This study assesses the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on catastrophic health expenditures and income inequality in Benin. A microsimulation was calibrated to estimate the impact of the pandemic under three different shock scenarios: low, moderate, and severe. The analysis relies on secondary data from household living condition surveys. The results indicate that the COVID-19 crisis would lead to a significant average income loss of up to 20% and income inequality, while the number of households with catastrophic health expenditures would increase by 4%. More importantly, the findings reveal heterogeneous impacts across households, with urban residents, younger individuals, more educated households, and male-headed households experiencing the greatest income decline. These findings underscore the need for targeted health coverage and employment policies to better protect vulnerable populations in Benin in the face of future shocks. Full article

Invasive plant species pose an increasing threat to mangroves globally. This study assessed the impact of Paspalum vaginatum invasion on carbon loss and early recovery following four years of restoration in a mangrove forest with Rhizophora racemosa in Benin. Organic carbon was quantified in the total biomass, including both aboveground and belowground components, as well as in the soil to a depth of −50 cm. In addition, soil gas fluxes of CO2, CH4, and N2O were measured. Three sites were evaluated: a conserved mangrove, a site degraded by P. vaginatum, and the same site post-restoration via hydrological rehabilitation and reforestation. Invasion significantly reduced carbon storage, especially in soil, due to lower biomass, incorporation of low C/N ratio organic residues, and compaction. Restoration recovered 7.8% of the total biomass carbon compared to the conserved mangrove site, although soil organic carbon did not rise significantly in the short term. However, improvements in deep soil C/N ratios (15–30 and 30–50 cm) suggest enhanced soil organic matter recalcitrance linked to R. racemosa reforestation. Soil CO2 emissions dropped by 60% at the restored site, underscoring restoration’s potential to mitigate early carbon loss. These results highlight the need to control invasive species and suggest that restoration can generate additional social benefits. Full article

This study analyses the conditions under which co-opetition improves the supply of healthcare services in Benin. Using non-centralised administrative data from a sample of public and private health centres, we apply network theory and negative binomial regression to assess the extent to which competition affects collaboration between public and private healthcare providers. We found that competition reduces the degree of collaboration between private and public health providers. However, the COVID-19 pandemic significantly mitigated this effect, highlighting the potential for competition within the healthcare system without compromising social welfare. Notwithstanding that, we show that these benefits are not sustained over time. These findings have policy implications for the sustainability of health system financing in Africa, particularly by promoting sustainable financial mechanisms for the private sector and more inclusive governance structures. West Africa faces persistent food and nutrition insecurity despite agricultural efforts, exacerbated by population growth, climate change, and socio-economic vulnerabilities. This study argues that integrating food processing principles with nutrition-sensitive agriculture (NSA) and nutrition-smart agriculture (NSmartAg) offers a transformative solution for human health. Therefore, we delineate these interconnected concepts and highlight their synergistic potential for a nutrition-focused food system. Likewise, critical analysis of key regional challenges, including infrastructural weaknesses, policy gaps, and gender inequities, was made prior to identifying significant opportunities for leveraging food processing as a strategic entry point to accelerate the implementation of NSA and NSmartAg. Based on these insights, six strategic pathways are proposed to achieve this objective: (i) integrating food processing into policies; (ii) investing in interdisciplinary R&D that puts nutrition and health benefits at the forefront of desired outcomes along with others; (iii) strengthening farmer and food processor capacities; (iv) improving agri-food infrastructure; (v) fostering multi-sectoral collaboration; and (vi) prioritizing youth engagement and market development. By adopting these integrated strategies, West African countries can build more resilient, equitable, and nutrition-centered food systems, ultimately improving public health outcomes and fostering sustainable regional development. What elements of nature do people involved in conservation projects seek to protect, and why? How do they identify and relate to nature? Answers to such fundamental questions are shaped by normative assumptions that can result in distinct conservation strategies and practices. Despite their importance, normative assumptions are rarely explicitly stated in conservation sciences, possibly because an epistemology of modern science suggests that normative backgrounds are not relevant to the production of objective knowledge, or because researchers and practitioners are unaware of the diversity of positions that exist. Using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, we created a catalogue of existing normative positions in conservation literature and described their key characteristics. We described 72 distinctive normative positions about human–nature relationships. Each position was characterized by unique combinations of value-states belonging to one or more of the following five dimensions: ontology (the positionality of human with respect to nature), axiology (value systems and ethical frameworks), pragmatism (extent of human interventions), epistemology (knowledge sources), and agency (agents of change). We then scored each position in terms of its alignment (support, opposition, or neutrality) with respect to all value-states within each dimension. A fuzzy correspondence analysis revealed that the field of conservation is heterogeneous beyond the conventional gradient of intrinsic–instrumental–relational values. The frequency and circumstances under which stakeholders adopt different normative positions are unknown, but the list of dimensions and associated values provided in this study may serve as a checklist for scoping this diversity. Consideration of values stemming from alternative normative positions may help broaden support for conservation actions. Full article

Nokoué Lake is located in the south of Benin and is fed by the Ouémé and Sô Rivers. Its hydrosedimentary dynamics were modelled using Telemac2D, incorporating the main environmental factors of this complex ecosystem. The simulations accounted for flow rates and suspended solids concentrations during periods of high and low water. The main factors controlling sediment transport were identified. The model was validated using field measurements of water levels and suspended solids. The results show that the north–south current velocity ranges from 0.5 to 1 m/s during periods of high water and 0.1 to 0.5 m/s during low-water periods. Residual currents are influenced by rainfall, river discharge, and tides. Complex circulation patterns are caused by increased river flow during high water, while tides dominate during low water and transitional periods. The northern, western, and south-eastern parts of the lake have weak residual currents and are, therefore, deposition zones for fine sediments. The estimated average annual suspended solids load for 2022–2023 is 17 Mt. The model performance shows a strong agreement between the observed and simulated values: R2 = 0.91 and NSE = 0.93 for water levels and R2 = 0.86 and NSE = 0.78 for sediment transport. Full article

This study assessed the host plant selection behavior of female stalk-eyed flies (SEFs) or Diopsis apicalis, where a Y-tube olfactometer was used to compare SEF attraction to the odor of leaves from four rice varieties (ITA306, WAB56-104, CG14, and RAM55). Another step of the evaluation consisted of pairing leaf odors from two rice varieties. Also, potted plants of the tested varieties were displayed in a screened cage and submitted to female SEF selection. The results indicated that the odor produced by leaves from rice varieties CG14, WAB56-104, and ITA306 significantly attracted SEFs, at rates of 81%, 70%, and 97%, respectively, while SEF females were rarely attracted by the odor of leaves from the resistant rice variety RAM55, at a rate of 35%. The results suggested that the use of a Y-tube olfactometer was similar to the use of a screened cage. The resistance exhibited by rice variety CG14 against SEFs is related to an antibiosis interaction acting as bait, while that in RAM55 is an antixenosis one. Farmers can plant the traditional CG14 variety on the edge of rice fields to draw SEFs and poison their larvae. However, RAM55 can be inserted in an intercropping system to repel SEFs from laying eggs. The authors recommend CG14 and RAM55 as candidates for breeding to create resistant lines against SEF. This research investigated the temporal dynamics of the anthropogenic impact of fishing pressure on the resilience of the fish species Sarotherodon melanotheron (Rüppel, 1858) in the African Lake Toho, located in southwest Benin. The sampling and analysis of monthly length frequency data were conducted from April 2002 to March 2003 and from April 2022 to March 2023 using the FAO-ICLARM Stock Assessment Tool (FiSAT II software program (version 1.2.2.). The analysis of the S. melanotheron population in Lake Toho revealed a significantly diminishing resilience potential, reflected mainly in general reductions in both the average size and weight of individuals. There was a notable reduction in the size of Sarotherodon melanotheron individuals caught between 2002–2003 and 2022–2023, reflecting the increased pressure on juvenile size classes. Catches are now concentrated mainly on immature fish, revealing increasing exploitation before sexual maturity is reached. An analysis of maturity stages showed a decrease in the percentage of mature individuals in the catches (69.27% in 2002–2003 compared to 55.07% in 2022–2023) and a reduction in the number of mega-spawners (4.53% in 2002–2003 compared to 1.56% in 2022–2023). Growth parameters revealed a decrease in asymptotic length (from 32.2 cm to 23.8 cm) and longevity (from 9.37 years to 7.89 years), while the growth coefficient slightly increased. The mean size at first capture and optimal size significantly declined, indicating increased juvenile exploitation. The total and natural mortalities increased, whereas the fishing mortality remained stable. The exploitation rate remained high, despite a slight decrease from 0.69 to 0.65. Finally, the declines in the yield per recruit, maximum sustainable yield, and biomass confirm the increasing fishing pressure, leading to growth overfishing, recruitment overfishing, reproductive overfishing, and, last but not least, a decreasing resilience potential. These findings highlight the growing overexploitation of S. melanotheron in Lake Toho, compromising stock renewal, fish population resilience, sustainability, and production while jeopardizing local food safety. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) preserve many foods and play a vital role in fermented food products. This study designed a controlled biotechnological process of catfish (Clarias gariepinus) fermentation with a LAB starter culture isolated from corn hydrolysate. The BY (Barbu-Yelouassi) LAB strain was characterized regarding fermentative and antimicrobial potential, and its adaptability in the simulated gastrointestinal system (SGIS). After 10–12 h of cultivation on MRS broth (De Man Rogosa and Sharpe), the strain achieved the maximum exponential growth, produced maximum lactic acid (33.04%), and decreased the acidity up to pH 4. Also, the isolated strain showed increased tolerance to an acidic pH (3.5–2.0), high concentrations of salt (2–10%), and high concentrations of bile salts (≤2%). The behavior in SGIS demonstrated good viability after 2 h in artificial gastric juice (AGJ) (1 × 107 CFU/mL) and up to 2 × 103 CFU/mL after another 6 h in artificial intestinal juice (AIJ). The characterized BY strain was identified with the API 50CHL microtest (BioMerieux) as Lactiplantibacillus pentosus (Lbp. pentosus) (90.9% probability), taxon confirmed by genomic DNA sequencing. It was also demonstrated that Lbp. pentosus BY inhibited the growth of pathogenic bacteria, including Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, and sporulated bacteria, such as Bacillus cereus. Additionally, it suppressed the sporulation of fungi like Aspergillus niger, Fusarium sp., and Penicillium sp. Furthermore, the Lbp. pentosus BY strain was used to ferment catfish, resulting in three variants of lanhouin (unsalted, with 10% salt, and with 15% salt), which exhibited good microbiological safety. Hydroclimatic Trends and Land Use Changes in the Continental Part of the Gambia River Basin: Implications for Water Resources

Hydrological processes in river systems are changing due to climate variability and human activities, making it crucial to understand and quantify these changes for effective water resource management. This study examines long-term trends in hydroclimate variables (1990–2022) and land use/land cover (LULC) changes (1988, 2002, and 2022) within the Continental Reach of the Gambia River Basin (CGRB). Trend analyses of the Standardized Precipitation-Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) at 12-month and 24-month scales, along with river discharge at the Simenti station, reveal a shift from dry conditions to wetter phases post-2008, marked by significant increases in rainfall and discharge variability. LULC analysis revealed significant transformations in the basin. LULC analysis highlights significant transformations within the basin. Forest and savanna areas decreased by 20.57 and 4.48%, respectively, between 1988 and 2002, largely due to human activities such as agricultural expansion and deforestation for charcoal production. Post-2002, forest cover recovered from 32.36 to 36.27%, coinciding with the wetter conditions after 2008, suggesting that climatic shifts promoted vegetation regrowth. Spatial analysis further highlights an increase in bowe and steppe areas, especially in the north, indicating land degradation linked to human land use practices. Bowe areas, marked by impermeable laterite outcrops, and steppe areas with sparse herbaceous cover result from overgrazing and soil degradation, exacerbated by the region’s drier phases. A notable decrease in burned areas from 2.03 to 0.23% suggests improvements in fire management practices, reducing fire frequency, which is also supported by wetter conditions post-2008. Agricultural land and bare soils expanded by 14%, from 2.77 to 3.07%, primarily in the northern and central regions, likely driven by both population pressures and climatic shifts. Correlations between precipitation and land cover changes indicate that wetter conditions facilitated forest regrowth, while drier conditions exacerbated land degradation, with human activities such as deforestation and agricultural expansion potentially amplifying the impact of climatic shifts. These results demonstrate that while climatic shifts played a role in driving vegetation recovery, human activities were key in shaping land use patterns, impacting both precipitation and stream discharge, particularly due to agricultural practices and land degradation. West Africa’s agri-food systems face a triple burden of malnutrition, climate vulnerability, and structural inefficiencies that compromise nutrition and public health. Despite increased attention to food security, agricultural strategies often prioritize yield over dietary quality. This paper explores the critical role of food processing in advancing Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture (NSA) and Nutrition-Smart Agriculture (NSmartAg) across West Africa. Drawing on a systems lens, it positions food processing not as a peripheral activity, but as a catalytic mechanism that connects nutrient-dense production with improved consumption outcomes. Food processing can reduce post-harvest losses, preserve micronutrients, extend food availability, and foster inclusive value chains particularly for women and youth. Yet, persistent challenges remain, including institutional fragmentation, infrastructure gaps, and limited financial and technical capacity. This paper proposes a conceptual framework linking food processing to NSA and NSmartAg objectives and outlines operational entry points for implementation. By integrating processing into agricultural policies, investment, education, and monitoring systems, stakeholders and policymakers can reimagine agriculture as a platform for resilience and nutritional equity. Strategic recommendations emphasize multisectoral collaboration, localized solutions, and evidence-informed interventions to drive the transformation toward sustainable, nutrition-oriented food systems. P. aeruginosa strain NL201 was cultured from an urban water drain in a populated subway underpass as an environmental isolate for the ST111 global high-risk P. aeruginosa clone. In addition to carrying generally present intrinsic P. aeruginosa antibiotic resistance genes, this serotype O4 isolate also carries a set of additional acquired resistance determinants, including aadA2, blaOXA-10, sul1, and an aac(6′)-Ib family gene. The NL201 isolate features the blaPDC-3 allele, which was found to confer significantly higher catalytic efficiency against cefepime and imipenem compared to blaPDC-1, as well as the potent P. aeruginosa virulence factors exoS, exoT, and algD. Serotype O4 isolates of the ST111 global high-risk P. aeruginosa clone have been reported from clinical samples in Canada and the USA, human stool samples in France, and environmental samples (such as cosmetic, hospital drains, and urban water drain) from various European countries. These observations underscore the effective dissemination of the ST111 global high-risk P. aeruginosa clone between different hosts, environments, and habitats, and they warrant targeted investigations from a One Health perspective on the possible routes of its spread and molecular evolution. Relative Humidity and Air Temperature Characteristics and Their Drivers in Africa Tropics

In a warming climate, rising temperature are expected to influence atmospheric humidity. This study examined the spatio-temporal dynamics of temperature (TEMP) and relative humidity (RH) across Equatorial Africa from 1980 to 2020. The analysis used RH data from European Centre of Medium-range Weather Forecasts Reanalysis v.5 (ERA5) reanalysis, TEMP and precipitation (PRE) from Climate Research Unit (CRU), and soil moisture (SM) and evapotranspiration (ET) from the Global Land Evaporation Amsterdam Model (GLEAM). In addition, four teleconnection indices were considered: El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), and Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). This study used the Mann–Kendall test and Sen’s slope estimator to analyze trends, alongside multiple linear regression to investigate the relationships between TEMP, RH, and key climatic variables—namely evapotranspiration (ET), soil moisture (SM), and precipitation (PRE)—as well as large-scale teleconnection indices (e.g., IOD, ENSO, PDO, and NAO) on annual and seasonal scales. The key findings are as follows: (1) mean annual TEMP exceeding 30 °C and RH less than 30% were concentrated in arid regions of the Sahelian–Sudano belt in West Africa (WAF), Central Africa (CAF) and North East Africa (NEAF). Semi-arid regions in the Sahelian–Guinean belt recorded moderate TEMP (25–30 °C) and RH (30–60%), while the Guinean coastal belt and Congo Basin experienced cooler, more humid conditions (TEMP < 20 °C, RH (60–90%). (2) Trend analysis using Mann–Kendal and Sen slope estimator analysis revealed spatial heterogeneity, with increasing TEMP and deceasing RH trends varying by region and season. (3) The warming rate was higher in arid and semi-arid areas, with seasonal rates exceeding annual averages (0.18 °C decade−1). Winter (0.27 °C decade−1) and spring (0.20 °C decade−1) exhibited the strongest warming, followed by autumn (0.18 °C decade−1) and summer (0.10 °C decade−1). (4) RH trends showed stronger seasonal decline compared to annual changes, with reduction ranging from 5 to 10% per decade in certain seasons, and about 2% per decade annually. (5) Pearson correlation analysis demonstrated a strong negative relationship between TEMP and RH with a correlation coefficient of r = − 0.60. (6) Significant associations were also observed between TEMP/RH and both climatic variables (ET, SM, PRE) and large scale-teleconnection indices (ENSO, IOD, PDO, NAO), indicating that surface conditions may reflect a combination of local response and remote climate influences. However, further analysis is needed to distinguish the extent to which local variability is independently driven versus being a response to large-scale forcing. Overall, this research highlights the physical mechanism linking TEMP and RH trends and their climatic drivers, offering insights into how these changes may impact different ecological and socio-economic sectors. The Internet of Things (IoT) is an upcoming technology that is increasingly being used for monitoring and analysing environmental parameters and supports the progress of farm machinery. Agriculture is the main source of living for many people, including, for instance, farmers, agronomists and transporters. It can raise incomes, improve food security and benefit the environment. However, food systems are responsible for many environmental problems. While the use of IoT in agriculture and environment is widely deployed in many developed countries, it is underdeveloped in Africa, particularly in West Africa. This paper aims to provide a systematic review on this technology adoption for agriculture and environment in West African countries. To achieve this goal, the analysis of scientific contributions is performed by performing first a bibliometric study, focusing on the selected articles obtained using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) method, and second a qualitative study. The PRISMA analysis was performed based on 226 publications recorded from one database: Web Of Science (WoS). It has been demonstrated that the annual scientific production significantly increased during this last decade. Our conclusions highlight promising directions where IoT could significantly progress sustainability. Full article

The present study addresses the topic of European companies, including Latvian companies, sustainably entering African markets. The actuality of this topic relates to the recession and the decrease in demand in the classical export markets (such as Scandinavia and Western Europe) with which Latvian firms used to trade; this is why the re-orientation of companies to African countries was carried out. Academic research worldwide has conducted many investigations on the specifics of exporting to Africa. The lack of knowledge relating to local African business practices is considered one of the significant barriers. The aim of this study was to mitigate this barrier by exploring real-world situations in African economic sectors. Interviews with relevant African experts were conducted for this purpose. The results showed that East European entrepreneurs, including Latvian entrepreneurs, should first focus on West African French-speaking countries with big seaports (e.g., Senegal, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Benin, Togo, and Cameroon), where Latvian knowledge, professional skills, and products relating to port and transportation infrastructures are in significant demand. A case study was conducted in Cameroon as an example of a good business match with Latvian service providers. The case study also highlighted the nature of Cameroon’s sociocultural dynamics, which are distinguished by the presence of several sociocultural zones, each with its own specific characteristics that need to be taken into account.
