This study investigates the application of the Keyhole–Tungsten Inert Gas Welding (K-TIG) hot-wire filling welding technique with mechanical arc oscillation to weld a 95 mm-thick Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy plate. The root layer thickness achieved with this technique reaches up to 17 mm, with an average filling thickness of 2.5 mm. The weld bead displays a smooth, shiny appearance, and no significant welding defects are observed in the cross-section of the welded joint. Experimental results show that the welded joint consists of the α phase in different forms, as well as fine α+β microstructures. Compared to the base material, both the weld metal and the heat-affected zone exhibit a lower crystallographic texture strength, with more complex texture types. The impact toughness of the welded joint is excellent, with no significant weaknesses. The impact toughness of the weld metal significantly surpasses that of both the base material and the heat-affected zone. The engagement strengthening effect induced by high-current filling plays a crucial role in enhancing the impact toughness of the weld metal. Full article

Laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) is a unique technology that enables manufacturing geometrically complex metal alloys, including Ti-6Al-4V parts. The microstructure of Ti-6Al-4V is determined by its localized thermal history, which is affected by not only the L-PBF process but also the geometry of the part. Understanding the microstructure at specific locations in complex geometries is of great importance in predicting the mechanical performance of Ti-6Al-4V parts. This work investigates the effects of geometric features on the local microstructure. Three geometries, namely, holes, overhangs, and penholders, were designed and used for this study. Three different laser powers, namely 150 W, 250 W, and 350 W, were set to print those geometries. The use of a lower laser power results in improved print quality. While the martensite phase dominates the bulk of the L-PBF Ti-6Al-4V parts, a fine α+β lamellar structure can form at down-skin regions of printed horizontal holes and overhangs. Moreover, the direction of the columnar prime β grain can shift due to directional heat dissipation. The local microstructural evolution after heat treatment is investigated as well. Full article

This study aims to determine the optimal low-temperature stress relieving heat treatment that minimizes residual stresses while preserving corrosion resistance in Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) processed Ti6Al4V alloy. Specifically, it investigates the effects of stress relieving at 400 °C, 600 °C, and 800 °C on microstructure, residual stress, and electrochemical performance. Specimens were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electrochemical techniques. A novel microcapillary electrochemical method was employed to precisely assess passive layer stability and corrosion behaviour under simulated oral conditions, including fluoride contamination and tensile loading. Results show that heat treatments up to 600 °C effectively reduce residual stress with minimal impact on corrosion resistance. However, 800 °C treatment leads to a phase transformation from α′ martensite to a dual-phase α + β structure, significantly compromising passive film integrity. The findings establish 600 °C as the optimal stress-relieving temperature for balancing mechanical stability and electrochemical performance in biomedical and aerospace components. Full article

The study investigates the influence of microstructures on fatigue behavior and failure mechanisms of the α-β titanium alloy Ti6246, fabricated via Powder Bed Fusion-Laser Beam (PBF-LB). In particular, the investigation assesses the effect of two post-processing heat treatments, namely α-β annealing at 875 °C (AN875) and solution treatment at 825 °C followed by aging at 500 °C (STA825), on the alloy’s rotating and bending fatigue behavior. The results indicate that the STA825 condition provides superior fatigue resistance (+25%) compared to AN875, due to the presence of a finer bilamellar microstructure, characterized by thinner primary α lamellae (αp) and a more homogeneous distribution of secondary α lamellae (αs) within the β matrix. Additionally, an investigation conducted using the Kitagawa–Takahashi (KT) approach and the El-Haddad model, based on the relationship between the fatigue limit and defect sensitivity, revealed improved crack propagation resistance from pre-existing defects (ΔKth) for the STA825 condition compared to AN875. Notably, the presence of fine αs after aging for STA825 is effective in delaying crack nucleation and propagation at early stages, while refined αp contributes to hindering macrocrack growth. The fatigue behavior of the STA825-treated Ti6246 alloy was even superior to that of the PBF-LB-processed Ti64, representing a viable alternative for the production of high-performance components in the automotive and aerospace sectors. The Ti-6Al-4V alloy is a typical α + β type titanium alloy and is widely used in the manufacture of aero-engine fans, compressor discs and blades. The working life of modern aero-engine components is usually required to reach more than 108 cycles, which makes the infinite life design based on the traditional fatigue limit unsafe. In this study, through symmetrical loading high-cycle fatigue tests on Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy, a nonlinear cumulative damage life prediction model was established. Further very-high-cycle fatigue tests of titanium alloys were carried out. The variation law of plastic strain energy in the evolution process of very-high-cycle fatigue damage of titanium alloy materials was described by introducing the internal stress parameter. A prediction model for the very-high-cycle fatigue life of titanium alloys was established, and the sensitivity analysis of model parameters was carried out. The results show that the established high-cycle/very-high-cycle fatigue models can fit the test data well. Moreover, based on the optimized model parameters through sensitivity analysis, the average error of the prediction results has decreased from 59% to 38%. The research aims to provide a model or method for predicting the engineering life of titanium alloys in the high-cycle/very-high-cycle range. Full article

The erosion resistance of materials against solid particles is a very important property, especially in the transportation of powders or in aeronautics (dust inside jet engines). There is a strong need to introduce new materials that have higher solid particle erosion resistance than state-of-the-art materials. Thus, in the present work, the solid erosion particles of high entropy alloys (HEAs) based on the Al0.7CoCrFeNi matrix were studied compared to the state-of-the-art stainless steel AISI 304. Furthermore, the effect of the addition of Ti to HEAs on hardness and erosion resistance was investigated. Current research included the development of the chemical composition of a new kind of HEA designed on the basis of thermodynamical calculations performed in CALPHAD, its manufacturing, full characterization involving microstructural and phase analyses, hardness measurements, solid particle erosion tests, and finally, the elucidation of erosion mechanisms. It was found that HEAs showed higher hardness as well as erosion resistance than AISI 304. Moreover, it was found that the increase in Ti content in an HEA resulted in an increase in the hardness and resistance to the erosion of the studied HEA. As the main reason for this phenomenon, the stabilization of the β-BCC phase, suppression of the α-FCC phase, and the appearance of the Ni3Ti phase in the studied HEA were claimed. Full article

In this study, we delve into the intricate microstructural features of Ti-6Al-4V alloy additively manufactured and heat-treated at 800 °C for 4 h. Our in-depth analysis will enable us to gain a better understanding of the β-Ti precipitation process, its dependence on temperature, and its ultimate effect on the overall mechanical properties. As well as α-Ti martensite grains and β-Ti particles interspersed in the α-Ti grain boundaries, there is a third microstructural feature, overlooked by many researchers. This feature is observed as nano-sized particles homogeneously embedded inside the α-Ti laths. Using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, we reveal that these nano-sized features do not constitute a different phase. Instead, they define isolated regions of α-Ti in its relaxed form, surrounded by the heavily strained form of the α-Ti phase. This phenomenon is a result of the “incomplete” precipitation of the β-Ti phase following the heat treatment stage. The straining of the α-Ti phase appears as a shift in the equilibrium atomic position. Full article

The advent of additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, has revolutionized the production of titanium alloys, offering significant advantages in fabricating complex geometries with enhanced mechanical properties. This study investigates the variant-specific deformation mechanisms in HIP-treated TA15 (Ti-6.5Al-2Zr-1Mo-1V) titanium alloy, fabricated via selective electron beam melting (SEBM). The alloy exhibits a dual-phase (α+β) microstructure, where six distinct α variants are formed through the β→α phase transformation following the Burgers orientation relationship. Variant selection during AM leads to a non-uniform distribution of these α variants, with α6 (22.3%) dominating due to preferential growth. Analysis of the prismatic slip Schmid factor reveals that α4–α6 variants, with higher Schmid factors (>0.45), primarily undergo prismatic slip, while α1–α3 variants, with lower Schmid factors (<0.3), rely on basal or pyramidal slip and twinning for plastic deformation. In-grain misorientation axis (IGMA) analysis further reveals strain-dependent slip transitions: pyramidal slip is activated in α1–α3 variants at lower strains, while prismatic slip becomes the dominant deformation mechanism in α4–α6 variants at higher strains. Additionally, deformation twins, primarily {10–12}<1–101> extension twins (7.1%), contribute to the plasticity of hard-oriented α variants. These findings significantly enhance the understanding of the orientation-dependent deformation mechanisms in HIPed TA15 alloy and provide a crucial basis for optimizing the performance of additively-manufactured titanium alloys. Alloys of Ti-10Ta-1.6Zr (wt%) with and without 3 wt% Cu made by arc-melting, heat-treated in two stages and quenched to have α + β microstructures were studied. These alloys were studied for potential replacement of Ti-6Al-4V alloys because Ta and Zr are more biocompatible than Al and V, and copper was added for potential antimicrobial properties. The heat-treated samples were investigated by SEM-EDX, transmission Kikuchi diffraction (TKD) and XRD. When studied at a higher magnification, the heat-treated alloys revealed a bi-lamellar microstructure, consisting of broad α lamellae and β transformed to fine α′ lamellae with various orientations. The fraction β transformed to fine α′ lamellae was higher in the alloy with Cu than that without Cu. Furthermore, copper was found to lower the solubility of tantalum in the β. The hardest alloy was the heat-treated alloy containing Cu, albeit with a wide standard deviation, probably due to the high fraction of martensitically transformed β. Full article

Composition Design of a Novel High-Temperature Titanium Alloy Based on Data Augmentation Machine Learning

The application fields of high-temperature titanium alloys are mainly concentrated in the aerospace, defense and military industries, such as the high-temperature parts of rocket and aircraft engines, missile cases, tail rudders, etc., which can greatly reduce the weight of aircraft while resisting high temperatures. However, traditional high-temperature titanium alloys containing multiple types of elements (more than six) have a complex impact on the solidification, deformation, and phase transformation processes of the alloys, which greatly increases the difficulty of casting and deformation manufacturing of aerospace and military components. Therefore, developing low-component high-temperature titanium alloys suitable for hot processing and forming is urgent. This study used data augmentation (Gaussian noise) to expedite the development of a novel quinary high-temperature titanium alloy. Utilizing data augmentation, the generalization abilities of four machine learning models (XGBoost, RF, AdaBoost, Lasso) were effectively improved, with the XGBoost model demonstrating superior prediction accuracy (with an R2 value of 0.94, an RMSE of 53.31, and an MAE of 42.93 in the test set). Based on this model, a novel Ti-7.2Al-1.8Mo-2.0Nb-0.4Si (wt.%) alloy was designed and experimentally validated. The UTS of the alloy at 600 °C was 629 MPa, closely aligning with the value (649 MPa) predicted by the model, with an error of 3.2%. Compared to as-cast Ti1100 and Ti6242S alloy (both containing six elements), the novel quinary alloy has considerable high-temperature (600 °C) mechanical properties and fewer components. The microstructure analysis revealed that the designed alloy was an α+β type alloy, featuring a typical Widmanstätten structure. The fracture form of the alloy was a mixture of brittle and ductile fracture at both room and high temperatures. Full article

Titanium alloys, especially Ti6Al4V, are widely used in biomedical implants due to their biocompatibility and mechanical strength. However, their high elastic modulus (>100 GPa), compared to that of human bone (10–30 GPa), often causes stress shielding, reducing implant lifespan. To address this, titanium alloys with lower elastic modulus are under development. In this study, Ti-based multi-element alloy with 16 wt.% Nb samples were fabricated using laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) from a premixed powder blend of Ti6Al4V and Nb-Hf-Ti. Processing high-melting Nb-based alloys via L-PBF poses challenges, which were mitigated through optimized parameters, including a maximum laser power of 100 W. Eleven parameter sets were employed to evaluate printability, microstructure, and mechanical properties. Microstructural analysis revealed Widmanstätten structures composed of α and β phases, along with isolated spherical pores. Reduced hatch spacing and slower laser speed led to increased hardness. The highest hardness (~43 HRC) was observed at the highest energy density (266 J/mm3), while the lowest (~28 HRC) corresponded to 44 J/mm3. Elastic modulus values ranged from 30 to 35 GPa, closely matching that of bone. These results demonstrate the potential of the developed Ti-based alloy containing 16 wt.% Nb as a promising candidate for load-bearing biomedical implants. Full article

This study systematically investigates the influence of grain refinement on the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of recycled Al-7Si-0.3Mg-1Fe alloy through the addition of varying concentrations (0–1.25 wt.%) of Al-5Ti-2B master alloy. The synergistic effects of Al-5Ti-2B on the α-Al phase, eutectic Si, and Fe-rich intermetallics were characterized using metallographic analysis, XRD, SEM-BSE imaging, and EDS. In the unrefined alloy, the microstructure consisted of an α-Al solid solution with coarse plate-like eutectic Si, while Fe primarily formed needle-like β-Al5FeSi phases that either surrounded or penetrated the eutectic Si. Increasing the Al-5Ti-2B addition refined both the α-Al dendrites and eutectic Si, while the β-Al5FeSi phase transitioned from coarse to fine needles. The optimal refinement was achieved at a 1% Al-5Ti-2B addition, yielding a tensile strength of 149.4 MPa and elongation of 4.3%. However, excessive addition (1.25%) led to eutectic Si aggregation and β-Al5FeSi coarsening, resulting in mechanical property deterioration and brittle fracture behavior. These findings provide insights into optimizing grain refinement for enhancing the performance of recycled Al-Si-Mg-Fe alloys. Full article

Ti-2Al-9.2Mo-2Fe (2A2F) alloy is a low-cost β-Ti alloy in which the expensive β-stabilizing elements (Ta, Nb, W, Ni) are replaced with relatively inexpensive Mo and Fe for use in low-cost applications in various industries. The 2A2F alloy exhibits excellent mechanical properties such as high specific strength and low elastic modulus compared to conventional steel alloys but is prone to brittleness owing to the formation of the ω phase when heat-treated at relatively low temperatures. Therefore, an appropriate aging treatment should be performed to control the precipitation of the isothermal ω phase and secondary α phase. This study aims to derive the appropriate aging-treatment conditions following a solution treatment at 790 °C for 1 h, which is below the β-transus temperature of 815 °C. The aging treatments are conducted at holding temperatures in the range of 450–600 °C and holding times between 1 and 18 h. At relatively low aging temperatures of 450 °C and 500 °C, the precipitation of the isothermal ω phase resulted in significantly high hardness and compressive strength. As the aging temperature and holding time increased, the ω phase gradually transformed into the secondary α phase, leading to a balanced combination of strength and ductility. However, at excessively high aging temperatures and prolonged durations, excessive precipitation and growth of secondary α phases occurred, which caused a reduction in hardness and compressive strength, accompanied by an increase in ductility. In this study, the effects of precipitation evolution on mechanical properties such as tensile strength and hardness under various heat treatment conditions were comparatively analyzed. Full article

In this paper, the crystal structure, microstructure, and deformation behavior in the Ti-33Nb alloy under furnace-cooling (FC) and water-quenching (WQ) conditions after holding at 950 °C for 0.5 h are reviewed. The stable and metastable phases obtained under FC and WQ heat treatments have significantly different influences on the mechanical properties of this alloy. The furnace-cooling specimens possess a β and α phase at room temperature, while water-quenched specimens are composed of a metastable β phase and martensite α″ phase. According to the results of the nanoindentation test, the hardness value of the FC specimens is 2.66 GPa, which is lower than that of the WQ specimens. It can be attributed to the presence of a large number of α phases. The indentation depth recovery ratio (ηh) and work recovery ratio (ηw) of the WQ specimens are 19.02% and 19.54%, respectively, indicating a better superelastic response than the FC specimens. In addition, the wear resistance (H/Er) and yield pressure (H3/Er2) of the WQ specimens are 0.0282 and 0.0030 GPa, respectively, suggesting a better wear resistance and resistance of plastic deformation. Corrosion Behavior of Shot Peened Ti6Al4V Alloy Fabricated by Conventional and Additive Manufacturing

Ti6Al4V titanium alloy is one of the most studied for its properties after additive manufacturing. Due to its widely use in medical applications, its properties are investigated in various aspects of surface layer property improvement and later compared to conventionally manufactured Ti-6Al-4V. In this study, the corrosion behavior in a 0.9% NaCl solution of shot peened Ti-6Al-4V prepared using direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) was examined using corrosion electrochemical testing and compared with conventionally forged titanium alloy. Shot peening was performed on previously polished samples and subsequently treated with the CrNi steel shots. Two sets of peening pressure were selected: 0.3 and 0.4 MPa. X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), X-ray micro-computed tomography (Micro-CT), scanning electron microscope (SEM) tests with roughness and hardness measurements were used to characterize the samples. The conventional samples were characterized by an α + β structure, while the additive samples had an α’ + β martensitic structure. The obtained results indicate that the corrosion resistance of the conventionally forged Ti-6Al-4V alloy was higher than DMLSed Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The lowest corrosion rates were noted for untreated surfaces of CM/ref and DMLS/ref samples and reached 0.041 and 0.070 µA/cm2, respectively. Moreover, the development of the surface has an influence on corrosion behavior. Therefore, increasing pressure results in inferior corrosion resistance. However, better performance for shot peened samples was reported in the low frequency range. This is due to the refinement of the grain acquired after the peening process. All the results obtained, related to the corrosion behavior, were satisfactory enough that the all samples can be characterized as materials suitable for implant applications. Full article
