This study elucidates Luke’s analytical strategies for writing history in the book of Acts through comparison with the Roman historian Sallust, focusing on how both authors construct narratives of leadership. Although Sallust and Luke are rarely compared in New Testament scholarship due to conventional boundaries such as language, religion, and historical context, both authors deploy similar interpretive practices drawn from the broader milieu of Greco-Roman historiography. Sallust’s Bellum Catilinae presents Cicero as an ineffective leader who, despite suppressing Catiline’s conspiracy in 63 BCE, could not save Rome from moral decline. Conversely, Luke in the book of Acts, particularly in the Miletus Speech (Acts 20:17–38), depicts Paul as a leader whose tireless pastoral oversight caused the rise of Gentile Christianity across the Roman Empire. This comparative study reveals that Luke, like Sallust, shapes the past not merely by reporting events but by analyzing their significance through interpretive frameworks of leadership. Full article

Background/Objectives: Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are at a significant risk for depressive and anxiety disorders, including severe depression. The use of virtual reality (VR) during hemodialysis can significantly impact psychological well-being and thus overall quality of life. The aim of the study was to assess the effects of VR therapy undertaken by hemodialysis (HD) patients on depression, anxiety, perceived self-efficacy and life satisfaction. Methods: Hemodialysis (HD) patients were recruited from the Dialysis Centre at St. Luke’s Hospital in Bolesławiec. Group I (experimental EG) included 16 HD patients, and Group II (control CG) included 22 HD patients (no VR session). The EG used VR for one month (maximum 14 sessions); the CG was the same group of patients assessed over a one-month period prior to the intervention. VR therapy took place at the beginning of dialysis, three times a week for one month. A personal questionnaire, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES) and the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) were used. Results: In the group of patients undergoing VR therapy, a significant reduction in the level of anxiety, depression and stress was observed, as well as a significant increase in life satisfaction and self-efficacy levels compared to the control group. Conclusions: Undertaking VR therapy during dialysis for patients with ESRD is beneficial, improves mood, satisfaction with life, and perceived self-efficacy, and reduces anxiety, but multi-center studies are needed on a larger group of patients. Placental abruption (PA) without vaginal bleeding is known to be associated with severe outcomes when compared to symptomatic cases; the presence of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) is an additional negative prognostic factor. According to guidelines, severe HDP are indications for prompt delivery after maternal–fetal stabilization. Considering gestational age, parity and clinical obstetric examination, the induction of labor should be prioritized to avoid additional risks associated with cesarean section. However, since only a minority of cases of PA may be detected by ultrasonography (US), findings consistent with this suspicion should contribute to the establishment of an appropriate mode of delivery. We present two cases affected by severe HDP, eclampsia and HELLP syndrome, admitted to St. Luke Catholic Hospital, Wolisso, Ethiopia. In both cases, obstetric point-of-care (POC) US revealed a live premature fetus and a solid heterogeneous placental mass, raising the suspicion of concealed placental abruption. To expedite delivery, cesarean section was promptly offered. PA was confirmed in both cases; the first had stillbirth and postpartum hemorrhage, while the second ended up with healthy mother and newborn. In conclusion, POC-US imaging could play a role in optimizing delivery mode and timing for patients with HDP in low-resourced settings. Additional research is warranted to determine the impact of this technique in the management of obstetric emergencies. Full article

The representation of atmospheric phenomena and, in particular, clouds was a prominent theme for painters during the transition from the eighteenth to the nineteenth centuries. During this period, under the influence of rationalism and encyclopedism, Luke Howard’s cloud classification (1803) was proposed, gaining followers among scientists and artists of the time. Among the latter, Goethe was instrumental, as he intensely promoted this cloud classification, even dedicating his own poems and drawings to it. From then on, some painters depicted cloud studies following the academic principles recommended by Goethe. Caspar David Friedrich did not adopt these principles and depicted clouds as bodies endowed with freedom and feeling, as fragments of soul. The work of P. H. de Valenciennes played a prominent role in this approach; it was translated into German and became a reference manual for Romantic landscape painting. This paper addresses the scientific and cultural context of that historical moment, studies the importance of the landscape, and its aerial aspect, in the painting of the time and details the role of Friedrich as a singular author of German Romanticism, who did not want to participate in the academic ideas of representing clouds, since the sky was, for this painter, a symbol of the transcendent. In this article, I argue that the command of Jesus in Luke 12:22–34 not to be anxious and afraid are supported by exegetical clues from the text and findings in anxiety recovery research. I will argue that the imperatives of Luke 12:22–34 are not intended to be alienating but instructive with regard to where we put our attention and how we handle fear. Moreover, I will demonstrate that these words are not the fruit of a detached theologian or an abstract, impractical encouragement but instead the wisdom of someone familiar with the struggles of life, particularly that of first-century Jewish Palestine. Such is a wisdom that can be drawn upon today, especially for those who struggle with anxiety. The research methodology in this article is interdisciplinary, employing theology, exegesis, and psychology. Full article

Anorexia nervosa is among the most lethal psychiatric conditions. Online pro-anorexia (“pro-ana”) communities may frame starvation and restriction in moral or spiritual terms. This study explored how pro-ana discourse on X (formerly Twitter) encodes values, spirituality, and identity through language, with attention to clinical practice. A dataset of 2396 English-language tweets (2020–2025) was collected using dual criteria (pro-ana hashtags plus eating-disorder keywords). Only U.S.-based English tweets were included to maintain linguistic and cultural coherence with LIWC-22 norms and counseling frameworks developed in U.S. contexts. Tweets were separated into three corpora (full, hashtags, and tweet bodies) and analyzed using Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count 2022 (LIWC-22), supplemented with custom spirituality and pro-ana dictionaries, and keyword/keyness analysis against a 36-billion-token web reference corpus. Religious language appeared consistently higher in hashtags compared with tweets and Twitter norms. Tweets contained more authenticity and self-disclosure, while hashtags functioned as collective markers of identity and practice. Body and food terms were strongly elevated, and affiliation terms appeared comparatively suppressed. Keyness analysis identified distinctive items such as prayer fast, fasting prayer (Luke), OMAD fast, hunger hurt, and I’m punching, illustrating how sacred, cultural, and diet-related slogans were combined within pro-ana discourse. Pro-ana rhetoric may function as a sacralized identity frame that can provide existential meaning to disordered practices. These findings contribute to behavioral science by highlighting how online communities linguistically construct health-related identities and values. They also suggest that effective clinical interventions should address eating disorders not only at behavioral and cognitive levels but also at the level of values and spirituality. Full article

Background: Undernutrition is a major public health concern, accounting for nearly half of global under-five mortalities and leading to serious long-term consequences for those who survive. Most nutritional screening programs give priority to acute undernutrition (wasting). The co-presence of chronic undernutrition (stunting) has been shown to have the highest risk of mortality. To date, few studies have assessed outpatient treatment outcomes of children with wasting + stunting (WaSt), with some inconsistencies in results and only one study having investigated the outcome of patients requiring hospitalization. The aim of the present study is to investigate the impact of stunting on the outcomes of severely wasted children admitted for inpatient treatment in an Ethiopian referral hospital. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted to compare treatment outcomes (length of hospital stay, weight gain, recovery rate, readmission rate) of wasted and WaSt children admitted to “St. Luke Catholic Hospital and College of Nursing and Midwifery” between January 2018 and February 2023. Results: The analysis comprised 616 children aged 6–60 months and stunting was diagnosed in 559 children (90.7%). Children with stunting had a longer length of stay (median difference 3 days, 95% confidence interval 0 to 5; p = 0.03) and improved weight gain (median difference 4 g/kg/day, 95% confidence interval 0 to 4; p = 0.002) compared to children without stunting. Discharge rate (p = 0.99) and readmission rate (p = 0.25) were not statistically different between children with or without stunting. Conclusions: Stunting was found to be present in most children admitted for severe wasting to the Stabilization Centers in a sub-Saharan setting. Stunting was associated with longer hospitalization and greater weight gain, but discharge and readmission rate were comparable between children with or without stunting. Full article

Staphylococcus aureus colonizes the nasal and pharyngeal mucosa of a considerable proportion of the human population, representing a relevant reservoir for the dissemination of antibiotic resistance. This study aimed to determine the prevalence, antibiotic resistance profiles, and molecular characterization of S. aureus strains isolated from the nose and pharynx of healthy individuals of Mexico City, Mexico. Nasal and pharyngeal swabs were taken from 1777 individuals aged between 1 and 99 years. Microbiological identification, antibiotic susceptibility testing, virulence gene detection, SCCmec typing, and spa-typing allowed the characterization of 1459 strains. S. aureus colonization was found in 59.7% of the population, with more of these strains being found in the pharynx than in the nose. MRSA constituted 9.25% of the strains, with a predominance of strains with SCCmec types IV and IVa. The most frequent resistance of S. aureus strains was to penicillin (87.6%), clindamycin (43.4%) and erythromycin (27.2%), with no statistical differences regarding the anatomical sites of isolation. The most frequently found virulence genes were lukE-D, icaA, sdrC, coa, and gyrA. Sixty-two spa-types were identified, and t-189 was the most common. These findings reflect a high colonization rate and genetic diversity, highlighting the importance of considering both anatomical sites in S. aureus surveillance studies. Full article

This article critically analyses the use of generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI)—specifically, the DALL·E system within the ChatGPT-4o environment—for creating visualisations of biblical scenes for teaching purposes. As part of a case study examining the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan (Mt 3:13–17; cf. Mark 1:9–11; Luke 3:21–22; John 1:31, 34) and the Last Supper (Mt 26:17–30; cf. Mark 14:12–16; Luke 22:7–13), four AI-generated images are analysed. Two were created using general, non-specific prompts, while the other two were based on more precise queries containing references to Catholic symbolism and the images’ intended educational use. A comparison of these variants reveals a lack of theological depth and symbolic oversimplification in AI-generated images, as well as a tendency to reproduce Western cultural stereotypes. Despite their aesthetic appeal and quick availability, these images do not reflect the complexity of the biblical or spiritual contexts of the scenes depicted. This study aims to evaluate the theological, symbolic, and pedagogical value of AI-generated images and to provide practical recommendations for their responsible use in Bible didactics. In conclusion, the authors argue that GenAI can support biblical teaching when used consciously, critically, and reflectively. Full article

Some studies have pointed to the Jewish background of the prayer that, according to the gospels of Matthew and Luke, Jesus taught his disciples. However, the formulations of LP’s words do not necessarily presuppose the conclusion of the formation of Jewish prayers and do not necessarily presuppose a unidirectional influence of Jewish prayers on the formation of LP. This prayer and its “midrash” in John 17 may have influenced the formulation and final formation of some Jewish prayers. The differences between these prayers may indicate the mutual influence that, in some cases, took place throughout the history of their formation. This reciprocity may be due to the intention to establish and define the differences between the religious groups of Judaic origin that inherited these prayers and between the communities that recited them. The crystallization of biblical themes in these prayers highlights the common heritage of these groups and a different understanding of the fulfilment of God’s word in relation to the coming of his kingdom. While this process, characterized by a conflict of interpretations, took place “within Judaism,” it also led to the parting of the ways of Judeo-Christians from the Synagogue. Full article

The Traditio Apostolica presents, within the context of Christian baptism, first the water baptism accompanied by a profession of faith, followed by prayer with the laying on of hands. The purpose of this initiation process is the forgiveness of sins, which is more strongly implied in the water rite, and the gift of the Spirit, which is implied in the laying on of hands. This sequence of baptism and laying on of hands, in connection with faith and Spirit reception, is also evident in Acts 19:1–7. Apart from Acts 8:5–25, however, it is the only passage that links baptism with laying on of hands followed by Spirit reception. Moreover, it is the only instance of a rebaptism within the Lukan double work. The focus of this article is not primarily on the question of the historicity of this rite during the New Testament period but on a narratological-intratextual analysis of the relationship between baptism and Spirit reception, that is, to what extent the reader, against the background of the preceding narrative in Luke-Acts, is led to an understanding of this relationship and its significance for becoming a Christian. The article argues that faith plays a decisive role in the Christian initiation process. Full article

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) colonizes the nasal cavities of both healthy individuals and patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) with (CRSwNP) and without (CRSsNP) nasal polyps. Treatment-resistant S. aureus biofilms and intracellular persistence are common in CRS patients, requiring the expression of specific virulence factor genes to transition into these forms. We hypothesized that S. aureus isolates from non-diseased controls, CRSsNP patients, and CRSwNP patients would exhibit distinct virulence factor patterns contributing to persistence and intracellular survival in CRS patients. Nasal swabs from seventy-seven individuals yielded S. aureus cultures in eight non-diseased controls, eight CRSsNP patients, and five CRSwNP patients. Whole-genome sequencing analyzed stress, antimicrobial resistance, and virulence genes, including plasmids and prophages. Four virulence factor gene patterns emerged: a core set (hlgA, icaC, hlgB, hlgC, hld, and aur) present in all isolates, and accessory sets, including the enterotoxin gene cluster (seo, sem, seu, sei, and sen) and a partial/complete invasive virulence factor set (splE, splA, splB, lukE, and lukD) (p = 0.001). CRSwNP isolates exhibited incomplete carriage of the core set, with frequent loss of scn, icaC, and hlgA (p < 0.05). These findings suggest that S. aureus has clusters of virulence factors that may act in concert to support the survival and persistence of the bacteria, resulting in enhanced pathogenicity. This may manifest clinically with resistant disease and refractoriness to antibiotics. Full article

This article investigates Jesus’s identity in the Synoptic Gospels by examining the Gospels’ literary features. I take a narrative approach to determine how the evangelists, in unique and shared ways, reveal to their audiences who Jesus is. Certain literary features in the evangelists’ texts provide an answer to Jesus’s question, “Who do you say that I am?” (Matt 16:15; Mark 8:29; Luke 9:20). For Mark, Jesus is “Christ” and “Son of God” (Mark 1:1); as the plot unfolds, these terms become guideposts suggesting that characters in the Gospel (and by extension the audience, too) come to a deeper understanding of who Jesus is. For Matthew, the good news of Jesus commences with the relationship between Jesus and Israel’s past through figures like David and Abraham. By observing how Matthew characterizes Jesus in the Gospel, the audience learns that Jesus stands in continuity with Israel. Finally, Luke starts his account with a focus not on figures from Israel’s history, but rather on its institutions, like the temple and the priesthood (see Luke 1:5, 9). This article investigates the concept of hospitality (xenia) in the ancient Mediterranean world and its relevance to contemporary migrant communities. To bridge the gap between ancient texts and modern experiences, we utilize a combined lens of contextual biblical hermeneutics and migration theory to analyze the Parable of the Returning Son (Luke 15:11–32), highlighting the inherent tensions and complexities of welcoming the stranger. Ethnographic research among Latin Pentecostal migrant congregations in the Nordic countries reveals how these communities embody xenia through tangible acts of welcome, risk-taking, and prodigal hospitality. This analysis demonstrates the vital role of hospitality in fostering community building within contexts of mobility. Furthermore, the concept of xenia helps address the limitations of applying modern migration theories directly to ancient contexts by providing a framework for understanding the continuity and evolution of hospitality practices across time and cultures. Background/Objective: Tedizolid (TZD), an oxazolidinone, causes fewer adverse events than linezolid (LZD). However, studies on the long-term efficacy and safety of TZD, particularly in patients with hematological malignancies (HMs), remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate the safety of long-term TZD use in Japanese patients, including those with HM. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients aged 15 years and older who received TZD treatment at St. Luke’s International Hospital between 2018 and 2023. Patient demographics, treatment duration, adverse events, and clinical outcomes were analyzed. Results: Data from 35 patients and 40 treatment episodes were analyzed, including 13 episodes in patients with HM, of whom 65.0% were male, with a median age of 69.0 years (IQR: 24.5 years). The median treatment duration was 13.5 days (IQR: 46.8), with a maximum of 203 days. TZD was switched from other anti-MRSA agents in 82.5% of cases, including 42.5% from LZD. One patient discontinued TZD due to liver dysfunction, attributed to concomitant medication use. Clinical cure rates were significantly higher in the non-HM group compared to the HM group (88.9% vs. 38.5%). The 90-day mortality rate differed notably between the HM and non-HM groups (69.2% and 3.7%). Despite 100% microbiological eradication, infection-related mortality rates were 3.7% in the non-HM and 38.5% in the HM group. No reported cases of optic neuritis, Clostridioides difficile colitis, or major bleeding; Conclusions: TZD appears to be safe for long-term use, regardless of HM status, with no major complications observed in this cohort.
