Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) as a fascinating conjugated polymer has attracted considerable attention due to its outstanding electronic properties, high physicochemical stability, and unique structure. In this work, we reported the characterization of g-C3N4, which was simply synthesized by thermal polymerization of thiourea, the photocatalytic degradation kinetics, and the pathway of levofloxacin (LEV) using the prepared g-C3N4. The XRD and SEM results confirmed a crystalline graphite structure with a tri-s-triazine unit and stacked sheet-like layers of g-C3N4. The efficacy factor (EF) was compared to different photocatalytic processes to assess the LEV removal performance. g-C3N4 exhibits good stability as a photocatalyst during LEV photodegradation. Radical scavenger experiments revealed that in the oxidative degradation of LEV, O2 and h+ played the determining roles. Moreover, based on the identification of intermediates using liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), the degradation pathway of LEV was proposed. Full article

Kidney transplantation (KT) is a preferred treatment for end-stage renal disease (ESRD) because it offers better long-term survival and cost-effectiveness compared to dialysis. Significant global disparities persist in access to KT, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This study aims to assess the epidemiology and outcomes of KT in LMICs while examining the relationship between a country’s income level and its KT prevalence. A systematic review of the literature was conducted, with searches of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science from inception to 31 May 2024. Relevant articles reporting on the epidemiology and outcomes of KT or ESRD patients undergoing kidney replacement therapy (KRT) in LMICs were included. A total of 8054 articles were identified, with 972 articles selected for full-text screening after initial title and abstract review. Following full-text screening, 35 articles met the inclusion criteria. The data showed significant variation in KRT and KT prevalence across different geographical locations. Higher-income countries within LMICs tended to have higher KT prevalence rates. Barriers such as inadequate healthcare infrastructure, limited financial resources, and insufficient organ donation frameworks were identified as contributing factors to the low KT rates in these regions. The study highlights the disparities in KT access and prevalence in LMICs, underscoring the need for targeted interventions and international collaboration to address these gaps. Efforts to increase both living and deceased donor transplants, expand health system capacity, and incorporate KT in healthcare planning are needed to close this gap. Global partnerships spearheaded by organizations such as The Transplantation Society (TTS) and the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) are crucial for improving KT rates and outcomes in LMICs. This first study investigated the presence of dioxins and furans in river sediments around a craft village in Vietnam, focusing on Secondary Steel Recycling. Sediment samples were collected from various locations along the riverbed near the Da Hoi Secondary Steel Recycling village in Bac Ninh province. The analysis was conducted using a HRGC/HRMS-DFS device, detecting a total of 17 dioxin/furan isomers in all samples, with an average total concentration of 288.86 ng/kg d.w. The concentrations of dioxin/furan congeners showed minimal variation among sediment samples, ranging from 253.9 to 344.2 ng/kg d.w. The predominant compounds in the dioxin group were OCDD, while in the furan group, they were 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDF and OCDF. The chlorine content in the molecule appeared to be closely related to the concentration of dioxins and their percentage distribution. However, the levels of furan isomers did not vary significantly. The distribution of these compounds was not dependent on the flow direction, as they were mainly found in solid waste and are not water-soluble. Although the hepta and octa congeners had high concentrations, when converted to TEQ values, the tetra and penta groups (for dioxins) and the penta and hexa groups (for furans) contributed more to toxicity. Furthermore, the source of dioxins in sediments at Da Hoi does not only originate from steel recycling production activities but also from other combustion sites. The average total toxicity was 10.92 ng TEQ/kg d.w, ranging from 4.99 to 17.88 ng TEQ/kg d.w, which did not exceed the threshold specified in QCVN 43:2017/BTNMT, the National Technical Regulation on Sediment Quality. Nonetheless, these levels are still concerning. The presence of these toxic substances not only impacts aquatic organisms in the sampled water environment but also poses potential health risks to residents living nearby. Full article

Background: Medication adherence in asthmatic patients enhances the effectiveness of treatments, but some studies in low and middle-income countries still show some limitations. Our study aimed to determine if pharmacist-led interventions could increase medication adherence, improve treatment effectiveness, and relieve symptom severity in outpatients with asthma. Methods: We conducted a randomized, controlled trial on 247 asthmatic outpatients (aged ≥ 16) with a 1:1 ratio randomization at the hospitalization time and repeated after 1-month discharge. The primary outcome was to detect the difference in medication adherence between groups. Adherence was assessed by the general medication adherence scale (GMAS). Data collected by questionnaire was coded and entered into SPSS_20 for statistical analysis; Results: 247 patients (123 intervention, 124 control) were enrolled (61.1% male). After intervention, the adherence rate was higher among the intervention group than the control group (94.3% vs. 82.8%, p = 0.001). Patient behavior and knowledge were enhanced in the intervention group (p < 0.05). Asthma symptoms were relieved in the intervention group (p = 0.014). Pharmacist-led interventions on adherence rate were higher with OR: 3.550, 95% CI: 1.378–9.143, p = 0.009. Conclusions: pharmaceutical intervention could improve medication adherence, treatment efficacy, and the outcome should not be taken for granted; further research should be carried out in this regard. Cordyceps militaris is a valued medicinal fungus in folk medicine in East Asia. It contains two major nucleosides, cordycepin and adenosine, which have been reported to have potential antineoplastic, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activities. This paper aimed to study the effect of C. militaris extract on the reproductive function of a mouse model, evaluating possible toxicity, androgenic activity, and protective and rehabilitative effects against damages caused by sodium valproate (VPA). There was no death and abnormalities observed in mice. Androgen activity was also shown in young male rats by an improvement in several sexual organs. The protective effect of C. militaris extract was explained by the gain of sexual organs’ weight, testosterone concentration, and seminiferous tubule size as well as the enhancement of sperm density, alive sperm percentage, and the progressive forward movement of sperm. The pregnancy rate of female rats paired with VPA-administered male rats (500 mg/kg/day) increased proportionally with the higher dose of C. militaris extract. In the rehabilitation study, an incline in the weight of the Cowper’s gland and glans (0.112 g/kg/day) and testicle and prostate (0.336 g/kg/day) as well as an improvement of the sperm forward progressive movement was observed. The percentage of unprogressive sperm and immotile sperm has reduced. These results suggest that C. militaris is a potential supplement to reduce the negative effects of VPA and improve reproductive function, in which the two major constituents cordycepin and adenosine may play an active role. The aqueous extract of kava (Piper methysticum) root is known as a traditional beverage for daily intake in the Western Pacific Islands, such as Fiji, Tonga, and Vanuatu, to induce relaxation and health-beneficial effects. In this study, the antioxidant, anti-hyperuricemia, and antibacterial properties of kava root were investigated through the isolation and purification of bioactive compounds in ten fractions separated by column chromatography (CC). They included six flavonoids, 5-hydroxy-4′,7-dimethoxyflavanone (C1), matteucinol (C2), isosakuranetin (C3), 5,7- dimethoxyflavanone (C4), 2′,4′-dihydroxy-6′-methoxydihydrochalcone (in MC5) and alpinetin (C10), and seven kavalactones, 5,6-dehydrokawain (DK) (in MC5 and C6), kavain (in MC7), yangonin (in MC7 and C8), dihydro-5,6-dehydrokavain (DDK) (in MC9), 7,8-dihydromethysticin (in MC9), dihydromethysticin (in MC9), methysticin (in MC9). The chemical structures of the compounds were illustrated by the analyses of gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), electrospray ionization–mass spectrometry (ESI–MS), nuclear magnetic resonance (1H and 13C-NMR), and X-ray diffraction. The evaluation of the free radical scavenging activity of the isolated substances via the DPPH and ABTS assays revealed that C3 (IC50: ABTS = 76.5; DPPH = 74.8 µg/mL) possessed the strongest antioxidant property. In terms of anti-hyperuricemia activity evaluated via the xanthine oxidase inhibitory in vitro assay, the compound C10 was the most promising inhibitor, revealing an IC50 of 134.52 µg/mL. The two kavalactone mixtures in MC5 and a pure compound C6 inhibited the growth of bacteria Listeria monocytogenes, while MC7 can constrain the development of Klebsiella pneumoniae. This is the first study to isolate, purify, and identify the flavonoids isosakuranetin, 2′,4′-dihydroxy-6′-methoxydihydrochalcone and alpinetin in kava root and report their pharmaceutical potential. The identified bioactive compounds showed potent antioxidant, anti-hyperuricemia, and antibacterial activity and thus can enhance the value of beverages and foods derived from kava root. Full article

In this study, we report on the preparation of copper oxide/strontium titanate/multi-walled carbon nanotube (CuO/STO/MWCNTs) nanocomposites and their photocatalytic activity for degradation of dye under visible light. The crystalline structures of the nanocomposites were investigated by an X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique, which explored the successful fabrication of CuO/STO/MWCNTs nanocomposites, and the cubic STO phase was formed in all samples. For the morphological study, the transmission electron microscope (TEM) technique was used, which had proved the successful preparation of CuO and STO nanoparticles. The energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), dark field scanning transmission electron microscope (DF-STEM-EDX mapping), and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) analysis were performed to evidence the elemental composition of CuO/STO/MWCNTs nanocomposites. The optical characteristics were explored via UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and photoluminescence (PL) techniques. These studies clearly indicate the effect of the presence of CuO and MWCNTs on the visible absorption of the CuO/STO/MWCNTs nanocomposites. The photocatalytic activity of CuO/STO/MWCNTs nanocomposites was evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye under visible light irradiation, following first-order kinetics. Among the different x% CuO/STO/MWCNTs nanocomposites, the 5 wt.% CuO/STO/MWCNTs nanocomposites showed the highest photocatalytic efficiency for the degradation of MB dye. Moreover, the 5% CuO/STO/MWCNTs showed good stability and recyclability after three consecutive photocatalytic cycles. These results verified that the optimized nanocomposites can be used for photocatalytic applications, especially for dye degradation under visible light. Full article

Background: Acromioclavicular (AC) dislocation, one of the most common shoulder joint injuries, can be treated by several surgical methods. However, there are still few records about the treatment quality. This study aims to describe the outcomes of three surgical methods for acromioclavicular dislocation treatment at Viet Duc University Hospital, Vietnam. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 80 patients diagnosed with AC. We retrospectively collected data in the medical records and re-examined the patients. Results: There was no difference between the three groups of surgical approaches relating to the patient’s characteristics, except for the time from the accident to hospital admission. The median length of stay after surgery was highest in the Hook plate group (median (IQR) = 5(2) days), while it was lowest in the K-wire group (median (IQR) = 3(1) days) (p < 0.05). There is statistical significance in the difference of coracoclavicular distance between pre and post-operation in all three surgical method groups (p < 0.001). Conclusion: All of the methods—Hook plate, K-wire, and TightRope—were associated with optimistic outcomes and restored initial anatomy. While the three surgical methods are both safe and effective, the K-wire method is associated with a shorter length of stay and might be economical. Full article

A CuO-loaded SrTiO3 catalyst showed highly photocatalytic activity for H2 evolution. This catalyst was prepared by an impregnation method and characterized by XRD, TEM, BET, XPS, Uv-vis DRS and PL techniques. Under optimum conditions, the best rate of H2 evolution of the CuO-loaded SrTiO3 catalyst is 5811 µmol h−1g−1, whereas it is a mere 34 µmol h−1g−1 for the pure SrTiO3. High efficiency, low cost and good stability are some of the merits that underline the promising potential of CuO-loaded SrTiO3 in the photocatalytic hydrogen. Full article

In recent years, photocatalysis has been used as an environmentally friendly method for the degradation of organic pigments in water. In this study, Ce3+/Ce4+-doped ZrO2/CuO as a mixed semiconductor oxide was successfully prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method. The Ce3+/Ce4+-doped ZrO2/CuO has shown high degradation efficiency of methylene blue (MB), and the maximum degradation percentage was observed to be 94.5% at 180 min under irradiation visible light. The photocatalytic activity increases significantly by doping Ce3+/Ce4+ in ZrO2/CuO for MB degradation. Ce3+/Ce4+ doping is shown to reduce the (e-/h+) recombination rate and improve the charge transfer, leading to enhanced photocatalytic activity of materials. The materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), FTIR, EDS, BET and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). A trajectory tracking control for quadcopter unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) based on a nonlinear robust backstepping algorithm and extended state/disturbance observer (ESDO) is presented in this paper. To obtain robust attitude stabilization and superior performance of three-dimension position tracking control, the construction of the proposed algorithm can be separated into three parts. First, a mathematical model of UAV negatively influenced by exogenous disturbances is established. Following, an extended state/disturbance observer using a general second-order model is designed to approximate undesirable influences of perturbations on the UAVs dynamics. Finally, a nonlinear robust controller is constructed by an integration of the nominal backstepping technique with ESDO to enhance the performance of attitude and position control mode. Robust stability of the closed-loop disturbed system is obtained and guaranteed through the Lyapunov theorem without precise knowledge of the upper bound condition of perturbations. Lastly, a numerical simulation is carried out and compared with other previous controllers to demonstrate the great advantage and effectiveness of the proposed control method. Full article

In this paper, Zr(IV) nitrate solution decomposed from Viet Nam zircon concentrate was the source of zirconium extraction by liquid-liquid extraction (L.L.E). The FT-IR and UV-Vis spectra confirmed the extraction of Zr(IV) by D2EHPA/p-xylenes. There were four stages for the purification of impurities from the Zr matrix. First, the extraction of elements in 3.0 M HNO3 by 50% D2EHPA/p-xylenes was conducted. Second, two scrubbing cycles of impurities using 6.0 M HNO3, 76.5% of the total amount of Zr(IV) were retained in the organic phase, and 23.5% remained in the aqueous phase. Third, the stripping of a macro amount of zirconium from loaded D2EHPA has been effectively carried out using 1.5 M H2SO4 with a stripping efficiency of 99.6%. Fourth, concentrated ammonia was added to the solution Zr(IV) after stripping extraction to form precipitate for calcination at 550 °C for the final products. The refined products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), EDS, XRF, and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The ZrO2 has high purity, is nanospherical, and has a uniform sphere-like morphology with small grain size of less than 30 nm and a bandgap value of about 3.30 eV. Full article

The prognostic role of diabetes mellitus (DM) in advanced enteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) is unclear. Progression free survival (PFS) was assessed in post-hoc analyses of the 96-week, phase III, double-blind, placebo-controlled CLARINET study of lanreotide 120 mg in patients with advanced non-functional enteropancreatic NETs with DM (with/without metformin) and without DM. Of 204 patients, there were 79 with DM (lanreotide, n = 42 {metformin, n = 14}; placebo, n = 37 {metformin, n = 10}) and 125 without DM (lanreotide, n = 59; placebo, n = 66). Median PFS was 96.0 and 98.0 weeks with and without DM, respectively (hazard ratio 1.20 {95% confidence interval 0.79 to 1.82}; p = 0.380). No difference in PFS was observed in lanreotide-treated patients with/without DM (p = 0.8476). In the placebo group, median PFS was numerically shorter with versus without DM (p = 0.052) and was significantly longer in patients with DM and metformin (85.7 weeks) versus without metformin (38.7 weeks; p = 0.009). Multivariable Cox analyses showed that DM at baseline was not associated with PFS (p = 0.079); lanreotide was significantly associated with lower disease progression risk (p = 0.017). Lanreotide efficacy was confirmed in patients with advanced enteropancreatic NETs, regardless of diabetic status; DM was not a negative prognostic factor. A potential antitumor effect of metformin was observed in patients receiving placebo. Full article

(1) Background: This study aims to assess the magnitude of, and factors associated with, depression and anxiety among Vietnamese frontline hospital healthcare workers in the fourth wave of COVID-19; (2) Methods: A hospital based cross-sectional study was carried out within two weeks, October 2020, at a central COVID-19 treatment hospital. Depression and anxiety were measured with PHQ-9 and GAD-7, respectively. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis were applied to recognize variables related to depression and anxiety, respectively; (3) Results: Among 208 frontline hospital healthcare workers, overall prevalence of depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and both symptoms of depression and anxiety was 38.94%, 25.48% and 24.04%, respectively, in healthcare workers. In a reduced model after using multivariate stepwise logistic regression, age (OR = 0.9, p = 0.001), marital status (OR = 7.84, p = 0.027), profession (OR = 0.39, p = 0.028), having experienced traumatic stress following a work event (OR = 46.24, p < 0.001), feeling at very high risk for COVID-19 (OR = 0.02, p < 0.04), and affected by workplace conditions (OR = 5.36, p < 0.001) were associated with the symptoms of depression. With regard to symptoms of anxiety, single status (OR: 12.18, p = 0.002), being medical technician (OR: 68.89, p < 0.001), alcohol use (OR: 6.83, p = 0.014), using pain relief medications (OR: 25.50, p = 0.047), having experienced traumatic stress following a family event (OR: 130.32, p = 0.001), having experienced traumatic stress following a work event (OR: 181.55, p = 0.002), reporting at very high risk for COVID-19 (OR: 29.64, p = 0.011), treating moderate (OR: 6.46, p = 0.038) and severe (OR: 18.96, p = 0.004) COVID-19 patients, and being significantly affected by the community (OR: 6.33, p = 0.003) were increased risk factors for the symptoms of anxiety. Meanwhile, those living with 4–5 people (OR: 0.15, p = 0.011), specializing in infectious disease (OR: 0.13, p = 0.044)/resuscitation and emergency medicine (OR: 0.04, p = 0.046), and having knowledge preparation before participating in COVID-19 (OR: 0.008, p = 0.014) were less associated with the symptoms of anxiety; (4) Conclusions: There was a relatively high prevalence among Vietnamese hospital healthcare workers exhibiting symptoms of depression and anxiety during the ongoing pandemic. Greater attention to training in psychological skills should be suggested for those belonging to a younger age group, being single/widowed/divorced, treating moderate and severe COVID-19 patients, feeling at very high risk for COVID-19, being significantly affected a lot the community or workplace conditions, or experiencing traumatic stress following a family/work event in the past week.
