This study investigated the maturity and optimal harvest interval of the ‘Kalinjot’ olive cultivar in the Vlora region. Fruit samples were collected from six randomly selected trees over nine harvest dates at 10-day intervals from September to December 2024. Physical, chemical, and instrumental analyses were conducted to evaluate parameters related to olive ripening and oil quality. Destructive methods measured the fruit diameter, fresh weight, maturity index, flesh firmness, and detachment index, while non-destructive techniques assessed the color and absorbance indices using portable Vis/NIR devices. Chemical analyses determined the fruit moisture, oil content, and total polyphenols. The results showed that the fruit diameter, fresh weight, and oil content increased with ripening, whereas the flesh firmness and detachment index decreased significantly. A negative correlation between the maturity index and color index was observed, along with strong positive correlations between the Kiwi-Meter’s IAD values, maturity index, and oil content. The optimal harvest interval was identified when olives reached up to 25.42% oil content and 1820.89 mg GAE/kg FW total polyphenols, ensuring both the technological and nutritional quality of the oil. Chronic low-grade inflammation is a hallmark of both metabolic and neurodegenerative diseases. In recent years, several studies have highlighted the pivotal role of systemic metabolic dysfunction, particularly insulin resistance, in shaping neuroinflammatory processes and contributing to impaired cognitive performance. Among metabolic disorders, type 2 diabetes mellitus has emerged as a major risk factor for the development of age-related neurodegenerative conditions, suggesting a complex and bidirectional crosstalk between peripheral metabolic imbalance and central nervous system function. This review aims to explore the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the interaction between metabolic dysregulation and brain inflammation. By integrating current findings from endocrinology, immunology, and neuroscience, this work provides a comprehensive overview of how chronic metabolic inflammation may contribute to the onset and progression of neurodegenerative conditions. This interdisciplinary approach could offer novel insights into potential therapeutic strategies targeting both metabolic and neuroinflammatory pathways. Full article

Aging is a complex physiological process that profoundly affects the functionality of the musculoskeletal system, contributing to an increase in the incidence of diseases such as osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and sarcopenia. Cellular senescence plays a crucial role in these degenerative processes, promoting chronic inflammation and tissue dysfunction through the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP). Recently, senotherapeutics have shown promising results in improving musculoskeletal health. Natural compounds such as resveratrol, rapamycin, quercetin, curcumin, vitamin E, genistein, fisetin, and epicatechin act on key signaling pathways, offering protective effects against musculoskeletal decline. On the other hand, molecules such as dasatinib, navitoclax, UBX0101, panobinostat, and metformin have been shown to be effective in eliminating or modulating senescent cells. However, understanding the mechanisms of action, long-term safety, and bioavailability remain areas for further investigation. In this context, physical exercise emerges as an effective non-pharmacological countermeasure, capable of directly modulating cellular senescence and promoting tissue regeneration, representing an integrated strategy to combat age-related diseases. Therefore, we have provided an overview of the main anti-aging compounds and examined the potential of physical exercise as a strategy in the management of age-related musculoskeletal disorders. Further studies should focus on identifying synergistic combinations of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions to optimize the effectiveness of anti-aging strategies and promoting healthier musculoskeletal aging. Background: Vaccine hesitancy (VH) represents a growing concern among healthcare professionals and students, potentially undermining public health efforts. Nursing, pediatric nursing, and midwifery students are future vaccinators and educators, making it essential to understand their attitudes, knowledge, and confidence toward vaccination. This study aims to assess vaccine-related perceptions and behaviors among these student populations in an Italian university. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted between November 2022 and February 2024 at the University of Rome “Tor Vergata”. A structured, anonymous questionnaire, including the Vaccination Attitudes Examination (VAX) scale, vaccine knowledge items, and sources of information, was administered to students in nursing (n = 205), pediatric nursing (n = 46), and midwifery (n = 21). Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, ANOVA, post hoc tests, and Mann–Whitney U tests. Results: Among the 272 participants, 20.6% reported refusing at least one recommended vaccine, and 18.4% delayed vaccination for non-medical reasons. Vaccine knowledge and confidence increased significantly with academic progression (p < 0.001). Midwifery students showed both the highest concern for long-term vaccine effects and the greatest confidence in vaccine safety. Institutional and scientific sources were the most trusted, though traditional and non-institutional media also influenced perceptions, particularly among midwifery students. Conclusions: Despite high COVID-19 vaccine uptake, VH persists among health professional students. Discipline-specific patterns highlight the need for early, targeted educational strategies to enhance vaccine literacy and reduce hesitancy. Tailored training may empower future professionals to become informed and credible advocates for vaccination. Full article

An analysis of Albanian Muslims in Italy provides a compelling case study of communities perceived as marginal. Studies of Muslims in Italy tend to focus on the majority and chronologically older groups within the country’s Islamic landscape, particularly those from Asia and Africa. In addition to providing a better understanding of Islam in Italy, a study of the identity and community-building issues of the Albanian community of origin offers many insights into that community’s complexity. Albanians in Italy have a very specific historical and religious heritage; so, analyzing their roots and community-building processes helps us to better understand the development of Islam on the margins of large national organizations and majority groups. This article presents the results of the first national study of Albanian Muslims in Italy. Online interviews and field observations were conducted in 2024 within the Union of Muslim Albanians in Italy (Unione degli Albanesi Musulmani in Italia—UAMI), using the ethnographic method. The Association has fewer members compared with national level organizations. It was founded in 2009 to address specific issues related to the management of Muslim Albanian religious identity. The Association has sought to address the fragmentation of religion and Albanian nationalism, a consequence of a long period of state atheism, and to counter the literalist and radical tendencies in the interpretation of religion that have emerged in Albania since the collapse of the communist regime. In addition to these challenges, the Association has also tackled issues related to the Islamic religion in its local and global dimensions. The analysis of these challenges and the ways to deal with them offers a new framework in the Italian Islamic panorama, despite its marginality. The results of this research point to the emergence of new forms of rooting and belonging characterized by spirituality over orthopraxis. These forms adopt a religious approach open to diversity and pluralism. Full article

Background/Objectives: The beneficial and multifaceted effects of Sideritis scardica Griseb. extracts are attributed to the presence of polyphenolic compounds, particularly phenolic acids. Methods: The research was carried out for S. scardica herb of different origins (Albania, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, and Türkiye). Identification of compounds was performed using the HPLC/ESI-QTOF-MS method; phenolic acids and flavonoids were determined spectrophotometrically. The antioxidant activity of methanol extracts from studied herbs was determined using the Folin–Ciocalteu, DPPH, and FRAP methods, and the antimicrobial activity was evaluated using the broth microdilution method in accordance with the guidelines of the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST). Results: We demonstrated the presence 18–20 active compounds, depending on the origin of the raw material, with verbascoside being the predominant compound in all samples. The raw material was characterized by significant polyphenol content and high antioxidant activity. DPPH tests revealed the highest antioxidant activity, ranging from 86.5% to 87.9%, in samples from Bulgaria, North Macedonia, and Türkiye, and the latter showed the strongest antimicrobial activity, particularly against Gram-positive pathogens and Candida spp. Conclusions: This research is the first report comparing the chemical composition and biological activity of S. scardica raw material of different origins. Our findings indicate that S. scardica herb extracts have significant phytotherapeutic potential, although this varies depending on the origin of the raw material, and point to the need for further research on this plant material, particularly in terms of the level of active compounds and their possible synergistic effects with conventional drugs, as well as the need for standardization. This study presents a simulation-based evaluation of advanced control strategies for residential air conditioning systems, including On–Off, PI, and Model Predictive Control (MPC) approaches. A black-box system model was identified using an ARX(2,2,0) structure, achieving over 90% prediction accuracy (FIT) for indoor temperature and power consumption. Six controllers were implemented and benchmarked in a high-fidelity Simscape environment under a realistic 48-h summer temperature profile. The proposed MPC scheme, particularly when incorporating outdoor temperature gradient logic, reduced energy consumption by up to 30% compared to conventional PI control while maintaining indoor thermal comfort within the acceptable range. This virtual design workflow shortens the development cycle by deferring climatic chamber testing to the final validation phase. Full article

Background: The migration of healthcare professionals poses a serious threat to health systems worldwide. This study examines attitudes toward brain drain and the factors influencing migration tendencies among medical and nursing students in Albania, with particular attention to nursing workforce implications. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 610 students in the 2024–2025 academic year using the 16-item Brain Drain Attitude Scale (BDAS). Socio-demographic and academic data were also collected. Results: The mean BDAS score was 53.43 ± 16.88. Pull factors (mean: 40.25 ± 12.76) were stronger motivators than push factors (mean: 13.19 ± 4.13). A total of 487 nursing, 73 midwifery-nursing, and 50 medical students participated (95% response rate). Nearly 40% expressed a desire to work abroad, citing financial prospects (48.2%), better living standards (46%), and personal freedom (42.1%) as reasons. Higher migration tendencies were seen in females (β = 0.50, p = 0.049), medical students (β = 1.01, p = 0.001), and third-year students (β = 0.46, p = 0.011). Conclusions: Migration tendencies are high among future Albanian healthcare professionals, with significant implications for the nursing workforce. Targeted policies are urgently needed to address brain drain through workforce investment and retention strategies. Full article

Cellulite is a widespread aesthetical dermatological condition affecting a significant proportion of postpubertal women, characterized by dimpled skin, primarily on the thighs, buttocks, and hips, which has an important psychological impact. Cellulite, also called lipodystrophy or oedematosclerotic panniculitis, causes an aesthetic change in the skin that affects the epidermis, dermis, hypodermis and subcutaneous fat in different ways. The aim of the present prospective study research was to evaluate the efficacy of electromagnetic field and negative pressure in the treatment of cellulite. Methods: A total of 35 women with an average age of 40, ranging from 18 to 50 (mean 32.2 ± 7.48), with a body mass index between 18.5 and 26.9 (mean 22 ± 3.01), were enrolled in this study. The degree of cellulite of the patients was assessed clinically using the Cellulite Severity Scale (CSS) and Nürnberger–Müller classification. All patients received one session per week for a total 12 treatment sessions with Bi-one® LifeTouchTherapy medical device (Expo Italia Srl—Florence—Italy), which generates a combination of vacuum and electromagnetic fields (V-EMF). Total treatment time was approximately 20–30 min per patient. The GAIS score, Cellulite Severity Scale (CSS) and Nürnberger–Müller classification for cellulite was evaluated 1 month after the 12 treatments with LifeTouchTherapy. Results: A statistical difference was recorded in cellulite improvement by visual analog scale (VAS) and global aesthetic improvement scale (GAIS). Conclusions: The results of the present prospective clinical study show the efficacy and safety of Bi-one® LifeTouchTherapy in the treatment of cellulite. Electromagnetic fields combined with negative pressure therapy promote tissue regeneration and reduce fibrosis, which results in visible cosmetic improvements of cellulite. Full article

Background: Despite the widespread implementation of childhood vaccination programmes, hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection remains an ongoing occupational risk for healthcare students. In multi-ethnic and international university settings, differences in vaccination programmes and immune responses must be considered. This retrospective study aimed to assess the prevalence of protective levels of anti-HBs among medical students at an international university in Rome, exploring associations with demographic and vaccination-related factors. Methods: Data were collected from routine occupational health surveillance conducted in 2023. Anti-HB titres were measured in 507 students, and information on age, sex, country of birth, age at vaccination, and time since the last dose was analysed. Results: Overall, 55.0% of students had antibody levels of at least 10 mIU/mL, indicating serological protection. Higher seroprotection rates were observed among students vaccinated in the first year of life compared to those vaccinated later. A significant decline in antibody titres was also associated with longer intervals since vaccination. Students born outside Europe tended to show lower levels of protection. Conclusions: These results emphasise the importance of screening future healthcare professionals and continuously monitoring antibody titres to help reduce HBV infections. Full article

This study aimed to assess skeletal and upper airway modifications induced by the Twin Block appliance in patients with Class II malocclusion due to mandibular retrusion, using two-dimensional imaging techniques. A total of 11 patients (6 males, 5 females) were included and stratified into two groups (Pre-Peak and Peak) based on skeletal maturity evaluated through the cervical vertebral maturation (CVM) method. Lateral cephalometric radiographs were obtained at the beginning (T0) and end (T1) of treatment and analyzed using DeltaDent software. The appliance was worn full-time, except during meals and oral hygiene procedures, with monthly follow-ups. Significant changes were observed between T0 and T1 across the sample. Comparison between groups revealed statistically significant differences only in the H-C3a1 and vertical height (th) parameters (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the Twin Block appliance proved effective in enhancing mandibular and dental positioning, while also exerting a favorable influence on upper airway development. Full article

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in three public urban health centers in Vlora, Albania, between November 2024 and January 2025. A total of 80 ambulatory patients were recruited using convenience sampling. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using validated questionnaires, including the Adherence Barriers Questionnaire (ABQ), the Patient Satisfaction with Nursing Care Quality Questionnaire (PSNCQQ), and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) for depression screening. Results: The study included 80 ambulatory patients (mean age 66.7 years; 48.7% female), predominantly diagnosed with diabetes (42.5%) and rheumatic diseases (36.3%). All participants reported at least one adherence barrier, with 92.5% experiencing multiple barriers. The most common were financial burden (91.3%) and fear of side effects (77.5%). A significant positive correlation was found between adherence barriers and depression severity (ρ = 0.518, p < 0.0001), while patient satisfaction did not significantly influence adherence barriers (ρ = −0.217, p = 0.053) or depression severity (ρ = −0.004, p = 0.969). Multiple regression analysis showed that higher depression severity (p = 0.0049) was significantly associated with greater adherence barriers, while postgraduate education was associated with fewer barriers (p = 0.0175). Conclusions: Financial burden, fear of side effects, and psychological distress are key barriers to adherence among Albanian ambulatory patients. Although there are limitations inherent to the cross-sectional design and modest sample size, our findings highlight the potential benefit of routine mental health screening, targeted financial support, and improved patient education on medication management within primary care. These insights may help inform future research and interventions aimed at enhancing adherence and overall well-being. Patient satisfaction did not significantly impact adherence or depression. Targeted interventions focusing on financial support, mental health care, and patient education are needed to improve adherence and patient well-being. These findings underscore the need for integrated mental health and adherence support strategies within routine primary care services. Full article

This study evaluated the effects of dietary supplementation with omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids from extruded linseed, alone and combined with Padina pavonica algae extract, on growth performance and metabolic status in fattening rabbits. Sixty New Zealand White rabbits were assigned to three groups, as follows: control (CNT), L (5% linseed), and LPP (3.5% linseed + 0.2% algae extract) from weaning (37 days) to slaughter (85 days). Productive performance was assessed through body weight (BW), average daily gain (ADG), feed conversion ratio (FCR), and feed intake (FI). Blood was sampled at weaning, 60 days, and slaughter and analyzed for insulin, leptin, cortisol, thyroid hormones (T3, T4), glucose, and non-esterified fatty acids (NEFAs). The L group showed significantly higher ADG (41.0 ± 1 g/d) and improved FCR (4.1 ± 0.2) compared to LPP (ADG: 37 ± 1 g/d, FCR: 4.6 ± 0.2; p = 0.001). No differences were observed in final BW or FI among groups (p < 0.001). Insulin peaked at 60 days across all groups (p < 0.001), with the LPP group showing the lowest levels (9.8 ± 0.9 µUI/mL; p = 0.043). T3 and T4 increased significantly with age (p < 0.001), and the T3/T4 ratio varied by diet and time (p = 0.005). Cortisol rose only at slaughter (p < 0.001) and negatively correlated with insulin and thyroid hormones. The results suggest that omega-3-rich nutraceuticals can enhance growth performance without disrupting metabolic balance and may modulate specific hormonal responses due to their bioactive compounds. Background: The widespread use of smartphones and the internet has transformed communication, but excessive use has raised concerns about smartphone and internet addiction, which can lead to psychological, physical, and social issues. The objective of this literature review is to explore the relationship between smartphone and internet addiction and physical activity, particularly focusing on whether physical exercise, especially sports, can serve as a protective factor against addiction. The review aims to examine how physical activity can reduce the negative impacts of addiction and improve overall mental health. Methods: This review synthesizes empirical research on smartphone and internet addiction and its connection to physical activity. It examines studies exploring how addiction leads to physical inactivity and how participation in physical activities, especially sports, can counteract this effect. The review also evaluates research on psychological mechanisms, such as self-esteem, self-control, and emotional resilience, that mediate the relationship between physical activity and addiction. Additionally, it discusses how sociodemographic and contextual factors influence this relationship. Conclusions: The findings consistently show an inverse relationship between smartphone and internet use and physical activity, with physical activity acting as a protective factor against addiction. Sports and other physical activities have been linked to reduced addictive behaviors, enhanced psychological well-being, and improved emotional resilience. Promoting physical activity, particularly sports, along with psychological interventions, appears to be an effective strategy for preventing and treating smartphone and internet addiction. Future research should focus on developing tailored interventions and studying diverse populations to optimize addiction prevention. Full article
