The goals of the European Union towards the energy transition imply profound changes in the energy field, so as to promote sustainable energy development while fostering economic growth. To achieve these changes, the incorporation of sustainable technologies supporting decentralisation, energy efficiency, renewable energy production, and demand flexibility is of vital importance. Blockchain has the potential to change energy services towards this direction. To optimally exploit blockchain, innovative business models need to be designed, identifying the opportunities emerging from unmet needs, while also considering potential risks so as to take action to overcome them. In this context, the scope of this paper is to examine the opportunities and the risks that emerge from the adoption of blockchain in four innovative business models, while also identifying mitigation strategies to support and accelerate the energy transition, thus proposing optimal approaches of exploitation of blockchain in energy services. The business models concern Energy Performance Contracting with P4P guarantees, improved self-consumption in energy cooperatives, energy efficiency and flexibility services for natural gas boilers, and smart energy management for EV chargers and HVAC appliances. Firstly, the value proposition of the business models is analysed and results in a comprehensive SWOT analysis. Based on the findings of the analysis and consultations with relevant market actors, in combination with the examination of the relevant literature, risks are identified and evaluated through a qualitative assessment approach. Subsequently, specific mitigation strategies are proposed to address the detected risks. This research demonstrates that blockchain integration into these business models can significantly improve energy efficiency, reduce operational costs, enhance security, and support a more decentralised energy system, providing actionable insights for stakeholders to implement blockchain solutions effectively. Furthermore, according to the results, technological and legal risks are the most significant, followed by political, economic, and social risks, while environmental risks of blockchain integration are not as important. Strategies to address risks relevant to blockchain exploitation include ensuring policy alignment, emphasising economic feasibility, facilitating social inclusion, prioritising security and interoperability, consulting with legal experts, and using consensus algorithms with low energy consumption. The findings offer clear guidance for energy service providers, policymakers, and technology developers, assisting in the design, deployment, and risk mitigation of blockchain-enabled business models to accelerate sustainable energy development. The global rise in antimicrobial resistance poses a major threat to public health, with multidrug-resistant bacterial infections expected to surpass cancer in mortality by 2050. As traditional antibiotic pipelines stagnate, novel therapeutic alternatives are critically needed. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), particularly those derived from marine organisms, have emerged as promising antimicrobial candidates due to their broad-spectrum activity, structural diversity, and distinctive mechanisms of action. Unlike conventional antibiotics, AMPs can disrupt microbial membranes, inhibit biofilm formation, and even modulate immune responses, making them highly effective against resistant bacteria. This review highlights the potential of marine AMPs as next-generation therapeutics, emphasizing their efficacy against multidrug-resistant pathogens and biofilm-associated infections. Furthermore, marine AMPs show promise in combating persister cells and disrupting quorum sensing pathways, offering new strategies for tackling chronic infections. Despite their potential, challenges such as production scalability and limited clinical validation remain; nevertheless, the use of new technologies and bioinformatic tools is accelerating the discovery and optimization of these peptides, paving the way for bypassing these challenges. This review consolidates current findings on marine AMPs, advocating for their continued exploration as viable tools in the fight against antimicrobial resistance. Full article

The composition of the gut and/or tumor microbiome has been intricately involved in the onset of carcinogenesis, tumor progression, therapy response, and patient outcomes in diverse solid cancers. The microbiome type, composition, and their metabolome have been functionally implicated in the multifarious cellular processes, transformation, proliferation, tumor immune evasion, cellular migration, etc. Despite such compelling evidence on the role of microbiome interactions in cancer, the realization of their role in neuroblastoma (NB), the deadly extracranial tumor in infants is few and fragmentary. This review comprehends the composition, diversity, and significance of microbiota in human health. Further, this review discusses the microbiota composition, their mode of action, and their signaling flow through and cellular processes in diverse cancers including NB. Precisely, this study for the first time has realized the functional relevance and clinical significance of the gut and tumor microbiome for NB. Interestingly, large cohort clinical and preclinical in vivo models of NB realized the following: gut microbiota predicts the risk for NB; postnatal (and or not maternal transmission) microbiome rearrangements; gut microbial effect on NB pathogenesis; tumor-altering gut microbial composition; microbial composition predicts treatment outcomes in NB; prebiotic remedies for stabilizing NB-associated microbial rearrangements; microbial composition in tumor-infiltrating microbiota predicts NB outcomes. This study analyzes the strategic and institutional frameworks that precede the formulation of trade agreements, with a focus on the European Union’s external action and its link to the Sustainable Development Goals. Based on a documentary research design, this study examines official documents from the EU and the United Nations, as well as the academic literature indexed in Scopus and Web of Science. The methodological process involved four phases: systematic search, selection and classification, inductive content coding, and interpretative analysis. Through this process, this study identifies discursive patterns, normative tensions, and policy orientations that reveal the EU’s evolving approach to sustainable trade governance. The findings highlight the existence of a growing institutional alignment between trade policy and sustainable development frameworks, yet also expose persistent gaps in coherence and implementation. This article contributes to the academic debate by offering a critical and structured analytical lens to understand how trade agreements are politically and institutionally prefigured before their negotiation phase. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) remains significantly underdiagnosed in women, resulting in a persistent gender gap with important clinical, functional, and psychosocial implications. This narrative review explores the multifactorial barriers contributing to diagnostic disparities, including the male-oriented structure of current diagnostic criteria, the prevalence of co-occurring psychiatric conditions, and the phenomenon of social camouflaging shaped by culturally reinforced gender norms. These factors frequently lead to delayed identification, clinical misinterpretation, and suboptimal care. The review synthesizes evidence from clinical, psychological, and sociocultural research to demonstrate how the under-recognition of ASD in women impacts mental health outcomes, access to education, occupational stability, and overall quality of life. Special emphasis is placed on the consequences of missed or late diagnoses for healthcare delivery and the educational needs of clinicians involved in ASD assessment and care. This article concludes with actionable, evidence-based recommendations for enhancing diagnostic sensitivity, developing gender-responsive screening strategies, and integrating training on female autism presentation into medical and allied health education. Addressing these challenges is essential to reducing diagnostic inequities and ensuring timely, accurate, and person-centered care for autistic women throughout their lifespan. Full article

The growing use of mobile health (mHealth) technologies adds complexity and risk to the healthcare environment. This paper presents a multi-layered cybersecurity assessment of an in-house mHealth platform (PHGL-COVID), comprising a Docker-based server infrastructure, a Samsung Galaxy A55 smartphone, and a Galaxy Watch 7 wearable. The objective was to identify vulnerabilities across the server, mobile, and wearable components by emulating real-world attacks and conducting systematic penetration tests on each layer. Tools and methods specifically tailored to each technology were applied, revealing exploitable configurations, insecure Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) communications, and exposure of Personal Health Records (PHRs). Key findings included incomplete container isolation, BLE metadata leakage, and persistent abuse of Android privacy permissions. This work delivers both a set of actionable recommendations for developers and system architects to strengthen the security of mHealth platforms, and a reproducible audit methodology that has been validated in a real-world deployment, effectively bridging the gap between theoretical threat models and practical cybersecurity practices in healthcare systems. Electric bikes (e-bikes) offer a low-carbon, space-efficient solution for campus mobility, yet their sustainable potential is increasingly challenged by patterns of non-compliant use, including speeding, informal parking, and unauthorized charging. This study integrates the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to examine the cognitive and contextual factors that shape such behaviors among university students. Drawing on a survey of 408 e-bike users and structural equation modeling, the results show that non-compliance is primarily driven by perceived usefulness, ease of action, and behavioral feasibility, with affective and normative factors playing indirect, reinforcing roles. Importantly, actual behavior is influenced not only by intention but also by students’ perceived capacity to act within low-enforcement environments. These findings highlight the need to align behavioral perceptions with sustainability goals. The study contributes to sustainable mobility governance by clarifying key psychological pathways and offering targeted insights for designing perception-sensitive interventions in campus transport systems. Furthermore, by promoting compliance-oriented campus mobility, this research highlights a pathway toward enhancing the resilience of transport systems through behavioral adaptation within semi-regulated environments. Epimedium-Derived Exosome-Loaded GelMA Hydrogel Enhances MC3T3-E1 Osteogenesis via PI3K/Akt Pathway

Healing large bone defects remains challenging. Gelatin scaffolds are biocompatible and biodegradable, but lack osteoinductive activity. Plant-derived exosomes carry miRNAs, growth factors, and proteins that modulate osteogenesis, but free exosomes suffer from poor stability, limited targeting, and low bioavailability in vivo. We developed a 3D GelMA hydrogel loaded with Epimedium-derived exosomes (“GelMA@Exo”) to improve exosome retention, stability, and sustained release. Its effects on MC3T3-E1 preosteoblasts—including proliferation, osteogenic differentiation, migration, and senescence—were evaluated via in vitro assays. Angiogenic potential was assessed using HUVECs. Underlying mechanisms were examined at transcriptomic and protein levels to elucidate GelMA@Exo’s therapeutic osteogenesis actions. GelMA@Exo exhibited sustained exosome release, enhancing exosome retention and cellular uptake. In vitro, GelMA@Exo markedly boosted MC3T3-E1 proliferation, migration, and mineralized nodule formation, while reducing senescence markers and promoting angiogenesis in HUVECs. Mechanistically, GelMA@Exo upregulated key osteogenic markers (RUNX2, TGF-β1, Osterix, COL1A1, ALPL) and activated the PI3K/Akt pathway. Transcriptomic data confirmed global upregulation of osteogenesis-related genes and bone-regeneration pathways. This study presents a GelMA hydrogel functionalized with plant-derived exosomes, which synergistically provides osteoinductive stimuli and structural support. The GelMA@Exo platform offers a versatile strategy for localized delivery of natural bioactive molecules and a promising approach for bone tissue engineering. Our findings provide strong experimental evidence for the translational potential of plant-derived exosomes in regenerative medicine. Full article

In classical physics, the traditional way to handle dynamics is to work with initial value problems: Specifying all variables and their time-derivatives at a certain time will, together with the equations of motion, give the state of the system at any time. In this paper, it is questioned whether this is the right way to treat cosmology. The main reason is that cosmology, as opposed to almost all other parts of physics, deals with genuinely global problems. The main example in this paper will be the accelerating expansion. It is not claimed that the model studied here gives any kind of final explanation of this phenomenon. Nevertheless, it shows that what is commonly interpreted as the result of some dark energy, could instead be the result of a global condition for the universe. This model cannot be treated as a classical initial value problem. But an interesting additional property is that it can explain why the rate of acceleration now seems to be decreasing with time. This paper presents a procedural method aimed at protecting maritime critical infrastructure, which is essential for the functioning of developed nations. A novel approach, developed by the authors, is introduced—focusing on the behavioral analysis of vessels to enable early identification of suspicious maritime activity and to prevent damage or destruction to key infrastructure elements. An integrated system is proposed, combining real-time electronic surveillance with continuous access to and analysis of data from both national and international databases. Drawing inspiration from medical sciences, a screening-based methodology has been developed. Data on vessels collected from various sources are processed according to the criteria adopted by the authors, using a multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) approach. MCDA is a decision-support method that considers multiple criteria simultaneously. It allows for the comparison and evaluation of different options, even when they are difficult to compare directly. This characteristic is used to select high-risk vessels for further monitoring. An initial classification of a vessel as suspicious does not constitute proof of criminal activity but rather serves as a trigger for further coordinated actions. Data on vessels is collected from the AIS (automatic identification system) and platforms that store vessel history. The AIS is a powerful tool that processes parameters such as a ship’s speed and course. This article presents sample results from surveillance and pre-selection analyses using the AIS, followed by a multi-criteria assessment of the behavior of vessels identified through this process. The results are presented both graphically and numerically. The authors conducted several scenarios, analyzing different groups of vessels. Based on this analysis, recommendations were developed for the interpretation of the findings. Full article

Background/Objectives: The breast cancer susceptibility gene 1 (BRCA1) is a tumor suppressor gene whose mutations are associated with increased susceptibility to develop breast or ovarian cancer. BRCA1 mainly exerts its protective effects through DNA double-strand break repair. Although not itself a transcriptional factor, BRCA1, through its multiple protein interaction domains, exerts transcriptional coregulation. In addition, BRCA1 expression alters cellular metabolism including inhibition of de novo fatty acid synthesis, changes in cellular bioenergetics, and activation of antioxidant defenses. Some of these actions may contribute to its global oncosuppressive effects. However, the breadth of metabolic pathways reprogrammed by BRCA1 is not fully elucidated. Methods: Breast cancer cells expressing BRCA1 were investigated by multiplatform metabolomics, metabolism-related transcriptomics, and joint metabolomics/transcriptomics data processing techniques, namely two-way orthogonal partial least squares and pathway analysis. Results: Joint analyses revealed the most important metabolites, genes, and pathways of metabolic reprogramming in BRCA1-expressing breast cancer cells. The breadth of metabolic reprogramming included fatty acid synthesis, bioenergetics, HIF-1 signaling pathway, antioxidation, nucleic acid synthesis, and other pathways. Among them, rewiring of glycerophospholipid (including phosphatidylcholine, -serine and -inositol) metabolism and increased arginine metabolism have not been reported yet. Conclusions: Rewired glycerophospholipid and arginine metabolism were identified as components of BRCA1-induced metabolic reprogramming in breast cancer cells. The study helps to identify metabolites that are candidate biomarkers of the BRCA1 genotype and metabolic pathways that can be exploited in targeted therapies. Full article

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of mixtures of Thuja occidentalis L. essential oil and diatomite (EO + DE) compared to each substance separately in reducing economically important pests such as black bean aphid (BBA) Aphis fabae Scop., Colorado potato beetle (CPB) Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say., and pea leaf weevil (PLW) Sitona lineatus L. The effects on mortality (all pests) and foraging intensity (CPB and PLW) were tested. The improvement in effectiveness using a mixture of EO + DE versus single components against BBA was dose- and the developmental stage-dependent. The effect of enhancing CPB foraging inhibition through DE addition was obtained at a concentration of 0.2% EO (both females and males of CPB) and 0.5% EO (males) in no-choice experiments. In choice experiments, mixtures EO + DE with both 0.2% and 0.5% EO concentrations resulted in a significant reduction in CPB foraging. A significant strengthening effect of EO 0.5% through the addition of DE at a dose of 10% against PLW males was observed in the no-choice experiment, while, when the beetles had a choice, the synergistic effect of a mixture of EO 0.5% and DE 10% was also apparent in females. In conclusion, the use of DE mixtures with EO from T. occidentalis appears to be a promising strategy. The results support the idea of not using doses of EO higher than 0.5%. Full article

Design Thinking (DT) has emerged as a relevant methodology for addressing global challenges aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This study presents a systematic literature review, conducted following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, which analyzes 42 peer-reviewed publications from 2013 to 2023. Through inductive content analysis, 10 core DT principles—such as empathy, iteration, user-centeredness, and systems thinking—I identified and thematically mapped to specific SDGs, including goals related to health, education, innovation, and climate action. The study also presents five real-world cases from diverse sectors such as technology, healthcare, and urban planning, illustrating how DT has been applied to address practical challenges aligned with the SDGs. However, the review identifies persistent gaps in the field: the lack of standardized evaluation frameworks, limited integration across SDG domains, and weak adaptation of ethical and contextual considerations, particularly in vulnerable communities. As a response, this paper recommends the adoption of structured impact assessment tools (e.g., Cities2030, Responsible Design Thinking), integration of design justice principles, and the development of participatory, iterative ecosystems for innovation. By offering both conceptual synthesis and applied insights, this article positions Design Thinking as a strategic and systemic approach for driving sustainable transformation aligned with the 2030 Agenda. Effect of Different Deodorants on SBS-Modified Asphalt Fume Emissions, Asphalt Road Performance, and Mixture Performance

During large-scale pavement construction, the preparation of SBS-modified asphalt typically produces large amounts of harmful fumes. The emergence of deodorants can effectively alleviate the problem of smoke emissions during the asphalt manufacturing process. On the basis of ensuring the original road performance, exploring more suitable dosages and types of deodorant is urgently needed. Five commercial deodorants were evaluated using an asphalt smoke collection system, and UV-visible spectrophotometry (UV) was employed to screen the deodorants based on smoke concentration. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to quantitatively analyze changes in harmful smoke components before and after adding two deodorants. Subsequently, the mechanisms of action of the two different types of deodorants were analyzed microscopically using fluorescence microscopy. Finally, the performance of bitumen and asphalt mixtures after adding deodorants was evaluated. The results showed that deodorant A (reactive type) and D (adsorption type) exhibited the best smoke suppression effects, with optimal addition rates of 0.6% and 0.5%, respectively. Deodorant A reduced benzene homologues by nearly 50% and esters by approximately 40%, while deodorant D reduced benzene homologues by approximately 70% and esters by approximately 60%, without producing new toxic gases. Both deodorants had a minimal impact on the basic properties of bitumen and the road performance of asphalt mixtures, with all indicators meeting technical specifications. This research provides a theoretical basis for the effective application of deodorants in the future, truly enabling a transition from laboratory research to large-scale engineering applications in the construction of environmentally friendly roads. Sustainable Soil Management in Reservoir Riparian Zones: Impacts of Long-Term Water Level Fluctuations on Aggregate Stability and Land Degradation in Southwestern China

Soil structural instability in reservoir riparian zones, induced by water level fluctuations, threatens sustainable land use by accelerating land degradation. This study examined the impact of water-level variations on soil aggregate composition and stability based on key indicators, including water-stable aggregate content (WSAC), mean weight diameter (MWD), and geometric mean diameter (GMD). The Savinov dry sieving, Yoder wet sieving, and Le Bissonnais (LB) methods were employed for analysis. Results indicated that, with decreasing water levels and increasing soil layer, aggregates larger than 5 mm decreased, while aggregates smaller than 0.25 mm increased. Rising water levels and increasing soil layer corresponded to reductions in soil stability indicators (MWD, GMD, and WSAC), highlighting a trend toward soil structural instability. The LB method revealed the lowest aggregate stability under rapid wetting and the highest under slow wetting conditions. Correlation analysis showed that soil organic matter positively correlated with the relative mechanical breakdown index (RMI) (p < 0.05) and negatively correlated with the relative slaking index (RSI), whereas soil pH was negatively correlated with both RMI and RSI (p < 0.05). Comparative analysis of aggregate stability methods demonstrated that results from the dry sieving method closely resembled those from the SW treatment of the LB method, whereas the wet sieving method closely aligned with the FW (Fast Wetting) treatment of the LB method. The Le Bissonnais method not only reflected the outcomes of dry and wet sieving methods but also effectively distinguished the mechanisms of aggregate breakdown. The study concluded that prolonged flooding intensified aggregate dispersion, with mechanical breakdown influenced by water levels and soil layer. Dispersion and mechanical breakdown represent primary mechanisms of soil aggregate instability, further exacerbated by fluctuating water levels. By elucidating degradation mechanisms, this research provides actionable insights for preserving soil health, safeguarding water resources, and promoting sustainable agricultural in ecologically vulnerable reservoir regions of the Yangtze River Basin.
