Rabies is a universally fatal viral disease that affects a wide variety of mammalian species, including carnivores and herbivores. While testing and confirmed reports in wild carnivores are common, comparatively less is known about this disease in wild herbivores. Between 2022 and 2024, nine white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Pennsylvania, USA were diagnosed with rabies. Eight (89%) presented with erratic neurologic signs and one was found dead. Evidence of chronic self-mutilation characterized by hair loss and thickened, hardened, and hyperpigmented skin was present on the head in seven cases (78%) and/or body or legs in two cases (22%), while two (22%) did not have any evidence of external lesions. Microscopically, lesions were like those in other mammalian species, with variably severe inflammation and abundant cytoplasmic inclusion bodies with associated antigen immunoreactivity. This case series highlights a common and characteristic gross lesion that can prompt caution and testing for rabies in deer and further expands understanding of this disease in an uncommonly diagnosed species. The advancements made in the mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) field have allowed for the generation of very large-scale data sets. These data are often interrogated by machine learning (ML), although storing and handling data sets of this size can be difficult. To aid impacted researchers, we seek to evaluate feature reduction strategies that will minimize the amount of data stored while still maintaining the ability to correctly classify the data. Two different feature selection strategies are tested on six different data sets, leveraging XGBoost as the machine learning algorithm. The study provides evidence that selecting features based on the greatest average abundance across all samples is best suited to scale down the feature set at a more modest trimming level, while selecting features based on statistical analysis via a Student’s t-test is better suited for a more aggressive trimming level. These trends were present regardless of training set size or cross-validation strategy. The results from this work provide insight into when these feature filtering steps can be used effectively and when another data reduction strategy, including not restricting the data set, should be considered. Background/Objectives: Spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA), or hereditary ataxia, is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder primarily affecting motor control and voluntary muscle coordination due to cerebellar or spinocerebellar dysfunction. While numerous genetic variants have been linked to SCA in both humans and dogs, some cases remain genetically unexplained. This study aimed to describe the clinical and pathological phenotype, and to identify the genetic basis, of an atypical form of SCA observed in a mixed-breed dog presenting with additional clinical signs beyond classic SCA. Methods: Clinical and postmortem examinations were performed to document neurological and systemic pathology. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) was conducted on the affected dog, and variant filtering was carried out using a control cohort of over 700 unaffected dog genomes to identify candidate variants. Results: In addition to classical SCA features, the affected dog exhibited retinal and optic nerve degeneration and severe, non-regenerative anemia. WGS did not reveal any known SCA-associated variants. Variant filtering identified a novel homozygous 4-base-pair frameshift deletion in CLPX (caseinolytic mitochondrial matrix peptidase chaperone subunit X) [XM_038580726.1:c.1723_1726del; chr30:g.29943285_29943288del]. This variant is predicted to cause a frameshift and premature stop codon within 17 amino acids, truncating approximately 6.64% of the protein. Conclusions: This is the first report associating a CLPX variant with SCA in any species. Given the gene’s high evolutionary conservation and known role in mitochondrial protein homeostasis, this finding may have implications for understanding CLPX-related neurodegeneration and anemia in both veterinary and human medicine. Residents in low-income multifamily housing often struggle to afford energy for essential needs such as heating, cooking, and electronics. Climate change may increase these energy demands, and high energy bills can reflect inefficiencies in a home’s systems or envelope. Improving the energy efficiency in low-income housing benefits both social justice and sustainability. However, there is limited information on the impact of energy upgrades in multifamily settings. This study examined the energy-related experiences of low-income families in public housing in Detroit, Michigan, who received energy-conserving measures (ECMs) such as efficient light bulbs, faucets, thermostats, and refrigerators in 2022. Thirty-nine residents completed surveys and provided energy usage data before and after the upgrades; twelve residents provided their hourly energy usage. Over 90% of residents reporting income information had an energy burden exceeding 6%, with higher energy expenses during colder months. While many residents appreciated the upgrades, quantitative evidence of reduced energy burdens was insufficient. Existing utility programs for multifamily residents typically offer minor upgrades but do not include larger appliance replacements or improvements to home insulation. To maximize energy efficiency for low-income families, thus promoting sustainability, more comprehensive programs and retrofits are necessary. Full article

Intracranial abscesses are a common cause of morbidity and mortality in neurologic free-ranging white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). These infections are typically attributed to Trueperella pyogenes and occur most often in adult males with concurrent antler and skull infections. A subset of intracranial abscesses in white-tailed deer are localized to the pituitary gland, with previously described reports in five white-tailed deer. In this case series, five additional free-ranging white-tailed deer in Pennsylvania were diagnosed with pituitary abscesses at necropsy. Two cases were female deer, and four cases were yearling or juvenile deer. Two cases presented with conjunctivitis and keratitis due to extension of pituitary abscesses into the retrobulbar and peri-orbital spaces. One case had a concurrent liver abscess. This case series demonstrates a unique clinical presentation of keratitis and conjunctivitis and emphasizes the potentially unique pathogenesis for pituitary abscesses compared to other intracranial abscesses described in white-tailed deer. This review explores the concept of futility timeouts and the use of traumatic brain injury (TBI) as an independent predictor of the futility of resuscitation efforts in severely bleeding trauma patients. The national blood supply shortage has been exacerbated by the lingering influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on the number of blood donors available, as well as by the adoption of balanced hemostatic resuscitation protocols (such as the increasing use of 1:1:1 packed red blood cells, plasma, and platelets) with and without early whole blood resuscitation. This has underscored the urgent need for reliable predictors of futile resuscitation (FR). As a result, clinical, radiologic, and laboratory bedside markers have emerged which can accurately predict FR in patients with severe trauma-induced hemorrhage, such as the Suspension of Transfusion and Other Procedures (STOP) criteria. However, the STOP criteria do not include markers for TBI severity or transfusion cut points despite these patients requiring large quantities of blood components in the STOP criteria validation cohort. Yet, guidelines for neuroprognosticating patients with TBI can require up to 72 h, which makes them less useful in the minutes and hours following initial presentation. We examine the impact of TBI on bleeding trauma patients, with a focus on those with coagulopathies associated with TBI. This review categorizes TBI into isolated TBI (iTBI), hemorrhagic isolated TBI (hiTBI), and polytraumatic TBI (ptTBI). Through an analysis of bedside parameters (such as the proposed STOP criteria), coagulation assays, markers for TBI severity, and transfusion cut points as markers of futilty, we suggest amendments to current guidelines and the development of more precise algorithms that incorporate prognostic indicators of severe TBI as an independent parameter for the early prediction of FR so as to optimize blood product allocation. For patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs), arrythmias such as atrial fibrillation (AF) can be detected and actions taken to rapidly assess and initiate treatment where appropriate. Actions include timely initiation of anticoagulation, review of blood pressure, and optimization of cholesterol/lipids to prevent unfavorable outcomes, such as stroke and other cardiovascular complications. Delays to initiating anticoagulation can have devastating consequences. We sought to implement a virtual clinic, where a pharmacist reviews patient referrals from a CIED clinic after detecting AF from the CIED. Anticoagulation choice is determined by patient-specific factors, and a shared patient–provider decision to start oral anticoagulation is made. In addition, blood pressure readings and medications are assessed with lipid-lowering therapies for optimization. A total of 315 patients have been admitted through this clinic and anticoagulated over a two-year span; in addition, 322 successful interventions were made for optimization of cardiac therapy. Rapid initiation of anticoagulation within five days of referral was likely to have reduced unfavorable outcomes, such as stroke and other cardiovascular optimizations, leading to improved patient outcomes. Pyrus calleryana was intentionally introduced to North America from east Asia in the early 1900s as rootstock for the edible pear tree, Pyrus communis. It was identified as an ideal decorative, agricultural, and horticultural tree because of its small stature, early spring flowering, fire blight resistance and inoffensive fruits. P. calleryana escaped cultivation and is now considered an invasive species, typically found on roadsides, prairies, and fields. The aim of this study is to characterize pollinator community diversity from planted and feral trees, as well as diversity as it compares to expected communities derived from research-grade iNaturalist observations. Pollinators were collected by hand on planted and feral P. calleryana trees in April 2018–2022. A total of 14 taxa of insect pollinator were collected from P. calleryana flowers, with similar levels of diversity of pollinator taxa collected from planted and feral trees, and Apis mellifera and Andrena spp. the most common taxa observed. The sampled pollinator community did not differ from the expected pollinator communities generated using the iNaturalist data on either the planted or feral P. calleryana. Full article

The relationship between women and classical antiquity, its texts, artefacts, and study, has been fraught to say the least; the discipline of Classics has often been defined by the exclusion of women, in terms of their education and their ability to contribute to debates more generally. However, we are currently in the middle of an astonishing period when women are laying more of a claim to the discipline than ever before. This article examines three recent novels by women which take on the cultural weight of the Homeric epics, Iliad and Odyssey, to explore the possibilities of a ‘new song’ that foregrounds female characters. The novels experiment with different narrative voices and are self-conscious about the practices of story-telling and of bardic song. Their awareness of their challenge to and contest with Homeric tradition renders their ‘new songs’ fragile as well as precious. Full article
