Urban canopy mitigates urban heat, yet how the spatial configuration of high- and low-canopy layers shapes population heat exposure across a national urban system remains insufficiently understood. Drawing on a panel of 369 Chinese prefecture-level cities for 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2020, this study constructs a population-weighted thermal-exposure metric—the Human Heat Exposure Index (HEI)—and stratifies urban vegetation into high- and low-canopy classes based on Chinese Land Cover Dataset (CLCD) land-cover types. Multiscale Geographically Weighted Regression (MGWR) and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) with SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP)-based interpretation are combined to identify spatially varying associations and nonlinear marginal effects of stratified canopy patterns on HEI. HEI shows a persistent south–high, north–low spatial structure, with Global Moran’s I stable at approximately 0.85 throughout the study period. High-canopy edge density and cohesion are increasingly associated with reduced heat exposure in densely built regions, while low-canopy mean patch area and edge density retain explanatory power across all years through near-surface evapotranspirative regulation. The marginal cooling effect of vegetation strengthens appreciably only above an Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) of approximately 0.6, and the apparent inflection ranges for impervious surface proportion and standardized solar radiation lie near 25% and 0.4, respectively. These findings suggest that in cities with high impervious loads, cooling-network connectivity and within-zone canopy configuration matter more than additional canopy area alone, and that planning targets should be calibrated to climate zone, city type, and existing surface conditions. Cross-modal correspondence, a cross-sensory cognitive phenomenon, reveals the link between visual forms and taste experiences. Although research on Western alphabetic typography is extensive, the Chinese character system has received less attention. This study systematically examines Chinese typeface categories (Song, Hei, Yuan, and Calligraphic) and stroke thickness (bold, medium, thin) in a real packaging context. The effects on the expectancies of the five flavors—sour, sweet, bitter, spicy, and salty—were measured. The results showed a significant interaction effect between typeface category and stroke thickness for all five flavor dimensions. The rounded Yuan typeface with thin strokes tended toward sweetness. Bold Song typefaces tend toward bitterness or spiciness, while bold Hei typefaces tend toward saltiness. The Calligraphic typeface, with its complex visual features, is strongly associated with bitterness and spiciness only when paired with bold strokes. Sourness shows a reverse modulation pattern. These findings reveal that the visual features of Chinese typefaces shape gustatory crossmodal correspondences through interactive modulation rather than simple linear addition. This confirms the common cross-modal perceptual pattern of ‘curvature-sweetness, angularity-non-sweetness’ across Chinese and English writing systems while also reflecting the culturally specific patterns driven by Chinese typographic features (such as the bifeng structure at stroke terminals) and the unique phenomenon of cross-modal correspondence with spiciness. This provides an empirically grounded and culturally adaptive reference for the marketing application of Chinese typefaces in packaging contexts. Full article

Improving the health supportiveness of the campus built environment is a key strategy for alleviating health pressures in higher education institutions (HEIs). As a complex environmental system, a university campus requires systematic assessment of its environmental health performance to inform science-based design and planning decisions. This study systematically reviews the environmental characteristics of current healthy-campus assessment tools (HCATs) for HEIs and evaluates their compatibility with a Chinese standards context. A three-phase mixed-methods approach identified 12 HCATs, examined their environmental features, and constructed a content framework. Three representative Chinese alternative tools were compared. The results show that: (1) HCATs vary by development context but consistently prioritize physical environmental resources that support health behaviors, such as abundant and reasonable active transportation and fitness facilities and a health-promoting environmental culture, rather than conventional physics performance. (2) Although Chinese tools overlap with HCATs on certain environmental topics, they cannot replace HCATs in terms of environmental integration, coverage, and applicability to HEI settings. (3) Future Chinese HCATs should strengthen environmental support for behavior change and health promotion and improve operability. This study reveals gaps between current Chinese tools and HCATs, underscores the necessity of developing environment-focused HCATs for Chinese HEIs, and provides a foundation for related tools’ development work. Auricularia heimuer is a valuable traditional Chinese fungus used as food and medicine. Hei29 is a strain derived from wild A. heimuer through systematic domestication and selection. It has been the primary A. heimuer variety in Northeast China for 30 years and offers the advantages of high yield, good commercial property, and stable traits. This study used protoplast nucleation on Hei29 to produce two amiable and paired monokaryons, Hei29-D1 and Hei29-D2. The genome of Hei29 was sequenced utilizing the Illumina PE150 and PacBio Sequel sequencing platforms. Hei29-D1 and Hei29-D2 had genomic sizes of 47.54 Mb and 47.49 Mb, GC contents of 56.95% and 56.99%, and an N50 of 2.37 Mb and 4.28 Mb, respectively. Hei29’s genome possessed two phytoene synthase (PSY) protein genes, one of which—PSY encoded by g894—has a transmembrane domain. The phylogenetic tree showed that Hei29 shared the closest evolutionary relationship with Auricularia subglabra TFB-10046 SS5. Collinearity analysis showed that the correlation between the two monokaryons was as high as 90.81%. Cluster analysis revealed that Hei29 contains 12,362 core genes, 223 unique genes in Hei29-D1, and 228 unique genes in Hei29-D2. This study is the first to sequence two related and paired monokaryons from A. heimuer, which is critical for fully understanding the genetic composition and information of the characteristic strain of A. heimuer in Northeast China. It establishes the data and theoretical foundation for gene mining, usage, and molecular breeding. It further promotes the genetic breeding and active substance utilization of A. heimuer. Against the backdrop of the pressing challenge of global climate change and the framework of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this study focuses on examining how regional air pollution pressures drive the transition towards green practices within higher education institutions (HEIs). This research begins with the painstaking manual collection and organization of green transformation data from 113 Chinese HEIs spanning the years 2017 to 2022. We construct a comprehensive green transformation index for higher education, including four dimensions: Education and Research, Operational Management Efficiency, Green Campus Construction, and Social Participation, along with 14 foundational indicators. Empirical analysis demonstrates a significant positive correlation between air pollution pressures and the green transformation of HEIs, confirming the facilitative role of government policy support and public environmental awareness in this transformative process. This study further uncovers that the timeliness and continuity of policies are crucial for HEIs in responding to environmental pressures and accelerating their green transition. Moreover, it highlights the impact of regional characteristics, revealing that HEIs in economically more advanced regions exhibit a stronger response to air pollution pressures compared with those in less developed areas. This research not only enhances understanding of the interplay among environmental policies, public engagement, and behavioral changes in HEIs but also furnishes policymakers, HEI administrators, and environmental advocates with robust empirical evidence. It underscores the urgency for multi-stakeholder collaboration, policy incentives, and the consideration of regional specifics, thereby providing strategic guidance for facilitating green transformations in HEIs and advancing the attainment of global sustainability objectives. Improper solid waste management (SWM) has resulted in an environmental and epidemiological catastrophe, emphasizing the urgency of SWM due to escalating solid waste generation. Over the past few decades, there has been significant growth in publications studying the relationship between SWM and the environment. Higher education institutes (HEIs) also have a social responsibility to promote public understanding of SWM and to increase awareness among students about SWM. A bibliometric analysis was conducted to provide an overview of research on student awareness of SWM in HEIs over the past 35 years. Data on publication output are identified based on the Scopus database (from 1989 to 2024). A total of 634 articles on SWM awareness and practices among students in HEIs were identified. VOSviewer was used to map the current studies and visualize the current trends in this area. The analysis of keywords used in the publications highlights recurring terms such as “recycling”, “environmental awareness”, and “waste management”, indicating the primary research focus. The results show a significant increase in publications in this area over the last 35 years. China, the US, and the UK emerge as the countries with the highest number of publications with 115, 82, and 44 publications, respectively, where China alone contributed 18.14% of the total publications on the topic, with the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Tsinghua University being the leading institutions in this research field. The results also highlight the top researchers in the field of student awareness of SWM in HEIs. It identifies influential journals in this field, such as Sustainability (MDPI) and the Journal of Cleaner Production (Elsevier). Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the current state of research on student awareness of SWM in HEIs, identifying research hotspots. It serves as a valuable resource for academics and practitioners interested in this area. The findings of the study are intended to guide researchers planning to conduct further research on the issue. Full article

Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) play an increasingly significant role in the practice of sustainability. For HEIs in their early stages of sustainability, they are still in need of sustainable assessment tools (SATs) that are suitable for their local context and also lead international sustainable development. The purpose of this paper is to develop a two-hierarchy sustainability assessment tool (THSus) for Chinese higher education institutions, including a quick analysis tool (QAT) and an in-depth benchmarking tool (IBT). The QAT provided a general overview of campus sustainability for HEIs to initiate initial actions and screen cases for the IBT. The IBT then provides more targeted analysis to plan long-term strategic changes. Based on the analysis of HEI cases, a 34-person Chinese research team was enlisted to discuss and select characteristics to formulate THSus. Indicators and weightings were developed according to the tool’s purpose and applied to 15 cases to test its effectiveness. Results showed that THSus is suitable for systematically analyzing campus issues, particularly in research areas. It offers a regional solution for Chinese campuses that is adaptable and considers the comprehensive core of sustainability. Full article

In the context of globalization and the intensification of international competition, the construction of public cultural facilities has long been not limited to meeting the cultural needs of the people but has become an important initiative to shape the competitiveness of cities. This paper collected POI and socio-economic statistics from 2012 to 2020 from 285 Chinese cities and employed the coefficient of variation (CV), Gini index (GI), ESDA, and GeoDetector to analyze the spatial patterns and driving mechanisms of public cultural facilities. Findings: (1) Public cultural facilities in Chinese cities were featured by evident regional gradient differences and uneven spatial distributions, with a CV greater than 1.3 and a GI greater than 0.5 in both years. They also showed signs of aggregation at weak levels, with a Moran I of 0.15 in both years and a cluster pattern of “hot in the east and cold in the west”. (2) Different types of public cultural facilities had differences in their differentiation, aggregation, and change trends. The CV changed from 1.39~2.69 to 1.06~1.92, and the GI changed from 0.53~0.80 to 0.47~0.62, with the differentiation of libraries, museums, theaters, art galleries, and cultural centers decreasing gradually, while that of exhibition halls increased day by day. As the Moran I increased from 0.08~0.20 to 0.12~0.24, libraries, museums, art galleries, and cultural centers showed weak aggregation with an increasingly strong trend. Theaters and exhibition halls also showed weak aggregation but in a declining trend, with the Moran I changing from 0.15~1.19 to 0.09~0.1. (3) The five driving variables exhibit significant differences in their strength across time and across regions, with the economic and infrastructure factors being the strongest and the urbanization factor the weakest. There are significant differences in the strength of the driving forces among the factors, with the total retail sales of consumers, the number of subscribers to internet services, regular higher education institutions, and undergraduates in regular HEIs playing both direct and interactive roles as the core factors. (4) The 285 cities in China are divided into four policy zonings of star, cow, question, and dog cities. Star cities should maintain their status quo without involving too much policy intervention, whereas the core and important factors should be the focus of policy in dog cities and cow cities, and the auxiliary factors should be the focus of policy in question cities. This paper contributes to the in-depth knowledge of the development pattern of public cultural facilities and provides a more refined basis for the formulation of public cultural facility promotion policies in China and similar countries. In recent years, the increasingly fierce competition among higher education institutions (HEIs), the finite resources, and the enormous influence of the COVID-19 epidemic on higher education have made it especially important to evaluate the performance of Chinese higher education institutions. This paper utilizes the DEA-BCC and Malmquist index to analyze the efficiency and productivity of 34 Chinese “985 Project” universities in the period 2017–2021. The indicator system includes three inputs and five outputs, contained in Model 1 and Model 2 for comparative analysis. The results demonstrate that the COVID-19 epidemic has had a considerable negative impact on Chinese higher education, and has induced the reduction of technical efficiency and productivity. Setting up online MOOCs is conducive to enhancing the efficiency and productivity of HEIs; in addition, the efficiency mentioned varies noticeably among different university levels, and there is no significant difference in different university types and geographical locations. Predictors of healthy eating parameters, including the Healthy Eating Index (HEI), Glycemic Index (GI), and Glycemic Load (GL), were examined using various modern diets (n = 131) in preparation for personalized nutrition in the e-health era. Using Nutrition Data Systems for Research computerized software and artificial intelligence machine-learning-based predictive validation analyses, we included domains of HEI, caloric source, and various diets as the potentially modifiable factors. HEI predictors included whole fruits and whole grains, and empty calories. Carbohydrates were the common predictor for both GI and GL, with total fruits and Mexican diets being additional predictors for GI. The median amount of carbohydrates to reach an acceptable GL < 20 was predicted as 33.95 g per meal (median: 3.59 meals daily) with a regression coefficient of 37.33 across all daily diets. Diets with greater carbohydrates and more meals needed to reach acceptable GL < 20 included smoothies, convenient diets, and liquids. Mexican diets were the common predictor for GI and carbohydrates per meal to reach acceptable GL < 20; with smoothies (12.04), high-school (5.75), fast-food (4.48), Korean (4.30), Chinese (3.93), and liquid diets (3.71) presenting a higher median number of meals. These findings could be used to manage diets for various populations in the precision-based e-health era. Full article

Education has played a central role and has had cross-cutting impact on all aspects of human life. China–Pakistan friendly relations have a long history. They cooperate in many parts of life, especially education, i.e., beneficial for better future education exchanges between countries. This study was conducted on the education systems of China and Pakistan to understand the higher education system through a student questionnaire. This research work aimed to investigate the perceptions of Pakistani and Chinese university students on sustainable development in higher education institutes (HEIs). HEIs and universities perform a unique and vital role in society by acting as intellectuals, entrepreneurs, and problem solvers. This section presents state of the art in sustainable development, the role of sustainable development in higher education, and the students’ perspectives. There were 327 questionnaires out of 400, with 27 incomplete replies being discarded, leaving us with 300 complete surveys. The literature and research theme were used to construct the hypotheses of this study. PLS-SEM, a statistical approach that utilized the partial least squares to model structural equations, was used to evaluate the hypotheses. The analysis must take into consideration all parameters. Smart PLS 3.3.9 was used for PLS-SEM analysis in this study. The results showed that quality assurance and students’ satisfaction were significant factors related to sustainable university development programs. Moreover, there was a good correlation between technological improvements in education institutes, teachers’ capacity-building programs, and student–teacher (learning–teaching) relationships. Pakistani institutions comprised 50% of the study’s participants, while students from Chinese universities comprised the remaining 50%. Among all participants, 9.66 percent of respondents were enrolled in Ph.D. programs, 37.67 percent were enrolled in an MS/M.Phil. programs, and 52.67 percent were undergraduate students. Moreover, this study also indicated that technical improvements and advancements positively correlated with sustainable development programs for Pakistani students. Full article

Similar to the problems surrounding carbon transfers that exist in international trade, there are severe carbon emission headaches in regional industrial systems within countries. It is essential for emission reduction control and regional industrial restructuring to clarify the relationship of carbon emissions flows between industrial sectors and identify key carbon-emitting industrial sectors. Supported by the input–output model (I-O model) and social network analysis (SNA), this research adopts input–output tables (2017), energy balance sheets (2021) and the energy statistics yearbooks (2021) of the three Chinese provinces of Hei-Ji-Liao to construct an Embodied carbon emission transfer network (ECETN) and determine key carbon-emitting industrial sectors with a series of complex network measurement indicators and analysis methods. The key abatement control pathways are obtained based on the flow relationships between the chains in the industrial system. The results demonstrate that the ECETNs in all three provinces of Hei-Ji-Liao are small-world in nature with scale-free characteristics (varying according to the power function). The key carbon emission industry sectors in the three provinces are identified through centrality, influence, aggregation and diffusion, comprising coal mining, the chemical industry, metal products industry, machinery manufacturing and transportation in Liaoning Province; coal mining, non-metal mining, non-metal products, metal processing and the electricity industry in Jilin Province; and agriculture, metal processing and machinery manufacturing in Heilongjiang. Additionally, key emission reduction control pathways in the three provinces are also identified based on embodied carbon emission flow relationships between industry sectors. Following the above findings, corresponding policy recommendations are proposed to tackle the responsibility of carbon reduction among industrial sectors in the province. Moreover, these findings provide some theoretical support and policy considerations for policymakers. Full article

The purpose of this empirical study is to investigate the effects of emotional intelligence (EI) on learning outcomes (e.g., social, cognitive, and self-growth outcomes) and satisfaction with the university experience of academics and administrative staff at Chinese and Pakistani research universities. This study also investigates the mediation of self-directed learning (personal autonomy, personal responsibility, and personal growth) and knowledge management processes (KMPs) concerning the relationship between EI and learning outcomes. Moreover, this study explores the relationship between learning outcomes and creative performance (creative self-efficacy and leadership/supervisor support). The survey method was considered appropriate for the data collection and was completed simultaneously through paper and electronic mediums. The partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) method with a measurement assessment, structural assessment, mediation, and multi-group analysis was applied to a sample of 729 academics and administrative staff from Chinese and Pakistani research universities. A few dissimilarities surfaced with regard to EI and learning outcomes while evaluating the higher education institutions (HEIs) from both countries. Moreover, an indirect relation between EI and learning outcomes was established via self-directed learning and KMPs. Lastly, the intended direct statistical association between learning outcomes and creative performance was also documented. This study may serve as an initiative to equate and differentiate EI in relation to learning outcomes and creative performance among higher education professionals in China and Pakistan. The considered framework is novel and supports both EI and learning outcomes while adhering to the perceived value of the two adjacent regions. Full article

Green retrofit is essential for the sustainable development of Chinese Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Limited by time and cost, a campus retrofit plan needs to consider both sustainability principles and usage demands to set feasible priorities. By integrating usage demands with sustainability principles, this paper aims to observe the relationship between the sustainability assessment tool (SAT) indicators of campus retrofit and users’ needs in this process. The Chinese official SAT for campuses was combined with the campus environment components from six investigated HEIs, and then processed by a group of 15 members to establish an implementable framework of retrofit objectives. Taking the Weijin Campus of Tianjin University as an example, feedback from 432 users on the sample environment was analyzed according to our framework. The results show the difference between the users’ perspective and sustainability indicators, emphasizing the importance of the sustainable development of HEIs and leading to the implementation of measures to improve sustainability awareness and guide a retrofit. The evidence regarding the impact of the scores on healthy eating indices on the risk of cardiovascular events among patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) is limited. As such, in this study, we examined the associations of adherence to the Chinese and American dietary guidelines and the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) among Chinese individuals with T2D. We conducted a 1:1 age- and sex-matched case–control study based on a Chinese population. We used a structured questionnaire and a validated 79-item food-frequency questionnaire to collect general information and dietary intake information, and calculated the Chinese Healthy Eating Index (CHEI) and the Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015). As participants, we enrolled a total of 419 pairs of hospital-based CVD cases and controls, all of whom had T2D. We found a significant inverse association between diet quality scores on the CHEI and HEI-2015 and the risk of CVD. The adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence interval) per five-score increment were 0.68 (0.61, 0.76) in the CHEI and 0.60 (0.52, 0.70) in the HEI-2015. In stratified analyses, the protective associations remained significant in the subgroups of sex, BMI, smoking status, tea-drinking, hypertension state, dyslipidemia state, T2D duration, and medical nutrition therapy knowledge (all p < 0.05). These findings suggest that a higher CHEI or HEI-2015 score, representing a higher-quality diet relative to the most recent Chinese or American dietary guidelines, was associated with a decreased risk of CVD among Chinese patients with T2D.
