Long-Term Effects of Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatments on Bone Mineral Density: 8-Year-Follow-Up Data from Real-World Practice

Objectives: The long-term effects of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) therapies on bone mineral density (BMD) remain incompletely characterized. We aimed to evaluate BMD trajectories over an 8-year follow-up in patients with RA treated with conventional synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (csDMARDs) or biological DMARDs (bDMARDs) in real-world practice. Methods: Patients were selected from an observational RA cohort established at Nice University Hospital between 2001 and 2016. Participants were classified into two groups according to treatment regimen (csDMARD only or any bDMARD exposure). BMD was assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry at baseline and after 1, 2, 3, 5, and 8 years at the lumbar spine, femoral neck, and total hip. Longitudinal changes in BMD were analyzed using multivariable linear mixed-effects models adjusted for age, sex, body mass index (BMI), disease duration, seropositivity, glucocorticoid use, anti-osteoporosis treatment, and clinical response. Results: A total of 312 patients were included, of whom 181 received bDMARDs and 131 were treated exclusively with csDMARDs. BMD showed limited change during the first two years in both groups. Beyond two years, modest declines were observed at hip sites at subsequent time points, whereas lumbar spine BMD did not demonstrate significant longitudinal change in pointwise analyses. In mixed-effects models, the treatment group–time interaction was significant for lumbar spine (p = 0.004) and total hip (p = 0.04), but not for the femoral neck (p = 0.34), indicating differential BMD trajectories over time between treatment groups. In the csDMARD group, lumbar spine and total hip BMD decreased by a mean of 0.0006 and 0.0005 g/cm2 per month, respectively, whereas no significant slopes were observed in the bDMARD group. Older age was associated with lower BMD, while male sex and higher BMI were associated with higher BMD across sites. Conclusions: In this long-term real-world cohort, BMD remained relatively stable during the first two years of follow-up. Longitudinal analyses suggested a less pronounced decline in lumbar spine and total hip BMD trajectories among bDMARD-treated patients compared with those receiving csDMARD alone, underscoring the need for ongoing bone health monitoring in RA. The framework of the research whose part of results are published in this work is the category of real vector bundles over finite dimensional differentiable manifolds. The objects of studies are gauge structures on these vector bundles. We are interested in the dynamical properties of the holonomy groups of Koszul connections as well as on their topological properties, i.e., properties that are of homological nature. For the most part the context is the subcategory of Lie algebroids. In addition to other investigations, three open problems are studied in detail. (P1-Affine Geometry): When is a Koszul connection an affine connection? (P2-Riemannian Geometry): When is a Koszul connection a metric connection? (P3-Fedosov Geometry): When is a Koszul connection a symplectic connection? In the category of tangent Lie algebroids our homological approach leads to deep relations of our homological ingredients with the open problem of how to produce labeled foliations the most studied of which are Riemannian foliations. On a Lie algebroid we define two families of differential equations, the family of differential Hessian equations and the family of differential gauge equations. The solutions of these differential equations are implemented to construct homological ingredients which are key tools for our studies of open problems we are concerned with. We introduce Koszul Homological Series. This notion is a machine for converting obstructions whose nature is vector space into obstructions whose nature is homological class. We define the property of Degeneracy and the property Nondegeneracy of Koszul homological Series. The property of Degeneracy is implemented to solve problems (P1), (P2), and (P3). In the abundant literature on Riemannian foliations, we have only cited references directly related to the open problems which are studied using the tools which are introduced in this work. Thus, the property of nondegeneracy is implemented to give a complete solution of the problem posed by E. Ghys, (P4-Differential Topology): How does one produce Riemannian foliations? The beneficial use of mining waste aligns with circular economy thinking: saving primary resources can extend their lifetime and maintain availability, reduce the volume of legacy mining waste and its environmental impacts, and develop a resource beneficiation industry that is less energy and water intensive; mining lower grades at larger scale inevitably requires more beneficial reuse. Existing classifications applicable to different types of mine waste were reviewed. These include factors such as the mode of origin during the mining operation, grain size, chemical composition and stability. The result shows that these factors also largely control their civil engineering applications, suitability for end use sectors and potential hazards. Long-term liabilities related to chemical stability were identified as the most difficult challenge. When developing a reuse project, either by the end users or by the mine operator, it is likely that resource screening covering a comprehensive range of factors will be required, as none of the existing schemes individually cover all of the aspects needed to fully assess suitability for beneficial use. In conclusion, there is a need for a systematic and structured approach to classification of mining waste to facilitate reuse as raw materials, such as that presented in our review. Full article

Spreading depolarizations (SDs) are major pathophysiological events in several brain diseases, including migraine, brain ischemia, trauma, and epilepsy. However, the electrophysiological detection of SDs remains challenging. In this study, we examined changes in spikes (action potentials (APs) and action currents (ACs)) in layer 5 neurons of the somatosensory cortex of anesthetized rats during transient excitation at the onset of high-potassium-induced SDs. During whole-cell recordings, spike amplitude progressively decreased while spike duration increased during gradual neuronal depolarization at SD onset, culminating in depolarization block. A similar decrease in spike amplitude and increase in spike duration were observed during the pre-SD excitation phase in loose cell-attached recordings from single neurons and in cluster analysis of extracellular spikes. Multiple (non-clustered) unit activity also showed decrease in spike amplitude and spike broadening during pre-SD excitation. These findings suggest that dynamic changes in spike amplitude and duration at SD onset could serve as markers for SD detection. Full article

In this paper, considering the influence of high-temperature and high-pressure environments on the operating characteristics of rotary combined seals, a mathematical model of rotary composite seals is established based on the thermo-elastohydrodynamic lubrication theory. Furthermore, based on a static analysis of the composite seal and by using the deformation influence coefficient matrix method under the small deformation theory, the elastic deformation distribution of the composite seal under the action of oil film pressure is determined. Combined with the hydrodynamic lubrication equation, the energy equation for the temperature field, and the viscosity-temperature equation, the thermo-elastohydrodynamic lubrication model of the rotary composite seal is solved using the finite difference method, and the oil film thickness distribution and oil film pressure distribution during the operation of the composite seal are calculated. The results show that the sealing medium pressure has a significant effect on the sealing performance. In the axial direction, the oil film pressure first increases and then decreases, while remaining within a stable fluctuation range. Full article

Photochromic diarylethene molecules are promising candidates for applications in optical data storage devices. However, many reported diarylethene compounds suffer from inefficiencies due to low photocyclization quantum yields or poor fatigue resistance. To address this issue, we have developed a highly efficient boron–nitrogen heterocycle-bridged diarylethene. The bulky boron–nitrogen heterocyclic ethene bridge blocks interconversion between parallel and anti-parallel conformations, yielding two separated rotamers. Evaluation of their photochromic properties demonstrated that the anti-parallel conformer exhibits a high photocyclization quantum yield (Φo-c, 89.2%), excellent thermodynamic stability at 298 K and moderate fatigue resistance in hexane. Furthermore, direct comparison with its isosteric carbonaceous analog revealed that incorporating the azaborine moiety into the diarylethene scaffold significantly enhances its photochromic performance. This work presents a strategy that employs azaborine chemistry for the development of potential diarylethene-based photoswitchable materials. Full article

Zinc-based coatings are insufficient as surface coatings; they corrode rapidly and can cause long-term damage to subsea pipelines and other instruments. Therefore, this research was undertaken by manufacturing a sacrificial nano-reinforced Zn coating combined with additives via electrodeposition onto a mild steel S235 substrate, which provides excellent corrosion resistance under severe marine conditions. The electrodeposited coatings were characterized using SEM/EDS and XRD, revealing the effective incorporation of cerium oxide nanoparticles and high-quality graphene (Gr) in the zinc matrix. Vickers microhardness measurements, mechanical resilience, and surface roughness of the Zn-CeO2-Gr coating showed an inverse correlation between improved microhardness (+65.85%) and mechanical resilience (+31.49%), while surface roughness decreased (−81.48%) compared to pure zinc electrodeposited coatings. These characteristics indicate grain refinement and greater reliability under mechanical stress. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and DC polarization measurements indicate a significant improvement in corrosion resistance compared to pure zinc, due to the synergistic effect between graphene and cerium oxide nanoparticles, which reduces the cathodic activity of the surface. These findings offer promising applications for cutting-edge materials in saline environments. Full article

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) films containing two different hemp-derived essential oils (EOs), Carmagnola CS (Carm) and Futura 75 (Fut), at 1, 5, and 10% wt were successfully produced via solvent casting for packaging applications. The influence of EO presence, type, and concentration on the chemical, morphological, and thermal properties of the PLA-based films was investigated. In addition, radical-scavenging activity, water transport properties, and antimicrobial performance were evaluated to assess the effect of EOs on the structural and functional characteristics of the resulting packaging materials. FTIR spectroscopy confirmed the successful incorporation of the hemp essential oils Carm and Fut into the polymer matrix, with a concentration-dependent effect that is more pronounced for Fut than for Carm. In the second heating run, evaluated by DSC measurements, both EOs lowered Tg from 60.3 °C (PLA) to 52.0 °C for PLA_10 Carm and 55.1 °C for PLA_10 Fut. The EOs act as plasticizers in the PLA matrix, improving the deformation at break. Gas barrier measurements showed that permeability decreased from 3027 ± 300 Barrer (PLA) to (2499 ± 44) Barrer in PLA_10 Carm and 2623 ± 130 Barrer in PLA_10 Fut, with a corresponding reduction in diffusivity. The barrier improvement factor reached 17% for Carm and 15% for Fut, confirming the enhanced barrier performance of PLA_EOs films. DPPH assays showed that PLA_EOs films retained most of the antioxidant activity of the free oils, with only a 10–15% reduction for PLA_Fut and no significant loss for PLA_Carm after one week. After one month, the activity of Carm in PLA film decreased by 18%, whereas the performance of its free form remained unchanged, confirming the superior and more stable radical scavenging capacity of Carm compared to Fut. Overall, the study demonstrates that hemp essential oils can be effectively integrated into PLA without compromising structural integrity, while preserving antioxidant performance and enhancing water barrier properties, supporting their potential as sustainable active packaging components. The recognition of a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment as a human right has reshaped global human rights discourse, yet its operationalisation remains uneven. This article examines how the African human rights system which is uniquely grounded in collective rights, has reframed environmental protection as a constitutive element of development, sovereignty, and justice. Through doctrinal and case-law analysis, it traces the evolution from the African Commission’s foundational jurisprudence in SERAC, which extended state duties to the regulation of private and transnational corporate actors, to the African Court’s landmark judgment in LIDHO v. Côte d’Ivoire. The study demonstrates how the Court transforms the aspirational ‘greening’ of human rights into binding obligations by articulating a robust duty of vigilance and linking environmental harm to violations of the rights to life, health, and development. It further shows that LIDHO inaugurates a post-sovereign model of shared and polycentric responsibility, in which state accountability encompasses corporate conduct within their jurisdiction and, potentially, beyond it. The article concludes that the African Charter’s collective framework offers an implicit regional model of ecological justice, one capable of addressing extractive asymmetries and informing emerging climate-related obligations across the continent. (1) Background: Idiopathic scoliosis is a three-dimensional deformity, yet clinical and research decision-making still relies largely on radiographic Cobb angle measurements. As a radiation-free alternative, clinical assessment of transverse and sagittal plane deformities has gained importance. This study evaluated the concurrent validity and intra- and interrater reproducibility of continuous measurements of rib hump, thoracic kyphosis, and lumbar lordosis obtained using a smartphone application in adolescents with spinal deformities. (2) Methods: Adolescents aged 10–17 years with scoliosis (>10° Cobb) or hyperkyphosis (>50° Cobb) were recruited. Continuous measurements of angle of trunk rotation (ATR) during the Adams forward bend test and in standing position, as well as sagittal profile, were collected using the ISICO app mounted on a standardized plastic tool. Concurrent validity was assessed against a scoliometer using Spearman correlation, root mean square error, and Bland–Altman analysis, while reproducibility was evaluated using intraclass correlation coefficients, standard error of measurement, and minimal detectable change. (3) Results: Thirty-two adolescents were included for validation and intrarater analyses and 34 for interrater analyses. ATR measured during the Adams test showed very high correlation with the scoliometer and minimal bias, while standing ATR showed moderate correlation. Reliability was excellent for rib hump during forward bending and moderate for sagittal parameters, with the lowest values observed for lumbar lordosis. (4) Conclusions: These findings support the clinical use of continuous app-based ATR assessment and suggest that sagittal measurements may be useful with appropriate examiner training. Full article

Exogenous shocks can affect equity markets by changing volatility and cross-market co-movement. This study examines how two U.S.-centred events, treated as different shock types, influence time-varying conditional correlations between the U.S. stock market and other G7 markets. The uncertainty shock is proxied by the U.S. presidential election of 5 November 2024, while the action shock is proxied by President Trump’s 2 April 2025 announcement of reciprocal tariffs. Using daily log returns for the S&P 500 and leading indices for Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom, we cover January 2010 to July 2025 and assess event effects using correlation paths for June 2024–June 2025 and symmetric ±30-day windows. We employ a DCC-GARCH model to jointly estimate conditional variances and dynamic correlations for six USA-G7 pairs. The results indicate persistent correlation dynamics, with Canada/USA the highest and Japan/USA the lowest. Election-related uncertainty is associated with declines in correlation for European pairs, suggesting temporary decoupling, while Canada and Japan show only small changes. By contrast, the tariff action shock significantly increases conditional correlations across all country/USA pairs, implying stronger market synchronisation, with the largest increases in North America and parts of Europe, and the smallest adjustment in Japan. Influence of Ethanol on Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction of Bioactive Compounds from Cocoa Pod Husk and Their Antioxidant, Antihypertensive, and Antihyperglycemic Activity

Cocoa pod husk (CPH), a major agro-industrial residue, contains valuable bioactive compounds whose recovery can support sustainable waste valorization. This study evaluated the influence of increasing ethanol concentrations on the ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) of bioactive compounds from CPH and their antioxidant, antihypertensive, and antihyperglycemic activity. Dried and milled CPH was extracted using ethanol–water mixtures (0–100% ethanol) under fixed ultrasonic conditions. Cocoa pod husk powder characterization and the resulting extracts were analyzed in terms of chemical composition (lignocellulosic compounds, proximate and elemental composition, and bromatological composition), antioxidant capacity, and in vivo antihypertensive and antihyperglycemic effects in Wistar rats. The results showed that solvent polarity strongly modulated extraction efficiency: absolute ethanol yielded the highest phenolic (171.43 mg GAE/g) and flavonoid (132.05 mg QE/g) content, whereas hydroalcoholic mixtures, particularly 50:50, enhanced overall antioxidant performance, especially in FRAP. The chemical analysis results showed the selective recovery of compounds such as quercetin, hesperidin, and theobromine, and FTIR-PCA results revealed distinct solvent-dependent chemical profiles. In vivo assays indicated modest blood pressure stabilization and a more pronounced antihyperglycemic effect after chronic administration. Overall, UAE proved an effective, rapid, and solvent-efficient method for CPH valorization, highlighting its potential for producing natural antioxidants applicable to food, nutraceutical, and cosmetic formulations. For the western Patagonia region (Argentina), climate change models predict a 1–3 °C increase in temperature and a 10%–30% reduction in precipitation. Patagonia native forests are home to a variety of soil fungi, including ectomycorrhizal fungi (EcM), which play a crucial role in drought-tolerant trees. However, the responses of soil fungi to changes in rainfall remain poorly understood. To evaluate shifts in soil fungal communities’ response under reduced precipitation scenarios and identify potentially drought-tolerant EcM species, we took 144 composite soil samples associated with Nothofagus forests along an east–west rainfall gradient. We used environmental DNA to estimate alpha and beta diversity of soil fungi and EcM. Soil fungal richness did not differ across precipitation treatments, whereas EcM richness declined with decreasing precipitation. Shannon and inverse Simpson indices of EcM decreased under reduced precipitation, whereas no significant effects were observed on soil fungi, highlighting the EcM vulnerability to water limitation. Soil fungi community composition changes along the rainfall gradient due to species replacement. Tarzetta sp., Cortinarius sp., and Russula sp. were found in drier plots, indicating a potential association with drought tolerance. Selecting native drought-tolerant EcM for forest management and restoration can improve seedling establishment and ecosystem resilience under climate change. Full article

Cancer is an alarming health concern and economic burden in both developed and developing countries. Recently, there has been a growing demand for new alternative medications with more effectiveness and fewer harmful effects. During the past decades, a set of chemotherapeutic agents has been developed to fight against a large spectrum of cancer types. Unfortunately, their use is associated with a high level of toxicity; they are expensive, also, and their deployment is restricted by the emergence of cellular resistance. Plant-based components are garnering attention due to their low toxicity, selectivity, efficiency, and ease of accessibility. Alkaloids are one of these targeted compounds. Indeed, they are a highly diverse group with basic heterocyclic nitrogen-containing alkaloids that exhibit potent anticancer effects against a large panel of solid and liquid tumors, such as lung, breast, leukemia, liver, and colon cancer. The main molecular mechanisms involved in alkaloids’ anticancer effect are the induction of apoptosis via the extrinsic and intrinsic pathways, DNA damage, and the inhibition of cell cycle progression. Amazingly, these auspicious compounds exhibited strenuous inhibitory effects against a whole range of key enzymes involved in cancer progression and metastasis, such as Cytochrome P450 (CYP450), Cyclooxygenase-2 (Cox-2), Lysine-Specific Demethylase 1 (LSD1), Poly [ADP-ribose] polymerase (PARP), and topoisomerase, mainly through two action modes, namely irreversible and reversible inhibition. Furthermore, several conventional extraction methods have been developed to extract bioactive compounds from natural matrices, such as Soxhlet and hot water extraction. However, these techniques have many drawbacks, as they require a large amount of organic solvents, which not only affect human health but also generate severe environmental issues. To overcome these limitations, multiple eco-extraction techniques have emerged as potential alternatives to traditional extraction methods such as ultrasonic extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, and supercritical fluid extraction. In fact, they are considered eco-friendly and efficient technologies with less time and solvent consumption. Overall, this review aims to provide an updated overview of the most prominent anticancer alkaloids that have not been well reviewed already, as well as the main green extraction techniques relevant to the extraction of antineoplastic alkaloids.
