Soil Amplification and Code Compliance: A Case Study of the 2023 Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes in Hayrullah Neighborhood

In the earthquakes that occurred in the Pazarcık (Mw = 7.7) and Elbistan (Mw = 7.6) districts of Kahramanmaraş Province on 6 February 2023, many buildings collapsed in the Hayrullah neighborhood of the Onikişubat district. In this study, we investigated whether there was a soil amplification effect on the damage occurring in the Hayrullah neighborhood of the Onikişubat district of Kahramanmaraş Province. Firstly, borehole, SPT, MASW (multi-channel surface wave analysis), microtremor, electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), and vertical electrical sounding (VES) tests were carried out in the field to determine the engineering properties and behavior of soil. Laboratory tests were also conducted using samples obtained from bore holes and field tests. Then, an idealized soil profile was created using the laboratory and field test results, and site dynamic soil behavior analyses were performed on the extracted profile. According to The Turkish Building Code (TBC 2018), the earthquake level DD-2 design spectra of the project site were determined and the average design spectrum was created. Considering the seismicity of the project site and TBC (2018) criteria (according to site-specific faulting, distance, and average shear wave velocity), 11 earthquake ground motion sets were selected and harmonized with DD-2 spectra in short, medium, and long periods. Using scaled motions, the soil profile was excited with 22 different earthquake scenarios and the results were obtained for the equivalent and non-linear models. The analysis showed that the soft soil conditions in the area amplified ground shaking by up to 2.8 times, especially for longer periods (1.0–2.5 s). This level of amplification was consistent with the damage observed in mid- to high-rise buildings, highlighting the important role of local site effects in the structural losses seen during the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes. During a prolonged domestication and environmental selection, Brassica rapa has formed diverse morphological types during a cultivation process of up to 8000 years, such as root-type turnips (Brassica rapa var. rapa), leaf-type Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa var. pekinensis), oil-type rapeseed (Brassica rapa L.), and other rich types. China is one of the origins of Brassica rapa L., which is spread all over the east, west, south, and north of China. Studying its origin and evolution holds significant importance for unraveling the cultivation history of Chinese oilseed crops, intraspecific evolutionary relationships, and the utilization value of genetic resources. This article summarizes the cultivation history, evolution, classification research progress, and germplasm resource diversity of Brassica rapa var. oleifera in China. Combining karyotype analysis, genomic information, and wild relatives of Brassica rapa var. oleifera discovered on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, it is proposed that Brassica rapa var. oleifera has the characteristic of polycentric origin, and Gansu Province in China is one of the earliest regions for its cultivation. Brassica rapa var. oleifera, originating from the Mediterranean region, was diffused to the East Asian continent through two independent transmission paths (one via the Turkish Plateau and the other via Central Asia and Siberia). Analyzing the genetic diversity characteristics and evolutionary trajectories of these two transmission paths lays a foundation for clarifying the origin and evolutionary process of Brassica rapa var. oleifera and accelerating the breeding of Brassica rapa var. oleifera in China. Despite existing research on the origin of Brassica rapa L., the domestication process of this species remains unresolved. This study evaluates the levels of natural radioactivity in surface soil samples across all districts of Mardin Province, Turkiye, using data from the Turkish Environmental Radioactivity Atlas. The activity concentration levels of Ra-226, Th-232, K-40, and Cs-137 were re-mapped, and radiological parameters (Raeq, DR, Hex, AEDE, AGDE, and ELCR) were calculated for an environmental risk assessment. The average Ra-226 concentration (33.66 Bq·kg−1) exceeded the Turkiye average but remained near the UNSCEAR global median. The Th-232 concentration (29.37 Bq·kg−1) was lower than both reference values, while K-40 (385.63 Bq·kg−1) was below the Turkiye average but higher than the global median. The Cs-137 concentration (20.52 Bq·kg−1) surpassed the Turkiye average, with the highest value detected in Yeşilli district of Mardin (75.05 Bq·kg−1), suggesting an anthropogenic influence. The radiological parameters indicated that the Raeq and Hex values remained within safe limits across all districts. However, the DR and AEDE exceeded UNSCEAR global medians in Ömerli and Midyat, while the AGDE was elevated in six districts. The ELCR surpassed the global median only in Ömerli. The districts of Artuklu, Derik, Kızıltepe, Mazıdağı, Midyat, and Ömerli exhibited higher natural radioactivity, whereas Dargeçit, Nusaybin, Savur, and Yeşilli had lower risk levels. Nusaybin was identified as the least radiologically hazardous district. Given these findings, radiological parameters should be considered when selecting new residential areas. Further studies with an increased number of soil samples are recommended for a more precise environmental risk assessment. Full article

Because of their diversity, microplastics (MPs), which are synthetic particles smaller than 5 mm, are highly bioavailable and widely distributed. The prevalence of microplastics in aquatic habitats has been extensively studied but less is known about their presence in terrestrial environments and biota. This study examined MP intake in terrestrial environments utilizing gastrointestinal tracts (GITs), with a particular focus on the Turkish worm lizard (Blanus strauchi). Suspected particles discovered in the GITs were removed, measured, and characterized based on size, shape, color, and polymer type in order to evaluate MP ingestion. Out of 118 samples analyzed, 29 specimens (or 24.57%) had microplastic particlesMP length did not significantly correlate with snout–vent length (SVL) and weight. These correlations were tested to determine whether the size or weight of Blanus strauchi influenced the amount or size of MPs found within the GITs. Also, MP consumption by the worm lizard did not correlate with the year of sampling. All particles identified as fibers through FT-IR spectroscopy analysis. The most common type of microplastic was polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The most often detected color was blue, with mean MP lengths ranging from 133 µm to 2929 µm. It has been demonstrated that worm lizards inhabiting soil or sheltering under stones in bushy areas with sparse vegetation consume MPs. Predation is regarded to be the most likely way through which MPs infiltrate terrestrial food webs. Full article

Disasters can be defined as natural, technological, and human-induced events that cause loss of life and socio-economic impacts in societies and stop normal life. Türkiye faces many disasters. The loss of life and economic losses caused by these disasters vary according to the type of disaster. Earthquakes are the natural disasters that affect Türkiye the most. Described as the disaster of the century, the Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes occurred on 6 February 2023 at 04:17 and 13:24 Turkish time. These earthquakes, with epicenters in Pazarcık (Kahramanmaraş) and Elbistan (Kahramanmaraş) with magnitudes of Mw 7.7 and Mw 7.6, affected 11 provinces including Kahramanmaraş, Hatay, and Malatya, killing 50,399 people and damaging 1,279,727 buildings. One of the most significant challenges following earthquakes is the issue of housing, which is addressed through the implementation of temporary housing units. This study aimed to evaluate the temporary shelter areas created after the Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes within the framework of regulations and standards in Türkiye and internationally. The study data were collected through direct observation and participant observation. For this purpose, the “Vali Saim Çotur Tent City”, which is located in the central Onikişubat district of Kahramanmaraş and is the second largest tent city, was examined. As a result of the examination, it was concluded that the tent city did not comply with national and international standards. Based on the findings and results of this study, it is recommended that disaster plans are revised and training programs organized for practitioners in order to prevent similar mistakes in future disasters. One of the important effects of global warming is the use of fossil fuels. Disadvantaged individuals may be affected by fossil fuel use more than others. In this study, the Kepez district of Antalya province, where the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) is high, was selected as the study area. Five-year (2019–2023) NO2, SO2, and CO concentrations were extracted from the Sentinel-5P TROPOMI satellite with open-source code. These values were combined and compared with Land Use Land Cover (LULC) land classes obtained from the Sentinel-2 satellite. The same process was performed for Land Surface Temperature (LST) obtained from MODIS Terra and Aqua satellites, and interpretation was made according to the LST-LULC map and surface temperature. The integrated SVI was calculated with population, age, education, and gender data from the Turkish Statistical Institute and NO2, SO2, and CO concentrations from the Sentinel-5P TROPOMI satellite. It was mapped on a neighborhood basis with zonal statistics. Accordingly, 20.6% of the neighborhoods in Kepez were categorized as very high risk, and 16.2% were categorized as high risk. Integrated SVI with the determination made by evaluating only air pollution gave different neighborhood results. This revealed the importance of using the SVI in disaster risk assessments. This study has the potential to shed light on the social vulnerability-supported disaster risk information system that is likely to be created in the following years. Full article

Two large earthquakes with a series of aftershocks struck southeastern Türkiye within 9 h and had catastrophic consequences. Following the earthquake doublet, 11 provinces corresponding to approximately 1/7 of Türkiye were declared disaster zones. Even though the epicenters of the first event and second mainshocks were in Pazarcik and Elbistan with a magnitude (Mw) of 7.7 and 7.6 with over 500 km of multiple-fault ruptures, Hatay province was the most heavily damaged province and had the highest number of casualties and collapsed buildings. A densely deployed strong ground motion array of the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency of Turkey (AFAD) recorded the earthquake doublet of the two consequent mainshocks, including ground motions exhibiting near-fault features. A suite of recorded ground motions in Hatay province is incorporated to examine the destructiveness of ground motions on reinforced concrete Moment-Resisting Frame buildings and the effectiveness of seismic isolation technology to reduce the observed damage. Moreover, Turkish Seismic Design Code-2018 code provisions are elaborated to determine the characteristics of the investigated structures. Nonlinear response history analyses were conducted for 24 types of structures by following the design provisions. The inelastic hysteretic response features in the fixed-base and isolation systems are represented through an inelastic Single-Degree-of-Freedom Bouc–Wen hysteretic model. Extreme characteristics of near-fault ground motions on RC structures and seismically isolated systems resulted in excessive drift and displacement demands. Roof drifts of reinforced concrete Moment-Resisting-Frame buildings exceeded 4% roof drift in mid-rise buildings, compatible with the field observations in Antakya city center, where the displacement demand and ultimate base shear coefficient of seismically isolated structures considered in this study exceeded the elastic spectral coefficient values of the design spectrum in the proximity of fault ruptures. The COVID-19 pandemic profoundly disturbed preschool education in Turkey, necessitating a rapid shift to distance learning for over 1.5 million children. The Ministry of National Education has established programs such as the Educational Content Network in Turkey. Also, the Turkish Radio and Television Association has made the TRT Preschool Application available online to support ongoing distance learning for preschool children. Preschool education in rural parts of Turkey was deeply impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. While previous research has examined the challenges of distance education broadly, there is a limited exploration of preschool teachers’ experiences during the pandemic lockdown, particularly in rural contexts in Turkey. To ensure sustainability in preschool education during the pandemic lockdown period, this study aimed to examine the experiences of preschool teachers who participated in distance education in rural areas. A qualitative case study was conducted with 10 teachers working in schools located in rural areas with diverse geographical difficulties scattered within the province near the Black Sea to obtain insights into the experiences of preschool teachers during the pandemic. The maximum variation sampling was utilized to select preschool teachers educating children between 45 and 72 months. To promote and facilitate individuals’ participation in the research, the semi-structured interviews were conducted via videoconferencing due to the lockdown. The content analysis was used to discover the meaning of the data. The study revealed that while teachers adapted their teaching methods to prioritize children’s well-being, disparities in digital access and socio-emotional issues within families created significant barriers to learning. The challenges encountered significantly impacted the children’s development in multiple areas. This study emphasized the need for improved infrastructure, providing extensive teacher training, and implementing robust support mechanisms to ensure the comprehensive growth of children in all domains during potential disasters. More research should be conducted to improve teachers’ skills in applying effective teaching strategies in virtual environments. Full article

Remote sensing and computer vision technologies are increasingly leveraged for rapid post-disaster building damage assessment, becoming a crucial and practical approach. In this context, the accuracy of employing various AI models in pixel-level change detection methods is significantly dependent on the consistency between pre- and post-disaster building images, particularly regarding variations in resolution, viewing angle, and lighting conditions; in object-level feature recognition methods, the low richness of semantic details of damaged buildings in images leads to a poor detection accuracy. This paper proposes a novel method, OCD-BDA (Object-Level Change Detection for Post-Disaster Building Damage Assessment), as an alternative to pixel-level change detection and object-level feature recognition methods. Inspired by human cognitive processes, this method incorporates three key steps: an efficient sample acquisition for object localization, labeling via HGC (Hierarchical and Gaussian Clustering), and model training and prediction for classification. Furthermore, this study establishes a change detection dataset based on Google Earth imagery of regions in Hatay Province before and after the Turkish earthquake. This dataset is characterized by pixel inconsistency and significant differences in photographic angles and lighting conditions between pre- and post-disaster images, making it a valuable test dataset for other studies. As a result, in the experiments of comparative generalization capabilities, OCD-BDA demonstrated a significant improvement, achieving an accuracy of 71%, which is twice that of the second-ranking method. Moreover, OCD-BDA exhibits superior performance in tasks with small sample amounts and rapid training time. With only 1% of the training samples, it achieves a prediction accuracy exceeding that of traditional transfer learning methods with 60% of samples. Additionally, it completes assessments across a large disaster area (450 km²) with 93% accuracy in under 23 min. Full article

In the veterinary field, particularly in the poultry farming sector, Alphitobius diaperinus (Panzer, 1797) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) is a significant pest that causes economic losses and acts as a vector for various pathogens. This study is the first to evaluate the efficacy of the entomopathogenic nematode Steinernema feltiae Filipjev, 1934 against both the larval (fifth instar) and imago (adult) of A. diaperinus from various Turkish populations. The insects were collected from six poultry farms in the provinces of Balikesir, Bolu, Canakkale, Manisa, and Izmir in Türkiye, bred, and then tested at concentrations ranging from 25 to 200 infective juveniles (IJs) per milliliter. Mortality was monitored over a five-day period. The findings revealed that larvae were much more susceptible to S. feltiae nematodes compared to adults, with LC50 values of larvae ranging from 33.17 to 83.12 IJs/mL. The Manisa population was the most susceptible, while the Izmir population was the most resistant. These results suggest that S. feltiae could be an effective biological control agent for managing A. diaperinus in Turkish poultry farms, reducing the reliance on chemical insecticides. Full article

Background/Objectives: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is associated with an increased risk of obesity and disordered eating behaviors. This study compared weight status and eating behaviors among drug-naïve ADHD children, those on stimulant monotherapy, those on combined stimulant and antipsychotic treatment, and healthy controls. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 547 children aged 6–12 years from four Turkish provinces: 361 with ADHD (152 drug-naïve, 156 on stimulants, and 53 on combined therapy), and 186 healthy controls. Anthropometric measurements, psychiatric assessments, and eating behavior evaluations were conducted using standardized tools. Results: Drug-naïve ADHD children had the highest obesity rate (13.8%), while those on stimulant monotherapy had the lowest (4.5%) compared to controls. Combined treatment group obesity rates were similar to controls (7.5% vs. 8.6%). The drug-naïve and combined treatment groups showed increased food approach behavior and desire to drink, with the combined treatment group also showing increased emotional overeating. Conclusions: This study reveals a complex relationship between ADHD, its pharmacological management, and the risk of obesity. Stimulant monotherapy may mitigate the risk of obesity, while combined stimulant and antipsychotic treatment may lead to problematic eating behaviors. These findings emphasize the importance of monitoring weight status and eating behaviors in ADHD children, especially those receiving pharmacological interventions. Full article

Depending on the characteristics of the existing buildings, earthquakes can cause damage at different levels and have a significant impact on the environment. The structural damages after the earthquakes have shown the importance of analysing both the existing and the damaged buildings. In this study, the Turkish rapid seismic assessment method, which was used for the existing building stock before a possible earthquake, was applied to the damaged reinforced concrete (RC) buildings after the 6 February earthquakes in Kahramanmaraş (Türkiye). The building data were used as a result of field observations in the provinces of Adıyaman, Hatay, and Kahramanmaraş, where the greatest destruction was caused by these earthquakes. Five RC buildings from each province were considered. The rapid assessment method was applied to a total of 15 buildings with different levels of damage. For this purpose, pre-earthquake images of the buildings were obtained, and an earthquake performance score was obtained for each building, taking into account the sustained damage during the earthquake. The primary aim of this study is to show the effects of structural irregularities on earthquake behaviour and to demonstrate the applicability of the rapid assessment methods used before the earthquake. The results obtained clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of rapid evaluation methods for existing building stock. Structural analyses were also carried out in this study to address the fact that the height of the ground storey is higher than the other storeys, which is one of the factors leading to a soft storey. Many reinforced-concrete structures collapsed or were seriously damaged in the 7.7 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes that occurred in southern Türkiye on 6 February 2023. The recorded peak ground accelerations were quite high (2.2 g) and the recorded motions’ elastic acceleration response spectra were significantly greater than the elastic design spectra given by the most recent Turkish seismic design code. A total of 518,000 houses were heavily damaged or collapsed in the eleven cities affected by the earthquake. More than 53,000 people lost their lives and over 100,000 people were injured, the majority of these injurits caused by the collapse of reinforced concrete structures. Post-earthquake damage assessments are important in the context of applying sustainability principles to building design and construction. In this study, post-earthquake damage assesments and evaluations were made for the reinforced-concrete structures that were exposed to destruction or various structural damage in Hatay, Kahramanmaraş and Adıyaman, which where most affected after the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes. The RC building damage and failure mechanisms resulting from field observations were evaluated in detail from a broad performance-based structural and earthquake engineering perspective. Information about Kahramanmaraş earthquakes is given briefly. Design spectra and spectral accelerations were compared for the earthquake stations in these three provinces. Soft/weak story, short column, insufficiently reinforced-concrete, and poor workmanship are the primary causes of structural damage, which cause earthquake weaknesses in these buildings. Full article

Smartphone addiction (SA) is increasing worldwide. The aim of this study is to determine the level of SA in athletes affiliated to the Turkish Handball Federation in Izmir and to examine its relationship with factors such as sociodemographic status, health status, eating attitude, and body perception. This cross-sectional study was conducted in March–April 2021 in Izmir Province. The sample of the study consisted of 212 licensed handball athletes. The short SA scale, three-factor nutrition scale, and body perception scale were used. A chi-square test was used for bivariate comparisons and logistic regression analysis was used for multivariate comparisons. The study was completed with 202 individuals (the coverage rate was 95.3%). The prevalence of SA was found to be 27.7%. The risk of SA increased 2.49-fold (CI: 1.17–5.31, p = 0.018) in female participants, 2.01-fold (CI: 1.01–4.06, p = 0.048) in participants with alcohol use, 2.17-fold (CI: 1.04–4.58, p = 0.042) in participants with low nutritional scores, 2.65-fold (CI: 1.15–6.10, p = 0.022) in individuals with high-income status, and 2.66-fold (CI: 1.07–6.64, p = 0.036) in individuals with high body perception scale score. In total, 27.7% of the athlete sample had scores above the SA threshold. These results point out that a behavioral addiction such as SA can occur even in professionals of an activity such as sports, known for beneficial effects in terms of healthy life. Full article

In recent years, wind energy has become remarkably popular among renewable energy sources due to its low installation costs and easy maintenance. Having high energy potential is of great importance in the selection of regions where wind energy investments will be made. In this study, the wind power potential in Çanakkale Province, located in the northwest of Türkiye, is examined, and the wind speed is estimated using hourly and daily data over a one-year period. The data, including 12 different meteorological parameters, were taken from the Turkish State Meteorological Service. The two-parameter Weibull and Rayleigh distributions, which are the most widely preferred models in wind energy studies, are employed to estimate the wind power potential using hourly wind speed data. The graphical method is implemented to calculate the shape (k) and scale (c) parameters of the Weibull distribution function. Daily average wind speed estimation is performed with artificial neural network–genetic algorithm (ANN-GA) and ANN–particle swarm optimization (ANN-PSO) hybrid approaches. The proposed hybrid ANN-GA and ANN-PSO algorithms provide correlation coefficient values of 0.94839 and 0.94042, respectively, indicating that the predicted and measured wind speed values are notably close. Statistical error indices reveal that the ANN-GA model outperforms the ANN-PSO model. Full article
