In this study, a surface treatment process was introduced into the conventional dispersion process for preparing wet-laid nonwoven fabrics to improve their properties, using recycled carbon fibers (rCFs). The conventional binder solution was replaced with a solution containing different amounts of silane, and the changes in the fiber properties of the prepared nonwoven fabrics were examined after the addition of modified rCFs and polypropylene. FE-SEM analysis confirmed that a silane layer was formed on the rCF surface due to the formation of a siloxane network. FT-IR and XPS analyses further confirmed the presence of siloxane bonds and chemical modification of the rCF surface. When an optimal amount of silane content was used, the mechanical strength increased by 64% compared to untreated rCFs, owing to the improved molecular chain entanglement within the matrix. Our findings indicate that the simultaneous use of dispersion and a surface treatment can produce composites with excellent mechanical properties and improved processing and surface properties; thus, this method can be used to help upcycle rCFs, thereby expanding their applications. Background: Timely detection and removal of colonic adenomas are critical for preventing colorectal cancer. Methods: This study analyzed differences in colonic adenoma characteristics based on colonoscopy history by reviewing the medical records of 14,029 patients who underwent colonoscopy between January and June 2020 across 40 primary medical institutions in Korea. Results: Adenoma and advanced neoplasia characteristics varied significantly with colonoscopy history (p < 0.05). In the first-time colonoscopy group, adenomas were more frequent in the sigmoid colon (S-colon) and rectum, with Is features and non-granular laterally spreading tumors. Advanced neoplasia was also more common in the S-colon and rectum, with Is and advanced-type features. In the <5-year group, adenomas were predominantly found in the transverse colon (T-colon) and descending colon (D-colon), with IIa and IIb features. Advanced neoplasia in this group was more frequent in the cecum and T-colon, with IIa and IIb features and laterally spreading tumors. In the ≥5-year group, adenomas were more commonly located in the ascending colon (A-colon) and cecum, with Ip features, while advanced neoplasia was more frequent in the A-colon and D-colon, also with Ip features. Conclusions: Although every segment of the colorectum should be carefully observed regardless of colonoscopy history, these findings suggest that prioritizing specific colonic segments for examination based on colonoscopy history may improve adenoma detection rates and reduce the incidence of colorectal cancer. However, further large-scale, prospective studies are needed to confirm these findings and support their application in clinical practice. Full article

The perception of the concept of Eros has evolved through shared cinematic experiences, to the point of shaping collective imagery in Cadiz, Spain. This city is known for its creativity and an extraordinary amount of performances during the period of carnival, and is represented annually by anonymous citizens. The research method employed consisted of an exhaustive analysis of bibliographic, press, and archival references on audience behavior from the introduction of the cinematograph to the present day. The authors have designed a table that organizes the emergence of movie theaters in the city and completed the background information, delving into the historical, geographical, and idiosyncratic factors that have contributed to collective creativity in the city. From there, we analyzed the evolution of the concept of Eros through the perspectives of Byung Chul Han and Georges Bataille. As a result, we recovered the value of projection interruptions in the analog environment as an opportunity for collective interaction, confronting them with the demands of technological perfection. We demonstrated the resilience of the analog through new experiences that show the evolution of the need for collective contact. Future studies will focus on other contexts, such as supermarkets and terraces, to contribute to a broader understanding of urban spaces, social cohesion, and perceptions of Eros. Full article

Although stem cells are a promising avenue for harnessing the potential of adipose tissue, conventional two-dimensional (2D) culture methods have limitations. This study explored the use of three-dimensional (3D) cultures to preserve the regenerative potential of adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) and investigated their cellular properties. Flow cytometric analysis revealed significant variations in surface marker expressions between the two culture conditions. While 2D cultures showed robust surface marker expressions, 3D cultures exhibited reduced levels of CD44, CD90.2, and CD105. Adipogenic differentiation in 3D organotypic ADSCs faced challenges, with decreased organoid size and limited activation of adipogenesis-related genes. Key adipocyte markers, such as lipoprotein lipase (LPL) and adipoQ, were undetectable in 3D-cultured ADSCs, unlike positive controls in 2D-cultured mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Surprisingly, 3D-cultured ADSCs underwent mesenchymal–epithelial transition (MET), evidenced by increased E-cadherin and EpCAM expression and decreased mesenchymal markers. This study highlights successful ADSC organoid formation, notable MSC phenotype changes in 3D culture, adipogenic differentiation challenges, and a distinctive shift toward an epithelial-like state. These findings offer insights into the potential applications of 3D-cultured ADSCs in regenerative medicine, emphasizing the need for further exploration of underlying molecular mechanisms. Redox mediators comprising I, Co3+, and Ti3C2Tx MXene were applied to dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). In the as-prepared DSCs (I-DSCs), wherein hole conduction occurred via the redox reaction of I/I3 ions, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) was not altered by the addition of Ti3C2Tx MXene. The I-DSCs were exposed to light to produce Co2+/Co3+-based cells (Co-DSCs), wherein the holes were transferred via the redox reaction of Co2+/Co3+ ions. A PCE of 9.01% was achieved in a Co-DSC with Ti3C2Tx MXene (Ti3C2Tx-Co-DSC), which indicated an improvement from the PCE of a bare Co-DSC without Ti3C2Tx MXene (7.27%). It was also found that the presence of Ti3C2Tx MXene in the redox mediator increased the hole collection, dye regeneration, and electron injection efficiencies of the Ti3C2Tx-Co-DSC, leading to an improvement in both the short-circuit current and the PCE when compared with those of the bare Co-DSC without MXene. A representative naturally occurring coumarin, 4-methylumbelliferone (5), was exposed to 50 kGy of gamma ray, resulting in four newly generated dihydrocoumarin products 14 induced by the gamma irradiation. The structures of these new products were elucidated by interpretation of spectroscopic data (NMR, MS, [α]D, and UV). The unusual bisdihydrocoumarin 4 exhibited improved tyrosinase inhibitory capacity toward mushroom tyrosinase with IC50 values of 19.8 ± 0.5 μM as compared to the original 4-methylumbelliferone (5). A kinetic analysis also exhibited that the potent metabolite 4 had non-competitive modes of action. Linkage of the hydroxymethyl group in the C-3 and C-4 positions on the lactone ring probably enhances the tyrosinase inhibitory effect of 4-methylumbelliferone (5). Thus, the novel coumarin analog 4 is an interesting new class of tyrosinase inhibitory candidates that requires further examination. Full article

The first few decades of the twenty-first century have posed various challenges to humankind such as the worldwide impact of the changing patterns of globalization processes, economic crises, the pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and the specter of deglobalization illustrate. The unknown and unpredictable future is a reason for utmost concern for the contemporary society that Byung-Chul Han characterizes as an “achievement society”—one that is dominated by “excessive positivity” and that has evolved into a “doping society”. This “palliative society” is such because it is unable to cope with pain, and it is marked by a kind of permanent analgesia that prevents urgent reforms from taking place. In this essay, I examine how Pope Francis’s encyclical letters Laudato Si’ (2015) and Fratelli Tutti (2020)—by calling for an integral ecology (which connects environmental, economic, political, social, cultural, and ethical issues), social friendship, solidarity, and the common good—instill hope in the burnout society that Han reflects upon, urge action toward, and encourage changes to overcome in the current environmental and human crisis, as well as to building a diverse future that is not palliative. Background and Objectives: The Child–Pugh (CP) score and Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) are classical systems for predicting mortality in patients with liver cirrhosis (LC). The MELD-GFR assessment in liver disease–sodium (MELD-GRAIL-Na) was designed to better reflect renal function and, therefore, provide better mortality predictions. This study aimed to compare the prediction accuracy of MELD-GRAIL-Na compared to CP and MELD in predicting short-term (1- and 3-month) mortality in Korean patients. Materials and Methods: Medical records of patients with LC admitted to the Konkuk University Hospital from 2015 to 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. Predictive values of the CP, MELD, and MELD-GRAIL-Na for 1-month and 3-month mortality were calculated using the area under the receiver operating curve (AUROC) and were compared using DeLong’s test. Results: In total, 1249 patients were enrolled; 102 died within 1 month, and 146 within 3 months. AUROCs of CP, MELD, and MELD-GRAIL-Na were 0.831, 0.847, and 0.857 for 1-month mortality and 0.837, 0.827, and 0.835 for 3-month mortality, respectively, indicating no statistical significance. For patients with CP classes B and C, AUROCs of CP, MELD, and MELD-GRAIL-Na were 0.782, 0.809, and 0.825 for 1-month mortality and 0.775, 0.769, and 0.786 for 3-month mortality, respectively. There was a significant difference between CP and MELD-GRAIL-Na in predicting 1-month mortality (p = 0.0428) and between MELD and MELD-GRAIL-Na in predicting 1-month (p = 0.0493) and 3-month mortality (p = 0.0225). Conclusions: Compared to CP and MELD, MELD-GRAIL-Na was found to be a better and more useful system for evaluating short-term (1- and 3-month) mortality in Korean patients with cirrhosis, especially those with advanced cirrhosis (CP class B and C). In the era of digital transformation, a memristor and memristive circuit can provide an advanced computer architecture that efficiently processes a vast quantity of data. With the unique characteristic of memristor, a memristive crossbar array has been utilized for realization of nonvolatile memory, logic-in-memory circuit, and neuromorphic system. However, the crossbar array architecture suffers from leakage of current, known as the sneak current, which causes a cross-talk interference problem between adjacent memristor devices, leading to an unavoidable operational error and high power consumption. Here, we present an amorphous In-Sn-Zn-O (a-ITZO) oxide semiconductor-based selector device to address the sneak current issue. The a-ITZO-selector device is realized with the back-to-back Schottky diode with nonlinear current-voltage (I-V) characteristics. Its nonlinearity is dependent on the oxygen plasma treatment process which can suppress the surface electron accumulation layer arising on the a-ITZO surface. The a-ITZO-selector device shows reliable characteristics against electrical stress and high temperature. In addition, the selector device allows for a stable read margin over 1 Mbit of memristor crossbar array. The findings may offer a feasible solution for the development of a high-density memristor crossbar array. Full article

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) is a communicable disease and still remains a threat to common health. Thus, early diagnosis and treatment are required to prevent the spread of infection. Despite the recent advances in molecular diagnostic systems, the commonly used MTB diagnostic tools are laboratory-based assays, such as mycobacterial culture, MTB PCR, and Xpert MTB/RIF. To address this limitation, point-of-care testing (POCT)-based molecular diagnostic technologies capable of sensitive and accurate detection even in environments with limited sources are needed. In this study, we propose simple tuberculosis (TB) molecular diagnostic assay by combining sample preparation and DNA-detection steps. The sample preparation is performed using a syringe filter with amine-functionalized diatomaceous earth and homobifunctional imidoester. Subsequently, the target DNA is detected by quantitative PCR (polymerase chain reaction). The results can be obtained within 2 h from samples with large volumes, without any additional instruments. The limit of detection of this system is 10 times higher than those of conventional PCR assays. We validated the clinical utility of the proposed method in 88 sputum samples obtained from four hospitals in the Republic of Korea. Overall, the sensitivity of this system was superior to those of other assays. Therefore, the proposed system can be useful for MTB diagnosis in limited-resource settings. Full article

The diverse therapeutic feasibility of the sea urchin-derived naphthoquinone pigment, Echinochrome A (Ech A), has been studied. Simple and noninvasive administration routes should be explored, to obtain the feasibility. Although the therapeutic potential has been proven through several preclinical studies, the biosafety of orally administered Ech A and its direct influence on intestinal cells have not been evaluated. To estimate the bioavailability of Ech A as an oral administration drug, small intestinal and colonic epithelial organoids were developed from mice and humans. The morphology and cellular composition of intestinal organoids were evaluated after Ech A treatment. Ech A treatment significantly increased the expression of LGR5 (~2.38-fold change, p = 0.009) and MUC2 (~1.85-fold change, p = 0.08). Notably, in the presence of oxidative stress, Ech A attenuated oxidative stress up to 1.8-fold (p = 0.04), with a restored gene expression of LGR5 (~4.11-fold change, p = 0.0004), as well as an increased expression of Ly6a (~3.51-fold change, p = 0.005) and CLU (~2.5-fold change, p = 0.01), markers of revival stem cells. In conclusion, Ech A is harmless to intestinal tissues; rather, it promotes the maintenance and regeneration of the intestinal epithelium, suggesting possible beneficial effects on the intestine when used as an oral medication. In this study, we propose a method for inspecting the condition of hull surfaces using underwater images acquired from the camera of a remotely controlled underwater vehicle (ROUV). To this end, a soft voting ensemble classifier comprising six well-known convolutional neural network models was used. Using the transfer learning technique, the images of the hull surfaces were used to retrain the six models. The proposed method exhibited an accuracy of 98.13%, a precision of 98.73%, a recall of 97.50%, and an F1-score of 98.11% for the classification of the test set. Furthermore, the time taken for the classification of one image was verified to be approximately 56.25 ms, which is applicable to ROUVs that require real-time inspection. Full article

The subjects were divided based on the presence of WMH, then classified into three groups according to the FS grade (0 vs. 1 vs. 2+) using age matching. Two pre-trained convolutional neural networks were fine-tuned and evaluated for prediction performance using 10-fold cross-validation. Results: A total of 3726 fundus photographs from 1892 subjects were included, of which 905 fundus photographs from 462 subjects were included in the age-matched balanced dataset. In predicting the presence of WMH, the mean area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.736 ± 0.030 for DenseNet-201 and 0.724 ± 0.026 for EfficientNet-B7. For the prediction of FS grade, the mean accuracies reached 41.4 ± 5.7% with DenseNet-201 and 39.6 ± 5.6% with EfficientNet-B7. The deep learning models focused on the macula and retinal vasculature to detect an FS of 2+. Conclusions: Cerebral WMH might be partially predicted by non-invasive fundus photography via deep learning, which may suggest an eye–brain association. Full article

Background and Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether device removal in symptomatic patients following locking plate osteosynthesis of a proximal humerus fracture improves the clinical outcomes. Materials and Methods: Seventy-one patients who underwent fixed-angle locking plate osteosynthesis of a proximal humerus fracture were included. Thirty-three patients underwent device removal at a mean time of 10.4 months after index surgery (removal group). Thirty-eight patients who retained the device after index surgery (retention group) were included in the control group. Visual analog scale (VAS) pain score, University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) score, American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) score, and range of motion (ROM) were evaluated pre- and postoperatively. Results: At the final follow-up, mean UCLA score, ASES score, and all ROMs were significantly higher in the removal group compared to the retention group (p < 0.001). However, no significant difference in mean VAS pain score was observed between the two groups. Comparison of the clinical outcomes before and after device removal surgery showed significant improvement in all clinical scores and ROMs after device removal (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Device removal surgery in symptomatic patients following locking plate osteosynthesis of a proximal humerus fracture can result in significant improvement in functional outcomes. (1) Background: To analyze changes in treatment patterns for advanced retinoblastoma over time and differences in globe salvage rates; (2) Methods: Retrospective, observational case-control study of 97 eyes of 91 patients with advanced retinoblastoma (Group D and E).; (3) Results: Patients were divided into two groups based on whether they were treated before or after intraarterial chemotherapy (IAC) was introduced in our center in 2010. Before 2010, primary treatment pattern was enucleation, which was performed in 57.6% of cases, whereas primary treatment pattern after 2010 was IAC combined with intravenous chemotherapy (IVC), which was performed in 78.1%. Intravitreal chemotherapy (IVitC) has been performed to treat vitreous and subretinal seeding since 2015. The 5-year globe salvage rate of IVC alone was 24.0% for Group D and 0% for Group E, whereas that of IVC–IAC was 50.4% for Group D and 49.7% for Group E. Whether IVitC was performed or not did not significantly contribute to globe salvage rate. There was one metastatic death in the IVC alone group.; (4) Conclusions: Primary treatment pattern changed from enucleation to IAC-based treatment, which can now save nearly half of eyes with advanced retinoblastoma with excellent safety profile and survival rate.
