. In addition to the potential decline in EV battery performance, advancements in technology and reduced prices provide newer models with improved range at a more affordable cost. The used EV market accurately represents the rapid devaluation of EVs; consequently, the two topics are tightly related. Though it might not be immediately apparent, it seems evident that the pace of depreciation of EVs significantly contributes to the small size of the second-hand EV market. Depreciation is a key factor influencing the used EV market. This manuscript outlines the key aspects of depreciation and sustainability in the EV transition, especially those linked to rapid technological advancements, such as batteries, in addition to subsidies and the used EV market. The objective of this manuscript is to expose and analyze the relation between the drivers of the second-hand EV market, such as the cost of ownership, technology, and subsidies, and, on the other hand, present the interplay perspectives and challenges. Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have already been reported as a promising alternative to traditional energy sources due to their excellent power conversion efficiency, affordability, and versatility, which is particularly relevant considering the growing worldwide demand for energy and increasing scarcity of natural resources. However, operational concerns under environmental stresses hinder its economic feasibility. Through the addition of cesium (Cs), this study investigates how to optimize perovskite solar cells (PSCs) based on methylammonium lead-iodide (MAPbI3) by creating mixed-cation compositions of MA1−xCsxPbI3 (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1) for devices A to E, respectively. The impact of cesium content on the following factors, such as open-circuit voltage (Voc), short-circuit current density (Jsc), fill factor (FF), and power conversion efficiency (PCE), was investigated using simulation software, with ITO/TiO2/MA1−xCsxPbI3/Spiro-OMeTAD/Au as a device architecture. Due to diminished defect density, the device with x = 0.5 (MA0.5Cs0.5PbI3) attains a maximum power conversion efficiency of 18.53%, with a Voc of 0.9238 V, Jsc of 24.22 mA/cm2, and a fill factor of 82.81%. The optimal doping density of TiO2 is approximately 1020 cm−3, while the optimal thicknesses of the electron transport layer (TiO2, 10–30 nm), the hole-transport layer (Spiro-OMeTAD, about 10–20 nm), and the perovskite absorber (750 nm) were identified to maximize efficiency. The inclusion of a small amount of Cs may improve photovoltaic responses; however, at elevated concentrations (x > 0.5), power conversion efficiency (PCE) diminished due to the presence of trap states. The results show that mixed-cation perovskite solar cells can be a great commercially viable option because they strike a good balance between efficiency and performance. Full article

Due to soil nutrient depletion and rising food demand from an increasing global population, it is essential to find sustainable ways to boost crop yields, improve soil health, and address the environmental issues induced by agriculture. The most appropriate approach is to consider sustainable amendments, such as biochar and its derivatives, which are vital constituents of soil health due to their affordability, low reactivity, large surface area, and reduced carbon footprint. In this context, biochar and its derivatives in farming systems focus on improving soil structure, nutrient holding capacity, microbial activities, and the perpetuation of soil fertility. Despite its benefits, biochar, if it is used in high concentration, can sometimes become highly toxic, causing soil erosion due to reducing surface area, increasing pH levels, and altering soil properties. This review highlights the production methods and sources of feedstocks, emphasizing their important contribution to the soil’s physicochemical and biological properties. Furthermore, it critically evaluates the environmental applications and their impacts, providing data built upon the literature on contaminant removal from soil, economic factors, heavy metal immobilization, carbon sequestration, and climate resilience. This review emphasizes the main challenges and future prospects for biochar use in comparison to modified biochar (MB) to propose the best practices for sustainable farming systems. Full article

The ageing population and rising housing costs in Switzerland are increasing the number of older adults facing financial housing concerns. Older women have particularly limited housing choices because they, on average, earn less, live longer, and are more likely to live alone. This study explores potential levers to alleviate housing-related financial fears among baby boomer women (aged 55–75) living alone in Switzerland, a subject with limited academic coverage. Using regression and random forest models on unique 2023 survey data (N=371), we examine the influence of socio-demographic, financial, well-being, and housing factors on fears related to affordability, price increases, and lack of housing supply. Key findings show that ownership status, perceived financial situation, and concerns about maintaining one’s lifestyle significantly drive these fears. The fear of unsuitable housing strongly influences perceived lack of supply. These results highlight the importance of retirement planning and support the consideration of measures such as reverse mortgages, co-housing, subsidies, and rent-controlled units. Full article

Mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining walls have become a favored substitute for traditional poured concrete walls due to their affordability, minimal site preparation needs, and practical construction advantages. However, using backfill material with too many small particles and poor drainage qualities may cause the wall to rotate and shift a lot or collapse completely, especially when water pressure is present. This study examines an MSE wall considering different variables, such as water pressure, the type of soil materials in the backfill materials, external load, and the type of analysis. To this aim, both PLAXIS V20 and SLOPE/W (GeoStudio 2019 Suite) software were employed, and after the verification, further investigations were carried out. These numerical analyses aligned with the real-world failure reported by previous researchers, departments, and companies. The findings suggest that the elevated presence of fine particles likely contributed to the wall’s excessive shift. Also, hydrostatic pressure behind a wall, especially in the rainy season, plays a crucial role in the factor of safety reduction by 45% and wall failure, which leads us to consider it an appropriate factor of safety for the MSE wall. This study examines the demographic and macroeconomic factors influencing housing prices in London from Q3 2014 to Q4 2022, focusing on the pre- and post-Brexit referendum periods. Using multiple regression analysis, the research evaluates the impact of interest rates, inflation, construction costs, population changes, and net migration on the housing price index (HPI) across various market segments. The findings suggest that interest rate base rates, consumer price inflation, and construction output price indices were significant predictors of housing price fluctuations. Notably, cash purchases exhibited the strongest explanatory power due to a reduced sensitivity to market changes. Additionally, London’s population was a key determinant, particularly affecting first-time buyers and mortgage-backed purchases. These results contribute to a deeper understanding of the London housing market and offer insights into policy measures addressing housing affordability and investment dynamics. Full article
