Inconel superalloys are employed in demanding components of different equipment. However, they can be exposed to atmospheric corrosion systems, such as marine and industrial environments. This research is focused on studying the localized corrosion susceptibility of Inconel 600, 690 and 718 exposed to H2SO4, 1 wt.% and 3.5 wt. % NaCl solutions, simulating marine and industrial atmospheres at 25 ± 0.5 °C. Localized corrosion behavior was characterized by electrochemical noise (EN) and cyclic potentiodynamic polarization (CPP) curves according to ASTM 6-199 ASTM G61 standards. The EN technique was analyzed through time series and analysis for chaotic systems, such as Hurst, Lyapunov and Husdorff coefficients, to determine the corrosion type of each system to reduce the uncertainty in common statistical analysis. The EN results show how Inconel superalloys tend to present localized attacks, being more notorious in NaCl. The application of specialized methods such as Hurst and Lyapunov helped to determine the corrosion system when alloys were characterized by EN. The results indicated that all superalloys exhibit positive hysteresis under CPP, indicating susceptibility to localized pitting corrosion. Full article

Ultrasonic frequency pulse assisted TIG welding (UFP-TIG) experiments were conducted to join Inconel 690 alloy (IN690) by adding Inconel 718 alloy (IN718) as the filler. The effect of the filler on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and ductility dip cracking (DDC) susceptibility of IN690 joints were investigated. The results show that a variety of precipitates, including MC-type carbide and Laves phases, are formed in the weld zone (WZ), which are uniformly dispersed in the interdendritic region and grain boundaries (GBs). The increase in the thickness of the IN718 filler facilitates the precipitation and growth of Laves phases and MC carbides. However, the formation of Laves phases in the WZ exhibits a lower bonding force with the matrix and deteriorates the tensile strength of IN690 joints. Due to the moderate content of Laves phases in the WZ, the IN690 joint with 1.0 mm filler reaches the maximum tensile strength (627 MPa), which is about 96.5% of that of the base metal (BM). The joint with 1.0 mm filler also achieves the highest elongation (35.4%). In addition, the strain-to-fracture tests indicate that the total length of cracks in the joint with the IN718 filler decreases by 66.49% under a 3.8% strain. As a result, the addition of the IN718 filler significantly improves the mechanical properties and DDC resistance of IN690 joints. Full article

Additive manufacturing (AM) technology has the advantages of designability, short process times, high flexibility, etc., making it especially suitable for manufacturing complex high-performance components for high-end industrial systems. However, the intensive temperature gradients caused by the rapid heating and cooling processes of AM can generate high levels of residual stresses, which directly affect the precision and serviceability of the components. Taking Inconel 690 alloy, which is widely used in nuclear power plants, as the research object, a thermo-coupled mechanical model of temperature field and residual stress field of directed energy deposition (DED) of Inconel 690 was established based on ABAQUS 2019 finite element software to study the influence of process parameters on the temperature history and the distribution of residual stresses in the DED process. The experimental results show that the peak temperature of each layer in the fabrication process increases with the increase in laser power and preheating temperature, and decreases with the increase in scanning speed and interlayer dwell time. Substrate preheating only has a large effect on the peak temperature of the first four layers. Residual stresses are mainly concentrated in the upper and middle parts, the bottom of the substrate, and the sides combined with the substrate, and the residual stresses increase with the increasing laser power and decrease with the increasing interlayer dwell time. Decreasing laser power, longer dwell time, higher preheating temperature, and appropriate scanning speed are beneficial for the reduction in residual stresses in Inconel 690 components. This research has important significance for the process design and residual stress modulation in the additive manufacturing of Inconel 690 alloy. Full article

The study focuses on investigating the relationship between the ultrasonic effect and microstructure of ultrasonic-assisted gas tungsten arc welding (UA-GTAW) Inconel690 alloy joints. The influence of ultrasonic vibrations on Inconel690 plates was examined, while also clarifying the distribution pattern of the ultrasonic effect across the plate. Furthermore, actual welding experiments were performed by varying the distance between the ultrasonic horn and the welding torch. The results revealed that there were changes in both grain growth direction within the weld zone and refinement effects achieved under different distances. The optimal refinement of primary and secondary dendrite arm spacing was observed at distances of 60 mm and 180 mm between the welding torch and ultrasonic horn. The hardness of weld zone reached 235HV1 when the distance between ultrasonic horn and welding torch is 180 mm. Full article

In this study, we synthesized three low-sulfur and low-phosphorus ionic liquids (ILs). These were N88816P8, P88816P8, and P88816DOSS. The viscosity and thermal stability of the three ILs were analyzed. The tribological properties and lubrication mechanisms of the three ILs were investigated as lubricants for a carbide ball–Inconel 690 nickel-based alloy friction pair and compared at 50 °C and 150 °C. The wear spots of the carbide ball and nickel-based alloy disc samples were characterized using SEM and EDS. The experimental results revealed that P88816P8 had excellent tribological properties. The lubrication mechanism of P88816P8 as a lubricant for the carbide ball–Inconel 690 nickel-based alloy friction pair was investigated using XPS. The excellent friction reduction and anti-wear properties of P88816P8 could be attributed to the tribo-chemistry between P88816P8 and Inconel 690 as well as the formation of a tribo-film on the wear-spot surface. This high-performance IL, suitable for carbide ball–Inconel 690 contact, will be applied to a cutting process of Inconel 690. Full article

Inconel 690 alloy is widely used in nuclear power, petrochemical, aerospace, and other fields due to its excellent high-temperature mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. The Inconel 690 alloy with different Mo content was fabricated by laser melting deposition (LMD). The effects of Mo content on the microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated. The microstructure of as-deposited Inconel 690 is composed of columnar dendrites grown epitaxially, and M23C6 carbides are precipitated in the grain boundaries. With the increase of Mo content, the amount of precipitated carbide increases gradually. At the same time, the grain boundary becomes convoluted. The tensile test at room temperature shows that the high Mo content in the as-deposited Inconel 690 increases the ultimate strength but decreases the ductility. Compared with low Mo content, the alloy with high Mo deposition has better mechanical properties. The present study provides a new method to achieve the preparation of Inconel 690 alloy with excellent integrated mechanical properties. Full article

During the welding of 690 nickel-based alloy, solidification cracking (SFC) and ductility-dip cracking (DDC) easily forms, which has a negative effect on the quality of welded joints and service life. The present study examined the effects of welding heat input and cladding layers on the SFC and DDC, as well as their formation mechanism. The microstructure observation, elemental distribution, and Varestraint test were carried out. The results show that SFC and DDC were formed for the Inconel filler metal 52M, and SFC is more prone to form than DDC. The alloy elements such as Fe, Si, C, and P from base metal can expand the solidification temperature range, such that the SFC sensitivity increases. With the increase of welding heat input, the grain size of cladding metal is increased with a great SFC sensitivity. The increasing welding heat input also makes DDC possible due to the formation of a large angle grain boundary. Full article

Heat exchangers manufactured from Inconel 690 tubes are widely used for steam generators in nuclear power plants. Inconel 690 tubes have suffered failures of fatigue fracture due to flow induced vibration. It is difficult to obtain the fatigue life of the tube directly since the conventional fatigue test would potentially cause end fatigue failure due to the stress concentration at the clamp end. In this study, a thin-walled Inconel 690 tube with circular hole is designed to deduce the fatigue life of smooth tube based on the notch fatigue life prediction technology. Firstly, the local stress and strain distributions around the hole based on the finite element analysis are discussed. Local stress-strain is calculated and compared with Neuber’s ruler. Meanwhile, fatigue life tests using tube specimens with circular holes are carried out. Finally, based on the best-fitted fatigue life curve of Inconel 690 alloy, the fatigue life of tube specimen is estimated from the local strain according to Neuber’s ruler. The results show that the local stress and strain estimated by Neuber’s ruler are basically consistent with those obtained by finite element analysis. Compared with the average fatigue life of nickel-based alloy, the new predicted equivalent fatigue life of heat Inconel 690 transfer tube with a hole is higher. The Inconel 690 heat transfer tube has better fatigue performance. Full article

Compared with the fatigue properties of the material (Inconel Alloy 690), the real fatigue lives of tubes are more meaningful in the fatigue design and assessment of steam generator (SG) tube bundles. However, it is almost impossible to get a satisfactory result by conducting fatigue tests on the tube directly. A tube with a uniform and thin wall easily fails near the clamping ends under cyclic loading due to the stress concentration. In this research, a set-up for fatigue tests of real tubes is proposed to overcome the stress concentration. With the set-up, low cycle fatigue tests were conducted in accordance with an existing fatigue design curve for Alloy 690. Strain control mode was applied with fully reversed push–pull loading under different strain amplitudes (0.15%, 0.2%, 0.3%, and 0.4%). A favourable result was obtained, and the low cycle fatigue behavior was investigated. The results showed that the fatigue life tested by the real tube was below the strain–life curve of Alloy 690 which was fitted by conventional solid specimens. A cyclic hardening behavior was found by the cyclic stress–strain curve when compared with the monotonic stress–strain curve. Full article
