This study presents the validation of the Player Personality and Dynamics Scale (PPDS), designed to identify player profiles in educational gamification contexts with narrative elements. Through a sample of 635 participants, a questionnaire was developed and applied, covering sociodemographic data, lifestyle habits, gaming practices, and a classification system of 40 items on a six-point Likert scale. The results of the factorial analysis confirm a structure of five factors: Toxic Profile, Joker Profile, Tryhard Profile, Aesthetic Profile, and Coacher Profile, with high fit and reliability indices (RMSEA = 0.06; CFI = 0.95; TLI = 0.91). The resulting classification enables the design of personalized gamified experiences that enhance learning and interaction in the classroom, highlighting the importance of understanding players’ motivations to better adapt educational dynamics. Applying this scale fosters meaningful learning through the creation of narratives tailored to students’ individual preferences. Full article

Addressing global challenges such as climate change and inequality requires convergence competencies that enable learners to devise sustainable solutions. Such competencies have been emphasized in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) fields, but empirical research and assessment tools tailored to Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS) remain scarce. This study aimed to develop and validate a self-assessment tool to measure convergence competencies among HASS learners. A three-round Delphi survey with domain experts was conducted to evaluate and refine an initial pool of items. Items with insufficient content validity were revised or deleted, and all retained items achieved a Content Validity Ratio (CVR) of ≥0.800, with most scoring 1.000. The validated instrument was administered to 455 undergraduates participating in a convergence education program. Exploratory factor analysis identified five key dimensions: Convergent Commitment, Future Problem Awareness, Future Efficacy, Convergent Learning, and Multidisciplinary Inclusiveness, explaining 69.72% of the variance. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the model’s goodness-of-fit (χ2 (160) = 378.786, RMSEA = 0.054, CFI = 0.952), and the instrument demonstrated high internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.919). The results confirm that the tool is both reliable and valid for diagnosing convergence competencies in HASS contexts, providing a practical framework for interdisciplinary learning and reflective engagement toward sustainable futures. In order to promote healthy aging, it is important to know older people’s perceptions of healthy aging. The aim of this study is to conduct a Turkish validity and reliability study of the Healthy Aging Perception Scale for Older People with Chronic Diseases. This study was conducted between November and December 2023 with older adult people living in a region in eastern Turkey. A total of 210 older people were included in the sample for the exploratory factor analysis and 214 for the confirmatory factor analysis. A Sociodemographic Information Form and Healthy Aging Perception Scale was used to collect the data of the study. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 27.0 and AMOS 22.0. Confirmatory factor analysis for the 18-item scale, a four-factor structure with an eigenvalue exceeding 1, was obtained, and it was determined that the factor loadings ranged between 0.834 and 0.637 and the total variance explained was 64.619%. The confirmatory factor analysis of the goodness of fit indices was found to be at an acceptable level. CMIN/DF = 2.834, RMSEA = 0.05, CFI = 0.929, TLI = 0.910, NFI = 0.920, and GFI = 0.901. Cronbach’s alpha of the scale was determined to be 0.826, and the test–retest reliability coefficient was determined to be 0.822. Factor analysis showed a better model fit, and it was determined that the Healthy Aging Perception Scale is a valid and reliable measurement tool in determining the perceptions of the healthy aging of older people with chronic diseases. Parental school involvement (PSI) is an important contributor to children’s academic and overall positive development. Such activities as discussing schoolwork and tracking progress can boost children’s motivation and achievements. Although the multifaceted nature of PSI is widely recognized, there are limited reliable measures that comprehensively capture all its dimensions, particularly for children and adolescents. This study aims to develop a measure for assessing children and adolescents’ perceptions of parental involvement based on parent- and teacher-validated self-report measures—the Parental School Involvement Questionnaire—Children’s version (PSIQ-CV). A total of 537 children and adolescents (MAge = 9.64, SDAge = 2.43), mainly female (52.8%), from the south of Portugal participated in this study. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA, n = 150) and a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA, n = 387) were carried out. The EFA indicated a three-factor solution (i.e., support in learning activities, parent–school communication, and supervision), supported by the CFA, with good quality-of-fit indices (χ2 = 225; df = 101; χ2/df = 2.23; CFI = 0.91; TLI = 0.89; RMSEA = 0.060 [CI: 0.049–0.070]). Our data confirmed that the PSIQ-CV has robust psychometric properties, with acceptable reliability and validity. The PSIQ-CV can be considered a relevant and valid tool for measuring the perception of parental school involvement among children and adolescents, in line with Epstein’s theoretical model, and useful for both researchers and practitioners. Food addiction is characterized by compulsive consumption and impaired control over highly palatable foods, with neurobiological mechanisms analogous to substance use disorders. The Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0 (YFAS 2.0) is the most widely used instrument to assess these symptoms; however, its psychometric properties have not been validated in Mexican adults. This study aimed to perform the cross-cultural adaptation of the YFAS 2.0 and validate its psychometric properties for the identification of food addiction in the Mexican adult population. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 500 Mexican adults aged 20 years or older. Participants completed the cross-culturally adapted YFAS 2.0. Exploratory and hierarchical factor analyses were conducted. Reliability was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha and omega coefficients, and model fit was evaluated through global fit indices. The scale showed high internal consistency (α = 0.88; ωt = 0.87; ωh = 0.89). The Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin index was 0.815 and Bartlett’s test was significant (χ2 = 4367.88; df = 595; p < 0.001). Exploratory factor analysis supported a unidimensional structure, with the first factor explaining 21.3% of the total variance. In the hierarchical model, all items loaded substantially onto the general factor. Fit indices indicated excellent model fit (CFI = 0.99; TLI = 0.98; RMSEA = 0.001; RMR = 0.004). The YFAS 2.0 is a valid and reliable instrument for identifying food addiction symptoms in Mexican adults. It may be useful in clinical practice and research on eating disorders. Full article

Background/Objectives: Hypoglycemia occurs when blood glucose levels drop significantly below the normal range leading to unpleasant symptoms and a greater risk of acute complications. Fear of hypoglycemia (FH) is a conditioned psychological response to hypoglycemia frequently experienced by people with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and their loved ones. The present study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of a Portuguese translation of the Hypoglycemia Fear Survey—Parents (HFS-P) for the parents of youths with T1D. Methods: The sample consisted of 102 parents (M = 44.58 years old; SD = 5.01; mothers = 92.2%) of youths with T1D (8 to 17 years of age; M = 12.67; SD = 2.58). Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and convergent validity were performed to examine the factor structure and the construct validity of the HFS-P. Results: CFA supports a refined two-factor 18-item version of the HFS-P. The results indicate good psychometric properties (χ2 [129] = 220.47.; p ≤ 0.001; χ2/DF = 1.71; RMSEA = 0.08; SRMR = 0.07; CFI = 0.93; TLI = 0.91; GFI = 0.93) along with good to excellent internal consistency coefficients (behavior subscale: α = 0.81, total: α = 0.93, and worry: α = 0.94). Conclusions: Our Portuguese version of the HFS-P appears reliable for assessing FH in parents of youths with T1D, and is ready for use in clinical research and to evaluate psychological interventions targeting parental FH in the Portuguese context. Background/Objectives: Loneliness is the sensation of feeling alone or emotionally isolated, even when one is surrounded by other people. It is associated with conditions such as depression, anxiety, harmful habits, and cardiovascular problems. The main objective of the present study was to develop and determine the psychometric properties of the Multidimensional Loneliness Scale (MLS), which is a self-report instrument. Methods: The present study is instrumental in nature, as it aims to analyze the psychometric properties of a new assessment instrument. A total of 484 adults, both men and women, aged between 18 and 55 years, participated in this research. Results: Exploratory factor analysis revealed the presence of four dimensions: social disconnection, family estrangement, loss of attachment figure, and intrapersonal emptiness. Confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated that the four-dimensional model exhibited a good fit (CFI = 0.91; RMSEA = 0.07; SRMR = 0.07; AIC = 737.87). The concurrent validity was evidenced by significant correlations with the De Jong Gierveld scale and the Revised UCLA Loneliness Scale. The reliability analysis demonstrated satisfactory internal consistency, with omega coefficients ranging from 0.84 to 0.92 and alpha coefficients from 0.84 to 0.93. Conclusions: The MLS is a self-report instrument designed to assess loneliness, and it has satisfactory psychometric properties. Full article

Assessing teacher candidates’ self-efficacy in using reading strategies is essential for understanding their academic development. This study developed and validated the Teacher Candidates’ Self-Efficacy Scale for Informational Reading Strategies (TCSES-IRS) using a mixed-methods sequential exploratory design. Initial qualitative data from interviews with 33 candidates and a literature review guided item generation. Lawshe’s method confirmed content validity. The scale was administered to 1176 teacher candidates. Exploratory (n = 496) and confirmatory factor analyses (n = 388) supported a five-factor structure—cognitive, note-taking, exploration and preparation, physical and process-based, and reflective and analytical strategies—explaining 63.71% of total variance, with acceptable fit indices (χ2/df = 2.64, CFI = 0.912, TLI = 0.900, RMSEA = 0.069). Internal consistency was high (α = 0.899 total; subscales α = 0.708–0.906). An additional sample of 294 participants was used for nomological network validation. Convergent validity was demonstrated by significant item-total correlations and strong factor loadings. Discriminant validity was evidenced by moderate inter-factor correlations. Criterion-related validity was confirmed via significant group differences and meaningful correlations with an external self-efficacy measure. The TCSES-IRS emerges as a psychometrically sound tool for assessing informational reading self-efficacy, supporting research and practice in educational psychology. Full article

Background and Objectives: Congenital heart defects (CHD) affect around 1% of the population, making them the most common congenital disease worldwide. Thanks to advances in treatment, over 90% of affected children are able to reach adulthood, shifting focus to long-term outcomes such as disease-specific quality of life (DsQoL). To date, there has been no validated, standardized instrument for assessing DsQoL in young German CHD patients. This study introduces the Congenital Heart Disease Specific Inventory (CHDSI), the first freely available German-language instrument for measuring DsQoL in children and adolescents with CHD. Materials and Methods: The CHDSI was developed at the German Heart Center Munich in collaboration with affected children and adolescents and validated nationwide via the National Register for Congenital Heart Defects (NRCHD) with 1201 participants (46 kindergarten children, 530 children, 625 adolescents). Two age-specific versions (36/37 items) and a 31-item preschool version were created, alongside a 6-item short form (CHDSI-SF) for rapid screening. Reliability was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha and split-half methods; construct validity via confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) using DWLS; and score interpretation through standardized stanine scales. The small sample size of kindergarten children precluded a model test for this group. The standard values given for this subsample should therefore be interpreted with caution. Results: The CHDSI showed excellent internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.856 to 0.900) and high split-half reliability (>0.95). CFA confirmed a robust six-factor structure with excellent model fit (CFI and TLI ≥ 0.991, RMSEA ≤ 0.05). Subscales showed strong discriminant validity, and significant differences were found by CHD severity and sex. Conclusions: The CHDSI is a psychometrically valid, age-appropriate, and freely available instrument for assessing DsQoL in children and adolescents with CHD. It provides valuable support for clinical decision-making and research. Further studies should explore international validation and cultural adaptation. Full article

The Impact of Extracurricular Activities on Pre-Service Teacher Professional Development: A Structural Equation Modeling Study

This study investigates the development of cognitive, emotional, and social skills in pre-service teachers through extracurricular activities, addressing 21st century challenges in preparing educators for diverse learning environments. It was hypothesized that extracurricular activities would positively influence cognitive skills (self-efficacy, self-regulation), emotional dimensions (professional interest), social competencies (teacher–student relationships), and academic achievement. This study employed predictive correlational methodology based on an integrated theoretical framework combining Social Cognitive Theory, Self-Determination Theory, Self-Regulation Theory, and Interpersonal Relationships Theory within formal–informal learning contexts. A psychometrically robust instrument (“Scale on the Contribution of Extracurricular Activities to Professional Development”) was developed and validated through exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, yielding a five-factor structure with strong reliability indicators (Cronbach’s α = 0.91–0.93; CR = 0.816–0.912; AVE = 0.521–0.612). Data from 775 pre-service teachers (71.1% female) across multiple disciplines at a Turkish university were analyzed using structural equation modeling (χ2/df = 2.855, RMSEA = 0.049, CFI = 0.93, TLI = 0.92). Results showed that extracurricular participation significantly influenced self-efficacy (β = 0.849), professional interest (β = 0.418), self-regulation (β = 0.191), teacher–student relationships (β = 0.137), and academic achievement (β = 0.167). Notably, an unexpected negative relationship emerged between self-efficacy and academic achievement (β = −0.152). The model demonstrated strong explanatory power for self-efficacy (R2 = 72.8%), professional interest (R2 = 78.7%), self-regulation (R2 = 77.2%), and teacher–student relationships (R2 = 63.1%) while explaining only 1.8% of academic achievement variance. This pattern reveals distinct developmental pathways for professional versus academic competencies, leading to a comprehensive practical implications framework supporting multidimensional assessment approaches in teacher education. These findings emphasize the strategic importance of extracurricular activities in teacher education programs and highlight the need for holistic approaches beyond traditional academic metrics, contributing to Sustainable Development Goal 4 by providing empirical evidence for integrating experiential learning opportunities that serve both academic researchers and educational practitioners seeking evidence-based approaches to teacher preparation. Background/Objectives: Psychological safety is essential for effective learning in high-fidelity simulation (HFS); however, no validated Japanese instrument currently exists to measure psychological safety among nursing students. This study aimed to translate the Psychological Safety in High-Fidelity Simulation (PS-HFS) scale into Japanese (PS-HFS-J) and evaluate its psychometric properties. Methods: Following COSMIN guidelines, the PS-HFS was translated through forward and back translation, reviewed by an expert panel, and tested for face validity via pilot testing. The scale’s reliability and validity were subsequently examined in 263 undergraduate nursing students using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), Cronbach’s alpha, and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). Results: CFA confirmed a good fit of the original four-factor model (CFI = 0.990, TLI = 0.988, RMSEA = 0.026). The scale demonstrated excellent internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.906 overall) and strong test-retest reliability (ICC range: 0.859–0.914). Content validity indices were also high (I-CVI = 0.80–1.00, S-CVI/Ave = 0.94). Conclusions: The PS-HFS-J is a reliable, valid, and culturally adapted instrument for assessing psychological safety in Japanese nursing education. It can support educational research, curriculum development, and faculty training, contributing to safer and more effective simulation-based education. Future studies should examine its applicability across diverse educational levels and clinical contexts. Full article

Social desirability is a widely studied phenomenon due to its impact on the validity of self-reported data. It refers to the tendency of individuals to respond to questions in a manner that they believe is socially acceptable or favorable rather than providing truthful or accurate answers. This study evaluated the psychometric properties of the Brief Social Desirability Scale (BSSD-4) in Ecuadorian youth, analyzing its reliability, factorial and convergent validity, and measurement invariance by sex, age group, and experiences of dating violence. An instrumental study was conducted with a non-probabilistic convenience sample of 836 participants (aged 14–26). Reliability was adequate (Ω = 0.75, α = 0.81, CR = 0.759). Confirmatory factor analysis showed good fit indices (CFI = 0.98, TLI = 0.97, RMSEA = 0.056, SRMR = 0.037). Convergent validity was acceptable (AVE = 0.50, VIF < 2.01). A network analysis confirmed the unidimensionality of the scale and structural differences between groups. Measurement invariance by sex and age was verified, but differences in the network structure were found based on victimization and perpetration of violence. The BSSD-4 is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing social desirability in Ecuadorian youth, useful for population studies and intergroup comparisons. Further research is recommended to explore its invariance in populations with a history of violence, as differences in scalar invariance were observed. Full article

The continuous crises of the neoliberal system have led to an authoritarian turn, with authoritarianism acquiring a different dimension since the studies of Altemeyer in 1981. The aim of the present study is to elaborate a scale to measure authoritarianism adapted to the contemporary era, the Neoliberal Authoritarianism Scale, and to test its validity and reliability. 232 people between the ages of 18 and 81 (X = 38.34; SD = 13.141) residing in Spain participated, consisting of 51.7% women and 38.8% men. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed a good fit of the four-factor model (χ2/df = 1.92; CFI = 0.993; TLI = 0.992; IFI = 0.993; GFI = 0.986; RMSEA = 0.041; SRMR = 0.063). The scale also showed an adequate internal consistency, with a global McDonald’s Omega of 0.893. Nevertheless, the Conventionalism factor needs to be improved (ω = 0.621). This scale is a first preliminary approach to measuring neoliberal authoritarianism, which may help to better understand its scope and impact on people’s lives. Full article

Sinusoidal Obstruction Syndrome/Veno-Occlusive Disease (SOS/VOD) is a severe complication of hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). Furthermore, emerging evidence suggests the potential role of complement activation and endothelial injury in SOS/VOD pathogenesis. In this study, we aimed to identify potential distinct pathogenic genetic variants between SOS/VOD and other endothelial injury syndromes following HCT, such as transplant-associated thrombotic microangiopathy (TA-TMA). For this aim, genomic DNA from 30 SOS/VOD patients and 30 controls with TA-TMA was analyzed. Using Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS), variants in complement-related genes (CFH, CFI, CFB, CFD, C3, CD55, C5, CD46, and thrombomodulin/THBD) and ADAMTS13 were examined. Out of 426 detected variants, 20 were classified as pathogenic. In SOS/VOD patients, variants were identified in ADAMTS13 (4), CFH (3), C3 (2), and CFB (1) genes. One of the variants has been recognized as the strongest genetic predictor of ADAMTS13 activity. Controls exhibited more variants in complement-related genes, particularly CFH, CFI, and C3. The genetic differences between SOS/VOD and TA-TMA highlight different pathogenic mechanisms, offering the potential for targeted risk assessment and therapy in HCT recipients. Full article

Background and Objectives: Blood-borne inflammatory ratios have been proposed as inexpensive prognostic tools across a range of diseases, but their role in pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) remains uncertain. In this retrospective case–control analysis, we explored whether composite indices derived from routine haematology—namely the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), the systemic immune–inflammation index (SII) and a novel CRP–Fibrinogen Index (CFI)—could enhance risk stratification beyond established cytokine measurements among Romanian adults with culture-confirmed pulmonary T. Materials and Methods: Data were drawn from 80 consecutive TB in-patients and 50 community controls. Full blood counts, C-reactive protein, fibrinogen, and four multiplex cytokines were extracted from electronic records, and composite indices were calculated according to standard formulas. The primary outcomes were in-hospital mortality within 90 days and length of stay (LOS). Results: Among TB patients, the median NLR was 3.70 (IQR 2.54–6.14), PLR was 200 (140–277) and SII was 1.36 × 106 µL−1 (0.74–2.34 × 106), compared with 1.8 (1.4–2.3), 117 (95–140) and 0.46 × 106 µL−1 (0.30–0.60 × 106) in controls. Those with SII above the cohort median exhibited more pronounced acute-phase responses (median CRP 96 vs. 12 mg L−1; fibrinogen 578 vs. 458 mg dL−1), yet median LOS remained virtually identical (29 vs. 28 days) and early mortality was low in both groups (8% vs. 2%). The CFI showed no clear gradient in hospital stay across its quartiles, and composite ratios—while tightly inter-correlated—demonstrated only minimal association with cytokine levels and LOS. Conclusions: Composite cell-count indices were markedly elevated but did not predict early death or prolonged admission. In low-event European cohorts, their chief value may lie in serving as cost-free gatekeepers, flagging those who should proceed to more advanced cytokine or genomic testing. Although routine reporting of NLR and SII may support low-cost surveillance, validation in larger, multicentre cohorts with serial sampling is needed before these indices can be integrated into clinical decision-making.
