Energy security crises have historically been turning points for energy systems, exposing vulnerabilities, reshaping policy priorities, and boosting technological change. However, whether—and to what extent—such crises accelerate low-carbon transitions remains contested. This paper examines the effects of the 2022 energy crisis on the European Union (EU)’s energy transition, using policy analysis combined with a quantitative assessment of renewable energy trends, forecasts, and targets. We analyse the ambition, implementation, and outcomes of the REPowerEU plan, the main response to the crisis. In an unprecedented move, REPowerEU securitised renewable energy as a means to reduce dependence on Russian energy imports. However, the plan only moderately increased earlier renewable energy targets and did not reverse declining subsidies despite more forceful implementation measures. Its effects have been uneven across technologies. Already accelerating solar may overshoot its targets, onshore wind might only slightly accelerate beyond its current steady growth, and offshore wind remains constrained by economic and institutional uncertainties. Despite increased subsidies for fossil fuels, coal continued declining, oil remained stable, and natural gas dropped. Overall, REPowerEU sustained rather than transformed the EU’s low-carbon transition, illustrating both the potential and limits of accelerating decarbonisation under security crises. Full article

Early Outcomes of Lecanemab for Alzheimer’s Disease in the Veterans Health Administration

Background/Objectives: While lecanemab (Leqembi) and several amyloid targeting therapies were approved for Alzheimer’s disease, questions remain on real-world implementation, safety, and effectiveness. The objective of this study was to describe the uptake and early outcomes of Veterans initiating lecanemab. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included Veterans who initiated lecanemab in the Veteran’s Health Administration (VHA) between October 2023 and July 2024. Treatment persistence and monitoring, change in Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) score, incidence of adverse events, including amyloid-related imaging abnormalities (ARIA), and healthcare utilization were analyzed at 7 months. Results: Overall, 32 Veterans (mean [SD] age 75.3 [6.0] years, 100% male, 97% white, 84% urban dwelling) initiated lecanemab. Seventeen patients (53%) had mild cognitive impairment, 15 (47%) had mild dementia; mean baseline MoCA score was 21.3 (SD 3.4). At 7 months following treatment initiation, we assessed process, safety, and effectiveness outcomes. Process outcomes: In all, 25 patients (78%) were persistent with treatment. Safety outcomes: Three patients (9%) experienced a stroke, and 7 (22%) experienced ARIA. Effectiveness outcomes: Only 12 (38%) patients had a MoCA completed by 7 months, and the mean change in MoCA was 0.0 (SD 3.7, p = 1.0). A follow-up amyloid positron emission tomography (PET) scan was completed by 9 (28%) patients, and 5 had reductions in amyloid. Conclusions: Initial observations in a small VHA cohort suggest that uptake of lecanemab was limited, and the finding that nearly 30% of patients experienced ARIA or stroke within 7 months of initiation underscores the importance of monitoring the lecanemab safety and effectiveness long-term. These early findings should be interpreted cautiously given the limited sample size and very limited follow-up MoCA data. Full article

Background: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of vision loss, with complex mechanisms. The study aimed to comprehensively explore vitreous humor of diabetic and non-diabetic individuals, paving the way for identifying the potential molecular mechanisms underlying DR. Methods: Vitreous samples from type 2 diabetic and non-diabetic subjects, collected post-mortem, were analyzed using liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry. Pathway enrichment and gene ontology analyses were conducted to identify dysregulated pathways and characterize protein functions. Results: Pathway analysis revealed dysregulation in multiple metabolic and signaling pathways associated with diabetes, including glycerolipid metabolism, histidine metabolism, and Wnt signaling. Gene ontology analysis identified proteins involved in inflammation, immune response dysregulation, and calcium signaling. Notably, proteins such as Inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor type 2 (ITPR2), Calcium homeostasis endoplasmic reticulum protein (CHERP), and Coronin-1A (CORO1A) were markedly upregulated in diabetic vitreous, implicating aberrant calcium signaling, inflammatory responses, and cytoskeletal reorganization in DR. Conclusions: Our study provides valuable insights into the intricate mechanisms underlying DR and highlights the significance of inflammation, immune dysregulation, and metabolic disturbances in disease progression. Identification of specific proteins as potential biomarkers underscores the multifactorial nature of DR. Future research in this area is vital for advancing therapeutic interventions and translating findings into clinical practice. Full article

Calcium homeostasis endoplasmic reticulum protein (CHERP) is colocalized with the inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor (IP3R) in the endoplasmic reticulum or perinuclear region, and has been involved in intracellular calcium signaling. Structurally, CHERP carries the nuclear localization signal and arginine/serine-dipeptide repeats, like domain, and interacts with the spliceosome. However, the exact function of CHERP in the nucleus remains unknown. Here, we showed that poly(A)+ RNAs accumulated in the nucleus of CHERP-depleted U2OS cells. Our global analysis revealed that CHERP regulated alternative mRNA splicing events by interaction with U2 small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (U2 snRNPs) and U2 snRNP-related proteins. Among the five alternative splicing patterns analyzed, intron retention was the most frequently observed event. This was in accordance with the accumulation of poly(A)+ RNAs in the nucleus. Furthermore, intron retention and cassette exon choices were influenced by the strength of the 5′ or 3′ splice site, the branch point site, GC content, and intron length. In addition, CHERP depletion induced anomalies in the cell cycle progression into the M phase, and abnormal cell division. These results suggested that CHERP is involved in the regulation of alternative splicing. Full article

Family Religiosity, Parental Monitoring, and Emerging Adults’ Sexual Behavior

The processes through which families play a role in the religious and sexual socialization of children are varied and complex. Few studies have considered the impact of parental or family religiosity on young people’s sexual behaviors, either directly or through influence on adolescents’ own religiosity. This study of college students at a large, public university in the mid-Atlantic uses multidimensional measures to examine the relationships among family religiosity, parental monitoring during adolescence, students’ religiosity, and students’ specific sexual behaviors. Results suggest that greater family religiosity is associated with a decreased likelihood of engaging in certain sex acts, but for students who do engage, family religiosity is not associated with any differences in the timing of sexual onset or in the numbers of partners with whom students engaged. Results also suggest that parental monitoring may mediate the relationship between family religiosity and some sexual risk behavior. Greater individual religiosity is associated with a lower likelihood of having engaged in any sexual activity, and a higher likelihood of condom use for students who have had vaginal sex. This study offers valuable insights into the role that religiosity, at both the family and the individual level, plays in college students’ sexual behavior. Full article
