Ruminant livestock production plays a crucial role in the agricultural systems of Sub-Saharan Africa, significantly supporting rural livelihoods through income generation, improved nutrition, and employment opportunities. Despite its importance, the sector continues to face substantial challenges, such as low feed quality, seasonal feed shortages, and climate-related stresses, all of which limit productivity and sustainability. Considering these challenges, the adoption of natural feed additives has emerged as a promising strategy to enhance animal performance, optimise nutrient utilisation, and mitigate environmental impacts, including the reduction of enteric methane emissions. This review underscores the significant potential of natural feed additives such as plant extracts, essential oils, probiotics, and mineral-based supplements such as fossil shell flour as sustainable alternatives to conventional growth promoters in ruminant production systems across the region. All available documented evidence on the topic from 2000 to 2024 was collated and synthesised through standardised methods of systematic review protocol—PRISMA. Out of 319 research papers downloaded, six were included and analysed directly or indirectly in this study. The results show that the addition of feed additives to ruminant diets in all the studies reviewed significantly (p < 0.05) improved growth parameters such as average daily growth (ADG), feed intake, and feed conversion ratio (FCR) compared to the control group. However, no significant (p > 0.05) effect was found on cold carcass weight (CCW), meat percentage, fat percentage, bone percentage, or intramuscular fat (IMF%) compared to the control. The available evidence indicates that these additives can provide tangible benefits, including improved growth performance, better feed efficiency, enhanced immune responses, and superior meat quality, while also supporting environmental sustainability by reducing nitrogen excretion and decreasing dependence on antimicrobial agents. In order to fulfil SDG 13—taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impact—SDG 2—ending hunger and poverty—and the African Union CAADP Strategy and Action Plan: 2026–2035, which’s goal is ending hunger and intensifying sustainable food production, agro-industrialisation, and trade, the resilience of commercial livestock farmers to agricultural droughts needs to be enhanced. Agricultural drought has affected the economies of many sub-Saharan African countries, including South Africa, and still poses a challenge to commercial livestock farming. This study identifies and determines the factors affecting commercial livestock farmers’ level of resilience to agricultural drought. Primary data from 123 commercial livestock farmers was used in a principal component analysis to estimate the agricultural drought resilience index as an outcome variable, and the probit model was used to determine the factors influencing the resilience of commercial livestock farmers in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. This study provides a valuable contribution towards resilience-building strategies that are critical for sustaining commercial livestock farming in arid regions by developing a formula for calculating the Agricultural Drought Resilience Index for commercial livestock farmers, significantly contributing to the pool of knowledge. The results showed that 67% of commercial livestock farming households were not resilient to agricultural drought, while 33% were resilient. Reliance on sustainable natural water resources, participation in social networks, education, relative support, increasing livestock numbers, and income stability influence the resilience of commercial livestock farmers. It underscores the importance of multidimensional policy interventions to enhance farmer drought resilience through education and livelihood diversification. Full article

This paper examines how demographic characteristics, institutional structures, and livelihood strategies shape household resilience to climate variability and drought in West Pokot County, one of Kenya’s most climate-vulnerable arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs). Using a mixed-methods approach, it combines household survey data with three statistical techniques: Multinomial Logistic Regression (MLR) assesses the influence of gender, age, and education on livestock ownership and livelihood choices; Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) reveals patterns in institutional access and adaptive practices; and Stepwise Linear Regression (SLR) quantifies the relationship between resilience strategies and agricultural productivity. Findings show that demographic factors, particularly gender and education, along with access to veterinary services, drought-tolerant inputs, and community-based organizations, significantly shape resilience. However, trade-offs exist: strategies improving livestock productivity may reduce crop yields due to resource and labor competition. This study recommends targeted interventions, including gender-responsive extension services, integration of indigenous and scientific knowledge, improved infrastructure, and participatory governance. These measures are vital for strengthening resilience not only in West Pokot but also in other drought-prone ASAL regions across sub-Saharan Africa. Full article

Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is experiencing escalating climate variability, land degradation, and food insecurity, which threaten livelihoods and economic stability. Sustainable agricultural practices (SAPs), including climate-smart agriculture, conservation agriculture, and agroecology, offer promising strategies to boost productivity while enhancing ecological stability. This review proposes that multidisciplinary integration of SAPs, encompassing agronomy, socioeconomics, and governance, is the most promising route to achieving climate-resilient food systems in SSA by 2030. Despite its proven benefits, the use of SAPs remains limited. This is largely because of financial constraints, weak institutional frameworks, and inadequate infrastructure. To address these challenges, this review evaluates the role of SAPs in mitigating climate risk, improving soil health, and enhancing food security. It also identifies systemic adoption barriers and examines the effectiveness of policy and financing frameworks. Drawing on evidence from across SSA, including Ethiopia’s agroforestry success and Senegal’s millet resilience, this review highlights how integrating sustainable practices with postharvest innovation and community-driven approaches can strengthen food systems. Ultimately, the findings underscore that weaving science, policy, and grassroots action is essential for building a resilient and food-secure SSA, particularly within the context of the 2025 global adaptation agenda. Increasing global population and threat from climate change are imposing economic, social, and ecological challenges to global food production. The demand for food is increasing, necessitating enhanced agricultural production with minimal environmental impacts. To meet this demand, sustainable intensification of both crops and livestock is necessary. This is more urgent in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), a region characterized by low productivity and environmentally degrading agriculture. Integrated Agriculture-livestock-forestry (ALF) systems could be a key form of intensification needed for achieving food security and economic and environmental sustainability. The synergetic interactions between ALF nexus provide a mechanism to foster interconnectedness and resource circulation where practices of one system influence the outcomes in another. These systems enhance long-term farm sustainability while serving the farmers’ environmental and economic goals. It provides opportunities for improving food security, farmer incomes, soil health, climate resilience and the achievement of several UN Sustainable Development Goals. It is therefore crucial to strengthen the evidence supporting the contribution of these systems. On this basis, this paper reviews the potential pathways through which ALF nexus can enhance incomes, food security and climate change mitigation in SSA. The paper discusses the pathways through which the integration of crops, livestock and trees enhance (i) food security, (ii) incomes, (iii) soil health and (iv) mitigation of climate change in SSA. We argue that implementing ALF systems will be accompanied by an advancement of enhanced food security, farmer livelihoods and ecological conservation. It will foster a more balanced and sustainable sub-Saharan African agricultural systems. Full article

A majority of households in sub-Saharan Africa use inefficient biomass stoves in poorly ventilated kitchens, leading to indoor air pollution. Biomass for cooking can be sustainably sourced from agricultural residues such as prunings from agroforestry. This study assessed biochar-producing gasifier cookstove performance among 150 households in Embu, Kwale, and Siaya Counties through household surveys and participatory cooking tests with 75 households. With the gasifier, carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations were lower in Embu (5.1 ppm), while carbon dioxide (CO2) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) were lower in Kwale, at 588 ppm and 136 μg/m3, respectively. Compared to the three-stone open fire, reductions in CO and PM2.5 concentrations were highest in Embu, at 82% and 97%, respectively. The biomass-to-char conversion efficiency with the gasifier was 17–18%. If households consider the produced char as a soil amendment, they could save 24–43% of fuel compared to the three-stone open fire; if the char is seen as fuel, the potential savings are 42–65%. Significant differences between the three sites were observed with the gasifier for gross and net fuel use, and for concentrations of PM2.5 and CO2. Gasifier uptake can reduce the need for fuel collection and indoor air pollution, with a positive impact on both the environment and human wellbeing. Full article

The intensive use of nitrogen (N) fertilizers in maize (Zea mays L.) cropping in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) contributes significantly to nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. Due to limited data on emissions and emission factors (EFs) in SSA, this study investigates GHG emissions and proposes EFs under different fertilization regimes in maize cropping in Burkina Faso (West Africa). A randomized complete block design was used with five treatments: (i) control: no fertilizer (CK), (ii) cattle manure (M), (iii) chemical fertilizer (NPK), (iv) a combination of chemical fertilizer and cattle manure (NPKM) at the national recommended rate, and (v) farmers’ practices, which involve chemical fertilizer combined with manure at the farmers’ rate (NPKM+). Cumulative N2O emissions varied significantly among treatments (p < 0.05), with the highest under NPKM (2.86 kg N2O-N ha−1) and the lowest under CK (1.93 ± 0.11 kg N2O-N ha−1). NPKM also showed the highest methane (CH4) uptake (−0.62 kg CH4-C ha−1; p < 0.001), while CK exhibited an increasing trend (0.74 kg CH4-C ha−1). The highest N2O EF was recorded for NPK (0.37 ± 0.05%), 63% lower than the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change default value. Although NPKM treatment resulted in the highest global warming potential and maize yield, it also achieved the lowest greenhouse gas intensity per unit of yield, highlighting a more efficient trade-off between productivity and climate impact with nitrogen fertilizer use. NPKM+ was the most effective in maintaining high maize productivity with lower yield-scaled N2O emissions and GHG intensity. These findings suggest that an integrated approach combining organic and inorganic fertilizers can mitigate soil GHG emissions. Further research is needed to refine climate-smart fertilizer combinations for sustainable maize production in SSA. Full article

The COVID-19 pandemic intensified existing structural challenges in Africa, including poverty, weak healthcare systems, and fragile agricultural supply chains. Consequently, examining its effects remains a critical area of study. This research investigates the effect of food prices on the prevalence of malnutrition in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic in sub-Saharan Africa. The findings indicate a significant long-term relationship between the number of COVID-19 cases, food prices, and the prevalence of undernourishment. Specifically, increases in food prices are associated with a rise in undernourishment rates over the long term. These results are corroborated by estimations using Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS). To mitigate malnutrition in the face of potential future health shocks, governments could create and operationalize food price stabilization funds to cushion against sharp increases in food prices. These funds can be used to subsidize key staples during periods of price volatility, ensuring affordability for vulnerable populations. Full article

Climate change and variability are characterized by unpredictable and extreme weather events. They adversely impact the highly susceptible smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa, who heavily rely on rain-fed agriculture. Climate smart agriculture (CSA) practices have been extensively promoted as offering long-term solutions to changing climate conditions, while enhancing the productivity and sustainability of African agricultural systems. Despite this, the adoption rate remains low among smallholder farmers. Understanding the factors that influence adoption of these practices among this key farming community is therefore necessary to increase their adoption. In this paper, we review and summarize findings from existing studies on the factors that influence the adoption of CSA practices by smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa. Our review reveals that land tenure security, access to information and extension services, and affiliation to group membership positively influence adoption. On the other hand, gender, risk perception, and off-farm income had conflicting effects by reporting both positive and negative influences on CSA adoption. We conclude that CSA adoption options are local-specific, and their development and implementation should emphasize locally tailored knowledge, skills, and resources. Full article

Reducing the use of chemical inputs (fertilizers, pesticides) in agriculture while maintaining crop productivity is the main challenge facing sub-Saharan African family farming systems. The use of effective microorganisms (EM) is among the various innovative approaches for minimizing chemical inputs and the environmental impact of agricultural production and protecting soil health while enhancing crop yields and improving food security. This study sought to characterize the microbial biodiversity of local beneficial microorganisms (BMs) products from locally fermented forest litter and investigate their ability to enhance tomato plant growth and development. Beneficial microorganisms (BMs) were obtained by anaerobic fermentation of forest litter collected in four agroecological regions of Senegal mixed with sugarcane molasses and various types of carbon sources (groundnut shells, millet stovers, and rice bran in different proportions). The microbial community composition was analyzed using next-generation rDNA sequencing, and their effects on tomato growth traits were tested in greenhouse experiments. Results show that regardless of the litter geographical collection site, the dominant bacterial taxa in the BMs belonged to the phyla Firmicutes (27.75–97.06%) and Proteobacteria (2.93–72.24%). Within these groups, the most prevalent classes were Bacilli (14.41–89.82%), α-proteobacteria (2.83–72.09%), and Clostridia (0.024–13.34%). Key genera included Lactobacillus (13–65.83%), Acetobacter (8.91–72.09%), Sporolactobacillus (1.40–43.35%), and Clostridium (0.08–13.34%). Fungal taxa were dominated by the classes Leotiomycetes and Sordariomycetes, with a prevalence of the acidophilic genus Acidea. Although microbial diversity is relatively uniform across samples, the relative abundance of microbial taxa is influenced by the litter’s origin. This is illustrated by the PCoA analysis, which clusters microbial communities based on their litter source. Greenhouse experiments revealed that five BMs (DK-M, DK-G, DK-GM, NB-R, and NB-M) significantly (p < 0.05) enhanced tomato growth traits, including plant height (+10.75% for DK-G and +9.44% for NB-R), root length (+56.84–62.20%), root volume (+84.32–97.35%), root surface area (+53.16–56.72%), and both fresh and dry shoot biomass when compared to untreated controls. This study revealed that forest-fermented litter products (BMs), produced using litter collected from various regions in Senegal, contain beneficial microorganisms known as plant growth-promoting microorganisms (PGPMs), which enhanced tomato growth. These findings highlight the potential of locally produced BMs as an agroecological alternative to inorganic inputs, particularly within Senegal’s family farming systems. Full article

Climate change poses significant challenges to smallholder farmers, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, where agriculture is highly vulnerable to changing climatic conditions. This study examines the socioeconomic determinants influencing the adoption of strategies for adapting to climate change among smallholder farmers in Mbombela, South Africa. A quantitative research approach was employed, using structured questionnaires to collect data from 308 randomly selected smallholder farmers. Furthermore, the study utilised binary logistic regression to analyse the relationship between socioeconomic factors and the adoption of adaptation strategies. The results revealed that gender, age, income sources, access to climate information, and cooperative membership significantly influenced farmers’ adoption of adaptation strategies. Findings further showed that female farmers, older farmers, and those relying solely on farming income were less likely to adopt adaptation strategies, while younger farmers and those with diversified income sources were more likely to embrace adaptation strategies. Moreover, the study found that access to climate information and cooperative membership were negatively associated with the adoption of adaptation strategies. This negative association may be attributed to inefficiencies in current information dissemination, where climate-related information may not be tailored to the specific needs of farmers, or to cooperative structures that may not effectively facilitate knowledge sharing or collective action. The study concludes that targeted interventions, such as gender-sensitive policies, livelihood diversification, improved extension services, and strengthened cooperative structures, are essential to enhance smallholder farmers’ adaptive capacity. Agriculture remains the backbone and major source of livelihood for men and women in most parts of sub-Saharan Africa. However, the gender-differentiated roles in agricultural transformation as a coping strategy to climate change in this context still beg for empirical substantiation. Using the Santchou Landscape of Cameroon as a case, this study sought to (a) examine the effects of climate change on agricultural practices, (b) characterize gender-differentiation in agro-based climate adaptation interventions, and (c) explore the gender-based challenges to agro-based climate adaptation planning. A representative sample of 159 households was conducted in five communities in the study area, complemented by key informant interviews (N = 5). The data collected were analyzed descriptively. The findings of this study revealed the following conclusions: Firstly, climate change significantly affects agricultural practices in the Santchou Landscape as mirrored in faming season fluctuation as well as the alteration of the farming calendar. Secondly, men and women play differentiated roles in agro-based climate adaptation, especially through farming practices such as the introduction of drought-resistant crops, the the practice of intercropping and agroforestry. Thirdly, gender-based challenges to agro-based climate adaptation include unequal access to land between men and women and unequal access to farm inputs, agricultural training, and technology. This study provides empirical evidence to substantiate the theoretical position on gender-differentiated roles in agro-based climate adaptation. Further studies are required to establish the incidence of gender variations in agro-based climate adaptation on livelihoods. Full article

Environmental Risk Factors Contributing to the Spread of Antibiotic Resistance in West Africa

Antibiotic resistance is a well-documented global health challenge that disproportionately impacts low- and middle-income countries. In 2019, the number of deaths attributed to and associated with antibiotic resistance in Western Sub-Saharan Africa was approximately 27 and 115 per 100,000, respectively, higher than in other regions worldwide. Extensive research has consistently confirmed the persistent presence and spread of antibiotic resistance in hospitals, among livestock, within food supply chains, and across various environmental contexts. This review documents the environmental risk factors contributing to the spread of antibiotic resistance in West Africa. We collected studies from multiple West African countries using the Web of Science and PubMed databases. We screened them for factors associated with antibiotic-resistant bacteria and resistance genes between 2018 and 2024. Our findings indicate that antibiotic resistance remains a significant concern in West Africa, with environmental pollution and waste management identified as major factors in the proliferation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and resistance genes between 2018 and 2024. Additional contributing factors include poor hygiene, the use of antibiotics in agriculture, aquaculture, and animal farming, and the transmission of antibiotic resistance within hospital settings. Unfortunately, the lack of comprehensive genetic characterization of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and resistance genes hinders a thorough understanding of this critical issue in the region. Since antibiotic resistance transcends national borders and can spread within and between countries, it is essential to understand the environmental risk factors driving its dissemination in West African countries. Such understanding will be instrumental in developing and recommending effective strategies nationally and internationally to combat antibiotic resistance. Full article

Aethina tumida, commonly known as the small hive beetle, poses a threat to honeybee populations, particularly Apis mellifera, across several European regions. Originating in sub-Saharan Africa, there is a risk of the infestation spreading from Calabria, a region in the south of Italy. The essential role played by Apis spp. in pollination biodiversity preservation, agricultural productivity, and the overall economy is related to the dangers posed by the invasion of Aethina tumida. Current detection methods often fail to identify infestations early, leading to significant colony losses. We focused on creating a biosensor to improve the detection of Kodamaea ohmeri, a recently identified yeast that coexists symbiotically with Aethina tumida. The biosensor was designed to exploit the highly sensitive quartz crystal microbalance to identify a specific peptide linked to Kodamaea ohmeri in honey specimens. Its gold-plated surface over quartz was functionalized with an antibody effective in recognizing the peptide associated with Kodamaea ohmeri, a potential warning for detecting Aethina tumida. Preliminary results support the possibility of using such biosensor technology to detect infestation and enhance colony management techniques for honeybees, enabling beekeepers to implement prompt and focused treatments. In addition, reducing the size and cost of these biosensors and offering user training would be very helpful in having them used in beekeeping. Full article

Childhood Anemia in Mozambique: A Multilevel Mixed-Effects Analysis of 2011–2022/23 Population-Based Surveys

Background/Objectives: Anemia adversely affects children’s cognitive and motor development and remains a global public health problem. This study aimed to identify the individual, feeding, household, and community determinants of anemia among children in Mozambique. Methods: We used pooled datasets of two Mozambique representative population-based surveys: the 2011 and 2022–2023 Demographic and Health Surveys. A total sample of 8143 children aged 6–59 months with available hemoglobin testing was included. Multilevel mixed-effects analysis was performed using STATA (18.0). Results: Over a decade, the prevalence of anemia in children aged 6–59 months remained high, increasing slightly from 69.1% in 2011 to 72.9% in 2022. Children aged 6–11 months were less likely to have anemia than children from other age groups (aOR = 0.77, 95% CI = 0.62–0.96). Children who suffered from illnesses (aOR = 1.44, 95% CI = 1.18–1.75), received vitamin A supplements (aOR = 0.76, 95% CI = 0.63–0.93), lived in female-headed households (aOR = 1.16, 95% CI = 1.01–1.32), and who lived in households with unimproved drinking water sources (aOR = 1.40, 95% CI = 1.19–1.65) were more likely to have anemia than their peers. Overall, 16% of the variability in anemia prevalence was attributed to differences between clusters (ICC = 0.16). Conclusions: Childhood anemia remains a critical public health challenge in Mozambique, with prevalence rates exceeding the average for sub-Saharan Africa. Multisectoral approaches to enhance essential supplies’ provision and the primary healthcare monitoring of children at risk favored more investments in rural development and sustainable agriculture, water sanitation, and social care and gender-sensitive work policies that can help tackle childhood anemia.
