Habit Predicting Higher Education EFL Students’ Intention and Use of AI: A Nexus of UTAUT-2 Model and Metacognition Theory

With the emergence of AI technology, its adoption in higher education has become an interesting field for researchers. The present study explores the acceptance of AI for learning the English language by Pakistani EFL students using the UTAUT-2 and Metacognition theory. The UTAUT-2 questionnaire was adapted with minor changes to make it suitable for the EFL context. Data were collected from the English departments of the top ten general universities in Pakistan to make the findings generalizable. Another step taken to ensure generalizability was the sampling of 611 students randomly from both undergraduate (BS and ADP) and postgraduate (MPhil and PhD) programs studying in different semesters. PLS-SEM was employed for data analysis. In the first step, the PLS algorithm was run for the measurement model, which confirmed the reliability, validity, and fitness of the model. Second, the bootstrapping method was used for hypothesis testing. The findings reveal that six of the ten hypotheses for direct relationships are supported. Habit (0.489) was found to be the strongest contributor to BI, followed by PE (0.141), SI (0.100), and FC (0.093). Moreover, actual use behaviour was predicted by habit (0.325) instead of BI and FC. These findings are supported by metacognition theory, as the habit of AI seems to shape the metacognitive knowledge of EFL learners in place of traditional learning methods, and other factors seem to reinforce the metacognitive experience of using AI language. The study suggests implications for EFL experts, academia, and policymakers to strategically integrate AI into language learning by informing them of its potential benefits and risks. Full article

Introduction: The educational landscape has been expanded to disadvantaged and distant areas through online courses. These online courses have gained extensive interest yet there are limited studies available in the literature. The emergence of massive open online courses (MOOCs) has allowed sustainability educators to glimpse the light. Online education is gaining popularity and, with the introduction of MOOCs, would be beneficial for knowledge building and sharing, and the development of learned society. Objective: This study investigated the mediating (indirect) effects of media richness and user-based use motives on the extended UTAUT model, use behavior (UB), and actual use (AU) of MOOCs on health informatics and administration sustainability education among educators and students in Saudi higher learning institutions (HLIs). A theoretical model based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) and Channel Expansion Theory (CET) was used to investigate the factors that affect the adoption of MOOCs in health informatics and administration education. Methodology: A survey design approach was applied. Cross-sectional data were collected from health informatics educators and students from HLIs in Saudi Arabia. A non-probability convenience sampling technique was used for sampling. Data were collected online using Google Forms. A total of 145 completed questionnaires were used in the analysis. PLS-SEM(Version 4.1.1.2) was used for statistical analysis. To investigate the reliability and validity, a measurement model was developed and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted. To test the hypotheses, a structural model was run using bootstrapping, coefficients, standard errors (SE) t-values, p values, and lower and upper-level confidence intervals. Results/Findings: The findings were that system quality and user satisfaction is an important factor in the UTAUT model and the inclusion of media richness and user-based use motives significantly mediated between the expanded UTAUT model and the UB and AU of MOOCs. Moreover, media richness and user-based use motives were found to be dominant factors in the overall study model to predict use behavior and actual use of health informaticians in Saudi Arabia. Conclusions: The combination of these two theories i.e., the UTAUT and CET, can effectively enhance the adoption, use behavior, and actual use of MOOCs in the emerging field of health informatics in Saudi Arabia. This study aims to address a research gap by analyzing the role of technology adoption as a determinant of the circular economy in relation to sustainability-oriented innovation and environmental performance. This study uses an advanced structural equation modeling (SEM-PLS) approach to address methodological rigor issues, including multigroup analysis and bootstrap methods to ensure reliability and validity. Data were collected from 201 Indonesian SMEs, and 603 responses were collected and analyzed using structural equation modeling. The findings indicate that technology adoption contributes significantly to the circular economy and sustainability-oriented innovation but is insignificant to environmental performance. Furthermore, the circular economy and sustainability-oriented innovation are key to improving environmental performance. This study presents an advanced mediation model using serial mediation analysis with bias-corrected confidence intervals to ensure methodological robustness. This study develops a theoretical framework by integrating the natural resource-based view (NRBV), environmental concern theory, and stakeholder theory in the context of SMEs, providing a more comprehensive overview for understanding the mechanisms of environmental conservation. The results also highlighted the role of the circular economy and sustainability-oriented innovation as serial mediators in the relationship between technology adoption and environmental performance. In terms of theoretical implications, this study incorporates the natural resource-based view, environmental concern theory, and stakeholder theory to improve our understanding of environmental conservation. In terms of managerial contribution, the main implication for SME managers is to invest in sustainable practices by focusing on circular practices and improving the understanding of efforts to improve environmental performance. This study investigates the multidimensional aspects of energy poverty in Pakistan from 2000 to 2022, specifically evaluating the direct, indirect, and total effects of socioeconomic and environmental factors. We employed Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to examine the impacts of income, population, governance quality, energy intensity, fuel prices, and renewable energy consumption on energy poverty. The study further contributes by examining the mediating role of governance quality and developing the World Governance Indicators (WGI) Index. The findings indicate significant negative effects of energy intensity and renewable energy consumption on energy poverty. Conversely, population growth and income levels demonstrate positive effects, contradicting conventional economic development and energy access assumptions. Governance quality establishes direct and indirect effects that mediate most relationships between independent variables and energy poverty. Bootstrapping analysis confirms the significance of governance quality as a mediator. The model describes significant energy poverty variance with robust predictive relevance. This study emphasizes the need to adopt a comprehensive strategy to decrease Pakistan’s energy poverty by articulating socioeconomic, environmental, and governance factors. Our findings offer valuable information for policymakers to achieve UN Sustainable Development Goal 7, embarking on governance reforms, promoting sustainable growth, and enforcing investments in energy efficiency and renewable sources as Pakistan approaches the 2030 SDG 7 deadline. Environmental issues are gradually increasing due to increases in carbon emissions, overproduction, plastic use, the burning of fossil fuels, etc. Therefore, ecological sustainability is a primary concern for society and the upcoming generation. Considering this, the present research objective is to examine the factors influencing employee eco-friendly behavior (EEBH) and firm environmental performance (FEP). Cross-sectional data were accumulated from 403 employees working in casual dining restaurants in China and analyzed through partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS–SEM) approaches (i.e., PLS algorithm, bootstrapping, blindfolding, and PLS prediction). The findings support the significant effect of environmental concern (ENVC) on employee organizational commitment (EOC), employee job satisfaction (EJoS), and EEBH. In addition, EOC and EJoS directly and indirectly influence EEBH. Furthermore, EOC also mediates the link between ENVC and EJoS. Finally, the findings also show that EEBH stimulates environmental performance. By showing the links between these elements, it has been emphasized that EEBH is a precondition of good organizational productivity and how it contributes to enhancing the EJoS and overall firm’s health. It challenges managers to create a work environment that is conducive to sustainability for improved customer relations and a strong reputation for the organization in society. Full article

The industrialization process has led to environmental deterioration, which has created challenges for sustainable development. However, there is an increasing inclination to purchase green furniture as a sustainable form of furniture. Hence, investigating the determinants of consumers’ intention to purchase green furniture is beneficial for promoting the adoption of sustainable furniture. Previous research has examined the functional aspects of purchasing behavior using the theory of planned behavior (TPB), while giving less consideration to affective elements. This study aimed to investigate the factors that influence the intention of future users to purchase green furniture, explicitly focusing on emotional perception. This study utilized the PAD three-dimensional emotion model. A novel conceptual model was developed, drawing upon the findings of the literature review. This study employed the questionnaire method to collect data, resulting in 412 valid samples. The collected data were then analyzed and processed using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) in SmartPLS 3.0 software. Additionally, the mediating influence of the variables was examined using the bootstrap method. The results suggested that the perceived pleasure, arousal, and dominance all had a substantial influence on the beneficial effect of green furniture elements on purchase intention. Among these factors, pleasure (PP) had the strongest mediating effect on the relationship between green brand image (GBI) and purchase intention (PI). Arousal (PA) had the strongest mediating effect on the relationship between eco-innovation (EI) and purchase intention (PI). Dominance (PD) had the strongest mediating effect on the relationship between purchase customization (PC) and purchase intention (PI). Furthermore, this paper examined the disparities between the characteristics of green furniture and conventional furniture in terms of their ability to stimulate emotional responses and influence consumers’ intention to purchase. This study revealed that green features (GF) have a greater capacity to evoke emotional responses in consumers, consequently impacting their intention to purchase green furniture. The study’s findings have both theoretical implications and practical relevance. In theory, these findings enhance the theoretical framework of purchase intention for green furniture. In practice, they provide specific ideas and recommendations for green furniture companies to develop emotional marketing strategies. Full article

This research aims to develop a conceptual framework and propositions to establish and test the causal relationships between Industry 5.0 readiness (I5.0R), global value chain (GVC) participation, business competitiveness (BC), and sustainable business growth (SBG) of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This study focuses on Industry 5.0 readiness, evaluated through human-centricity, fairtrade practices, lean management, sustainability practices, and business competitiveness, measured by marketing, resources, production, and finance. Both constructs were developed and tested as higher-order constructs, while GVC participation and sustainable business growth were assessed as lower-order constructs. Data were collected from marine food processing SMEs in Thailand using a purposive sampling technique. This study tested and confirmed the content validity, construct validity, and reliability of both lower and higher-order models. Using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) with bootstrapping (n = 1000), the results indicated significant positive impacts of Industry 5.0 readiness on GVC participation, Industry 5.0 readiness on business competitiveness, GVC participation on business competitiveness, and business competitiveness on the sustainable business growth of SMEs. Additionally, business competitiveness was found to mediate the relationship between Industry 5.0 readiness and sustainable business growth. These findings contribute to the literature on Industry 5.0, GVCs, and SME business competitiveness, offering practical insights for SMEs and policymakers aiming to enhance sustainable growth through strategic readiness and competitiveness in Industry 5.0 practices. The implications and directions for further research in Industry 5.0 readiness of SMEs are presented. Full article

The allocation of funding for higher education typically focuses on competition in neoliberal mechanisms. Surprisingly, much less attention has been paid to considering the effect of fund allocations for sustainable development through public goods purposes in neoliberal contexts. This study aims to examine specific funding schemes and determine the influential factors impacting funding for teaching, research, and public goods transformation. Taking Taiwan’s Higher Education Sprout Project (HESP) as an example, we explored the effect of policy initiatives on public goods transformation towards sustainable development. The data were collected from the Ministry of Education and Scopus databases. First, a regression analysis was conducted to determine which factors influence the effect of funding allocations in academic institutes. Second, we used a logistic regression to detect the effects of the system and the sector. Third, we used partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) to explore the causal effects among the selected impact variables on expected outcomes. Finally, we used the bootstrap method to demonstrate the model’s robustness. Our study found that only diversity was shown in private technology groups receiving less HESP funding, while it did not widen the differences in the sector and system in the transformation process. Our findings suggest that funding allocations will not affect teaching and research based on sectors and systems. In contrast, this study demonstrates that transforming public goods through special funding can play a critical role in leading sustainable development in higher education. Full article

Background: Job crafting is a proactive behavior displayed by workers to modify the boundaries of their roles, adapting them to their own needs, which is positively associated with motivational processes and negatively associated with mechanisms that compromise well-being. Methods: Starting from this framework, the objective of this study is to assess the strategic role of job crafting in the relationship between job insecurity and work engagement, psychological well-being and emotional exhaustion, and also to specifically investigate how much age impacts these behaviors and the relationship between job crafting and employability. The hypotheses were explored using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and validated using 5000 bootstrap re-samples, differentiating the models by the type of contract and organization of origin. Results: The results confirm the crucial role of job crafting in improving individual well-being and increasing processes of higher expendability in the job market and its protective role against stress mechanisms. Conclusions: Therefore, the results highlight the potentially beneficial effects of job crafting interventions, which are capable of providing tools to facilitate individual and cultural growth. This study aims to explore the pivotal role of green inclusive leadership (GIL) in driving sustainability efforts in the hotel industry, guided by the social exchange theory (SET). The research centers on three core objectives: firstly, evaluating how GIL directly impacts green work engagement (GWE), green organizational identification (GOI), and green organizational citizenship behavior (GOCB); secondly, examining how GWE and GOI influence GOCB; and thirdly, investigating whether GWE and GOI act as mediators in the relationship between GIL and GOCB. This study gathered data via an online questionnaire, completed by 446 front-line employees in eco-conscious five-star Saudi Arabian hotels. This study employed PLS-SEM with bootstrapping techniques to scrutinize seven hypotheses, encompassing both direct and indirect connections among study variables. The findings underscore the significant, positive influence of GIL on employees’ GWE and GOI, motivating their active participation in GOCBs. Furthermore, GWE and GOI play pivotal roles in enhancing employees’ engagement in GOCBs. Notably, GWE and GOI emerge as substantial mediators in the relationship between GIL and GOCB. These insights carry significant practical implications, poised to strengthen GOCB and drive sustainability initiatives in the hotel industry. Full article

While facing environmental challenges and rising concerns around food security and equitable access to nutritious food, sustainable food practices (SFPs) have emerged as a crucial focus area for the restaurant industry. Hence, this study aims to investigate key drivers of promoting SFPs, including customers’ and stakeholders’ sustainable behaviors, governmental laws and regulations around sustainability, the commitment of restaurants to combat climate change, the financial and non-financial outcomes of adopting SFPs, and restaurants’ values and culture toward sustainability. In addition, it explores the power of promoting these practices in driving restaurants’ economic, environmental, and social performance. To achieve these objectives, an online survey was administered to restaurant owners and top managers interested in implementing these practices. Accordingly, eight hypotheses, which explored the direct relationships between this study’s variables, were tested using PLS-SEM with bootstrapping. Based on 221 valid responses, this study revealed that all proposed paths were significant and aligned with each hypothesis. Notably, sustainable behavior exhibited by customers and stakeholders had the greatest influence on promoting SFPs, followed by the values and culture of restaurants related to sustainability and restaurants’ commitment to combatting climate change. Additionally, promoting SFPs was a crucial predictor for enhancing restaurants’ economic, environmental, and social performance, respectively. Upon these findings, restaurant owners and top managers should build a solid framework for promoting SFPs in their establishments by focusing on these factors, thereby improving their overall economic, environmental, and social performance. Recently, social media marketing has become an effective tool for restaurants to gain visibility, increase customer engagement, and boost sales. Through social media marketing activities (SMMAs) including customization (CUST), entertainment (ENTR), trendiness (TRND), and interaction (INTR), restaurants can connect with their customers in a dynamic way that may affect their satisfaction and purchasing behavioral intention. Hence, this study primarily aims to empirically explore the individual influence of SMMAs namely CUST, ENTR, TRND, and INTR on social media followers’ satisfaction and purchase intention in a sample of casual-dining restaurants in Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, drawing on the Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) model, we also seek to investigate the influence of customer satisfaction as a mediating variable in the relationship between CUST-PI, ENTR-PI, TRND-PI, and INTR-PI. Furthermore, to examine the direct influence of CS on PI. In order to meet these objectives, an online survey was created to collect data from a convenience sample of restaurant social media followers. Data from 415 followers were analyzed using the PLS-SEM with a bootstrapping technique to confirm the research hypotheses. The findings of the study illustrated the significant positive effect of CUST, ENTR, and INTR on followers’ purchase intention, respectively. Trendy social media marketing activities did not significantly affect purchase intention. Additionally, CS partially mediated the relationships between CUST, ENTR, INTR, and PI but fully mediated the trendiness-purchase intention relationship. The results from this research can assist restaurant operators to leverage the benefits of social media more effectively by understanding how SMMAs influence customers’ purchase intentions and enhancing their understanding of how customer satisfaction can be used to capitalize on the benefits of social media. Social entrepreneurship has gained increasing attention as a means to address social problems, including poverty, in Nigeria. Poverty is a major challenge in Nigeria, with a poverty rate of over 40%. Poverty alleviation is critical to achieving sustainable development in the country. Social entrepreneurship can play a key role in addressing poverty by creating jobs, providing access to goods and services, and promoting economic growth. Hence, this study examines bolstering the impact of social entrepreneurship and poverty alleviation for sustainable development in Nigeria. The research focuses primarily on fostering economic, social, and environmental improvements, as well as improving people’s lives. Three hypotheses were formulated to help accomplish the primary objectives of the study. The Opportunity-Based Entrepreneurship Theory, Social Network Theory, and Schumpeterian Theory of Innovation were used to explain the objective of the study. In this study, a purposive sampling technique was used, and 300 copies of structured questionnaires were administered to selected social entrepreneurs of which 262 copies were retrieved and used for the analysis. The data were analyzed using structural and measurement models, and the path coefficient was determined using PLS-SEM. The significance level was calculated using the bootstrapping method. The results from the test of hypotheses showed that; the most significant predictor of poverty alleviation is social innovation (β = 0.376, p < 0.05), followed by the social value (β = 0.314, p < 0.05), and finally, social impact (β = 0.231, p < 0.05). This study concludes that social innovation is fundamental for empowering individuals and communities to lift themselves out of poverty and achieve long-term prosperity. The study recommends that to promote sustainable social entrepreneurship and poverty alleviation in Nigeria, the government can create policies and programs that support social innovation, such as providing access to funding, business training, and mentorship. The government can also collaborate with entrepreneurs and organizations to promote their initiatives and create a supportive ecosystem for social entrepreneurship. Full article

The paper aims to analyze the digital transformation process’s defining elements in the COVID-19 crisis. Starting from our main objective, which consists of a critical analysis of the defining elements of the digital transformation process in the conditions of the COVID-19 crisis, we formulate the following specific objectives: to analyze the contribution of external organizational factors to put into practice the new opportunities created by the organization’s digital transformation; to evaluate the impact of digital competencies on the digital transformation of organizations; and to analyze the role of new technologies in developing digital competencies. We used the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and the bootstrapped method to evaluate the model fit, and the model was tested by SmartPLS4 software. Our research is based on information from 203 employees with authority for decision making about the digital transformation strategy in their organizations undergoing a digital transformation process. Our findings revealed that organizations, regardless of size, profile, or field of activity, are affected by changes induced by new technologies and the crisis generated by COVID-19. Therefore, formulating a digital transformation strategy must aim to minimize the risks of obsolescence and maximize the results from exploiting new digital resources. However, our results do not prove that COVID-19 crises directly and positively influence the development of digital competencies. This leads us to conclude that developing these competencies is a continuous process unaffected by disruptive factors such as crises. Instead, the development of digital competencies is influenced by new technologies. Therefore, the COVID-19 crisis directly and positively influences organizations’ developing and implementing a digital transformation strategy and new technologies. The theoretical contribution of our research consists of an explanation of the role of perturbator factors, such as the crisis generated by COVID-19, in developing digital competencies and improving digital transformation. The practical contributions are dedicated to managers that should have a different approach to the negative phenomena that will be considered catalytic factors of the digital transformation and disruptive factors of the organizational climate. Over the past few years, great attention has been given to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences on employee psychological well-being (PWB), particularly in the hospitality industry. Like many aspects of human life, employee PWB is influenced by multiple factors. One of the factors that may affect employee PWB is transformational leadership (TLS). Accordingly, we aim through this study to empirically (1) examine the direct effect of transformational leadership on employee PWB and (2) investigate the potential independent and serial mediation effects of employee engagement (EEG) and job satisfaction (JS) on the TLS-PWB relationship after the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were gathered using an online questionnaire from a convenience sample of 403 front-line employees from five-star hotels in Saudi Arabia. The partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) with the bootstrapping technique was utilized to test the study hypotheses. Based on the demands–resources (JD-R) theory, the findings of this study reveal a significant positive effect of TLS on hotel employees’ PWB. Additionally, drawing on the stimulus–organism–response (S-O-R) model, the two main contributions of this study are: (1) EEG and JS serially and independently have a significant partial mediational effect on the TLS-PWB relationship among hotel employees, and (2) EEG has a greater impact on the TLS-PWB relationship as an intervening variable than the two other mediators (JS, as well as EEG and JS serially). Based on these findings, hotel management should mainly consider developing and encouraging TLS behavior among their managers to promote EEG and increase JS among their followers, which consequently enhances their PWB and alleviates negative psychological outcomes due to experiencing a disaster such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
