This paper proposes a novel dual-functional radar-communication (DFRC) framework that integrates unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications into an integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system, termed the ISAC-UAV architecture. In this system, the UAV’s mobility is leveraged to simultaneously serve multiple single-antenna uplink users (UEs) and perform radar-based sensing tasks. A key challenge stems from the target position uncertainty due to movement, which impairs matched filtering and beamforming, thereby degrading both uplink reception and sensing performance. Moreover, UAV energy consumption associated with mobility must be considered to ensure energy-efficient operation. We aim to jointly maximize radar sensing accuracy and minimize UAV movement energy over multiple time steps, while maintaining reliable uplink communications. To address this multi-objective optimization, we propose a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework based on a long short-term memory (LSTM)-enhanced deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) network. By leveraging historical target trajectory data, the model improves prediction of target positions, enhancing sensing accuracy. The proposed DRL-based approach enables joint optimization of UAV trajectory and uplink power control over time. Extensive simulations validate that our method significantly improves communication quality and sensing performance, while ensuring energy-efficient UAV operation. Comparative results further confirm the model’s adaptability and robustness in dynamic environments, outperforming existing UAV trajectory planning and resource allocation benchmarks. Full article

This study explores entertainment consumption patterns in Romania, a transitional digital culture characterized by high digital connectivity but underdeveloped physical infrastructure. Employing a dual qualitative coding methodology, this research combines inductive analysis of consumer focus groups with deductive analysis of expert interviews, enabling a multi-layered interpretation of both overt behaviors and latent emotional drivers. Seven key thematic dimensions, motivational depth, perceived barriers, emotional needs, clarity of preferences, future behavioral intentions, social connection, and identity construction, were analyzed and compared using a Likert-based scoring framework, supported by a radar chart and comparison matrix. Findings reveal both convergence and divergence between consumer and expert perspectives. While consumers emphasize immediate experiences and logistical constraints, experts uncover deeper emotional motivators such as validation, mentorship, and identity formation. This behavioral–emotional gap suggests that, although digital entertainment dominates due to accessibility, it often lacks the emotional richness associated with physical formats, which are preferred but less accessible. This study underscores the importance of triangulated qualitative inquiry in revealing not only stated preferences but also unconscious psychological needs. It offers actionable insights for designing emotionally intelligent and culturally responsive entertainment strategies in digitally saturated yet infrastructure-limited environments. Full article

This case report presents a multidisciplinary forensic investigation into a cold case involving a missing person in Italy, likely linked to a homicide that occurred in 2008. The investigation applied a standardized protocol integrating satellite imagery analysis, site reconnaissance, vegetation clearance, ground-penetrating radar (GPR), and cadaver dog (K9) deployment. A dedicated decision tree guided each phase, allowing for efficient allocation of resources and minimizing investigative delays. Although no human remains were recovered, the case demonstrates the practical utility and operational robustness of a structured, evidence-based model that supports decision-making even in the absence of positive findings. The approach highlights the relevance of “negative” results, which, when derived through scientifically validated procedures, offer substantial value by excluding burial scenarios with a high degree of reliability. This case is particularly significant in the Italian forensic context, where the adoption of standardized search protocols remains limited, especially in complex outdoor environments. The integration of geophysical, remote sensing, and canine methodologies—rooted in forensic geoarchaeology—provides a replicable framework that enhances both investigative effectiveness and the evidentiary admissibility of findings in court. The protocol illustrated in this study supports the consistent evaluation of large and morphologically complex areas, reduces the risk of interpretive error, and reinforces the transparency and scientific rigor expected in judicial settings. As such, it offers a model for improving forensic search strategies in both national and international contexts, particularly in long-standing or high-profile missing persons cases. Full article

Compared to traditional real-valued neural networks, which process only amplitude information, complex-valued neural networks handle both amplitude and phase information, leading to superior performance in polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) image classification tasks. This paper proposes a multi-scale feature extraction (MSFE) method based on a 3D complex-valued network to improve classification accuracy by fully leveraging multi-scale features, including phase information. We first designed a complex-valued three-dimensional network framework combining complex-valued 3D convolution (CV-3DConv) with complex-valued squeeze-and-excitation (CV-SE) modules. This framework is capable of simultaneously capturing spatial and polarimetric features, including both amplitude and phase information, from PolSAR images. Furthermore, to address robustness degradation from limited labeled samples, we introduced a multi-scale learning strategy that jointly models global and local features. Specifically, global features extract overall semantic information, while local features help the network capture region-specific semantics. This strategy enhances information utilization by integrating multi-scale receptive fields, complementing feature advantages. Extensive experiments on four benchmark datasets demonstrated that the proposed method outperforms various comparison methods, maintaining high classification accuracy across different sampling rates, thus validating its effectiveness and robustness. Aerosols play an important role in global meteorology and climate, as well as in air transport and human health, but there are still many unknowns on their effects and importance, in particular for the coarser (giant and ultragiant) aerosol particles. In this study, we aim to exploit the synergy between Raman lidar and Ka-band cloud radar to enlarge the size range in which aerosols can be observed and characterized. To this end, we developed an inversion technique that retrieves the aerosol microphysical properties based on cloud radar reflectivity and linear depolarization ratio. We applied this technique to a 6-year-long dataset, which was created using a recently developed methodology for the identification of giant aerosols in cloud radar measurements, with measurements from Potenza in Italy. Similarly, using collocated and concurrent lidar profiles, a dataset of aerosol microphysical properties using a widely used inversion technique complements the radar-retrieved dataset. Hence, we demonstrate that the combined use of lidar- and radar-derived aerosol properties enables the inclusion of particles with radii up to 12 µm, which is twice the size typically observed using atmospheric lidar alone. The present paper reports for the first time the comparison of radar-derived eddy dissipation rate (EDR) and vertical velocity with measurements from six aircraft for an intense squall line crossing Hong Kong. The study objectives are three-fold: (i) to characterise the structural dynamics of the intense squall line; (ii) to identify the dynamical change in EDR and vertical velocity during its eastward propagation across Hong Kong with a view to gaining insight into the intensity change of the squall line and the severity of its impact on aircraft flying near it; (iii) to carry out quantitative comparison of EDR and vertical velocity derived from remote sensing instruments, i.e., weather radars and in situ measurements from aircraft, so that the quality of the former dataset can be evaluated by the latter. During the passage of the squall line and taking reference of the radar reflectivity, vertical circulation and the subsiding flow at the rear, it appeared to be weakening in crossing over Hong Kong, possibly due to land friction by terrain and urban morphology. This is also consistent with the maximum gusts recorded by the dense network of ground-based anemometers in Hong Kong. However, from the EDR and the vertical velocity of the aircraft, the weakening trend was not very apparent, and rather severe turbulence was still recorded by the aircraft flying through the squall line into the region with stratiform precipitation when the latter reached the eastern coast of Hong Kong. In general, the radar-based and the aircraft-based EDRs are consistent with each other. The radar-retrieved maximum vertical velocity may be smaller in magnitude at times, possibly arising from the limited spatial and temporal resolutions of the aircraft data. The results of this paper could be a useful reference for the development of radar-based turbulence products for aviation applications. Full article

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR), as an active microwave imaging system, has the capability of all-weather and all-time observation. In response to the challenges of aircraft detection in SAR images due to the complex background interference caused by the continuous scattering of airport buildings and the demand for real-time processing, this paper proposes a YOLOv7-MTI recognition model that combines the attention mechanism and involution. By integrating the MTCN module and involution, performance is enhanced. The Multi-TASP-Conv network (MTCN) module aims to effectively extract low-level semantic and spatial information using a shared lightweight attention gate structure to achieve cross-dimensional interaction between “channels and space” with very few parameters, capturing the dependencies among multiple dimensions and improving feature representation ability. Involution helps the model adaptively adjust the weights of spatial positions through dynamic parameterized convolution kernels, strengthening the discrete strong scattering points specific to aircraft and suppressing the continuous scattering of the background, thereby alleviating the interference of complex backgrounds. Experiments on the SAR-AIRcraft-1.0 dataset, which includes seven categories such as A220, A320/321, A330, ARJ21, Boeing737, Boeing787, and others, show that the mAP and mRecall of YOLOv7-MTI reach 93.51% and 96.45%, respectively, outperforming Faster R-CNN, SSD, YOLOv5, YOLOv7, and YOLOv8. Compared with the basic YOLOv7, mAP is improved by 1.47%, mRecall by 1.64%, and FPS by 8.27%, achieving an effective balance between accuracy and speed, providing research ideas for SAR aircraft recognition. Due to the limited endurance of UAVs, especially in scenarios involving large areas and dense target nodes, it is challenging for multiple UAVs to complete diverse tasks while ensuring timely execution. Toward this, we propose a cross-platform system consisting of an aircraft carrier (AC) and multiple UAVs, which makes unified task planning for included heterogeneous platforms to maximize the efficiency of the entire combat system. The carrier-based UAV swarm mission planning problem is formulated to minimize completion time and resource utilization, taking into account large-scale targets, multi-type tasks, and multi-obstacle environments. Since the problem is complex, we design a decoupled framework to simplify the solution by decomposing it into two levels: upper-level AC path planning and bottom-level multi-UAV cooperative mission planning. At the upper level, a drop point determination method and a discrete genetic algorithm incorporating improved A* (DGAIIA) are proposed to plan the AC’s path in the presence of no-fly zones and radar threats. At the bottom level, an improved differential evolution algorithm with a market mechanism (IDEMM) is proposed to minimize task completion time and maximize UAV utilization. Specifically, a dual-switching search strategy and a neighborhood-first buying-and-selling mechanism are developed to improve the search efficiency of the IDEMM. The growth and sustainability of today’s global economy heavily relies on smooth maritime operations. The increasing security concerns to marine environments pose complex security challenges, such as smuggling, illegal fishing, human trafficking, and environmental threats, for traditional surveillance methods due to their limitations. Artificial intelligence (AI), particularly deep learning, has offered strong capabilities for automating object detection, anomaly identification, and situational awareness in maritime environments. In this paper, we have reviewed the state-of-the-art deep learning models mainly proposed in recent literature (2020–2025), including convolutional neural networks, recurrent neural networks, Transformers, and multimodal fusion architectures. We have highlighted their success in processing diverse data sources such as satellite imagery, AIS, SAR, radar, and sensor inputs from UxVs. Additionally, multimodal data fusion techniques enhance robustness by integrating complementary data, yielding more detection accuracy. There still exist challenges in detecting small or occluded objects, handling cluttered scenes, and interpreting unusual vessel behaviours, especially under adverse sea conditions. Additionally, explainability and real-time deployment of AI models in operational settings are open research areas. Overall, the review of existing maritime literature suggests that deep learning is rapidly transforming maritime domain awareness and response, with significant potential to improve global maritime security and operational efficiency. We have also provided key datasets for deep learning models in the maritime security domain. Full article

Detection of small vessels is of great significance for maritime safety assurance, abnormal vessel tracking, illegal fishing supervision, and combating smuggling. However, the radar reflection intensity of small vessels is low, making them difficult to detected with the radar’s constant false-alarm rate (CFAR) algorithm. To enhance the detection capability for small vessels, we propose an improved CFAR scheme. Specifically, we first compared traditional CFAR processing results of radar data with automatic identification system (AIS) data to identify some special targets. These special targets, which possessed AIS information, but remained undetected by radar, enabled an iTransformer model to generate more reasonable CFAR threshold adjustments. iTransformer adaptively lowered the threshold of the areas around these targets until they were detected by radar. This process made it easier to discover the small boats in the surrounding area. Experimental results showed that our method reduces the missed detection rate of small vessels by 73.4% and the false-alarm rate by 60.7% in simulated scenarios, significantly enhancing the CFAR detection capability. Overall, our study provides a new solution for ensuring maritime navigation safety and strengthening illegal supervision, while also offering new technical references for the field of radar detection. The increasing demand for noninvasive inspection (NII) of complex civil infrastructures requires overcoming the limitations of traditional ground-penetrating radar (GPR) systems in addressing diverse and large-scale applications. The solution proposed in this study focuses on an initial design that integrates a low-SWaP (Size, Weight, and Power) ultra-wideband (UWB) impulse radar with realistic electromagnetic modeling for deployment on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The system incorporates ultra-realistic antenna and propagation models, utilizing Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) solvers and multilayered media, to replicate realistic airborne sensing geometries. Verification and calibration are performed by comparing simulation outputs with laboratory measurements using varied material samples and target models. Custom signal processing algorithms are developed to extract meaningful features from complex electromagnetic environments and support anomaly detection. Additionally, machine learning (ML) techniques are trained on synthetic data to automate the identification of structural characteristics. The results demonstrate accurate agreement between simulations and measurements, as well as the potential for deploying this design in flight tests within realistic environments featuring complex electromagnetic interference. Intrusion Detection and Real-Time Adaptive Security in Medical IoT Using a Cyber-Physical System Design

The increasing reliance on Medical Internet of Things (MIoT) devices introduces critical cybersecurity vulnerabilities, necessitating advanced, adaptive defense mechanisms. Recent cyber incidents—such as compromised critical care systems, modified therapeutic device outputs, and fraudulent clinical data inputs—demonstrate that these threats now directly impact life-critical aspects of patient security. In this paper, we introduce a machine learning-enabled Cognitive Cyber-Physical System (ML-CCPS), which is designed to identify and respond to cyber threats in MIoT environments through a layered cognitive architecture. The system is constructed on a feedback-looped architecture integrating hybrid feature modeling, physical behavioral analysis, and Extreme Learning Machine (ELM)-based classification to provide adaptive access control, continuous monitoring, and reliable intrusion detection. ML-CCPS is capable of outperforming benchmark classifiers with an acceptable computational cost, as evidenced by its macro F1-score of 97.8% and an AUC of 99.1% when evaluated with the ToN-IoT dataset. Alongside classification accuracy, the framework has demonstrated reliable behaviour under noisy telemetry, maintained strong efficiency in resource-constrained settings, and scaled effectively with larger numbers of connected devices. Comparative evaluations, radar-style synthesis, and ablation studies further validate its effectiveness in real-time MIoT environments and its ability to detect novel attack types with high reliability. This study examines a convergence event at the trailing end of a cold front observed in the United States’ Southern Great Plains region on 28 September 1997, using an array of in situ and remote sensing instruments. The event exhibited a structure with elevated divergence near 3 km AGL and moisture transport over both warm and cold sectors. Data from Raman lidar (RL), Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (AERI), and Radar Wind Profilers (RWP) were used to characterize vertical profiles of the event, revealing the presence of a narrow moist updraft, horizontal moisture advection, and cloud development ahead of the front. Convection parameters, Convective Available Potential Energy (CAPE) and Convective Inhibition (CIN), were derived from collocated AERI and RL. Regions of high CAPE were aligned with areas of high moisture, indicating that convection was more favorable at moist elevated levels than near the surface. RWP observations revealed vorticity structures consistent with existing theories. This study highlights the value of high-resolution, continuous profiling from remote sensors to resolve mesoscale processes and evaluate convection potential. The event underscores the role of elevated moisture and wind shear in modulating convection initiation along a trailing-end cold front boundary where mesoscale and synoptic forces interact. Underground blasting vibrations are a critical factor influencing the stability of mine slopes. However, existing studies have yet to establish a quantitative relationship or clarify the underlying mechanisms linking blasting-induced vibrations and slope deformation. Taking the Shilu Iron Mine as a case study, this research develops a dynamic mechanical response model of slope stability that accounts for blasting loads. By integrating slope radar remote sensing data and applying the Pearson correlation coefficient, this study quantitatively evaluates—for the first time—the correlation between underground blasting activity and slope surface deformation. The results reveal that blasting vibrations are characterized by typical short-duration, high-amplitude pulse patterns, with horizontal shear stress identified as the primary trigger for slope shear failure. Both elevation and lithological conditions significantly influence the intensity of vibration responses: high-elevation areas and structurally loose rock masses exhibit greater dynamic sensitivity. A pronounced lag effect in slope deformation was observed following blasting, with cumulative displacements increasing by 10.13% and 34.06% at one and six hours post-blasting, respectively, showing a progressive intensification over time. Mechanistically, the impact of blasting on slope stability operates through three interrelated processes: abrupt perturbations in the stress environment, stress redistribution due to rock mass deformation, and the long-term accumulation of fatigue-induced damage. This integrated approach provides new insights into slope behavior under blasting disturbances and offers valuable guidance for slope stability assessment and hazard mitigation. Full article

Accurate estimation of Interrupted Sampling Repeater Jamming (ISRJ) sampling duration is essential for effective radar anti-jamming. However, in complex electromagnetic environments, the simultaneous presence of suppressive and deceptive jamming, coupled with significant signal overlap in the time–frequency domain, renders ISRJ separation and parameter estimation considerably challenging. To address this challenge, this paper proposes a method utilizing the Fractional Fourier Transform (FRFT) and a Hybrid Modality Fusion Network (HMFN) for ISRJ signal separation and sampling-duration estimation. The proposed method first employs FRFT and a time–frequency mask to separate the ISRJ and target echo from the mixed signal. This process effectively suppresses interference and extracts the ISRJ signal. Subsequently, an HMFN is employed for high-precision estimation of the ISRJ sampling duration, offering crucial parameter support for active electromagnetic countermeasures. Simulation results validate the performance of the proposed method. Specifically, even under strong interference conditions with a Signal-to-Jamming Ratio (SJR) of −5 dB for deceptive jamming and as low as −10 dB for suppressive jamming, the regression model’s coefficient of determination still reaches 0.91. This result clearly demonstrates the method’s robustness and effectiveness in complex electromagnetic environments. Full article
