The Interplay of Biomarkers and Psychosocial Variables in IPV Perpetration

Relevant biopsychosocial factors, including testosterone (T) and cortisol (C) levels, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), and difficulties in emotion regulation, have been implicated in IPV perpetration. However, further research is needed to clarify how biomarkers and psychosocial variables interact. The authors herein predicted that emotion regulation difficulties would moderate the association between ACES and IPV perpetration. The sample consisted of 30 IPV perpetrators aged 18 to 51 (M = 30.80, SD = 8.43) and 30 control non-perpetrator participants aged 18–35 (M = 24.13; SD = 4.28). All participants provided saliva samples to assess T and C levels and completed a sociodemographic questionnaire that included questions related to ACEs, and the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS). Higher levels of T and T/C, greater difficulties in emotion regulation, and higher prevalence of ACEs were found to significantly differentiate the IPV perpetrators from the non-IPV perpetrators. However, difficulties in emotional regulation did not emerge as a significant moderator between these variables, and only one of four subscales of the DERS, emotional awareness, was significantly associated with both testosterone and IPV. These results are in accord with meta-analytic results which found that DERS scores are higher in IPV perpetrators than non-perpetrators but that there was a very small association between emotional dysregulation and IPV (0.14), and emotional awareness was not associated with IPV. Similarly, effect sizes for ER variables are strong as differentiators of perpetrators and non-perpetrators.. Given the relative strength of psychological variables as moderators of childhood trauma and IPV, anger would appear to be a much stronger moderator as it is a much stronger predictor of IPV than emotional dysregulation. Purpose: Cancer immunotherapy has transformed oncology, but underserved populations face persistent disparities in access and outcomes. This review explores how artificial intelligence (AI) can help mitigate these barriers. Methods: We conducted a narrative review based on peer-reviewed literature selected for relevance to artificial intelligence, cancer immunotherapy, and healthcare challenges, without restrictions on publication date. We searched three major electronic databases: PubMed, IEEE Xplore, and arXiv, covering both biomedical and computational literature. The search included publications from January 2015 through April 2024 to capture contemporary developments in AI and cancer immunotherapy. Results: AI tools such as machine learning, natural language processing, and predictive analytics can enhance early detection, personalize treatment, and improve clinical trial representation for historically underrepresented populations. Additionally, AI-driven solutions can aid in managing side effects, expanding telehealth, and addressing social determinants of health (SDOH). However, algorithmic bias, privacy concerns, and data diversity remain major challenges. Conclusions: With intentional design and implementation, AI holds the potential to reduce disparities in cancer immunotherapy and promote more inclusive oncology care. Future efforts must focus on ethical deployment, inclusive data collection, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Full article

Space-based gravitational wave detectors, such as the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) and Taiji, will observe GWs from O(108) galactic binary systems, allowing a completely unobscured view of the Milky Way structure. While previous studies have established theoretical expectations based on idealized data-analysis methods that use the true catalog of sources, we present an end-to-end analysis pipeline for inferring galactic structure parameters based on the detector output alone. We employ the GBSIEVER algorithm to extract GB signals from LISA Data Challenge data and develop a maximum likelihood approach to estimate a bulge-disk galactic model using the resolved GBs. We introduce a two-tiered selection methodology, combining frequency derivative thresholding and proximity criteria, to address the systematic overestimation of frequency derivatives that compromises distance measurements. We quantify the performance of our pipeline in recovering key Galactic structure parameters and the potential biases introduced by neglecting the errors in estimating the parameters of individual GBs. Our methodology represents a step forward in developing practical techniques that bridge the gap between theoretical possibilities and observational implementation. Full article

The quality of life (QoL) perception has been studied in neurological diseases; however, there is limited information linking brain morphological characteristics, QoL, and cognition. Human behavior and perception are associated with specific brain areas that interact through diffuse electrochemical networking. We used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to analyze the brain region volume (BRV) correlation with the scores of Rand’s 36-item Short Form Survey (SF-36) and cognitive domains (memory and dementia status). We analyzed data from 420 adult participants in the Maracaibo Aging Study (MAS). Principal component analysis with oblimin axis rotation was used to gather redundant information from brain parcels and SF-36 domains. Canonical correlation was used to analyze the relationships between SF-36 domains and BRV (adjusted for intracranial cavity), as well as sex, age, education, obesity, and hypertension. The average age (±SD) of subjects was 56 ± 11.5 years; 71% were female; 39% were obese; 12% had diabetes, 52% hypertension, and 7% dementia. No sex-related differences were found in memory and orientation scores, but women had lower QoL scores. The 1st and 2nd canonical correlation roots support the association of SF-36 domains (except social functioning and role emotional) and total brain volume, frontal lobe volume, frontal pole, lateral orbital lobe, cerebellar, and entorhinal areas. Other variables, including age, dementia, memory score, and systolic blood pressure, had a significant influence. The results of this study demonstrate significant correlations between BRV and SF-36 components, adjusted for covariates. The frontal lobe and insula were associated with the mental health component; the lateral-orbital frontal lobe and entorhinal area were correlated with the physical component. Full article

Bucklew and Wise (1982) showed that the quantization dimension of an absolutely continuous probability measure on a given Euclidean space is constant and equals the Euclidean dimension of the space, and the quantization coefficient exists as a finite positive number. By giving different examples, in this paper, we have shown that the quantization coefficients for absolutely continuous probability measures defined on the same Euclidean space can be different. We have taken uniform distribution as a prototype of an absolutely continuous probability measure. In addition, we have also calculated the conditional optimal sets of n-points and the nth conditional quantization errors for the uniform distributions in constrained and unconstrained scenarios. Background/Objectives: Adherence to oral endocrine therapy (OET) is essential to reduce recurrence but is predominantly lower among underserved patients, leading to worse health outcomes. We aimed to depict longitudinal patterns of OET adherence using group-based trajectory modeling (GBTM) and identify predictors associated with each adherence trajectory. Methods: A single-center, retrospective study was conducted to analyze data from women 18 years or older with metastatic breast cancer who initiated with an OET and were treated from January to December 2022. Adherence was measured using a proportion of days covered (PDC > 80%) for 12 months. Binary monthly indicator of PDC was incorporated into GBTM. Four models were generated by changing the number of groups from 2 to 5, using a 2nd-order polynomial function of time. A multinomial logistic regression model was run to evaluate the predictors of non-adherence trajectories, and “adherence” was considered the reference group. Results: A total of 346 women had a (mean age of 60) years; 93% were Hispanic or of Mexican origin; 90% were taking aromatase inhibitors (AIs), with an endocrine therapy of 1.05 years. Three trajectories of adherence to GBTM were identified: a gradual decline in adherence (n = 88, 25.5%), improving suboptimal adherence (n = 106, 30.6%), and adherent (n = 152, 43.9%). Multinomial logistic regression analysis showed that significant predictors are diabetes (odds ratio (OR), 2.96; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.57–5.57) and fewer years of therapy (OR, 2.96; 95% CI, 1.57–5.57). Suboptimal adherence among RGV patients receiving OET, with approximately 56% following a non-adherent trajectory. Periodontitis is a multifactorial disease linked to host immune response and genetic predisposition. The TLR4 Asp299Gly single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP, rs4986790) has been associated with altered responses to bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and may influence susceptibility to inflammatory diseases. Given the central role of TLR4 in innate immune recognition of periodontal pathogens, this study investigates the role of rs4986790 in modulating susceptibility to periodontal inflammatory destruction. A total of 1410 individuals from four populations were genotyped, with findings indicating a significant protective effect of the polymorphic allele. Functional assays demonstrated enhanced IL-8 secretion and increased sensitivity to CD14 inhibition in cells expressing the variant receptor. These results suggest that rs4986790 modifies the LPS response via TLR4, potentially offering protection against periodontal breakdown. Full article

Native and invasive plants of the riverain region undergo a range of environmental stresses that result in excess reactive oxygen species (ROS). Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a relatively stable and quickly quantifiable way among different ROS. The herbaceous species including Artemisia princeps, Sicyos angulatus, and Solidago altissima were selected. The H2O2 and photosynthetic pigment of leaves were measured, soil samples were analyzed to quantify macronutrients such as total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and soil moisture, and photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) was also recorded at different observed sites of Arakawa Tarouemon, Japan. The H2O2 concentration of S. altissima significantly increased with high soil moisture content, whereas A. Princeps and S. angulatus significantly decreased with high soil moisture. In each species, H2O2 was negatively correlated with chlorophyll a (chl a) and chlorophyll b (chl a). When comparing different parameters involving TN, TP, PPFD, and soil moisture content with H2O2 utilizing the general additive model (GAM), only soil moisture content is significantly correlated with H2O2. Hence, this study suggests that H2O2 would be an effective biomarker for quantifying environmental stress within a short time, which can be applied for riparian native and invasive plant species vegetation regulation. Background and Objectives: Heart failure (HF) represents a major public health challenge worldwide, with rising prevalence, high morbidity and mortality rates, and substantial healthcare costs. Non-invasive telemonitoring has emerged as a promising adjunct in HF management, yet its clinical effectiveness remains unclear. Materials and Methods: In this systematic review, we summarize randomized controlled trials (RCTs) between 2004 and 2024 examining the efficacy of non-invasive telemonitoring on mortality, readmission, and quality of life (QoL) in HF. In addition, we characterize the heterogeneity of features of different telemonitoring interventions. Results: In total, 32 RCTs were included, comprising 13,294 participants. While some individual studies reported benefits, non-invasive telemonitoring demonstrated mixed effects on mortality, readmission rates, and QoL. The most common modality for interfacing with patients was by mobile application (53%), followed by web portals (22%), and stand-alone devices (19%). Periodic feedback (63%) was more common than continuous feedback (31%) or on-demand feedback (6%). Clinician reviews of patient telemonitoring data was event-triggered (44%) more commonly than based on a prespecified timeline (38%). In most designs (90%), patients played a passive role in telemonitoring. Conclusions: Non-invasive telemonitoring interventions for HF exhibited considerable variation in duration and system design and had a low rate of patient engagement. Future work should focus on identifying telemonitoring-responsive subgroups and refining telemonitoring strategies to complement traditional HF care. Full article

Background/Objectives: Neuronal oscillations play a key role in the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (PD). This study investigates the effects of random synaptic inputs, their correlations, and the interaction with synaptic dynamics and spike timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) on the membrane potential and firing patterns of subthalamic nucleus (STN) neurons, both in healthy and PD-affected states. Methods: We used a modified Hodgkin–Huxley model with a Langevin stochastic framework to study how synaptic conductance, random input fluctuations, and STDP affect STN neuron firing and membrane potential, including sensitivity to refractory period and synaptic depression variability. Results: Our results show that random inputs significantly affect the firing patterns of STN neurons, both in healthy cells and those with PD under DBS treatment. STDP, along with random refractory periods and fluctuating input currents, increases the irregularity of inter-spike intervals (ISIs) in output neuron spike trains. Sensitivity analyses highlight the key role of synaptic depression and refractory period variability in shaping firing patterns. Combining random inputs with STDP boosts the correlation between neuron activities. Furthermore, at fixed input noise levels, the model’s output closely matches experimental firing rate and ISI variability data from PD patients and animals, with statistical tests confirming significant effects of STDP on firing regularity. Conclusions: The findings suggest that the stochastic dynamics of STN neurons, combined with STDP, are crucial for shaping neuronal firing patterns in both healthy and PD-affected states. These insights improve our understanding of how noise and plasticity contribute to neural function and dysfunction, with implications for PD symptom management. Full article

Youth violence—the deliberate use of physical force or harm by young people between the ages of 10 and 24 to intimidate or cause harm to others, both online and offline—is a critical public health issue in the United States. Yet, successfully predicting future violent offenders is a complex and challenging task, as the question of why some youths resort to extreme violence while others refrain from it—despite facing similar risk factors—remains widely debated. This article highlights both risk and protective factors of youth violence through a socio-ecological lens to offer a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted factors driving youth violence in the United States. To understand the interconnectedness between individual factors and the broader environments in which individuals are embedded, we outline the risk and protective factors related to youth violence across five socio-ecological levels: (1) individual, (2) interpersonal, (3) neighborhood, (4) cultural, and (5) life course. Approaching youth violence from a holistic lens offers a greater opportunity to mitigate contributing factors and to address the deleterious impacts of this complex issue. Practice and research implications are discussed. Full article

This study used an equity ethic framework and a STEM identity model to contextualize and understand Latine students’ perceptions of STEM identity development. The purpose of this study was to investigate how Latine undergraduate students who engaged in STEM coursework perceived their learning experiences and stories of resilience through an equity ethic framework. Data were collected through interviews with 19 Latine college students attending a Hispanic-Serving Institution. Findings revealed the following themes related to Latine students’ STEM identity development and lived experiences in STEM coursework: implicit biases, imposter syndrome, self-efficacy, and support system and resources. Findings highlight the need for institutions of higher education to promote Latine students’ self-efficacy to positively influence STEM identity development while addressing systemic issues, such as implicit biases and imposter syndrome to create safe, growth-enhancing educational climates for students with minoritized identities. We provided implications to cultivate Latine students’ STEM identity development through inclusive teaching and learning practices that foster equitable learning environments as well as institutional resources that support students’ mental health and resilience. Implications of this study can be modeled at HSIs to positively influence STEM identity development and increase Latine students’ persistence in STEM fields. Full article

Obesity in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) of Texas remains a critical public health concern, with rates (46.9%) significantly exceeding those of Texas (36%) and the U.S. (34%) (p < 0.001). This study used 2024 County Health Rankings data to analyze environmental and socioeconomic contributors to obesity across 240 Texas counties, with a population-weighted focus on Hidalgo, Cameron, Starr, and Willacy counties. The RGV exhibited markedly poorer access to exercise, higher rates of physical inactivity, lower Food Environment Index scores (FEI = 4.3 vs. 5.7 in Texas), higher rates of uninsurance, worse patient-to–primary care physician (PCP) ratios (2152:1 vs. Texas 1660:1), and increased preventable hospitalizations. Multiple linear regression identified physical inactivity (β = 0.6, p = 0.01) and access to exercise (β = −0.02, p = 0.02) as significant predictors of obesity. Notably, higher uninsured rates were associated with lower reported obesity, likely due to underdiagnosis in the absence of routine care. These findings emphasize the need for targeted interventions addressing food access, environmental and recreational infrastructure, along with healthcare infrastructure in the RGV, where socioeconomic disadvantage and structural barriers magnify the impact of national obesity trends on the regional level. The growing application of soil–geosynthetic composites (SGCs) in geotechnical engineering has highlighted the critical role of reinforcement spacing in enhancing structural performance. This study presents a numerical investigation of the stress–deformation behavior of SGC masses under working stress and failure load conditions, considering both confining and unconfined pressure scenarios. A finite element (FE) model was developed to analyze stress distribution, reinforcement strain profiles at varying depths, and lateral displacement at open facings. Results revealed that vertical stresses in reinforced and unreinforced soil masses were nearly identical, while lateral stresses increased notably in reinforced masses, particularly near reinforcement layers and open facings. Closer reinforcement spacing (0.2 m) effectively reduced lateral displacement and enhanced structural stability compared with wider spacing (0.4 m). In some cases, strengthening reinforcement in the upper portion of the SGC mass proved more effective under failure loads in both confining and unconfined pressure conditions. These findings provide critical insights for optimizing reinforcement spacing in SGC systems, with implications for the design of retaining walls and bridge abutments. Full article

This article reveals the various types of complications that are associated with dialysis and kidney-associated disease, including left ventricular hypertrophy, heart failure, vascular heart disease, arrhythmias, diabetes mellitus, intradialytic hypertension, and coronary heart disease. The molecular mechanisms underlying the development of cardiovascular disease in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), including the role of nitric oxide (NO) signaling, have been extensively studied. Patients suffering from CKD need treatment with hemodialysis at the end stages. The kidney is considered the chief excretory organ in humans, which excretes various types of waste materials from the body and balances the acid–base ratio, due to which its role in homeostasis has been considered. When kidneys fail to function properly due to various diseases, hemodialysis plays the role of the kidneys. This procedure involves removing a patient’s blood, filtering it through a dialyzer to remove waste products, and returning the cleaned blood to the body. However, for the hemodialysis procedure, fistula formation is necessary, which is created by specific surgery in which the radial artery and superficial vein are connected in the forearm, near the wrist or elbow. This arteriovenous (AV) fistula creation fails sometimes and causes complications. The prolonged use of hemodialysis procedures and improper care also lead to many complications in chronic kidney patients, which have been discussed in detail in this review article. Full article
