The abrasion resistance of fabrics is one of the basic properties determining the utility performance and durability. The abrasion resistance of textile materials is measured using the Martindale device according to appropriate standards. The sample breakage method is the most commonly used of the three methods. The method is based on organoleptic assessment of fabric breakage. The method is time-consuming, and results may be subject to error resulting from the subjective nature of the assessment. The aim of the presented work was to check the possibility of the application of contactless 3D surface geometry measurement using an optical profilometer in an assessment of changes in fabrics’ surface due to the abrasion process. The obtained results confirmed that some parameters of the geometric structure of fabric surfaces, such as the highest height of the roughness profile Rz, the height of the highest pick of the roughness profile Rp, the depth of the lowest valley of the roughness profile Rv, the depth of the total height of the roughness profile Rt, and the kurtosis Rku, can be used to assess the abrasion resistance of fabrics. It is also stated that using the non-contact optical measurement of fabric surface geometry allows for an assessment of the directionality of surface texture. Predictors and Outcomes of Right Ventricular Dysfunction in Patients Admitted to the Medical Intensive Care Unit for Sepsis—A Retrospective Cohort Study

Background: Right ventricular (RV) dysfunction is associated with poor clinical outcomes in critically ill sepsis patients, but its pathophysiology and predictors are incompletely characterized. We aimed to investigate the predictors of RV dysfunction and its outcomes in sepsis patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Methods: This is a single-center retrospective cohort study of adult patients admitted to the ICU for sepsis who had echocardiography within 72 h of diagnosis. Patients with acute coronary syndrome, acute decompensated heart failure, or significant valvular dysfunction were excluded. RV dysfunction was defined as the presence of RV dilation, hypokinesis, or both. Demographics and clinical outcomes were obtained from electronic medical records. Results: A total of 361 patients were included in our study—47 with and 314 without RV dysfunction. The mean age of the population was 66.8 years and 54.6% were females. Compared to those without RV dysfunction, patients with RV dysfunction were more likely to require mechanical ventilation (63.8% vs. 43.9%, p = 0.01) and vasopressor support (61.7% vs. 36.6%, p < 0.01). On multivariate logistic regression analysis, increasing age (OR 1.03, 95% C.I. 1.00–1.06), a history of HIV infection (OR 5.88, 95% C.I. 1.57–22.11) and atrial fibrillation (OR 4.34, 95% C.I. 1.83–10.29), and presence of LV systolic dysfunction (OR 14.40, 95% C.I. 5.63–36.84) were independently associated with RV dysfunction. Patients with RV dysfunction had significantly worse 30-day survival (Log-Rank p = 0.023). On multivariate Cox regression analysis, older age (HR 1.02, 95% C.I. 1.00–1.04) and peak lactate (HR 1.16, 95% C.I. 1.11–1.21) were independent predictors of 30-day mortality. Conclusions: Among other findings, our data suggests a possible association between a history of HIV infection and RV dysfunction in critically ill sepsis patients, and this should be investigated further in future studies. Patients with evidence of RV dysfunction had poorer survival in this population; however this was not an independent predictor of mortality in the multivariate analysis. A larger cohort with a longer follow-up period may provide further insights. Full article

Recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus (rVSV) is a promising viral vaccine vector for addressing the COVID-19 pandemic. Inducing mucosal immunity via the intranasal route is an ideal strategy for rVSV-based vaccines, but it requires extremely stringent safety standards. In this study, we constructed two rVSV variants with amino acid mutations in their M protein: rVSV-M2 with M33A/M51R mutations and rVSV-M4 with M33A/M51R/V221F/S226R mutations, and developed COVID-19 vaccines based on these attenuated vectors. By comparing viral replication capacity, intranasal immunization, intracranial injection, and blood cell counts, we demonstrated that the M protein mutation variants exhibit significant attenuation effects both in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, preliminary investigations into the mechanisms of virus attenuation revealed that these attenuated viruses can induce a stronger type I interferon response while reducing inflammation compared to the wild-type rVSV. We developed three candidate vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 using the wildtype VSV backbone with either wild-type M (rVSV-JN.1) and two M mutant variants (rVSV-M2-JN.1 and rVSV-M4-JN.1). Our results confirmed that rVSV-M2-JN.1 and rVSV-M4-JN.1 retain strong immunogenicity while enhancing safety in hamsters. In summary, the rVSV variants with M protein mutations represent promising candidate vectors for mucosal vaccines and warrant further investigation. Full article

Background/Objectives: While aldosterone excess has a detrimental impact on the left ventricle, no data exist concerning right ventricular (RV) function in primary aldosteronism (PA) patients. We aimed to assess RV structure and function in patients with PA using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. Methods: Thirty PA patients and 30 age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers were studied. All patients underwent cardiac magnetic resonance with the assessment of RV structure and function. Results: Neither the RV mass index (RVMi) nor the RV ejection fraction (RVEF) correlated with the aldosterone levels (p = 0.36 and p = 0.37, respectively). On the contrary, we found a weak positive correlation between the RV end-diastolic volume index (RVEDVi) and aldosterone concentration (rho = 0.5, p = 0.005). Neither the RVEDVi nor the RVEF differed between the PA patients and the control group (p = 0.077 and p = 0.93, respectively). The RVMi was higher in the PA group, at 18.9 (4.9) g/m2, versus 13.6 (3.2) g/m2 (SD) in the control group (p < 0.0001). The RVEDVi was positively correlated with the duration of hypertension (rho = 0.4, p = 0.03), and the latter was correlated inversely with the RVEF (rho = −0.47, p = 0.009). The RV global longitudinal strain was impaired in PA patients in comparison with the controls (−16.8 (2.5%) versus −19.6 (2.7%), p = 0.0001). Conclusions: The PA patients exhibited larger RVMi values than the controls. The higher the aldosterone levels were, the higher the observed RVEDVi. Additionally, the longer the duration of hypertension, the higher the observed RVEDVi and the lower the noted RVEF. The PA patients exhibited subclinical RV systolic dysfunction, expressed as impaired RV global longitudinal strain. Full article

Porcine Rotavirus (PoRV), a predominant causative agent of neonatal diarrhea in piglets, shares substantial genetic homology with human rotavirus and represents a considerable threat to both public health and the global swine industry in the absence of specific antiviral interventions. The VP6 protein, an internal capsid component, is characterized by exceptional sequence conservation and robust immunogenicity, rendering it an ideal candidate for viral genotyping and vaccine development. In the present study, the recombinant plasmid pET28a(+)-VP6 was engineered to facilitate the high-yield expression and purification of the VP6 antigen. BALB/c mice were immunized to generate monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) through hybridoma technology, and the antigenic specificity of the resulting mAbs was stringently validated. Subsequently, a panel of truncated protein constructs was designed to precisely map linear B-cell epitopes, followed by comparative conservation analysis across diverse PoRV strains. Functional validation demonstrated that all three mAbs exhibited high-affinity binding to VP6, with a peak detection titer of 1:3,000,000 and exclusive specificity toward PoRVA. These antibodies effectively recognized representative genotypes such as G3 and X1, while exhibiting no cross-reactivity with unrelated viral pathogens; however, their reactivity against other PoRV serogroups (e.g., types B and C) remains to be further elucidated. Epitope mapping identified two novel linear B-cell epitopes, 128YIKNWNLQNR137 and 138RQRTGFVFHK147, both displaying strong sequence conservation among circulating PoRV strains. Collectively, these findings provide a rigorous experimental framework for the functional dissection of VP6 and reinforce its potential as a valuable diagnostic and immunoprophylactic target in PoRV control strategies. In this paper, we propose examining Heterogeneous Autoregressive (HAR) models using five different estimation techniques and four different estimation horizons to decide which performs better in terms of forecasting accuracy. Several different estimators are used to determine the coefficients of three selected HAR-type models. Furthermore, model lags, calculated using 5 min intraday data from the Standard & Poor’s 500 (SPX) index and the Chicago Board Options Exchange Volatility (VIX) index as the sole exogenous variable, enrich the models. For comparison and evaluation of the experimental results, we use three metrics: Quasi-Likelihood (QLIKE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), and Mean Squared Error (MSE). An empirical study reveals that the Entropy Loss Function consistently achieves the best QLIKE results in all the horizons, especially in the weekly horizon. On the other hand, the performance of the Robust Linear Model implies that it can provide an alternative to the Entropy Loss Function when considering the results of the MAE and MSE metrics. Moreover, research shows that adding more informative lags, such as Realized Quarticity for the Heterogeneous Autoregressive model yielding the Realized Quarticity (HARQ) model, and incorporating the VIX index further improve the general results of the models. The results of the proposed Entropy Loss Function and Robust Linear Model suggest that they successfully achieve significant forecasting accuracy for HAR models across multiple forecasting horizons. Background/Objectives: Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is frequently complicated by pulmonary hypertension (PH), which is associated with reduced exercise capacity and poor prognosis. Early and accurate non-invasive detection of PH remains a clinical challenge. This study evaluated whether combining quantitative CT analysis of lung fibrosis with cardiac MRI-derived measures of right ventricular (RV) function improves the diagnostic accuracy of PH in patients with ILD. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 72 ILD patients who underwent chest CT, cardiac MRI, and right heart catheterization (RHC). Lung fibrosis was quantified using a Gaussian Histogram Normalized Correlation (GHNC) software that computed the proportions of diseased lung, ground-glass opacity (GGO), honeycombing, reticulation, consolidation, and emphysema. MRI was used to assess RV end-systolic volume (RVESV), ejection fraction, and RV longitudinal strain. PH was defined as a mean pulmonary arterial pressure (mPAP) ≥ 20 mmHg and pulmonary vascular resistance ≥ 3 Wood units on RHC. Results: Compared to patients without PH, those with PH (n = 21) showed significantly reduced RV strain (−13.4 ± 5.1% vs. −16.4 ± 5.2%, p = 0.026) and elevated RVESV (74.2 ± 18.3 mL vs. 59.5 ± 14.2 mL, p = 0.003). CT-derived indices also differed significantly: diseased lung area (56.4 ± 17.2% vs. 38.4 ± 12.5%, p < 0.001), GGO (11.8 ± 3.6% vs. 8.65 ± 4.3%, p = 0.005), and honeycombing (17.7 ± 4.9% vs. 12.8 ± 6.4%, p = 0.0027) were all more prominent in the PH group. In receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, diseased lung area demonstrated an area under the curve of 0.778 for detecting PH. This increased to 0.847 with the addition of RVESV, and further to 0.854 when RV strain was included. Combined models showed significant improvement in risk reclassification: net reclassification improvement was 0.700 (p = 0.002) with RVESV and 0.684 (p = 0.004) with RV strain; corresponding IDI values were 0.0887 (p = 0.03) and 0.1222 (p = 0.01), respectively. Conclusions: Combining CT-based fibrosis quantification with cardiac MRI-derived RV functional assessment enhances the non-invasive diagnosis of PH in ILD patients. This integrated imaging approach significantly improves diagnostic precision and may facilitate earlier, more targeted interventions in the management of ILD-associated PH. Full article

Bio-based polyurethane asphalt binder (PUAB) derived from castor oil (CO) is environmentally friendly and exhibits extended allowable construction time. However, CO imparts inherently poor mechanical performance to bio-based PUAB. To address this limitation, attapulgite (ATT) with fibrous nanostructures was incorporated. The effects of ATT on bio-based PUAB were systematically investigated, including cure kinetics, rotational viscosity (RV) evolution, phase-separation microstructures, dynamic mechanical properties, thermal stability, and mechanical performance. Experimental characterization employed Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Brookfield viscometry, laser scanning confocal microscopy, dynamic mechanical analysis, thermogravimetry, and tensile testing. ATT incorporation accelerated the polyaddition reaction conversion between isocyanate groups in polyurethane (PU) and hydroxyl groups in ATT. Paradoxically, it reduced RV during curing, prolonging allowable construction time proportionally with clay content. Additionally, ATT’s compatibilizing effect decreased bitumen particle size in PUAB, with scaling proportionally with clay loading. While enhancing thermal stability, ATT lowered the glass transition temperature and damping properties. Crucially, 1 wt% ATT increased tensile strength by 71% and toughness by 62%, while maintaining high elongation at break (>400%). The cost-effectiveness and significant reinforcement capability of ATT make it a promising candidate for producing high-performance bio-based PUAB composites. Full article

Linkages Between Sorghum bicolor Root System Architectural Traits and Grain Yield Performance Under Combined Drought and Heat Stress Conditions

Breeding programs often overlook the use of root traits. Therefore, we investigated the relevance of sorghum root traits in explaining its adaptation to combined drought and heat stress (CDHS). Six (i.e., three pre-release lines + three checks) sorghum genotypes were established at two low-altitude (i.e., <600 masl) locations with a long-term history of averagely very high temperatures in the beginning of the summer season, under two management (i.e., CDHS and well-watered (WW)) regimes. At each location, the genotypes were laid out in the field using a randomized complete block design (RCBD) replicated two times. Root trait data, namely root diameter (RD), number of roots (NR), number of root tips (NRT), total root length (TRL), root depth (RDP), root width (RW), width–depth ratio (WDR), root network area (RNA), root solidity (RS), lower root area (LRA), root perimeter (RP), root volume (RV), surface area (SA), root holes (RH) and root angle (RA) were gathered using the RhizoVision Explorer software during the pre- and post-flowering stage of growth. RSA traits differentially showed significant (p < 0.05) correlations with grain yield (GY) at pre- and post-flowering growth stages and under CDHS and WW conditions also revealing genotypic variation estimates exceeding 50% for all the traits. Regression models varied between pre-flowering (p = 0.013, R2 = 47.15%, R2 Predicted = 29.32%) and post-flowering (p = 0.000, R2 = 85.64%, R2 Predicted = 73.30%) growth stages, indicating post-flowering as the optimal stage to relate root traits to yield performance. RD contributed most to the regression model at post-flowering, explaining 51.79% of the 85.64% total variation. The Smith–Hazel index identified ICSV111IN and ASAREACA12-3-1 as superior pre-release lines, suitable for commercialization as new varieties. The study demonstrated that root traits (in particular, RD, RW, and RP) are linked to crop performance under CDHS conditions and should be incorporated in breeding programs. This approach may accelerate genetic gains not only in sorghum breeding programs, but for other crops, while offering a nature-based breeding strategy for stress adaptation in crops. Full article

Respiratory pathogens are significant causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Since the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 in 2019 and the mitigation measures implemented to control the pandemic, other respiratory viruses’ transmission and circulation patterns were substantially disrupted. We leveraged the influenza hospitalization surveillance in Tanzania to understand the distribution of respiratory viruses shortly after nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) were lifted. A total of 475 samples that tested negative for SARS-CoV-2 and influenza from March through May 2022 were included in this study. The samples were tested for 16 virus targets using Anyplex II RV16 multiplex assays. The findings indicate that most hospitalizations (74%) were among children under 15 years, with human bocavirus (HBoV) being the most prevalent (26.8%), followed by rhinovirus (RV, 12.3%), parainfluenza viruses (PIVs1–4, 10.2%), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV, 8.7%), adenovirus (AdV, 4.3%), and metapneumovirus (MPV, 2.9%). Notably, 54% of respiratory hospitalizations had no viruses detected. The findings highlight the broad circulation of respiratory viruses shortly after NPIs were lifted in Tanzania. Surveillance for respiratory pathogens beyond influenza and SARS-CoV-2 can inform public health officials of emerging threats in the country and should be considered an important pandemic preparedness measure at a global level. This paper develops a novel modeling framework that integrates time-varying quantile-based spillover effects into a regime-switching realized volatility model. A dynamic spillover factor is constructed by identifying the most influential contributors to Bitcoin’s realized volatility across different quantile levels. This quantile-layered structure enables the model to capture heterogeneous spillover paths under varying market conditions at a macro level while also enhancing the sensitivity of volatility regime identification via its incorporation into a time-varying transition probability (TVTP) Markov-switching mechanism at a micro level. Empirical results based on the cryptocurrency market demonstrate the superior forecasting performance of the proposed TVTP-MS-HAR model relative to standard benchmark models. The model exhibits strong capability in identifying state-dependent spillovers and capturing nonlinear market dynamics. The findings further reveal an asymmetric dual-tail amplification and time-varying interconnectedness in the spillover effects, along with a pronounced asymmetry between market capitalization and systemic importance. Compared to decomposition-based approaches, the X-RV type of models—especially when combined with the proposed quantile-driven factor—offers improved robustness and predictive accuracy in the presence of extreme market behavior. This paper offers a coherent approach that bridges phenomenon identification, source localization, and predictive mechanism construction, contributing to both the academic understanding and practical risk assessment of cryptocurrency markets. Our previous research identified 12 small Cajal body-specific RNAs (scaRNAs) with reduced expression in the right ventricle in infant patients with tetralogy of Fallot. Likewise, we showed that there were significant changes in mRNA processing in the RV in these patients. ScaRNAs play a crucial role in the biochemical maturation of spliceosomal RNAs (pseudouridylation and 2′-O-methylation). We showed that variations in scaRNA1 levels resulted in changes in alternative splicing in human cells. To investigate further the role that scaRNAs play in mRNA processing, we examine here the impact of knocking down scaRNA1 in quail myoblast cells (Coturnix japonica, a well-established animal model for studying embryonic development). Following the knockdown of scaRNA1, transcriptome analysis revealed that the genes Tjp1, Map3k7, and Sppl2a were alternatively spliced. Growing evidence indicates that alternative splicing of mRNA plays an important role in regulating cell differentiation and tissue development. Our data presented here provide additional support for research to clarify the specific roles that individual scaRNAs play in regulating spliceosome function and mRNA splicing. Full article

Reference Limits for Fetal Biventricular Longitudinal Strain Using Speckle Tracking Echocardiography Across Gestational Age Groups: A Single-Center Study

Background/Objectives: The development of normal fetal cardiac function, a dynamic process that has not yet been precisely documented throughout the literature, is difficult to quantify by classic echocardiography. Our aim was to analyze the function of the fetal myocardium through speckle tracking and establish reference values for global and segmental longitudinal strain for both ventricles in fetuses with a gestational age (GA) between 22 and 39 weeks. Methods: We conducted a prospective study in which 170 fetuses underwent echocardiographic evaluation and those 150 that were eligible for the study underwent offline speckle tracking analysis. Results: A mixed-design ANOVA model with Greenhouse–Geisser correction showed no significant differences in regional strain measurements among GA groups (F [2, 147] = 1.25, p = 0.289) but showed significant differences in regional strain measurements among the right ventricle (RV), left ventricle (LV), and interventricular free wall (Greenhouse–Geisser F [1.3, 195.2] = 45.70, p < 0.001, GG ε = 0.66, original df = 2, 294). The wall-by-segment interaction term of the model was statistically significant for regional strain (Greenhouse–Geisser F [2.7, 394.2] = 27.00, p < 0.001, GG ε = 0.67, original df = 4, 588), while the segment-by-gestational age group term had a tendency toward statistical significance (Greenhouse–Geisser F [3.0, 221.4] = 2.21, p = 0.088, GG ε = 0.75, original df = 4, 294). The results of Welch’s ANOVA model showed no significant difference in right-ventricle peak global longitudinal strain (pGLS) between GA groups (F [2.0, 92.2] = 0.52, p = 0.5972) and global longitudinal strain measurements (F [2.0, 89.6] = 27.00, p = 0.3733). Conclusions: The reference values for longitudinal strain, represented by the pGLS for LV, ranged from −20.79 to −8.05 for fetuses with a GA between 22 and 27 weeks, from −20.14 to −8.99 for fetuses with a GA between 28 and 33 weeks, and from −20.19 to −8.88 for fetuses with a GA between 34 and 39 weeks. For RV pGLS, the reference values were between −18.99 and −6.35, also depending on GA. Reference ranges for the large gestational groups studied can help us to recognize subtle changes in fetal cardiac function. Full article

Background: Iron deficiency (ID) is a prevalent comorbidity of heart failure (HF), affecting up to 59% of patients, regardless of the presence of anaemia. Although its negative impact on left ventricular (LV) function is well documented, its effect on right ventricular (RV) function remains unclear. This study assessed the effects of ID on RV global longitudinal strain (RV-GLS) in patients diagnosed with acute decompensated HF (ADHF). Methods: This study included data from 100 patients hospitalised with ADHF irrespective of LV ejection fraction (LVEF) value. ID was defined according to the European Society of Cardiology HF guidelines as serum ferritin <100 ng/mL or ferritin 100–299 ng/mL, with transferrin saturation <20%. Anaemia was defined according to World Health Organization criteria as haemoglobin level <12 g/dL in women and <13 g/dL in men. RV systolic function was assessed using parameters including RV ejection fraction (RVEF), tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE), RV fractional area change (FAC), peak systolic tissue Doppler velocity of the RV annulus (RV TDI S′), acceleration time of the RV outflow tract, and RV free wall GLS. Results: The mean (±SD) age of the study population (64% male) was 70 ± 10 years. The median LVEF was 35%, with 66% of patients classified with HF with reduced ejection fraction, 6% with HF with mid-range ejection fraction, and 28% with HF with preserved ejection fraction. Fifty-eight percent of patients had ID. There were no significant differences between patients with and without ID regarding demographics, LVEF, RV FAC, RV TDI S′, or systolic pulmonary artery pressure. However, TAPSE (15.6 versus [vs.] 17.2 mm; p = 0.05) and RV free wall GLS (−14.7% vs. −18.2%; p = 0.005) were significantly lower in patients with ID, indicating subclinical RV systolic dysfunction. Conclusions: ID was associated with subclinical impairment of RV systolic function in patients diagnosed with ADHF, as evidenced by reductions in TAPSE and RV-GLS, despite the preservation of conventional RV systolic function parameters. Further research validating these findings and exploring the underlying mechanisms is warranted. Full article

Emerging infectious diseases such as chytridiomycosis and ranavirosis, caused by Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) and ranavirus (RV), respectively, are major contributors to global amphibian declines. Despite their significance, comprehensive data on the spatial epidemiology of these pathogens in South Korea remain limited. This study aimed to assess the nationwide co-occurrence and prevalence of Bd and RV across four anuran species in five administrative regions. Infection rates were analyzed in relation to host species, sex, and life history stage. Results indicated distinct prevalence patterns driven by ecological traits. Bd was predominantly detected in mountainous and coastal habitats, whereas RV was more common in flat inland areas. Both pathogens exhibited peak occurrence in central regions, likely reflecting seasonal transmission dynamics rather than stable endemic hotspots. The observed spatial heterogeneity appears to be influenced by pathogen-specific thermal tolerance and host ecology. These findings underscore the importance of understanding host–pathogen–environment interactions for effective disease surveillance and management. Continuous monitoring and integrative ecological approaches are essential to mitigate pathogen-induced biodiversity loss and to inform amphibian conservation strategies in East Asia. Full article
