The Asian green mussel Perna viridis is expanding across coastal systems of the Americas, creating demand for curated molecular references to support biosecurity, aquaculture monitoring, and comparative invasion studies. Here, we report the first complete mitochondrial genomes of invasive P. viridis from Brazil and the southwestern Atlantic, generated from two specimens collected in Santa Catarina, currently the southernmost documented sector of the Brazilian range. Long-range PCR, Oxford Nanopore sequencing, read-supported assembly, manual annotation, comparative mitogenomics, nucleotide-diversity analysis, protein-level divergence, and phylogenomic inference were used to generate and evaluate complete mitochondrial references. The two circular assemblies were 16,015 bp and 16,011 bp and contained 38 annotated features, including 13 protein-coding genes, 23 tRNAs, and two rRNAs, all on the H strand, with an identical A+T content of 67.5%. Pairwise comparisons among the four complete P. viridis mitogenomes analyzed showed high overall similarity but retained 20–125 SNPs/mismatches and one to 12 indel events. Gene order was conserved within P. viridis but differed from P. canaliculus and P. perna, and phylogenomics placed the Brazilian assemblies within the P. viridis clade. These curated mitogenomes provide initial complete mitochondrial references for future marker testing and comparative studies of P. viridis in the southwestern Atlantic, but the two-specimen dataset should not be used to infer population origin, invasion routes, or connectivity. Background/Objectives: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic immune-mediated neurological disorder for which few modifiable risk factors are established. Vitamin C, due to its antioxidant and neuroprotective properties, has been hypothesized to reduce MS risk, but epidemiological evidence remains inconsistent. Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study using UK Biobank data, including 486,908 adults aged 37–70 years free of neurological disease. Regular vitamin C supplementation was self-reported at recruitment. Incident MS cases were identified during a median follow-up of 13.5 years. Propensity score weighting was used to balance a wide range of demographic, lifestyle, and health-related confounders. Weighted Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs). Effect modification by polygenic risk score (PRS) for MS was assessed, and multiple sensitivity analyses were performed. Results: During follow-up, 452 participants were diagnosed with MS. Vitamin C supplementation was reported by 8.8% of participants (missingness = 1.5%) and was associated with a lower risk of incident MS (HR = 0.51, [95%CI: 0.32; 0.82], p = 0.004). The estimate was consistent across multiple sensitivity analyses. The association varied according to genetic susceptibility, with significant nonlinear multiplicative interaction (p = 0.004) and additive interaction (p < 0.001). Specifically, significant associations were observed only among those with average or high MS-PRS. Conclusions: Vitamin C supplementation was associated with a lower risk of incident MS, with the association varying across levels of genetic susceptibility. Although residual confounding cannot be excluded, sensitivity analyses did not identify similar associations for overall supplement use or multivitamin use, providing some reassurance against a generalized healthy-user effect. Replication in independent cohorts is warranted. Full article

Indoor air quality in school classrooms is strongly influenced by ventilation strategies, which in most existing buildings rely on manual window opening rather than controlled mechanical systems. This study investigates real indoor CO2 conditions in an Italian secondary school classroom equipped with a decentralised heat recovery ventilation unit (HRV) and evaluates the effectiveness of an automated control strategy in improving air quality. Continuous CO2 monitoring was conducted over two consecutive school years using calibrated sensors. During the first year, ventilation management was left entirely to occupant discretion; in the second, an automated scheduling strategy was implemented via a low-cost smart plug, progressively extending daily HRV operation from 1.5 to 5.0 h across the winter months. During the uncontrolled year, the HRV was never activated despite being installed, and 3.92% of total teaching time during the winter season was spent under Category IV conditions (ΔCO2 > 1350 ppm). The automated strategy during the winter reduced Category IV exposure to 1.63% and was associated with a 32.3% reduction in student absences. These findings confirm that the primary barrier to effective mechanical ventilation in schools is not hardware availability, but the absence of a structured operational strategy. Full article

Bio-based packaging is receiving increasing attention due to the environmental impact of fossil-based plastics. However, its practical implementation requires further evidence on material processing and functional performance. This study evaluated the thermal properties of expanded polylactic acid (E-PLA) prototypes blended with raw, minimally processed agroforestry residues. Specifically, spruce bark and grape stalks were used as waste wood fibers. This study focused primarily on the thermal characterization of the materials by measuring thermal conductivity and resistance. To evaluate the distribution of the two fractions (polymer and fibrous), samples were created with various volumetric ratios between the parts. Simultaneous pressure and microwave heating of the sample were used to stabilize the material. To characterize the raw materials used in this study, bulk density and moisture content were measured. To characterize the mixed materials samples, thermal conductivity and resistance, bulk density, and pressure were measured. To investigate the variables that influence thermal characteristics, statistical analyses such as regression models, ANCOVA, and Spearman correlation were applied. These analyses showed that increasing the biofiber content significantly reduced thermal resistance and increased thermal conductivity. However, negligible effects were observed for the type of fiber used and the duration of the heat treatment. These results describe the thermal properties of blends containing E-PLA and agroforestry residues. The results also show a marked effect of the biofiber content on thermal performance. This study does not provide a comprehensive characterization of the new materials, as it focuses on the prototyping methodology and the laboratory-scale production feasibility of E-PLA/agroforestry-residue prototypes. This study presents DEDICA (Database of Hydrogeological Instability Events in Calabria, southern Italy), developed by the District Basin Authority of the Southern Apennines (ABDAM) in collaboration with the CNR-IRPI. The database integrates digitized historical sources, chronicle-based records, and previously unpublished archival data that were systematically analyzed, validated, and georeferenced within a GIS environment. After two years of development, DEDICA includes 5329 landslides, 2097 flood events, and 1711 urban flooding occurrences spanning the period 1900–2025. The system supports continuous data updating, enabling both the integration of recent events and the refinement of historical records. The database provides a comprehensive tool for identifying areas prone to geo-hydrological hazards based on historical recurrence, supporting hazard assessment, land-use planning, and risk management strategies. The methodological framework, database structure, and data processing workflow are described in detail. Spatio-temporal analyses highlight the distribution of instability processes, identifying the most affected sectors and revealing seasonal patterns and long-term trends. DEDICA represents a pilot initiative within a broader program aimed at extending the inventory to all regions under ABDAM jurisdiction, ultimately contributing to the development of a unified geo-hydrological hazard database for southern Italy. Silages produced from different forage species exhibit substantial variability in chemical composition, digestibility, and fermentation characteristics, which may influence forage quality and preservation efficiency in livestock systems. This study evaluated the nutritional and fermentative variability of silages produced from six forage species (Zea mays L., Sorghum bicolor L., Medicago sativa L., Helianthus annuus L., Cenchrus purpureus, and Saccharum officinarum L.) using multivariate analytical approaches. A database comprising 237 observations, obtained from 24 independent ensiling experiments, was analyzed. Chemical composition, fermentative parameters, and in vitro dry matter digestibility were evaluated through principal component analysis (PCA), canonical discriminant analysis (CDA), and Pearson correlation analysis. Significant differences among forage species were detected (p < 0.05). PCA explained 76.2% of the total variance in the chemical dataset and 85.1% in the fermentative dataset, revealing clear multivariate patterns among silage types. Chemical composition traits provided greater discrimination among silages than fermentative variables, particularly through differences in fiber fractions, soluble carbohydrates, digestibility, and buffering capacity. Corn and sorghum silages were associated with greater starch availability and favorable fermentation profiles, whereas elephant grass and sugarcane exhibited higher fiber concentrations. Alfalfa showed greater crude protein concentration and digestibility, while sunflower was characterized by elevated lignin concentration. Overall, multivariate analyses provided an integrated interpretation of nutritional and fermentative relationships among silages, highlighting species-specific responses to ensiling and their implications for forage conservation and livestock production systems. Alkaline water is increasingly marketed for musculoskeletal and recovery benefits, yet its relevance to healthy aging, sarcopenia prevention, and functional capacity in older adults remains largely unexplored. This systematic evidence map and translational appraisal examined whether the available comparative human evidence on alkaline water is applicable to aging populations and longevity research. Following PRISMA guidance, PubMed and Scopus were searched from January 2005 to September 2025. Eligible studies were controlled or comparative observational human studies reporting muscle strength, physical performance, or recovery outcomes. Risk of bias was assessed using RoB 2, ROBINS-I, and JBI criteria; evidence certainty was judged narratively using GRADE-informed principles. Ten studies met the inclusion criteria. Most enrolled young athletic populations; only two had partial relevance to aging cohorts. Crucially, no study included participants aged 65 years or older or assessed primary sarcopenia-relevant endpoints such as appendicular lean mass, gait speed, or chair-rise performance; this total absence of data in the target demographic represents the central limitation of the current literature. Risk of bias ranged from some concerns to serious. The most consistent signals were short-term improvements in lactate clearance and perceived exertion in young male athletes. Evidence for strength, functional performance, and safety in older adults was absent or indirect. Current evidence, rated low to very low certainty for aging-relevant outcomes, does not support alkaline water as an evidence-based strategy for healthy aging or muscle preservation in older adults. Age-appropriate trials using EWGSOP2-aligned outcomes are urgently needed. Full article

The state of STEM interventions focused on broadening participation remains uncertain due to federal funding cuts made by the Trump administration. Though long-standing STEM interventions, such as Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation, no longer exist in the same format, we argue that evidence from these interventions can assist researchers and educators in their pursuit of STEM equity moving forward, especially concerning STEM transfer students. Our qualitative embedded multi-case study sought to investigate how racially minoritized STEM vertical transfer students (i.e., community college transfer to 4-year institutions) navigate the transfer process within institutions that make up the Illinois Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation. Leveraging Perna’s college access and choice model and Ray’s theory of racialized organizations, our study was guided by the following research questions: (1) How do racially minoritized students experience and interpret the transfer process from a two-year institution to a four-year Alliance institution, particularly in relation to organizational structures, practices, and interactions? (2) How does the Alliance organize, enact, and institutionalize transfer support across partner two-year and four-year institutions, and how do these processes shape racially minoritized students’ transfer experiences? Findings highlight a racialized transfer process that includes multiple contextual layers. Contextual layers are discussed in relation to the current state of STEM interventions, and considerations moving forward are provided. Full article

Schmallenberg virus (SBV) has evolved from an emergent Orthobunyavirus identified in Europe in 2011 into an endemic pathogen with complex epidemiological dynamics. This review focuses on three key aspects: pathogenesis and fetal neurotropism, diagnostic limitations within the Simbu serogroup, and challenges in disease control. SBV pathogenesis is characterized by immune evasion mediated by the NSs protein and a marked tropism for the developing central nervous system, resulting in congenital malformations when infection occurs during critical gestational stages. Similar mechanisms are shared with other Simbu serogroup viruses, contributing to overlapping clinical presentations and complicating differential diagnosis. Diagnostic approaches are constrained by the short duration of viraemia and significant serological cross-reactivity among related viruses. While RT-qPCR is effective for detecting acute infections, its utility is limited for retrospective diagnosis, where fetal tissues and pre-colostral serology are required. Widely used ELISAs lack serogroup specificity, raising concerns about the potential under-recognition of co-circulating or emerging viruses. Despite advances in vaccine development, implementation remains limited, and vector control strategies provide only partial mitigation. SBV therefore represents a valuable model for understanding arbovirus persistence in temperate regions. Addressing current challenges will require improved diagnostic specificity, sustainable vaccination strategies, and integrated surveillance systems. Full article

Background: The nature and prognosis of type A intramural hematoma (TAIMH) are not well established. In this study, we evaluated the early and late outcome after surgery for this emergency condition. Methods: The ERTAAD registry included consecutive patients who underwent surgery for acute type A aortic dissection (TAAD) or TAIMH at 18 European centers for cardiac surgery. In this study, we compared the early and late outcomes of TAIMH and typical TAAD. Results: In total, 3902 consecutive patients were included in the ERTAAD registry, and 386 (9.9%) patients had TAIMH. Penn class a was present in 43.1% TAAD patients and in 34.5% TAIMH patients (p < 0.001). Among 3-month survivors, 10-year relative survival was 0.80 (95%CI 0.77–0.84) in TAAD patients and 0.76 (95%CI 0.63–0.88) in TAIMH patients. Propensity-score matching yielded 386 pairs of patients, and no significant difference was observed between the study groups in terms of early and late outcomes. In-hospital mortality rates were comparable (TAIMH 13.5% vs. TAAD 16.3%, p = 0.266). Ten-year mortality was 51.3% among TAIMH patients and 51.6% among TAAD patients (p = 0.274). TAIMH and TAAD had similar 10-year cumulative incidence rates of proximal (4.2% vs. 3.3%, p = 0.738) and distal aortic reoperations (12.6% vs. 7.6%, p = 0.779). Conclusions: This cohort study showed that the prevalence of patients with TAIMH requiring surgery is low and their risk profile is significantly different as shown by the Penn classification. The early and late outcomes of the study groups were not statistically different compared to typical TAAD when adjusted for baseline and operative variables. The relative survivals of 90-day TAIMH and TAAD survivors were low compared to the matched general population, indicating that surgically treated TAIMH demonstrated postoperative outcomes are poor and comparable to surgically treated TAAD after adjustment. Post-hoc power analysis suggested that much larger studies are needed to confirm these findings. These results are limited to TAIMH patients who underwent surgery, and this study did not address the outcome of patients who were conservatively treated. Full article

Background: Epidemiological alerts about the possible spread of different pathogens have highlighted the risk of international travelers contracting infectious diseases when visiting endemic areas. The role of travelers in disease transmission underscores the importance of pre-travel consultations, which provide critical information on health risks, vaccinations, and preventive measures. Understanding travelers’ risk perceptions and behaviors is essential for enhancing global health security in the post-pandemic era. Methods: A cross-sectional study (June 2023–January 2024) was conducted by administering an anonymous questionnaire at the Rome-Fiumicino Airport International Prophylaxis Clinic (USMAF-SASN). The questionnaire explored demographics, travel patterns, risk perceptions, vaccination behaviors, and sources of health information. Descriptive statistics and a multivariable logistic regression analysis were performed to identify low-risk perception predictors. Results: Among 217 participants, 89.8% were Italian, with a balanced representation of genders. The primary purpose of travel was tourism (61.6%), followed by work-related trip (23.1%). While 77.1% rated preventive measures as effective, 23.2% evaluated infection risk as low. Being male (aOR 3.63, 95% CI 1.37–9.61), and being a hotel user (aOR 6.27, 95% CI 2.43–16.15), was significantly associated with a lower risk perception. As expected, healthcare professionals and individuals using institutional healthcare sources showed a higher risk awareness. Vaccination uptake at the Airport Clinic was motivated by self-protection, vaccine confidence, and poor time flexibility to access local vaccination services, and last-minute plans, making the airport a more convenient option. Conclusions: Travelers’ risk perception is influenced by gender, profession, accommodation type, and information sources. Public health strategies should enhance health literacy, promote pre-travel consultations, and improve access to preventive services. Strengthening collaborations between health authorities, educational institutions, and the travel sector is key to mitigating health risks and ensuring global health security. Future interventions should address structural vaccination barriers and improve outreach to under-informed travelers. Full article

The increasing demand for sustainable and affordable surfactants requires the exploration of novel bio-based alternatives. In this context, this work investigates the potential of baker’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) as a surface-active agent. To this purpose, the performance of commercial dry, commercial fresh, and cultivated yeast was evaluated by characterizing their wetting behavior and formulating emulsions with a fixed oil-to-water ratio. Microscopic and macroscopic stability was monitored over 24 h and quantified via the creaming index (CI). The experimental results demonstrate that both the yeast source and concentration significantly dictate the surface properties and emulsion stability. Notably, commercial dry yeast exhibited the highest degree of hydrophobicity, likely attributed to the presence of sorbitan monostearate (SMS) in the formulation. Consequently, this was the main variant capable of producing stable emulsions, with microscopic evidence suggesting a Pickering-like stabilization mechanism driven by the irreversible adsorption of yeast cells at the oil–water interface. Conversely, commercial fresh and cultivated yeast failed to exert significant stabilizing activity. These results demonstrate that S. cerevisiae biomass can be effectively repurposed as a functional constituent in green emulsion technology, offering a scalable pathway for the development of biocompatible, particle-stabilized industrial formulations. Purpose: This paper aimed to identify dosimetric, clinical, and CT-based densitometric predictors of radiation-induced pulmonary events in breast cancer patients treated with moderately hypofractionated radiotherapy. Materials and Methods: A single-institution cohort of 1172 consecutive patients treated with 3D conformal whole-breast radiotherapy (40 Gy/15 fractions) before 2017 was analyzed. Ipsilateral lung DVHs and CT densitometry metrics were extracted. Clinical variables and cardiac calcification (CAC) scores (Agatston_score, CAC_volume, Max_HU_Heart) were included. Univariable and multivariable logistic regressions were performed; collinearity was assessed via Spearman correlation and VIF. Optimal thresholds were derived using the Youden index. Internal validation used bootstrap resampling. Results: After a median follow-up of 6.5 years, 18 patients developed moderate/severe pulmonary events. The univariable analysis showed associations with lung densitometric features (median/mean HU, 10th percentile, the lung volume with HU < −850 (V850)), V37 Gy, lung volume, and CAC scores. Lower lung HU values and larger lung volumes were linked to higher risk. The best models combined V850 (or lung volume) with a CAC metric. The model including V850 > 175 cc and continuous Max_HU_Heart achieved an optimism-corrected AUC of 0.68, with good fit and calibration (Hosmer–Lemeshow p = 0.33, R2 = 0.847). Conclusions: The baseline cardiopulmonary status, captured by lung and heart densitometry, predicts pulmonary toxicity better than dosimetry. V850 > 175 cc was associated with a 4-fold higher risk, consistent with air trapping, known as a marker of emphysema. Full article

Background/Objectives: Marine-derived bioactive compounds have attracted increasing interest due to their potential antiviral properties. This study investigated in vitro antiviral activity of oil extracted from the green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus, GLM) and low-molecular-weight (LMW) fucoidan from Undaria pinnatifida against three human viruses in mammalian cell systems. herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and SARS-CoV-2. These marine compounds were selected with the longer-term aim of evaluating their combination as a potential synergistic antiviral strategy. Methods: Antiviral efficacy was assessed using complementary assay platforms, including plaque reduction assays in mammalian cell systems and a lentiviral pseudovirus system delivering a bioluminescent reporter gene in HEK293/ACE2 cells pseudotyped with the SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein. Cytotoxicity was assessed in parallel, and the selectivity index (SI) was calculated as the ratio of CC50 to IC50 for each compound and virus tested. Results: GLM oil showed potential antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirus (SI > 6.20), with limited activity against RSV (SI > 3.48) and HSV-1 (SI > 2.28). In contrast, LMW fucoidan did not demonstrate antiviral activity against any of the tested viruses. Conclusions: These findings support further investigation of GLM-derived bioactive compounds as potential antiviral agents, including studies to elucidate their mechanisms of action and in vivo studies to confirm their antiviral efficacy. Combination studies were not pursued in the present work as both compounds require further optimisation individually; however, future studies should evaluate their combined antiviral potential, as synergistic or additive effects remain plausible.
