Background/Objectives: Infant acute malnutrition increases the risk of morbidity and mortality but also has adverse effects on growth, cognitive development, and quality of life. Ready-to-use therapeutic foods (RUTFs) represent the standard treatment in moderate (MAM) or severe acute malnutrition (SAM) cases, but acceptability and adherence in culturally diverse settings remain poorly understood. To evaluate the acceptability and adherence to RUTF treatment among children with MAM or SAM in rural and indigenous communities of three Mexican states. Methods: We conducted a mixed-methods study in Chihuahua, Guerrero, and Chiapas between February and August 2024. A total of 66 children aged 6–59 months with confirmed MAM or SAM diagnoses were enrolled, with 48 completing the study. Acceptability was assessed by weighing leftovers of the consumption RUTF sachet and using 5-point hedonic scales evaluating taste, texture, appearance, and smell. Adherence was measured by comparing consumed versus prescribed RUTF sachets. Semi-structured interviews with primary caregivers explored perceptions, barriers, and facilitators of RUTF use. Results: Consumption-based acceptability was achieved by 85% of participants. On the 5-point hedonic scale, 77% of participants rated RUTF as pleasant or very pleasant. Overall treatment adherence was adequate (≥70%) in 79.2% of cases. Qualitative information revealed primary caregivers’ perceptions about weight gain and increased appetite as benefits. Conclusions: Since acceptability and adherence were adequate and a high score was obtained on the hedonic scale, which led to an improvement in the nutritional status of MAM or SAM cases, the feasibility and acceptability of RUTFs in highly vulnerable community contexts in Mexico was reaffirmed. Background: Exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of corrected age (CA) is recommended for premature infants with very low birth weight (<1500 g) (VLBW). B vitamins are essential for normal development and growth, including DNA methylation, and we investigated whether exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months provides an adequate cobalamin, folate, vitamin B6, and vitamin B2 status compared to additional or exclusive formula feeding from term to 12 months CA. Methods: In recruited infants born prematurely with VLBW, levels of vitamin B12 (cobalamin), folate, vitamin B6 (pyridoxal 5′-phosphate, PLP), vitamin B2 (riboflavin), and the metabolic markers, total homocysteine (tHcy) and methylmalonic acid (MMA), were determined at term (n = 35) and at 2 (n = 47), 6 (n = 48), and 12 months (n = 58) CA. Results: Only a minority of the infants were given multivitamin supplementation, and this was associated with higher PLP and riboflavin levels. One-third of the infants were exclusively breastfed to 6 months CA, and these had lower cobalamin, PLP, and riboflavin concentrations compared to formula-fed infants; additionally, 80% had plasma tHcy concentrations ≥ 6.5 µmol/L, indicative of cobalamin deficiency during the first 6 months CA. Serious deficiency of one or more B vitamins was evident in 3–9% of the infants at each time point during the first 12 months CA, more often in breastfed infants, but not exclusively. Conclusions: Exclusive breastfeeding with inadequate multivitamin supplementation and no specific recommendation for introduction of solid food does not provide an adequate B vitamin status in infants born prematurely with VLBW. Nutritional micronutrient recommendations must be improved, and regular evaluation of vitamin status should be implemented in the follow-up for premature VLBW infants. Full article

Background: Protein–energy wasting (PEW) is a major predictor of morbidity and mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), even before the initiation of dialysis. Its multifactorial pathogenesis includes reduced dietary intake, chronic inflammation, metabolic acidosis, hormonal disturbances, and dysbiosis of the gut microbiota. Early recognition and targeted management are crucial for preventing muscle loss, functional decline, and adverse outcomes. Methods: This narrative review summarises and integrates current evidence from the literature on nutritional and metabolic interventions to prevent and treat protein–energy wasting in patients with nondialysis chronic kidney disease. Relevant clinical trials, meta-analyses, and experimental studies published up to date were evaluated, focusing on dietary strategies, metabolic modulation, physical exercise, and gut microbiome-targeted therapies. Results: Adequate energy and protein intake remain the cornerstone of PEW management, based on available clinical and observational evidence. Individualised diets emphasising high-quality and plant-based proteins, oral nutritional supplements, and ketoanalogues can attenuate muscle wasting. Correction of metabolic acidosis and inflammation enhances protein anabolism and nitrogen balance. Physical exercise acts synergistically with dietary interventions to preserve muscle mass and function. Novel approaches—such as modulating the gut–kidney axis with pre-, pro-, and postbiotics or supplementing with short-chain fatty acids—show promise in improving metabolic and inflammatory profiles. Conclusions: The management of PEW in nondialysis CKD requires a personalised approach that integrates nutrition, physical activity, metabolic correction and microbiome modulation. Early, coordinated intervention may help to slow the progression of CKD and improve patient survival and quality of life. Full article

Background/Objectives: Older adults often face nutrition challenges due to mobility issues, chronic conditions, and limited access to adequate nutrition. Digital and technology-based interventions, including those with nutrition education, nutrition counseling and Medically Tailored Meals [MTMs], can help address these barriers. However, the extent and characteristics of such programs in the United States remain unclear. This scoping review aimed to map the existing evidence on digital and technology-based (“digi-tech”) nutrition interventions for older adults in the United States, with particular attention to the presence, characteristics, and gaps related to MTMs. Methods: This scoping review followed the PRISMA-ScR framework to map existing evidence on technology-enabled nutrition care interventions for older adults aged ≥ 60 years in the United States. Systematic searches were conducted across multiple databases, yielding 18,177 records. Following title and abstract screening, full-text review, and eligibility assessment, 16 intervention studies were included. Study designs comprised randomized controlled trials, quasi-experimental and non-randomized studies, mixed-methods feasibility studies, pilot studies, and one retrospective longitudinal cohort study. Data were extracted on study design, population characteristics, intervention components, technology modalities, outcomes, feasibility, acceptability, and reported barriers. Results: Interventions varied in duration [8 weeks to ≥12 months] and content. Foci ranged from remote nutrition education and mobile app-based tracking to multicomponent interventions integrating exercise, nutrition counseling, health literacy, and meal delivery. Telehealth was the most commonly used technology modality, followed by mobile health applications, wearable devices, and online educational platforms. Most interventions reported high feasibility and acceptability, with improvements in diet quality, adherence to healthy eating patterns, clinical measures such as HbA1c and blood pressure, and functional performance. Common implementation barriers included declining technology use over time, digi-tech literacy, and access to devices or the internet. Notably, no studies evaluated a digi-tech-based MTMs intervention exclusively for older adults in the U.S. Conclusions: Digital and technology-based nutrition interventions show promise for improving dietary and health outcomes in older adults, but there is insufficient empirical evidence. Future research might develop and evaluate hybrid digi-tech intervention models that leverage the potential of digi-tech tools while addressing barriers to technology adoption among older adults. Background: Calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) are essential micronutrients integral to metabolic processes and cardiovascular health. Emerging evidence suggests that the dietary Ca:Mg ratio may influence chronic disease risk, yet variability in this ratio across diverse demographic groups and its relationship to body composition and vitamin D status remain unclear. Methods: Dietary intakes of Ca and Mg were assessed using validated Food Frequency Questionnaires (FFQs) and body composition was quantified via Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) scans. Relationships between dietary Ca:Mg ratios and demographics, body composition parameters (lean and fat mass), and vitamin D and parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels were examined statistically using SPSS ver. 29.0 and R ver. 4.5.1 (2025) employing Kruskal–Wallis, regression, and moderated mediation analyses. Results: We examined 155 healthy adults with a mean age of 36.6 ± 12.5 years. Only 16.8% had adequate intakes of Mg compared with 45.8% who had adequate dietary Ca intakes. Significant differences in the Ca:Mg ratio were observed across racial groups (p = 0.023) and age groups (p = 0.017). South Asian Indians exhibited the highest median Ca:Mg ratio (4.83), whereas African Americans exhibited the lowest (2.67). Interestingly, our moderated mediation analysis indicated that African Americans were the most sensitive to the impact of PTH changes on the balance of Ca:Mg (indirect effect = −0.762, 95% CI [−1.298, −0.234]), indicating that even slight shifts in their Ca:Mg balances cause significant elevation in the PTH, which, in turn, leads to lowering of their vitamin D levels. Young adults (ages 18–29) had the highest median Ca:Mg ratio (4.73). No statistically significant differences were detected based on Gender (p = 0.425 and BMI (p = 0.744) on Ca:Mg ratios. Additionally, dietary Ca:Mg ratios were positively associated with sPTH in males (r = 0.203, p < 0.05), but not with body composition. Conclusion: Important variations in dietary Ca:Mg ratios exist across racial and age demographics, notably among young adults, and specific ethnic groups exhibited elevated ratios. Tailored nutritional interventions may be necessary for these populations to optimize Ca:Mg balance and support metabolic and cardiovascular health outcomes in these populations. Full article

Background: Nutrition during the perinatal period, including pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, and lactation, is a critical determinant of maternal and neonatal health. While the importance of balanced nutrition is well established, the integration of nutritional counseling into midwifery care remains inconsistent across settings. Evidence suggests that midwives are uniquely positioned to deliver nutrition-related support, yet gaps persist in their formal training and in the availability of structured guidance. These gaps are particularly evident in certain regions, such as Greece, where dedicated national guidelines for perinatal nutrition are lacking. Methods: This systematized narrative review synthesises evidence from studies published between 2010 and 2025, retrieved through PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, and relevant national guidelines. Although the synthesis draws on diverse study designs to provide contextual depth, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were prioritized and synthesized separately to evaluate the effectiveness of midwife-led interventions. In total, ten randomized controlled trials were included in the evidence synthesis, alongside additional observational and qualitative studies that informed the narrative analysis. Both international and Greek literature were examined to capture current practices, challenges, and knowledge gaps in the nutritional dimension of midwifery care. Results: Findings indicate that adequate intake of macronutrients and micronutrients, including iron, folic acid, vitamin D, iodine, calcium, and omega-3 fatty acids, is essential for optimal maternal and neonatal outcomes. Despite this, studies consistently report insufficient nutritional knowledge among midwives, limited confidence in providing counseling, and variability in clinical practice. Socio-cultural factors, such as dietary traditions and migration-related challenges, further influence nutritional behaviors and access to guidance. Emerging approaches, including e-health tools, group counseling models, and continuity-of-care frameworks, show promise in enhancing midwives’ capacity to integrate nutrition into perinatal care. Conclusion: Nutrition is a cornerstone of perinatal health, and midwives are strategically placed to address it. However, gaps in training, inconsistent guidelines, and cultural barriers limit the effectiveness of current practices. Strengthening midwifery education in nutrition, developing context-specific tools, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration are essential steps toward more comprehensive and culturally sensitive perinatal care. Future research should focus on longitudinal and intervention studies that assess the impact of midwife-led nutritional counseling on maternal and neonatal outcomes. Full article

Background/Objectives: Adherence to the EAT-Lancet Planetary Health Diet (PHD) may promote human health and environmental sustainability, yet evidence regarding adherence and nutritional adequacy in Australia is limited. Globally, no research to date has used the recently updated 2025 PHD guidelines. We benchmarked the compatibility of Australian adults’ dietary patterns with the 2025 PHD and examined its associations with nutritional adequacy and sociodemographic factors. Methods: This was a cross-sectional analysis of dietary data from 5655 adults who participated in the National Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey. Usual intakes were estimated from two 24 h recalls using the Multiple Source Method. PHD adherence was measured using the Healthy Reference Diet Score (0–130 points). Nutrient adequacy was assessed using the full probability method for iron and the Australian/New Zealand Estimated Average Requirement Cut-Point Method for all other nutrients. Survey-weighted regression models examined associations with nutritional adequacy and sociodemographic factors. Results: The mean PHD adherence score was 50 (SE 0.3) points. Higher adherence was associated with lower odds of inadequate intakes of several micronutrients, but with higher odds of inadequacy for vitamin B12 (OR: 1.24; 95% CI: 1.06, 1.45) and calcium (OR: 1.09; 95% CI: 1.01, 1.17). PHD adherence was higher among females, older adults, those with higher educational attainment, those born in countries where English is not the main language, two-person households and non-smokers; adherence was non-linearly associated with alcohol and was lower among those with a Body Mass Index ≥ 30 kg/m2. Conclusions: PHD adherence in Australia was low. Higher adherence was associated with improved adequacy for several micronutrients. Trade-offs for vitamin B12 and calcium warrant consideration. Equity-conscious strategies will be needed to support the adoption of nutritionally adequate, environmentally sustainable diets. Full article

Background/Objectives: (P)rehabilitation, comprising structured exercise, nutritional optimisation, and/or psychological support delivered pre- or postoperatively, has demonstrated efficacy in improving outcomes across the cancer care continuum. However, access remains limited. Technology-enabled (p)rehabilitation offers a novel solution with the potential to enhance equity and continuity of care. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the efficacy of technology-enabled (p)rehabilitation on perioperative and patient-reported outcomes among individuals undergoing thoracic and/or abdominopelvic cancer surgery. Methods: Six databases were search from inception to October 2024. Eligible studies were randomised controlled trials (RCTs) comparing technology-enabled (p)rehabilitation with usual care, placebo, or non-technology-based interventions in adults undergoing thoracic and/or abdominopelvic cancer surgery. Outcomes included postoperative complications, hospital readmissions, hospital length of stay (LOS), quality of life (QoL), pain, anxiety, depression, fatigue, distress, and satisfaction. Higher scores indicated improved QoL or worse symptom severity. Risk of bias was assessed using the revised Cochrane tool, and evidence strength was determined using GRADE methodology. Relative risks (RR) and mean differences (MD) were calculated using random-effects meta-analysis. Results: Seventeen RCTs (18 publications, n = 1690) were included. Trials most commonly evaluated application-based platforms (n = 8) and the majority exhibited some risk of bias. Technology-enabled (p)rehabilitation was associated with a significant reduction in LOS (MD = 1.33 days; 95% CI: 0.59–2.07; seven trials), and improvements in pain (MD = 6.12; 95% CI: 3.40–8.84; four trials), depression (MD = 2.82; 95% CI: 0.65–4.99; five trials), fatigue (MD = 10.10; 95% CI: 6.97–13.23; three trials) and distress (MD = 1.23; 95% CI: 0.30–2.16; single trial) compared with controls. Conclusions: Technology-enabled (p)rehabilitation shows promise in reducing LOS and improving selected patient-reported outcomes following thoracic and abdominopelvic cancer surgery. Although evidence is limited due to the small number of studies, modest sample sizes, methodological heterogeneity, and intervention variability, the overall findings justify further investigation. Large-scale, adequately powered clinical trials are required to confirm efficacy and guide clinical effectiveness and implementation studies. Full article

Background: Postnatal growth failure in very preterm infants remains a major concern in neonatal care and clinical management is complicated by the lack of a standardized definition. This study aims to identify risk factors for growth faltering (GF) and undernutrition (UN) at hospital discharge, defined according to the latest consensus definitions established by the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN). Methods: We conducted a retrospective observational study of 416 preterm infants (gestational age < 32 weeks and/or birth weight < 1500 g). Growth was monitored using the Intergrowth 21st standards. In line with ESPGHAN criteria, GF was defined longitudinally as a weight for age (WFA) z-score decline ≥ 1 SD from birth, while UN was defined cross-sectionally as a WFA or length for age z-score < −2 SD at discharge. Logistic regression models were used to determine independent predictors for both growth phenotypes. Results: At discharge, the prevalence of GF and UN was 45.3% and 33.1%, respectively. In infants born without growth restriction (GR), UN was almost entirely driven by GF (89.7%). In contrast, 85.5% of infants born with GR remained undernourished at discharge. Multivariate analysis identified bronchopulmonary dysplasia and higher maximal postnatal weight loss as major independent risk factors for GF, while female sex and human milk feeding at discharge were associated with a lower risk of GF. For infants born with adequate weight, maternal hypertension, extremely low birth weight, and the co-occurrence of GF were the strongest predictors of UN. Conclusions: Nearly half of very preterm infants experience significant growth impairment before discharge. By assessing the dynamic process of GF and the static endpoint of UN, we identified distinct clinical trajectories. Standardized ESPGHAN criteria allow for the identification of high-risk “phenotypes”—particularly those with GR at birth or severe neonatal morbidity—enabling more targeted and intensive nutritional management during the critical developmental window. Over 10% of US children and adolescents have attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), with a similar prevalence among youth athletes. While ADHD may confer certain athletic performance advantages such as heightened quickness, decision-making and periods of hyperfocus, it also poses some challenges including reduced concentration, frustration, and possible increased injury risk. Pharmacologic treatments, including stimulant-based medications, can improve attentiveness and athletic performance but could alter nutritional behaviors such as appetite suppression. This paper reviews the current literature on nutritional strategies to provide practical sports nutrition guidelines for children and adolescent athletes with ADHD. Evidence suggests that optimizing energy intake, emphasizing complex carbohydrates, improving fat quality intake, and consuming adequate amounts of micronutrients may support both athletic performance and ADHD symptom management. In contrast, excessive added sugars and saturated fats are associated with poorer outcomes and manifestation of ADHD symptoms. Although no research examining nutritional interventions in youth athletes with ADHD have been performed, applying established sports nutrition principles for youth athletes with ADHD offers a promising approach to enhance performance, reduce injury risk, and support the long-term health of the athlete. Parental perceptions of healthy eating often diverge from children’s actual diets, but this gap is poorly documented in Central Asia. We examined how parents’ priorities for key food groups relate to nutrient intakes in 390 urban children aged 1–6 years in Central Kazakhstan. In a cross-sectional study, parents completed a 24 h multiple-pass dietary recall and rated the importance of fats and sweets, meat and fish, dairy, vegetables and fruits, and bread and potatoes on 5-point scales. Nutrient intakes were calculated using software, compared with national DRIs, and analyzed using rank-based tests and Spearman correlations. Parents reported near-ceiling priority for restricting fats and sweets and consistently high priority for bread and potatoes, whereas vegetables, fruits, meat/fish, and dairy were rated moderately important, with dairy under-prioritized in 1–2-year-olds. On the recalled day, median intakes of fat, dietary fiber, vitamin C, and calcium were below national recommendations at all ages, and median intakes of iron, thiamine, and niacin were particularly low at 3–4 years, while sodium intake exceeded recommended levels; the 3–4-year group showed the most pronounced clustering of shortfalls. Prevalence estimates indicated that most children had intakes below recommendations for dietary fiber and calcium and above recommendations for sodium, underscoring population-wide nutritional imbalance. Across all scales, parental priorities showed only weak, non-significant associations with nutrient intakes (|r| < 0.11). These findings indicate a perception–intake gap and support interventions that ensure adequate fats, fiber, vitamin C, calcium, and bioavailable iron in preschool diets. Full article

Background: Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) have emerged as a critical component of diet quality, yet data on the associations between UPF and nutrient intakes remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate nutrient consumption in relation to UPF intake and adherence to international dietary guidelines for non-communicable disease (NCD) prevention. Methods: Data from 469 individuals aged 2–18 years enrolled in the Hellenic National Nutrition and Health Survey (HNNHS) were analyzed. Intakes were assessed using two 24 h recalls, and foods were classified according to the NOVA system. Participants were categorized by UPF energy intake tertiles. Nutrient adequacy was assessed using Nordic Nutrition Recommendations, European Society of Cardiology guidelines for macronutrients, and the Institute of Medicine’s Estimated Average Requirements and Adequate Intake values for micronutrients. Results: Children in the highest UPF tertile had significantly higher intakes of energy, carbohydrates, added sugars, saturated fats, polyunsaturated fats, and cholesterol, but lower intakes of protein compared to those in the lowest tertile. Fiber intake remained inadequate across all tertiles, with no significant differences. Regarding adherence to NCD prevention guidelines, children in the 3rd UPF tertile had a 2.3 times higher prevalence ratio for exceeding added sugar recommendations, while their protein intake prevalence ratio was 0.8 times lower. For micronutrients, the highest UPF tertile showed significantly elevated intakes of vitamins E, B1, folate, calcium, iron, copper, and sodium, but lower potassium intake compared to the lowest tertile. Conclusions: Our results underscore the need for effective public health strategies to improve diet quality in children and adolescents and prevent diet-related NCDs. Full article

Background/Objectives: Oral function impairment negatively impacts nutrition, health, and quality of life in older adults. While retaining ≥20 natural teeth is often recommended for maintaining oral function, its validity is uncertain, particularly for those who adapt to tooth loss with dentures. This study aimed to determine the minimum number of remaining functional teeth necessary to prevent oral hypofunction in older adults, focusing on two diagnostic criteria: decreased masticatory function and reduced occlusal force. Methods: A total of 154 participants (≥60 years) were included. Oral examination assessed the number of remaining functional teeth. To assess masticatory function, masticatory performance was objectively measured using a visual scoring method of gummy jelly, and occlusal force was quantified with pressure-sensitive film. Pearson’s correlation analyzed relationships among variables, while receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis identified optimal tooth number cut-offs for detecting decreased masticatory function (score ≤ 2) and reduced occlusal force (<500 N). Results: Significant positive correlations were found between the number of remaining functional teeth and both masticatory performance (r = 0.591, p < 0.001) and occlusal force (r = 0.453, p < 0.001). ROC indicated that 17 teeth was the optimal threshold for identifying both decreased masticatory performance and reduced occlusal force, with sensitivities of 0.79 and 0.72 and specificities of 0.93 and 0.88, respectively. Conclusions: Retention of 17 or more remaining functional teeth may be sufficient to maintain adequate masticatory performance and occlusal force. These findings serves as a preliminary guide for treatment planning and targeted interventions focused on preserving tooth retention and improving oral function in aging populations. Full article

The red prickly pear (Opuntia streptacantha) is a fruit that is distinguished by its sensory properties and high content of bioactive compounds. Its rapid spoilage rate significantly impacts its commercialization, underscoring the urgent need for effective preservation methods. This study investigated the effectiveness of various juice preservation techniques—refrigeration, freezing, pasteurization, and vacuum packaging —in maintaining the microbiological quality, physicochemical properties, and antioxidant capacity of red prickly pear juice during storage. The most effective preservation method was found to be freezing the vacuum-packaged and pasteurized juice, referred to as J4. This method adequately maintained key nutritional and physicochemical qualities after 12 months, which was evidenced by a reduction in the microbial growth and the preservation of pH (4.64), acidity (0.74 g citric acid L−1), antioxidant activity (2.6–2.9 mmol TE L−1), as well as the content of phenols (506 mg GAE L−1), betalains (141.2 mg L−1), and total sugars (125 g L−1). Furthermore, sensory analysis comparing J4-treated juice to control juice revealed no significant differences, confirming that J4 is an effective method for preserving the nutritional, functional, and sensory qualities of red prickly pear juice. Drought events intensified by climate change severely compromise the physiological stability and productivity of Coffea arabica, particularly in rainfed systems, underscoring the need to identify cultivars with greater functional resilience. This study evaluated the physiological, nutritional and biochemical responses of seedlings from ten cultivars subjected to adequate irrigation (AW), severe water deficit (SWD) and rehydration (RI). Water potential, gas exchange, oxidative stress markers, stomatal traits and foliar macro- and micronutrients were quantified. Most cultivars exhibited pronounced reductions in the pre-dawn leaf water potential (Ψpd), photosynthesis (A), stomatal conductance (gs) and transpiration (E), together with increases in oxidative stress indicators under SWD. In contrast, Obatá amarillo, Castillo, and Arará maintained greater hydraulic stability, more efficient stomatal regulation, higher water-use efficiency, and lower oxidative stress, accompanied by a more effective post-stress recovery after RI. Regarding nutrient dynamics, Geisha, Castillo, and Arará showed higher K+ accumulation, while Catimor bolo presented elevated Ca2+, P, and Fe2+ contents, elements associated with metabolic reactivation and structural recovery after stress. Geisha and Marsellesa displayed an adaptive, recovery-driven resilience strategy following drought stress. Overall, the findings identify Obatá amarillo, Castillo, and Arará as the most drought-tolerant cultivars, highlighting their potential relevance for breeding programs aimed at improving drought resilience in coffee.
