This article focuses on the fire safety risks associated with conventional glass–aluminum façades—with a particular focus on stick and unitized curtain walling systems—providing an overview of possible fire spread mechanisms, considering the role of the curtain wall in maintaining compartmentation at the spandrel zone. First, it analyzes some of the relevant requirements of different European building regulations. Then, it provides a test evidence-based critical analysis of the gaps and loopholes in the relevant fire resistance standard for partial curtain wall configurations (EN 1364-4), where the evaluation of the propagation within the façade system is not necessarily considered in the fire-resistant spandrel zone. Finally, it presents a proposal for addressing these gaps in the form of a theoretical concept for a new test configuration and additional assessment criteria. This is followed by an initial experimental analysis of the concept. The standard testing campaign showed that temperature rise in mullions can exceed 180 °C after 30 min if limiting measures are not considered in the façade design. However, this can be only detected if framing is in the non-exposed area of the sample, being part of the evaluation surface. Meanwhile, differences are detected between the results from standard and new assessment criteria in the new configuration proposed, including a more rapid temperature rise for framing elements (207 K in a second level mullion at minute 90) than for the common non-exposed assessment surface of the sample (172 K at the same time) in cases where cavities are not protected. Accordingly, the proposed configuration successfully detected vertical temperature transfer within mullions, which can remain undetected in standard EN 1364-4 tests, highlighting the potential for fire spread even in EI120-rated assemblies. Sensing transparent objects has many applications in human daily life, including robot navigation and grasping. However, this task presents significant challenges due to the unpredictable nature of scenes that extend beyond/behind transparent objects, particularly the lack of fixed visual patterns and strong background interference. This paper aims to solve the transparent object segmentation problem by leveraging the intrinsic global modeling capabilities of transformer architectures. We design a Query Parsing Module (QPM) that innovatively formulates segmentation as a dictionary lookup problem, differing fundamentally from conventional pixel-wise mechanisms, e.g., via attention-based prototype matching, and a set of learnable class prototypes as query inputs. Based on QPM, we propose a high-performance transformer-based end-to-end segmentation model, Transparent Object Segmentation through Query (TOSQ). TOSQ’s encoder is based on the Segformer’s backbone, and its decoder consists of a series of QPM modules, which progressively refine segmentation masks by the proposed QPMs. TOSQ achieves state-of-the-art performance on the Trans10K-V2 dataset (76.63% mIoU, 95.34% Acc), with particularly significant gains in challenging categories like windows (+23.59%) and glass doors (+11.22%), demonstrating its superior capability in transparent object segmentation. To meet the rapid maneuverability and lightweight demands of micro-nano satellites, a space micro solid thruster using 3D-printed short glass fiber reinforced polyamide 6 (PA6GF) composites was developed. Thruster shells with wall thicknesses of 4, 3, and 2.5 mm were designed, and ground ignition tests were conducted to monitor chamber pressure and shell temperature. Compared with conventional metallic thrusters, PA6GF composites have exhibited excellent thermal insulation and sufficient mechanical strength. Under 8 MPa and 2773 K ignition conditions, the shell thickness was reduced to 2.5 mm and could withstand pressures up to 10.37 MPa. These results indicate that PA6GF composites are well-suited for space micro solid thrusters with inner diameters of 15–70 mm, offering new possibilities for lightweight space propulsion system design. Semi-flexible pavement (SFP) is a durable and cost-effective alternative to conventional rigid and flexible pavement and is formed by permeating an open-graded asphalt (OGA) layer with high-fluidity cement grout. The degradation of SFP mattresses due to fuel oil spills can result in significant maintenance costs. Incorporating glass waste (GW) into the construction of SFPs offers an eco-friendly solution, helping to reduce repair costs and environmental impact by conserving natural resources and minimizing landfill waste. The main objective of this research is to investigate the mechanical performance and fuel oil resistance of SFP composites containing different levels of glass aggregate (GlaSFlex composites). Fine glass aggregate (FGA) was replaced with fine virgin aggregate at levels of 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% by mass. The results indicated the feasibility of utilizing FGA as a total replacement (100%) for fine aggregate in the OGA structural layer of SFPs. At 100% FGA, the composite exhibited excellent mechanical performance and durability, including a compressive strength of 8.93 MPa, a Marshall stability exceeding 38 kN, and a stiffness modulus of 19,091 MPa. Furthermore, the composite demonstrated minimal permanent deformation (0.04 mm), a high residual stability of 94.7%, a residual compressive strength of 83.3%, and strong resistance to fuel spillage with a mass loss rate of less than 1%, indicating excellent durability. This study investigates the mechanical properties of ABS parts fabricated via used deposition modeling (FDM) through integrated experimental and numerical approaches. ABS resin was used as the experimental material, and tensile tests were conducted using a universal testing machine. Finite element analysis (FEA) was performed via ANSYS 2021 to simulate stress deformation behavior, with key parameters including a gauge length of 10 mm (pre-stretching) and printing temperature gradients. The results show that the specimen exhibited a maximum tensile force of 7.3 kN, upper yield force of 3.7 kN, and lower yield force of 3.2 kN, demonstrating high strength and toughness. The non-proportional elongation reached 0.06 (6%), and the quantified enhancement multiple of AM relative to traditional manufacturing was 1.1, falling within the reasonable range for glass fiber-reinforced or specially formulated ABS. FEA results validated the experimental data, showing that the material underwent 15 mm of plastic deformation before fracture, consistent with ABS’s ductile characteristics. Full article

Chemically strengthened glass is widely used for its remarkable fracture strength, mechanical performance, and scratch resistance. Assessing its hardness is crucial to evaluating improvements from chemical tempering. However, conventional methods like Vickers hardness tests are destructive, altering the sample surface. This study presents a novel, rapid, and nondestructive testing (NDT) approach by correlating the nonlinear refractive index (n2) with surface hardness. Using ultrafast laser pulses, we measured the n2 cross-section via the nonlinear ellipse rotation (NER) signal in Gorilla®-type glass subjected to ion exchange (Na+ by K+). A microscope objective lens provided a penetration resolution of ≈5.5 μm, enabling a localized NER signal analysis. We demonstrate a correlation between the NER signal and hardness, offering a promising pathway for advanced, noninvasive characterization. This approach provides a reliable alternative to traditional destructive techniques, with potential applications in industrial quality control and material science research. Full article

In order to cope with the emergence of energy conservation and consumption reduction initiatives, we used an acrylic emulsion (as the adhesive), combined with silica aerogel (SA) and hollow glass microsphere (HGM) fillers, to synthesize thermal insulation coatings, which were found to have low thermal conductivity and excellent thermal insulation properties. These waterborne coatings are environmentally friendly and were synthesized without organic solvents. Comprehensive testing verified that the coatings met practical requirements. Specifically, the addition of 18% SA resulted in minimal thermal conductivity (0.0433 W/m·K), the lowest density (0.177 g/cm3), as well as a reduced gross calorific value. At a heating surface temperature of 200 °C, the 5 mm coating’s cooling surface temperature was 108.7 °C, yielding a 91.3 °C temperature difference and demonstrating remarkable thermal insulation performance. Furthermore, the coatings showed favorable results in terms of water resistance, corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and adhesion, achieving satisfactory engineering standards. In this work, the influence of different contents of SA on various properties of the coating was studied, with the aim of providing a reference for the modulation of the comprehensive performance of SA thermal insulation coatings. In this study, the optimal design of the central pipe in a middle-deep geothermal heat pump (MD-GHP) system is studied using the response surface method to improve the system’s coefficient of performance (COP) and operational reliability. Firstly, a model describing the energy transfer and conversion mechanisms of the MD-GHP system, incorporating unsteady heat transfer in the central pipe, is established and validated using field test data. Secondly, taking the inner diameter, wall thickness, and effective thermal conductivity of the central pipe as design variables, the effects of these parameters on the COP of a 2700 m deep MD-GHP system are analyzed and optimized via the response surface method. The resulting optimal parameters are as follows: an inner diameter of 88 mm, a wall thickness of 14 mm, and an effective thermal conductivity of 0.2 W/(m·K). Based on these results, a composite central pipe composed of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), silica aerogels, and glass fiber tape is designed and fabricated. The developed pipe achieves an effective thermal conductivity of 0.13 W/(m·K) and an axial tensile force of 29,000 N at 105 °C. Compared with conventional PE and vacuum-insulated pipes, the composite central pipe improves the COP by 11% and 7%, respectively. This study proposes an optimization-based design approach for central pipe configuration in MD-GHP systems and presents a new composite pipe with enhanced thermal insulation and mechanical performance. Fiber–aerogel composites have gained significant attention as high-performance thermal insulation materials due to their unique microstructure, which suppresses conductive, convective, and radiative heat transfer. At room temperature, silica aerogels in particular exhibit ultralow thermal conductivity (<0.02 W/m·K), which is two to three times lower than that of still air (0.026 W/m·K). Their brittle skeleton and high infrared transparency, however, restrict how well they insulate, particularly at high temperatures (>300 °C). Incorporating microscale fibers into the aerogel matrix enhances mechanical strength and reduces radiative heat transfer by increasing scattering and absorption. For instance, it has been demonstrated that adding glass fibers reduces radiative heat transmission by around 40% because of increased infrared scattering. This review explores the fundamental mechanisms governing radiative heat transfer in fiber–aerogel composites, emphasizing absorption, scattering, and extinction coefficients. We discuss recent advancements in fiber-reinforced aerogels, focusing on material selection, structural modifications, and predictive heat transfer models. Recent studies indicate that incorporating fiber volume fractions as low as 10% can reduce the thermal conductivity of composites by up to 30%, without compromising their mechanical integrity. Key analytical and experimental methods for determining radiative properties, including Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and numerical modeling approaches, are examined. The emissivity and transmittance of fiber–aerogel composites have been successfully measured using FTIR spectroscopy; tests show that fiber reinforcement at high temperatures reduces emissivity by about 15%. We conclude by outlining the present issues and potential avenues for future research to optimize fiber–aerogel composites for high-temperature applications, including energy-efficient buildings (where long-term thermal stability is necessary), electronics thermal management systems, and aerospace (where temperatures may surpass 1000 °C), with a focus on improving the materials’ affordability and scalability for industrial applications. This study investigates the effects of repeated mechanical recycling on the structural, thermal, mechanical, and aesthetic properties of poly(butylene succinate) (PBS), a commercially available bio-based and biodegradable aliphatic polyester. PBS production scraps were subjected to five consecutive recycling cycles through semi-industrial extrusion compounding followed by injection molding to simulate realistic mechanical reprocessing conditions. Melt mass-flow rate (MFR) analysis revealed a progressive increase in melt fluidity. Initially, the trend of viscosity followed the melt flow rate; however, increasing the reprocessing number (up to 5) resulted in a partial recovery of viscosity, which was caused by chain branching mechanisms. The phenomenon was also confirmed by data of molecular weight evaluation. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) confirmed the thermal stability of the polymer, with minimal shifts in glass transition, crystallization, and degradation temperatures during the reprocessing cycles. Tensile tests revealed a slight reduction in strength and stiffness, but an increase in elongation at break, indicating improved ductility. Impact resistance declined moderately from 8.7 to 7.3 kJ/m2 upon reprocessing; however, it exhibited a pronounced reduction to 1.8 kJ/m2 at −50 °C, reflecting brittle behavior under sub-ambient conditions. Despite these variations, PBS maintained excellent color stability (ΔE < 1), ensuring aesthetic consistency while retaining good mechanical and thermal properties. Full article

Proper nutrition is a fundamental aspect to maintaining overall health and well-being, influencing both physical and social aspects of human life; an unbalanced or inadequate diet can lead to various nutritional deficiencies and chronic health conditions. In today’s fast-paced world, monitoring nutritional intake has become increasingly important, particularly for those with specific dietary needs. While smartphone-based applications using image recognition have simplified food tracking, they still rely heavily on user interaction and raise concerns about practicality and privacy. To address these limitations, this paper proposes a novel, compact spectroscopic sensing platform for automatic beverage recognition. The system utilizes the AS7265x commercial sensor to capture the spectral signature of beverages, combined with a K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) machine learning algorithm for classification. The approach is designed for integration into everyday objects, such as smart glasses or cups, offering a noninvasive and user-friendly alternative to manual tracking. Through optimization of both the sensor configuration and KNN parameters, we identified a reduced set of four wavelengths that achieves over 96% classification accuracy across a diverse range of common beverages. This demonstrates the potential for embedding accurate, low-power, and cost-efficient sensors into Internet of Things (IoT) devices for real-time nutritional monitoring, reducing the need for user input while enhancing accessibility and usability. The shortage of tellurium and toxicity of lead are major obstacles to scaling mid-temperature thermoelectric generators. We engineer quaternary lead chalcogenides with composition (Pb0.8Ge0.2Te)0.95-x(PbSe)0.05(PbS)x (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.25), where Pb is lead, Ge is germanium, Te is tellurium, Se is selenium, S is sulfur, and x denotes the molar fraction of lead sulfide (PbS). The primary novelty lies in achieving ultra-low thermal conductivity through controlled phase segregation induced by systematic PbS incorporation. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals single-phase solid solutions up to x ≈ 0.10, with secondary PbS precipitates forming beyond this threshold. These PbS-rich phases create hierarchical microstructures that scatter phonons across multiple length scales, suppressing total thermal conductivity to 0.6 Wm−1K−1 at x = 0.15—approximately 84% lower than pristine lead telluride (PbTe) and approaching glass-like thermal conductivity values. Electrical transport measurements demonstrate sulfur’s role as an electron donor, enabling carrier-type control from p-type to n-type conduction. Despite moderate electrical power factors, the optimized composition (x = 0.20) achieves a peak dimensionless figure of merit ZT ≈ 0.34 at 650 K. This work demonstrates an effective strategy for tellurium-lean, lead-reduced thermoelectric materials through sulfur-induced phase segregation, providing practical design guidelines for sustainable waste heat recovery applications. Fogging on glass poses a severe challenge in daily life, potentially even becoming life-threatening during driving and surgery; therefore there is a need for antifog surface structures. Fabricating superhydrophilic surfaces has been one of the major solutions to the challenge. Conventional direct thermal annealing glass in a furnace at 900 K for 2 h led to superhydrophicity but failed to produce superhydrophilicity on quartz. Meanwhile, it degraded transmission and was low throughput. This study developed a programmed fast plasma treatment of planar soda-lime glass and quartz in air, applied for only a few seconds, that was able to fabricate superhydrophilic surfaces. The process led to a 0° contact angle without sacrificing transmission, a result unreported before. The plasma treatment covered a whole 30 × 30 cm2 substrate in only approximately 5 s, resulting in superhydrophilicity, which has rarely been reported before. This simple yet controllable process has great potential for further scale-up and practical applications. Full article

This paper presents the development and analysis of a planar microfluidic microwave sensor featuring three circular complementary split-ring resonators (CSRRs) fabricated on an RO3035 substrate. The sensor demonstrates enhanced sensitivity in characterizing liquids contained in a fine glass capillary tube by leveraging a novel configuration: a central 5-split-ring CSRR with a drilled hole to suspend the capillary, flanked by two 2-split-ring CSRRs to improve the band-stop filtering effect. The sensor’s performance is benchmarked against another CSRR-based microwave sensor with a similar configuration. High linearity is observed (R2 > 0.99), confirming its capability for precise ethanol concentration prediction. Compared to the replicated square CSRR design from the literature, the proposed sensor achieves a 35.22% improvement in sensitivity, with a frequency shift sensitivity of 567.41 kHz/% ethanol concentration versus 419.62 kHz/% for the reference sensor. The enhanced sensitivity is attributed to several key design strategies: increasing the intrinsic capacitance by enlarging the effective area and radial slot width to amplify edge capacitive effects, adding more split rings to intensify the resonance dip, placing additional CSRRs to improve energy extraction at resonance, and adopting circular CSRRs for superior electric field confinement. Additionally, the proposed design operates at a lower resonant frequency (2.234 GHz), which not only reduces dielectric and radiation losses but also enables the use of more cost-effective and power-efficient RF components. This advantage makes the sensor highly suitable for integration into portable and standalone sensing platforms. Full article

This study presents colorless polyimides (PIs) suitable for use as plastic substrates in flexible displays, designed to be compatible with controlled soft adhesion and easy delamination (temporary adhesion) processes. For this purpose, we focused on a PI system derived from norbornane-2-spiro-α-cyclopentanone-α′-spiro-2″-norbornane-5,5″,6,6″-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (CpODA) and 2,2′-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzidine (TFMB). This system was selected with the aim of exhibiting excellent optical transparency and low linear coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) properties. However, fabricating this PI film via the conventional two-step process was challenging because of crack formation. In contrast, modified one-pot polymerization at 200 °C using a combined catalyst resulted in a homogeneous solution of PI with an exceptionally high molecular weight, yielding a flexible cast film. The solubility of PI plays a crucial role in its success. This study delves into the mechanism behind the significant catalytic effect on enhancing molecular weight. The CpODA/TFMB PI cast film simultaneously achieved very high optical transparency, an extremely high glass transition temperature (Tg = 411 °C), a significantly low linear coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE = 16.7 ppm/K), and sufficient film toughness, despite the trade-off between low CTE and high film toughness. The CpODA/TFMB system was modified by copolymerization with minor contents of another cycloaliphatic tetracarboxylic dianhydride, 5,5′-(1,4-phenylene)-exo-bis(hexahydro-4,7-methanoisobenzofuran-cis-exo-1,3-dione) (BzDAxx). This approach was effective in improving the film toughness without sacrificing the low CTE and other target properties. The peel strengths (σpeel) of laminates comprising surface-modified glass substrates and various colorless PI films were measured to evaluate the compatibility with the temporary adhesion process. Most colorless PI films studied were found to be incompatible. Additionally, no correlation between σpeel and PI structure was observed, making it challenging to identify the structural factors influencing σpeel control. Surprisingly, a strong correlation was observed between σpeel and CTE of the PI films, suggesting that the observed solid–solid lamination is closely linked to the unexpectedly high surface mobility of the PI films. The laminate using CpODA(90);BzDAxx(10)/TFMB copolymer exhibited suitable adhesion strength for the temporary adhesion process, while meeting other target properties. The modified one-pot polymerization method significantly contributed to the development of colorless PIs suitable for plastic substrates. Full article
