Background/Introduction: Psychological inflexibility, which includes experiential avoidance, is a transdiagnostic process associated with multiple mental health issues in adolescence. Physical fitness (PF) has shown benefits for mental well-being, yet its specific relationship with psychological inflexibility remains understudied, particularly among youth. Objectives: To examine the association between components of PF and psychological inflexibility, measured by the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II (AAQ-II), in a representative sample of Spanish adolescents. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data from 631 adolescents (aged 12–17) participating in the Eating Healthy and Daily Life Activities (EHDLA) study. PF was assessed by the Assessing the Levels of PHysical Activity and Fitness (ALPHA-Fit) Test Battery (cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength, agility, and flexibility). Psychological inflexibility was measured using the AAQ-II. Generalized linear models (GLMs) were used to evaluate associations, adjusting for age, sex, body mass index, socioeconomic status, physical activity, sedentary behavior, sleep duration, and energy intake. Results: Unadjusted analyses showed weak but significant associations between psychological inflexibility and performance in the 20 m shuttle run test (p = 0.002), the 4 × 10 shuttle run test (p = 0.005), and the sit-and-reach test (p < 0.001). However, after adjusting for covariates, none of the PF components maintained a statistically significant association with the AAQ-II scores. Conclusions: In this adolescent sample, PF components were not independently associated with psychological inflexibility after adjustment for key confounders. These findings suggest that, while PF may contribute to general well-being, it is not a primary determinant of psychological inflexibility. Further longitudinal and intervention studies are needed to clarify the mechanisms linking physical and psychological health in youth. Full article

Background: Emotional abuse is both prevalent and underrecognized particularly in culturally complex settings like India. Adolescents, being in a critical developmental phase, are especially vulnerable to the long-lasting psychological effects of emotional abuse. This qualitative literature review aims to synthesize findings from primary studies that explore the lived experiences of emotional abuse among Indian adolescents and identify emerging patterns across sociocultural contexts. Method: Electronic databases, including DOAJ, Google Scholar, ProQuest, JSTOR, Pubmed, PsycNet, and SCOPUS, were searched for peer-reviewed articles published in English up to March 2025. Inclusion criteria comprised qualitative or mixed-methods research focusing on emotional abuse among adolescents aged 12–20 in Indian contexts. The Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) was used for quality assessment. Results: Five major thematic domains were identified across the included studies: (1) Family as a primary site of emotional abuse; (2) Gendered experiences of abuse; (3) Cultural normalization and silence; (4) Psychological and emotional consequences; and (5) Coping and resilience among adolescents. These themes reflect shared experiences of emotional abuse shaped by cultural, familial, and gender-based expectations. Conclusions: This review highlights the urgent need for increased awareness and culturally sensitive interventions addressing emotional abuse in Indian adolescents. The findings suggest that parents, educators, and policymakers must recognize emotionally harmful behaviors and implement prevention-oriented strategies, particularly through non-violent communication and adolescent mental health support frameworks. Background: Chronic stress in childhood and adolescence leads to excessive cortisol secretion, adipokines production and obesity with all the negative mental and physical effects on the health of individuals and adulthood. Objectives: The aim of the present non-randomized controlled trial was to investigate the effect of a stress management protocol with diaphragmatic breathing (DB) and physiotherapy exercise on stress, body composition, cardiorespiratory and metabolic markers of children and adolescents with morbid obesity. Methods: The study included 31 children and adolescents (5–18 years old) with morbid obesity (22 in the intervention arm and 9 controls). All participants completed anxiety questionnaires and a self-perception scale. Forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), blood pressure (BP) and SpO2 were measured. Fasting glucose, uric acid, triglycerides, HbA1c, (AST/SGOT), (ALT/SGPT), HDL, LDL, insulin, ACTH, cortisol, HOMA-IR, 17-OH, S-DHEA, SHBG were assessed, and anthropometric measurements were also performed. Results: In the intervention group, 4 months after the treatment, an improvement was noted in the BMI, BMI z-score, waist-to-height ratio, FEV1, SpO2, pulse and systolic BP. HDL increased, ALT/SGPT and insulin resistance improved. Positive changes were observed in temporary and permanent stress and self-esteem of children in the intervention group, including anxiety, self-perception, physical appearance, etc. Conclusions: A combined exercise and DB protocol has a positive effect on stress, by improving body composition, reducing insulin resistance, and ameliorating physical and mental health and quality of life of pediatric patients with morbid obesity. This study assessed the effects of a family function (FF) program on excessive digital behaviors—smartphone overuse (SO) and phubbing—and psychological needs—anxiety, loneliness, and fear of missing out (FoMO)—among 28 Thai female Muslim adolescents randomly assigned to the experimental (Mage = 15.7) and control (Mage = 15.2) groups. The experimental group received two 1.5 h morning sessions of the FF program weekly over four weeks (eight sessions in total). Baseline assessments confirmed group homogeneity. Using repeated-measures ANOVA with Bonferroni correction (p < 0.008), the results indicated a significant improvement in family function for the intervention group (F (1,26) = 11.91, p = 0.002, η2p = 0.31), with a strong time-by-group interaction (F (1,26) = 19.51, p < 0.001, η2p = 0.43). While the program did not significantly reduce SO overall, a notable interaction effect suggested group differences (F (1,26) = 10.31, p = 0.004, η2p = 0.28). Phubbing remained unaffected. For psychological outcomes, interaction effects were found for the FoMO (F = 10.00, p = 0.004) and loneliness (F = 8.67, p = 0.007), though no main effects emerged. Anxiety levels did not significantly change after correction. These findings suggest that the program effectively enhances family functioning and partially alleviates psychosocial risks, but further refinements are needed to address digital overuse and anxiety more effectively. Background/Objectives: The aim was to identify patterns of autonomic and neuroendocrine reactivity to an immersive virtual reality (VR) social-emotional stressor and explore their associations with perceived stress and eating behavior. Methods: This one-group pretest–posttest study included 30 children and adolescents with obesity (15 boys and 15 girls), aged 8 to 17 years. The VR protocol consisted of two consecutive phases: a 5 min relaxation phase using the Forest application and a 5 min stimulation phase using a cognitively engaging VR game designed to elicit social-emotional stress. Physiological responses were measured using heart rate variability (HRV) indices and salivary stress biomarkers, including cortisol and alpha amylase. Subjective stress and eating responses were assessed via visual analogue scales (VAS) administered immediately post-exposure. The Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ-R21C) was used to evaluate cognitive restraint (CR), uncontrolled eating (UE), and emotional eating (EE). Results: The cortisol reactivity was blunted and may reflect both the attenuated HPA axis responsiveness characteristic of pediatric obesity and the moderate psychological challenge of the VR stressor used in this study. Two distinct autonomic response patterns were identified via exploratory factor analysis: (1) parasympathetic reactivity, associated with increased RMSSD and SDNN and decreased LF/HF, and (2) sympathetic activation, associated with increased heart rate and alpha-amylase levels and reduced RR intervals. Parasympathetic reactivity was correlated with lower perceived stress and anxiety, but also paradoxically with higher uncontrolled eating (UE). In contrast, sympathetic activation was associated with greater cognitive restraint (CR) and higher anxiety ratings. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that immersive VR game exposure elicits measurable autonomic and subjective stress responses in children and adolescents with obesity, and that individual differences in physiological reactivity are relevantly associated with eating behavior traits. The findings suggest that parasympathetic and sympathetic profiles may represent distinct behavioral patterns with implications for targeted intervention. Full article

Background/Objectives: Internalizing disorders are highly prevalent during adolescence. Previous research has shown that psychological inflexibility (PI) in both adolescents and their parents contributes to internalizing problems. However, how parental and adolescent PI relate to one another in explaining these difficulties remains unclear. The present exploratory study examined whether adolescent PI mediates the relationship between maternal PI and internalizing problems in adolescents. Methods: The study sample included 81 mother–adolescent dyads (80% female adolescents). Mothers completed a general self-report measure of PI, while adolescents completed self-report measures assessing both PI and internalizing problems. Results: The results showed that adolescent PI partially mediated the relationship between maternal PI and internalizing difficulties in female adolescents, whereas the mediation model was not significant for male adolescents. Conclusions: Findings suggest that mothers with high levels of psychological inflexibility may foster similar patterns in their children, particularly in daughters, thereby increasing adolescents’ vulnerability to increased psychological distress. Background/Objectives: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are chronic autoimmune conditions that impact the physical and psychological well-being of pediatric patients. While previous studies have shown a high prevalence of mental health challenges among youth with chronic conditions, the prevalence of mental health issues in Canadian pediatric patients with JIA and IBD remains unclear. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of documented mental health disorders and related medication use of youth with JIA or IBD at a tertiary care centre. Methods: We conducted a retrospective chart review of youths aged 12–17 diagnosed with JIA or IBD at McMaster Children’s Hospital (MCH) to understand the prevalence of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), separation anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder (SAD), obsessive–compulsive disorders (OCD), eating disorders, major depressive disorder (MDD), adolescent adjustment disorder, suicide attempt/suicide ideation, self-harm behaviour, substance use disorder, and attention deficit disorders (ADD). Results: We reviewed 429 patient charts, including 303 patients with IBD and 126 with JIA. Our findings identified 90 IBD patients and 20 JIA patients who had one or more documented mental health conditions. Proportionately, there was a higher prevalence of mental health conditions among IBD patients (30%) compared to JIA patients (16%). The most frequently observed conditions in both IBD and JIA patients were GAD (63%, 50%), ADD (33%, 35%), and MDD (29%, 15%). Conclusions: These findings highlight the critical need for early mental health screening and integrated care approaches that address both medical and psychosocial needs in adolescents with chronic illnesses. Future research should incorporate prospective study designs, include diverse geographic and demographic populations, and explore targeted interventions to improve mental and physical health outcomes in this vulnerable group. Background/Objectives: Social worry may appear in preadolescence, causing it to persist in the future, such that adolescents become more avoidant of situations in which they are evaluated by others. Many previous studies have shown that approximately 4% of preadolescent children suffer from high levels of social worry, which may lead to other problems in the future. It is important to take necessary precautions to explore this worry and take the necessary measures to address it. This study aimed to do so by extracting the psychometric properties of the Social Worries Questionnaire (SWQ) for preadolescence in Arab countries. Methods: The sample consisted of 269 children aged 8–12 years. The SWQ, Spence Child Anxiety Scale (SCAS), Child Abuse Self-Reporting Scale (CASRS-12), and Arabic version of the Children’s Depression Inventory (AVCDI) were administered via various social media. Results: Confirmatory factor analysis was used, and the one-factor model showed that the scale consists of 14 items. The results also indicated evidence of discriminant validity, and that the internal consistency was acceptable. For reliability, the test–retest results showed that the value was appropriate. Conclusions: This scale could be valuable in detecting worry in preadolescent children and providing them with therapeutic and psychological services. Full article

Background/Objectives: Chronic pain and eating disorders are two prevalent and disabling pediatric health concerns, with serious, life-threatening consequences. These conditions can co-occur, yet little is known about best practices addressing comorbid pain and eating disorders. Delayed intervention for eating disorders may have grave implications, as eating disorders have one of the highest mortality rates among psychological disorders. Moreover, chronic pain not only persists but worsens into adulthood when left untreated. This study aimed to understand pediatric clinicians’ experiences with adolescents with chronic pain and eating disorders. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with hospital-based physicians (N = 10; 70% female; M years of experience = 15.3) and psychologists (N = 10; 80% female; M years of experience = 10.2) specializing in anesthesiology/pain, adolescent medicine/eating disorders, and gastroenterology across the United States. Audio transcripts were coded, and thematic analysis was used to identify key themes. Results: Clinicians described frequently encountering adolescents with chronic pain and eating disorders. Clinicians described low confidence in diagnosing comorbid eating disorders and chronic pain, which they attributed to lack of screening tools and limited training. Clinicians collaborated with and consulted clinicians who encountered adolescents with chronic pain and/or eating disorders. Conclusions: Results reflect clinicians’ desire for additional resources, training, and collaboration to address the needs of this population. Targets for future research efforts in comorbid pain and eating disorders were highlighted. Specifically, results support the development of screening tools, program development to improve training in complex medical and psychiatric presentations, and methods to facilitate more collaboration and consultation across health care settings, disciplines, and specialties. Background and Clinical Significance: Juvenile ossifying fibroma (JOF) is a rare, benign, but locally aggressive fibro-osseous neoplasm that primarily affects the craniofacial skeleton of children and adolescents. Early surgical intervention is often required due to the lesion’s rapid growth and potential for significant facial deformity. Long-term functional and esthetic rehabilitation following maxillary resection in early childhood remains a clinical challenge. Case Presentation: This case reports a unique long-term follow-up of a 22-year-old female patient who underwent partial maxillary resection at the age of five due to JOF. Initial reconstructive efforts failed, necessitating a removable prosthesis to restore function and appearance. The patient experienced persistent self-consciousness and social withdrawal during adolescence, attributed to altered facial esthetics and repeated surgical disappointment. Nevertheless, prosthetic rehabilitation significantly improved mastication, phonetics, facial symmetry, and psychological well-being. Conclusions: The enduring psychosocial and functional impact of early maxillary resection for JOF and the pivotal role of prosthodontic management in long term rehabilitation are highlighted. A multidisciplinary approach that includes psychological support is suggested. This case report is among the few reports documenting long-term prosthetic outcomes for pediatric JOF patients extending into adulthood. Full article

Background/Objectives: The increasing population of childhood cancer survivors presents new challenges for healthcare systems worldwide. While advances in oncological treatments have dramatically improved survival rates, survivors face a broad spectrum of late effects that extend beyond the biological to encompass profound psychological and social dimensions. Methods: This quasi-systematic review synthesizes data from recent studies on adolescent survivors, revealing significant disruptions in cognitive function, mental health, social integration, education, romantic relationships, and vocational outcomes. Results: This review highlights the inadequacy of a solely biomedical model and advocates for a biopsychosocial approach to long-term follow-up care. An emphasis is placed on the necessity of personalized, interdisciplinary, and developmentally informed interventions, especially in countries like Poland, where structured survivorship care models remain underdeveloped. Conclusions: The findings underscore the importance of integrating medical, psychological, and social services to ensure adolescent cancer survivors achieve not only physical recovery but also meaningful life participation and emotional well-being. Positive Mental Health in Adolescents: Implications of Cognitive–Emotional Processes and Social Support

Background: Adolescence is a key period of development characterized by emotional, cognitive, and social changes that impact positive mental health (PMH). While social support is a well-established protective factor, cognitive and emotional processes, such as cognitive fusion and regulation of distress, also play a critical role. Objective: This study aimed to examine the relationship among various cognitive (i.e., cognitive fusion), emotional (i.e., regulation of distress), and social determinants (i.e., social support) in adolescents’ PMH, as their interplay could reflect theoretical models highlighting how these factors jointly shape adolescents’ mental health. Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 505 adolescents (aged 13–15 years) in Spain. Participants completed online questionnaires assessing sociodemographic variables, cognitive fusion, regulation of distress, PMH, and social support from friends. Descriptive statistics, correlation analyses, and mediation and moderated mediation models were conducted, adjusting for relevant covariates. Results: Cognitive fusion was negatively correlated with regulation of distress, PMH, and social support, whereas regulation of distress showed a positive association with both PMH and social support. Mediation analysis indicated that regulation of distress significantly mediated the relationship between cognitive fusion and PMH. Furthermore, peer support moderated this mediated relationship: higher levels of support mitigated the negative impact of regulation of distress on PMH. Sociodemographic analyses revealed that girls, non-national students, and those receiving educational support showed less favorable outcomes. Conclusions: Cognitive, emotional, and social variables jointly influence adolescents’ PMH. Emotional regulation serves as a mediator of cognitive fusion and PMH, while social support from peers mediates the impact of psychological distress. Targeted interventions should prioritize emotional regulation strategies and enhancing peer support, especially among more vulnerable groups. Full article

The extensive use of digital media among adolescents has raised concerns about its impact on emotional development and mental health. Understanding the psychological factors behind problematic digital media use is essential for effective prevention. This study examined whether the relationships between emotion regulation (negative and positive), compulsive use, cognitive preoccupation, and negative outcomes linked to digital media are consistent across sex and academic year. We used a cross-sectional design with 2357 adolescents (12–16 years old) from Compulsory Secondary Education. Participants completed validated self-report questionnaires assessing problematic digital media use, and associated consequences in four domains: internet, video games, social networking, and messaging. Four structural equation models (SEMs), each focused on a media type, tested whether these relationships remained stable across sex and academic year. All models showed good fit, and differences between groups were minimal, supporting valid comparisons. Results confirm that emotion regulation difficulties and problematic digital media use are consistently associated with negative outcomes in all adolescents, regardless of sex or academic level. Preventive strategies targeting emotional regulation and digital media behaviors may be broadly applied to reduce emotional and functional problems related to excessive media use. Full article

Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often experience sensory hyperreactivities that interfere with daily life activities. White noise, characterized by its uniformity and its ability to mask environmental sounds, may serve as a tool to improve sensory and emotional regulation in children with ASD. The primary objective was to evaluate the response to white noise in improving self-regulation in minors with ASD. As a secondary objective, the study assessed whether there were differences in the response to white noise between patients with ASD and those with ASD and Intellectual Disability (ID). This study was conducted in the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychology Department of Hospital Clínic of Barcelona. A total of 54 patients, aged between 7 and 17 years, were included. The patients were divided into two groups: Group 1 consisted of patients diagnosed with ASD (n = 21), and Group 2 included patients diagnosed with ASD and ID (n = 33). White noise was offered to the patients, and their response was evaluated before and after the exposure using the Conners Teacher Rating Scale. Overall, the response to white noise in the sample was positive, with a significant difference in scores on the Conners Teacher Rating Scale (p < 0.001). When dividing the sample into the ASD group and the ASD + ID group, it was observed that the ASD + ID group tolerated white noise better and had a longer exposure time, although both groups showed improved scores on the Conners Teacher Rating Scale. White noise may be a valuable tool to enhance well-being in individuals with ASD, reduce motor restlessness, and increase attention span and emotional stability. However, its effectiveness varies across individuals. It is recommended to tailor its use to individual needs and to extend future research by incorporating physiological measures and larger sample sizes. Full article

Background: Today, young people face a variety of social, environmental and psychological challenges, making them more vulnerable to developing mental health issues. Worldwide 15% of adolescents experience poor mental health, with the majority not seeking help or receiving care. Therefore, it is critical that youth mental health services become more youth-friendly to encourage help-seeking. This study examines a new pilot volunteer model of care introduced into a youth mental health service in Melbourne, Australia. The aim of the study is to explore staff perspectives of the volunteer model. Methods: A qualitative research design was undertaken using semi-structured one-on-one interviews. Eight staff participated. Data was thematically analysed using an inductive approach. Results: Two main themes, ‘promoting service use’ and ‘implementation to practice’, were generated, along with sub-themes. The themes highlight benefits to staff such as reductions in workload and benefits to volunteers through the gaining of experience and knowledge. However, there was a need to support volunteers through greater training and supervision. Conclusions: Volunteers in youth mental health services can create a welcoming environment which enhances access and engagement for young people seeking help. Volunteers in a youth mental health setting can enhance accessibility, reducing staff workload and fostering meaningful engagement. Full article
