In the 21st century, rapid urbanisation has brought both challenges and opportunities. Smart cities have emerged as innovative solutions to meet the complex demands of urban life. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) serves as the backbone of this transformation, integrating infrastructure, public services, and environmental sustainability. Within ICT, the computing continuum has become a key paradigm for efficient resource management, while Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) enhance urban planning, optimise resource use, and strengthen governance. This paper systematically reviews smart city developments from January 2020 to June 2025, focusing on technological advances and sustainability goals in databases such as Scopus, IEEE Xplore, and Web of Science. By synthesising the literature, it identifies common challenges, implementation strategies, and future directions. The review highlights the central role of the computing continuum and AI, covering enabling technologies, applications, case studies, and deployment challenges. Our findings indicate that the IoT, AI, and data analytics are currently dominant approaches, yet significant gaps remain in citizen participation, equitable access, and long-term governance. Overall, smart cities aim to integrate data, digital technologies, and intelligent infrastructure to improve the quality of life while promoting sustainable, resilient, and inclusive services. Background: Hydromorphone is a semi-synthetic opioid agonist and a hydrogenated ketone of morphine. This study examined hydromorphone use in the United States (US) using three databases. Methods: The distribution of hydromorphone in the US (in grams) was provided by the US Drug Enforcement Administration’s Automated Reports and Consolidated Orders System (ARCOS) by state, zip code, and business type (pharmacies, hospitals, providers, etc.). Hydromorphone prescription claims were also examined using the Medicaid and Medicare Part D programs from 2010 to 2023. Results: Hydromorphone increased by +30.6% by 2013, followed by a decrease of −55.9% by 2023 in ARCOS. Medicaid prescriptions increased by +39.6% by 2015 and decreased by −48.9% by 2023. Medicare Part D claims increased by +8.5% by 2015 and decreased by −31.9% by 2023. There were also pronounced regional disparities in hydromorphone use identified in ARCOS (158.7-fold), Medicaid (17.5-fold), and Medicare Part D (13.7-fold). Conclusions: Hydromorphone use in the US has decreased substantially from 2010 to 2023. Additionally, these findings highlight considerable regional disparities, which may inform targeted opioid stewardship initiatives and guide policymakers to ensure safe and equitable opioid prescribing practices. Scorpion venom is a rich source of bioactive compounds with significant potential for anticancer drug development. Its diverse molecular composition, including neurotoxins, antimicrobial peptides, and enzymes, provides a vast library for therapeutic innovation. Proteomic analyses have characterized venom composition in several species, while further functional assays have clarified their anticancer mechanisms. This review synthesizes current knowledge on scorpion venom-derived peptides with demonstrated anticancer activity, which selectively target ion channels, induce apoptosis, or disrupt tumor microenvironments. Where available, we highlight proteomic studies that have identified these components and discuss their structural features relevant to drug design. We also examine clinical applications and the challenges in translating venom peptides into therapies. The crucial and growing role of proteomics in this field, particularly for venom fractionation, component identification, and structural characterization, is critically evaluated. Full article

Background: Clonazepam is a benzodiazepine drug indicated in all clinical forms of epileptic seizures, various forms of myoclonic seizures, myoclonus and other abnormal movements. At present, it is classified as a hazardous drug requiring special precautions for personnel at reproductive risk, according to a technical document produced by the Spanish National Institute for Safety and Health at Work (INSST), in collaboration with the Spanish Society of Hospital Pharmacy (SEFH). The commercial solutions of clonazepam, for oral and parenteral administration, are supplied by laboratories in glass containers. Repacking in pre-filled polypropylene (PP) syringes, made in the pharmacy service, and in aseptic conditions, may facilitate its administration and reduce the risks to the health or safety of nursing personnel. Nevertheless, there is a lack of stability studies of clonazepam in pre-filled PP syringes. Objectives: To evaluate the physicochemical stability of commercial clonazepam 2.5 mg/mL oral solution and 1 mg/mL parenteral solution repackaged in pre-filled PP syringes under various storage conditions. Methods: A rapid, linear, precise and sensitive high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method for chemical stability studies of Clonazepam 1 mg/mL (parenteral use) and 2.5 mg/mL (oral use) in solution was implemented after repackaging in pre-filled PP syringes. The studies were conducted by measuring concentrations of oral and parenteral clonazepam in pre-filled syringes, at various time points, over 30 days in several different storage conditions: oral clonazepam protected from light in refrigerator and at controlled room temperature exposed to ambient light; parenteral clonazepam protected from light in a refrigerator and at controlled room temperature protected or unprotected from light. Visual aspects and pH change as well as crystal formation were checked to determine physical stability. Results: The degradation of the active ingredient in all groups was less than 10% after 30 days. No evidence of crystal formation, pH and visual aspect changes were observed. Conclusions: Clonazepam 1 mg/mL parenteral solution and 2.5 mg/mL oral solution in pre-filled PP syringes are stable for up to 30 days in the tested conditions. The centralized repackaging of clonazepam in pre-filled PP syringes, connected to a closed safety system, in the pharmacy service, reduces drug manipulation by nursing staff decreasing the risk of occupational exposure. Background/Objectives: Accurate estimation of caloric intake from breastfeeding is essential for understanding infant nutrition during early life. However, most existing models rely on fixed assumptions and do not reflect the natural variability in feeding behaviors and human milk composition. This study aims to provide a realistic estimation of breast milk (BM) caloric intake throughout infancy using a probabilistic approach based on empirical data. Methods: A probabilistic model was developed using four variables: feeding frequency, volume per feeding, caloric density, and infant weight. Systematic reviews were conducted to inform the input values of the first three variables, and meta-analyses were performed when feasible. Infant weight was based on World Health Organization (WHO) growth standards. Variables were stratified by age and integrated into the model through appropriate probability distributions. Monte Carlo simulations were conducted to estimate caloric intake per kilogram of body weight, expressed both per day and per feeding, across all age groups. Results: The model showed a progressive decline in daily caloric intake per kilogram with age, consistent with decreasing feeding frequency and the introduction of complementary foods. In contrast, caloric intake per feeding increased with age. These findings align with WHO energy intake targets during exclusive breastfeeding and reflect expected physiological changes in infant growth and feeding behavior. Conclusions: This study provides a probabilistic framework for estimating BM caloric intake across infancy, accounting for interindividual and age-related variability. It offers a valuable research tool to support future studies on infant nutrition and feeding behavior using realistic, data-driven assumptions. Full article

Over millions of years of evolution, nature provided tools to optimize different functions in animals and plants. Different strategies observed in nature serve as models for solving complex engineering problems. Additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, enables us to produce shapes that would not be possible with traditional subtractive manufacturing. In this way, it is possible to produce complex detailed shapes using an automatic process. Biomimetics involves drawing inspiration from nature and applying it to solve specific engineering challenges, often with the goal of optimization and enhanced performance. Three-dimensional printing enables the replication of complex natural shapes, opening new avenues for innovation. In this paper, we review the state of the art in biomimetics, including studies on mechanical properties, design strategies, manufacturing techniques, and the use of composites. Full article

Plastic injection molding is a widely used manufacturing process for producing plastic components. However, achieving optimal process stability and part quality remains a persistent challenge due to limited real-time feedback during production. The main objective of this study is to present a method to overcome this limitation by integrating in-mold cavity pressure sensors with an Iterative Learning Control (ILC) strategy to optimize key processing parameters autonomously. The ILC methodology established a closed-loop system; over successive production cycles, cavity pressure profiles were analyzed to automatically adjust the holding pressure, holding time, and switchover point. Each iteration refined the parameters based on sensor data, creating a learning-based optimization loop that accelerated the convergence to optimal settings. The methodology was validated by producing an automotive plastic component. The results demonstrate a 100% success rate in correcting ten critical dimensional errors, fulfilling all part tolerances. Additionally, the overall cycle time decreased by 8%, from 55.0 to 50.6 s. Other findings included updates to key process molding parameters, such as reducing holding pressure from 250 to 230 bar and holding time from 18 to 12 s, as well as increasing the switchover point from 41 to 72 mm. This research confirms that combining real-time cavity pressure monitoring with ILC offers a strong, data-driven framework for significantly improving quality, efficiency, and process stability in injection molding. This study analyzes retinal fundus images to distinguish healthy retinas from those affected by diabetic retinopathy (DR) and glaucoma using a dual-framework approach: vascular texture analysis and global color distribution analysis. The texture-based approach involved segmenting the retinal vasculature and extracting eight Haralick texture features from the Gray-Level Co-occurrence Matrix. Significant differences in features such as energy, contrast, correlation, and entropy were found between healthy and pathological retinas. Pathological retinas exhibited lower textural complexity and higher uniformity, which correlates with vascular thinning and structural changes observed in DR and glaucoma. In parallel, the global color distribution of the full fundus area was analyzed without segmentation. RGB intensity histograms were calculated for each channel and averaged across groups. Statistical tests revealed significant differences, particularly in the green and blue channels. The Mahalanobis distance quantified the separability of the groups per channel. These results indicate that pathological changes in retinal tissue can also lead to detectable chromatic shifts in the fundus. The findings underscore the potential of both vascular texture and color features as non-invasive biomarkers for early retinal disease detection and classification. Full article

Background: Tobacco use remains a major public health concern among young adults and is often complicated by co-occurring addictive behaviors. Objective: This study analyzed motivation for change, assessed with the decisional balance framework, in relation to multiple addictions among young smokers seeking treatment. Methods: Ninety-eight participants from the University of Granada enrolled in either an app-based cognitive–behavioral therapy (CBT) program (n = 35) or a traditional face-to-face CBT program (n = 63). Recruitment relied on self-identification and voluntary participation. Standardized instruments were applied to measure nicotine dependence (FTND), behavioral and substance-related addictions (MULTICAGE CAD-4), cannabis dependence (SDS), and motivation for change (DBQ). Logistic and stepwise regression analyses were conducted to identify predictors of treatment choice and motivational outcomes. Results: Younger participants and students were more likely to choose the app-based program. Compulsive buying was linked to perceiving more disadvantages of smoking, whereas sex addiction, cannabis dependence, and other substance addictions were associated with perceiving fewer disadvantages. Conclusions: Treatment preferences and motivational profiles differ according to age, academic status, and co-occurring addictions. These findings highlight the need to tailor smoking cessation strategies to individual profiles and support the role of mobile health tools in engaging digitally oriented populations. Full article

Background: Intraocular lens (IOL) alignment is crucial for optimal performance in presbyopia-correcting designs. The aim was to report a case of a patient with a high angle kappa implanted with the continuous transitional focus (CTF) Precizon Prebyopic NVA IOL. Case presentation: A 51-year-old patient presenting large angle kappa values (0.6/0.8 mm) was implanted with the Precizon Prebyopic NVA IOL and followed-up 1 and 10 months post-surgery. This IOL is designed with a butterfly-shaped central area that allows the orientation of the lens so that the visual axis passes through the wider diameter of the optic zone. Postoperative refraction was −0.25D of cyl at 80° for the right eye and +0.25D −0.50D cyl at 170°. Corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) at the last visit was −0.1 logMAR monocularly and −0.2 logMAR binocularly. Binocular uncorrected distance (UDVA), intermediate (UIVA) and near visual acuities (UNVA) were −0.1, 0.1 and 0.1 logMAR, respectively. The corrected binocular defocus curve exhibited outstanding vision at the 0.00D defocus level and showed a continuous range of functional vision from distance to near. Overall excellent satisfaction was reported, along with low levels of photopic phenomena. Conclusions: Precizon Presbyopic NVA IOL provided satisfactory vision and low levels of photic phenomena in a high angle kappa patient who would potentially be excluded from presbyopia-correcting IOL implantation. Augmented reality features, such as overlaying information in real time, modifying the projected scene, or dynamically adjusting parameters like contrast, zoom, and brightness, show promise in addressing the specific challenges faced by people with low vision. These tailored solutions enhance their visual experiences. When combined with mobile technology, these features significantly improve the personalization of visual aids and the monitoring of patients with low vision. Retiplus emerges as a personalized visual aid and rehabilitation system, utilizing smart glasses and augmented reality technology for visual aid functions, along with a mobile app for visual assessment, aid customization, and usage monitoring. This wearable system quickly assesses visual conditions, providing deep insights into the visual perception of patients with low vision. Designed to enhance autonomy and quality of life, Retiplus seamlessly integrates into indoor and outdoor environments, enabling the programming of rehabilitation exercises for both static and ambulatory activities at home. In collaboration with specialists, the system meticulously records patient interaction data for subsequent evaluation and feedback. A clinical study involving 30 patients with low vision assessed the effect of Retiplus, analyzing its impact on visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, visual field, and ambulation. The most notable finding was an average increase of 61% in visual field without compromising ambulation safety. Retiplus introduces a new user-centered approach that emphasizes collaboration among a multidisciplinary team for the customization of visual aids, thereby minimizing the gap between the perceptions of low vision specialists and technologists regarding user needs and the actual requirements of users. Tenascin-C (TNC) is an extracellular matrix (ECM) protein with key roles in various biological processes, such as embryonic development and tissue regeneration. However, its deregulated expression can contribute to pathological responses, promoting chronic inflammation, fibrosis, or tumor progression. It belongs to the tenascin family, a class of extracellular proteins that interfere with cellular events in both physiological and pathological contexts, interacting specifically with cells and other components of the ECM. TNC has emerged as a key player in the pathogenesis of chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs), including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer (LC), pulmonary hypertension (PH), and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). The influence of TNC on cellular responses, which is mediated by precise interactions with cellular receptors and ligands, triggers complex intracellular signaling cascades associated with the inflammatory response, fibrosis, and tumorigenesis in these CRDs. This review synthesizes recent evidence highlighting the multifaceted roles and underlying mechanisms of TNC in the context of these CRDs. Full article

Background/Objectives: The objective of this study is to compare the optical and visual quality provided by the advanced monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) ISOPure and the standard monofocal IOL MicroPure in cataract patients, using objective and subjective assessments. Methods: This prospective, single-blind clinical study includes 28 patients with cataracts, bilaterally implanted with either the ISOPure or MicroPure IOL. Eligible eyes had no ocular comorbidities and regular corneal astigmatism ≤ 1.00 D. Three months postoperatively, uncorrected distance and intermediate (UDVA, UIVA) and corrected distance and intermediate (CDVA, DCIVA) visual acuities were measured at 4 m, 80 cm, and 66 cm under photopic (85 cd/m2) and mesopic (3.5 cd/m2) conditions. Photic phenomena, including halo and glare, were evaluated. Objective optical quality was assessed using Objective Scattering Index (OSI), Modulation Transfer Function (MTF), Strehl Ratio (SR), and ocular aberrations. Subjective patient satisfaction was evaluated using Quality of Vision (QoV) and Catquest-9SF questionnaires. Results: Under photopic conditions, logMAR DCIVA at 80 cm, UIVA at 66 cm, and DCIVA at 66 cm were 0.18 ± 0.06, 0.25 ± 0.12, and 0.20 ± 0.13, respectively, for ISOPure, and 0.22 ± 0.06, 0.30 ± 0.09, and 0.25 ± 0.09 for MicroPure (p = 0.05, 0.02, and 0.05, respectively). No significant differences were observed in halo/glare size or intensity, OSI, MTF, or SR. However, statistically significant differences were found in higher-order total aberrations for pupil sizes of 3.0, 4.0 mm, and 5.0 mm. Questionnaires indicated greater satisfaction and functional intermediate vision with ISOPure. Conclusions: The ISOPure IOL offers superior intermediate vision without compromising distance vision, delivering a balanced combination of optical quality, functional performance, and patient satisfaction. Background: Peritonitis in peritoneal dialysis and cirrhosis remains common and leads to morbidity. Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) has been evaluated as a rapid adjunctive biomarker. Methods: Following PRISMA-DTA and PROSPERO registration (CRD420251105563), we searched MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, LILACS, Scopus, and Web of Science from inception to 31 December 2024, and ran an update on 30 June 2025 (no additional eligible studies). Diagnostic accuracy studies measuring NGAL in peritoneal/ascitic fluid against guideline reference standards were included. When 2 × 2 data were not reported, we reconstructed cell counts from published metrics using a prespecified, tolerance-bounded algorithm (two studies). Accuracy was synthesized with a bivariate random effects (Reitsma) model; 95% prediction intervals (PIs) were used to express heterogeneity; small-study effects were assessed by Deeks’ test. Results: Thirteen studies were included qualitatively and ten were entered into a meta-analysis (573 cases; 833 controls). The pooled sensitivity was 0.95 (95% CI, 0.90–0.97) and specificity was 0.86 (0.70–0.94); likelihood ratios were LR+ ≈7.0 and LR− 0.06. Between-study variability was concentrated on specificity: the PI for a new setting was 0.75–0.98 for sensitivity and 0.23–0.99 for specificity. Deeks’ test showed evidence of small-study effects in the primary analysis; assay/platform and thresholding contributed materially to heterogeneity. Conclusions: NGAL in peritoneal/ascitic fluid demonstrates high pooled sensitivity but variable specificity across settings. Given the wide prediction intervals and the signal for small-study effects, NGAL should be interpreted as an adjunct to guideline-based criteria—not as a stand-alone rule-out test. Standardization of pre-analytics and assay-specific, locally verified thresholds, together with prospective multicenter validations and impact/economic evaluations, are needed to define its clinical role. The Universities for Fair Trade Programme and Its Contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals in the Spanish University System

This article analyses the role of the Spanish university system in promoting fair Trade (FT) and the sustainable development goals (SDGs), with a particular focus on the Universities for Fair Trade (UxFT) programme. A mixed methodology combining qualitative and quantitative approaches was used to review and analyse the websites of 90 Spanish universities (both public and private) to assess their commitment to FT and the SDGs. This was based on four variables: (1) reference to the SDGs; (2) a structured programme to promote the SDGs; (3) specific actions to promote or raise awareness of the SDGs; and (4) working on FT. The results show that, while most universities include the SDGs in their institutional strategies, only some have structured programmes. Regarding FT, several universities carry out activities linked to this movement, with some actively participating in the UxFT. Public universities demonstrate greater commitment. The SDGs that are most frequently addressed are 12 (Responsible consumption and production), 4 (Quality education) and 13 (Climate action), highlighting the close relationship between FT and sustainability. The study reveals a gap between discursive commitments to sustainability and the actual implementation of FT practices, suggesting that the integration of FT is not automatic even when SDG strategies are present. This has important implications: promoting FT within universities requires not only structured SDG strategies, but also explicit institutional policies, dedicated resources, and greater awareness of FT transformative potential. The findings underscore the need for stronger institutional commitment to move beyond isolated actions and toward a university model grounded in social justice and sustainability. Integrating the UxFT programme more broadly could help foster critical thinking, participatory governance, and more coherent practices aligned with the 2030 Agenda. Full article
