Background/Objectives: Copper is an essential trace element for physiological processes related to reproduction, but its impact on the hypothalamic–pituitary–ovarian (HPOA) axis and its specific mechanism remain unclear. Methods: In vivo study: 21-day-old female Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were randomly assigned to five groups (n = 10 per group), with all groups fed a basal diet and supplemented with CuSO4·5H2O to achieve copper ion concentrations of 0, 15, 30, 45, or 60 mg/kg in the diet. During the second phase of proestrus, blood samples, hypothalamic tissues, pituitary tissues, and ovarian tissues were collected. In vitro study: Primary mixed hypothalamic neurons were isolated and cultured from fetal SD rats on embryonic day 17. After identification by NSE immunofluorescence staining, six copper ion concentration groups (0, 15.6, 31.2, 46.8, 62.4, and 78 μmol/L) were established. The optimal copper concentration for cell viability and GnRH secretion was screened using CCK-8 assay (Sangon, Shanghai, China) and ELISA (Mlbio, Shanghai, China). On this basis, the cells were treated with different concentrations of PKC agonist (PMA) and PKC inhibitor (chelerythrine). Cell viability was evaluated by CCK-8 assay, the expression level of PKC was detected by Western blot, and the optimal concentration with no obvious toxicity was selected for subsequent mechanism research. Results: Dietary copper dose-dependently regulated rat puberty onset; the 45 mg/kg copper group had the earliest onset, and showed significantly increased levels of reproduction-related hormones (GnRH, FSH, LH, E2) in serum and HPOA axis. Hypothalamic transcriptomics revealed significantly enriched GnRH signaling pathways and GABAergic synaptic pathways. Mechanistically, this copper dose upregulated hypothalamic KISS-1, GPR54, and PKC (mRNA/protein), and downregulated GABA/GABA-R. Adding 46.8 μmol/L copper (as Cu2+, equivalent to optimal in vivo level) could activate the KISS-1/GPR54-GnRH system in hypothalamic neurons; regulating PKC activity could synchronously affect the expression of KISS-1, GPR54, GnRH, and GABA/GABA-R, with additional copper enhancing this effect in vitro experiments. Conclusions: This study demonstrates for the first time that dietary copper at 45 mg/kg promotes puberty onset in SD rats. The mechanism involves activation of the hypothalamic PKC pathway, which inhibits GABAergic neurotransmission while activating the KISS-1/GPR54-GnRH system, thereby enhancing HPOA axis activity and gonadotropin secretion. Recent clinical outbreaks of infectious diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms, such as viruses, bacteria, and fungi, along with the emergence of unwanted microorganisms in industrial settings, have significantly reduced efficiency. Graphene has recently attracted significant attention as a potential antimicrobial agent because of its low toxicity, ease of production and functionalization, and high solubility in water. The presence of oxygen functional groups allows the interaction of the compound with bacteria and other biomolecules, making it an interesting candidate for antimicrobial therapy. Moreover, integrating graphene into copper coatings has been shown to enhance their antimicrobial properties. However, the implementation of copper–graphene composite coatings is currently limited by the difficulty of uniformly distributing graphene within the copper matrix. Copper (Cu)-doped graphitic nanoplatelets (CuGnPs), one option to overcome this challenge, are made via a mechanochemical reaction between solid graphite and Cu powder. The configuration of C–Cu bonds within CuGnPs can be identified using a range of analytical techniques, including transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry. To evaluate the antibacterial activity of the Cu-GnPs, we employed Escherichia coli or Staphylococcus aureus. Various amounts (250, 500, 750, and 1000 μg/mL) of prepared CuGnP samples were incubated in a bacterial suspension for 3 or 6 h at 150 rpm and 37 °C for a colony-forming unit assay. Three hours and six hours of treatment of the bacteria with CuGnPs led to a significant difference in bacterial survival compared with that of the control. It was observed that CuGnPs, with copper bound to graphene oxide, more effectively inhibited the proliferation of E. coli compared with nanoplatelets containing graphene oxide alone. These findings suggest that the unique properties of CuGnPs, such as C–Cu bonds, high surface area, and the coexistence of micropores and mesopores, are valuable for exerting strong antimicrobial effects making CuGnPs effective at preventing bacterial colonization on industrial surfaces. The escalating problem of copper (Cu) and cadmium (Cd) pollution in aquatic environments poses a significant threat to the ovarian tissue and reproductive capacity of fish, hindering the development of the aquaculture industry. However, the combined effects of Cu and Cd on fish gonadal development remain unclear. In this study, the fish species Nile tilapia was stressed with rearing water containing 300 μg/L Cu2+ and 100 μg/L Cd2+ for 30 days, followed by an intraperitoneal injection of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH-α) and human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) at various concentrations. We investigated the ovarian transcriptome profiles before and after injection. Prior to injection, combined treatment with Cu and Cd resulted in reproductive dysfunction and metal ion imbalance in tilapia. Transcriptomic profiling revealed differential gene annotation concentrated in the MAPK signaling pathway and regulation of GTPase activity. Post-injection, all concentrations of LHRH-α and HCG groups showed an upregulated gonadosomatic index (G.S.I) and higher levels of vitellogenin (VTG), gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), gonadotropin (GTH), and estrogen (E2) in serum compared to the negative control group. Transcriptomic analysis revealed alterations in various ovarian signaling pathways, preliminarily revealing the in vivo molecular mechanisms and differences in LHRH-α and HCG. The findings from this study could help us better understand how to counteract the effects of combined Cu and Cd exposure on tilapia ovarian development, which has significant implications for the Nile tilapia aquaculture industry. In this study, the nano-aluminum powder was reinforced with a hybrid of copper and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs). The ratios of GNPs were 0 wt%, 0.4 wt%, 0.6 wt%, 1.2 wt% and 1.8 wt%. To avoid the reaction between aluminum and graphene and, consequently, the formation of aluminum carbide, the GNP was first metalized with 5 wt% Ag and then coated with the predetermined 15 wt% Cu by the electroless coating process. In addition, the coating process was performed to improve the poor wettability between metal and ceramic. The Al/(GNPs-Ag)Cu nanocomposites with a high relative density of 99.9% were successfully prepared by the powder hot-pressing techniques. The effects of (GNPs/Ag) and Cu on the microstructure, density, hardness, and compressive strength of the Al-Cu nanocomposite were studied. As a result of agitating the GNPs during the cleaning and silver and Cu-plating, a homogeneous distribution was achieved. Some layers formed nano-tubes. The Al4C3 phase was not detected due to coating GNPs with Cu. The Cu9Al4 intermetallic was formed during the sintering process. The homogeneous dispersion of Cu and different ratios of GNs, good adhesion, and the formation of the new Cu9Al4 intermetallic improved in hardness. The pure aluminum sample recorded 216.2 HV, whereas Al/Cu reinforced with 1.8 GNs recorded 328.42 HV with a 51.9% increment. The compressive stress of graphene samples was improved upon increasing the GNPs contents. The Al-Cu/1.8 GNs sample recorded 266.99 MPa. Full article

Bioleaching has been regarded as a green alternative to chemical leaching in metal extraction processes. In this study, the bioleaching properties of indigenous acidophilic bacteria for various sulfide minerals were compared and evaluated in terms of pH reduction and metal leaching. The primary minerals in the samples were sphalerite (ZnS) (SP), galena (PbS) (GN1 and GN2), pyrite (FeS2) (PY), and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) (CCP), and an indigenous acidophilic bacterium, Acidiphilium cryptum (99.56%), was applied for bioleaching experiments. The metal extraction in bioleaching differed according to the mineral content. The leached metal concentration of Zn was higher than that of Pb for the SP sample with a high ZnS content, whereas the concentration of Pb was higher than that of Zn for the GN1 and GN2 samples with a high PbS content. Meanwhile, the leaching rate of Zn was faster than that of Pb for all samples. Corrosion action was observed on the surface of bacterial residues in SP and GN1 samples. These results show that the bioleaching mechanism based on sulfide minerals proceeds through indirect biological oxidation, chemical oxidation, and direct bacterial oxidation. The results of this study can provide basic research data for process optimization when employing bioleaching to extract valuable metals. Full article

The rise of antimicrobial resistance has brought into focus the urgent need for the next generation of antimicrobial coating. Specifically, the coating of suitable antimicrobial nanomaterials on contact surfaces seems to be an effective method for the disinfection/contact killing of microorganisms. In this study, the antimicrobial coatings of graphene@curcumin-copper (GN@CR-Cu) were prepared using a chemical synthesis methodology. Thus, the prepared GN@CR-Cu slurry was successfully coated on different contact surfaces, and subsequently, the GO in the composite was reduced to graphene (GN) by low-temperature heating/sunlight exposure. Scanning electron microscopy was used to characterize the coated GN@CR-Cu for the coating properties, X-ray photon scattering were used for structural characterization and material confirmation. From the morphological analysis, it was seen that CR and Cu were uniformly distributed throughout the GN network. The nanocomposite coating showed antimicrobial properties by contact-killing mechanisms, which was confirmed by zone inhibition and scanning electron microscopy. The materials showed maximum antibacterial activity against E. coli (24 ± 0.50 mm) followed by P. aeruginosa (18 ± 0.25 mm) at 25 µg/mL spot inoculation on the solid media plate, and a similar trend was observed in the minimum inhibition concentration (80 µg/mL) and bactericidal concentration (160 µg/mL) in liquid media. The synthesized materials showed excellent activity against E. coli and P. aeruginosa. These materials, when coated on different contact surfaces such medical devices, might significantly reduce the risk of nosocomial infection. Full article

The thermal conductivity, mechanical, and tribological properties of polyimide (PI) composites filled by copper (Cu), carbon nanotube (CNT), graphene nanosheet (GNS), or combination were investigated by molecular dynamics simulation (MD). The simulated results suggested that Cu can improve thermal stability and thermal conductivity, but it reduces mechanical properties and tribological properties. CNT and GNS significantly improved the thermal and tribological properties at low content, but they decreased the properties at high content. In this study, the modification mechanism, friction, and wear mechanism of different fillers on polyimide were revealed by observing the frictional interface evolution process from the atomic scale, extracting the atomic relative concentration, the temperature and velocity distribution at the friction interface, and other microscopic information. The application of Sn-Bi series solder is limited due to the brittleness of Bi phase. Sn-20Bi solder with less Bi element content has great research prospects, but it needs modification to make it a substitute for traditional Sn-Pb solder. In this article, we mixed graphene nanosheets with nanometer Sn powder by means of ultrasonic oscillation, and Sn-20Bi-qGNS (q = 0.01, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, and 0.1 wt.%) solder alloys were prepared by the melt-casting method. The effects of graphene nanosheets (GNSs) on the microstructure, physical properties, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance of solder alloys were investigated. Scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to determine the microstructural morphology and composition. The results showed that the melting point, density, and wettability of the solder decreased slightly with the addition of GNSs. The addition of GNSs as a second phase refined the solder structure and improved the tensile strength of the molten Sn-20Bi composite solder to 99.6 MPa, while elongation decreased with the addition of GNSs. Furthermore, GNSs prevented the MC Sn-20Bi-qGNSs/Cu intermetallic compound layers’ growth by interfering with atomic diffusion and grain boundary movement. In addition, the addition of 0.02 wt.% GNSs enhanced the shear strength of MC Sn-20Bi solder joints to 46.3 MPa. The electrochemical experimental results show that the surface corrosion products of MC Sn-20Bi-qGNSs under 3.5% NaCl solution were Sn3O(OH)2Cl2, with MC Sn-20Bi-0.01GNSs exhibiting the best corrosion resistance. This work investigates the feasibility of increasing the electric conductivity of an AA1370 aluminium wire by using pulse-reverse electrodeposition to realize Cu-Graphene composite coating. The graphene adopted was in the form of nanoplates (GnP). To study the effects of plating parameters, a 23 factorial plan was developed and tested. During the tests, the following process parameters were varied: the current density, the frequency and the duty cycle. The ANalysis Of VAriance (ANOVA)) was adopted to evaluate their influence on the coated wires’ morphology and electrical conductivity resistance. The results show that all the tested conditions allow good compactness to the coating, and the amount of graphene is well incorporated within the microstructure of the copper deposit. In addition, in the best conditions, the electrical resistivity decreases up to 3.4% than the uncoated aluminum. Full article

In this article, we present the performance of Copper (Cu)/Graphene Nano Sheets (GNS) and C—π (Graphite, GNS, and Nitrogen-doped Graphene Nano Sheets (N—GNS)) as a new battery electrode prototype. The objectives of this research are to develop a number of prototypes of the battery electrode, namely Cu/GNS//Electrolyte//C—π, and to evaluate their respective performances. The GNS, N—GNS, and primary battery electrode prototypes (Cu/GNS/Electrolyte/C—π) were synthesized by using a modified Hummers method; the N-doped sheet was obtained by doping nitrogen at room temperature and the impregnation or the composite techniques, respectively. Commercial primary battery electrodes were also used as a reference in this research. The Graphite, GNS, N—GNS, commercial primary batteries electrode, and battery electrode prototypes were analyzed using an XRD, SEM-EDX, and electrical multimeter, respectively. The research data show that the Cu particles are well deposited on the GNS and N—GNS (XRD and SEM—EDX data). The presence of the Cu metal and electrolytes (NH4Cl and MnO2) materials can increase the electrical conductivities (335.6 S cm−1) and power density versus the energy density (4640.47 W kg−1 and 2557.55 Wh kg−1) of the Cu/GNS//Electrolyte//N—GNS compared to the commercial battery (electrical conductivity (902.2 S cm−1) and power density versus the energy density (76 W kg−1 and 43.95 W kg−1). Based on all of the research data, it may be concluded that Cu/GNS//Electrolyte//N—GNS can be used as a new battery electrode prototype with better performances and electrical activities. The strength–ductility trade-off has been a long-standing challenge when designing and fabricating a novel metal matrix composite. In this study, graphene-nanosheets (GNSs)-reinforced copper (Cu)-matrix-laminated composites were fabricated through two methods, i.e., the alternating electrodeposition technique followed by spark plasma sintering (SPS) and direct electrodeposition followed by hot-press sintering. As a result, a Cu-GNS-Cu layered structure formed in the composites with various Cu layer thicknesses. Compared with the pure Cu, the yield strength of the GNS/Cu composites increased. However, the mechanical performance of the GNS/Cu composites was strongly Cu-layer-thickness-dependent, and the GNS/Cu composite possessed a brittle fracture mode when the Cu layer was thin (10 μm). The fracture mechanism of the GNS/Cu composites was thoroughly investigated and the results showed that the premature failure of the GNS/Cu composites with a thin Cu layer may be due to the lack of Cu matrix, which can relax the excessive stress intensity triggered by GNSs and delay the crack connection between neighboring GNS layers. This study highlights the soft Cu matrix in balancing the strength and ductility of the GNS/Cu-laminated composites and provides new technical and theoretical support for the preparation and optimization of other laminated metal matrix composites. The metal-rich Vazante-Paracatu Mineral Belt, in central Brazil, hosts the Zn-Pb sulfide Morro Agudo District in the Mesoproterozoic (1.3–1.1 Ga) upper carbonate sequence of the Vazante Group. The Morro Agudo district is comprised of the Morro Agudo deposit and the Bento Carmelo, Sucuri, and Morro do Capão occurrences. This carbonate sequence also hosts the Fagundes, Ambrósia and Bonsucesso Zn-Pb sulfide deposits (northern part) and the zinc silicate Vazante and North Extension deposits (southern part). The structurally controlled, stratabound and stratiform styles of mineralization in the Morro Agudo orebodies have been variably classified as sedimentary exhalative, Irish-type and Mississippi Valley-type. In this study, laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) spot analyses of sphalerite and galena from the Morro Agudo district revealed that red sphalerite (interpreted as the last stage) has higher Fe and Mn and lower Bi, Co, Cu, Ge, Hg, Tl compared to the other types of sphalerite, whereas the first generation of galena (Gn-I) is enriched in Ag, Cd, and Se and depleted in Cu and Mn relative to later galena (Gn-II). Mineral paragenesis and principal component analysis (PCA) of ore mineral composition suggest that the Morro Agudo, Sucuri and Morro do Capão mineralized zones formed by similar processes involving Zn-Pb mineralizing fluids with various compositions, comprising two main elemental associations: (1) Fe, As, In, Mn, Sb, Ag; and (2) Cd, Bi, Co, Ga, and Se. Bento Carmelo is distinguished in PCA by its unique dolomite-hosted sphalerite composition with elevated concentrations of Cu, Ge, Hg and likely formed from distinct fluids or processes. Temperatures of the mineralizing fluids for the Morro Agudo district range from 82 to 320 °C, calculated based on the trace element composition of sphalerite. The styles of mineralization and ore compositions are consistent with MVT deposits; however, fluid temperatures are hotter than typical MVT mineralizing fluids and may reflect a higher geothermal gradient or active advective fluid flow during the Brasiliano orogeny. The industrial revolution resulted in the contamination of natural water resources. Therefore, it is necessary to save and recover the natural water resources. In this regard, polymer-based composites have attracted the scientific community for their application in wastewater treatment. Herein, molybdenum disulfide composites with a mix phase of copper, copper oxide and graphene (MoS2-Cu/CuO@GN) were synthesized through the hydrothermal method. Methylene blue (MB) was degraded by around 93.8% within the 30 min in the presence of MoS2-Cu/CuO@GN under visible light. The degradation efficiency was further enhanced to 98.5% with the addition of H2O2 as a catalyst. The photocatalytic degradation efficiency of pure MoS2, MoS2-Cu/CuO and MoS2-Cu/CuO@GN were also investigated under the same experimental conditions. The structural analysis endorses the presence of the Cu/CuO dual phase in MoS2. The charge recombination ratio and band gap of MoS2-Cu/CuO@GN were also investigated in comparison to pure MoS2 and MoS2-Cu/CuO. The chemical states, the analysis of C1s, O1s, Mo3d and Cu2p3, were also analyzed to explore the possible interaction among the present elements. The surface morphology confirms the existence of Cu/CuO and GN to MoS2. Full article

In this work, a technology was developed for the formation of BaCe0.8Sm0.2O3+1 wt% CuO (BCS-CuO)/Ce0.8Sm0.2O1.9 (SDC) thin-film electrolyte membranes for intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs) on porous NiO-BCS-CuO anode substrates using direct electrophoretic deposition (EPD). The effect of increasing the zeta potential when modifying the base suspension of a micro-sized SDC-gn powder (glycine–nitrate method) with the addition of a SDC-lec nanopowder (laser evaporation–condensation) was investigated. Dependences of the current strength on the deposition time and the deposited weight on the EPD voltage were obtained, and evolution of the morphology of the coatings during the modification of the SDC-gn suspension and a suspension of BCS-CuO powder was studied. The compatibility of the shrinkage kinetics of the SDC, the BCS-CuO electrolyte coatings and the NiO-BCS-CuO anode substrate was studied during the high-temperature sintering. Dense BCS-CuO/SDC films of different thicknesses were obtained for the first time on porous NiO-BCS-CuO anode substrates and comprehensive microstructural and electrochemical studies were carried out. The developed technology can be applied to the formation of anode-supported SOFCs with thin-film electrolyte membranes. Full article

Due to an extreme increase in population growth, Egypt suffers from a widening gap in the quantity of imported wheat compared with production and local consumption. Two field trials were conducted during the 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 seasons with three levels of humic substances (HSs) as a foliar spray (1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 g L−1; HS1, HS2 and HS3) and three levels (5.04, 7.56 and 10.08 kg ha−1; HS4, HS5 and HS6) as a soil application. These were applied three times (30, 45 and 60 days after sowing) in comparison with the control (HS0) to evaluate the performance of three wheat varieties (Seds1 (V1), Misr2 (V2) and Giza168 (V3)) grown in clay loam soil. The experiment was set up according to the split-plot structure in a randomized complete block design; however, the varieties were set as the main plot and treatments were a sub-main plot. Generally, the data indicated that the soil application treatments recorded maximum values for most growth and yield attributes, except for spike length and grain weight per spike, SPAD reading and total grain yield in the first season, and leaf area and biological yield in the second season. HS1, HS2, HS5, and HS6 were the superior treatments for most of the nutrient contents studied. Regarding the influence of variety, the results showed that V3 recorded maximum values for LA, SpL, TGW, TGY and leaf Zn and Cu contents in both seasons; PH, GWS and leaf N content in the first season; and SPAD reading, BY and leaf K, Fe and Mn contents in the second season. V1 was the superior variety for GWS, BY, leaf K and Mn contents in the 2018/2019 season and PH, GNS in the second season, followed by V2, which had the greatest values for leaf P contents in both seasons, and SPAD reading, GNS and leaf Fe content in the 2018/2019 season and GWS and leaf N content in the second season.
