Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The management of densely populated urban areas, the provision of efficient mobility systems, and the need to mitigate climate change are among the major societal challenges of our time. These challenges have driven the extensive expansion of railway infrastructure in modern cities. Although the economic, social, and environmental benefits of rail transport are widely recognized, its development also raises environmental concerns due to the generation and propagation of vibrations and noise, which can adversely affect the comfort, well-being, and quality of life of people living and working in the vicinity of railway lines.
The expansion and modernization of railway networks require robust methodologies to assess, predict, and mitigate vibration and noise impacts throughout the entire life cycle of railway infrastructure. Therefore, the main objective of this Special Issue is to provide a comprehensive platform for disseminating and consolidating recent advances in the prediction, monitoring, assessment, and control of railway-induced vibrations and noise.
Following the success of the first edition, the second edition of this Special Issue aims to gather high-quality contributions addressing, but not limited to, the following topics:
- Advanced prediction methodologies based on numerical, analytical, empirical, hybrid, and data-driven models for railway-induced vibrations and noise;
- Digital twins, real-time monitoring systems, and predictive maintenance approaches related to railway vibration and noise management;
- Numerical and experimental studies aimed at identifying the main sources of uncertainty within the railway system and determining the key parameters influencing prediction accuracy;
- Optimization and cost–benefit analysis of mitigation strategies considering technical, economic, and environmental criteria;
- Effects of climate change, environmental degradation, and long-term infrastructure ageing on vibration and noise performance;
- Human perception, comfort criteria, annoyance assessment, and health-related aspects associated with railway vibrations and noise;
- Regulatory developments, standards, guidelines, and best practices for environmental impact assessment;
- Performance assessment of conventional and innovative mitigation measures, including resilient track systems, wave barriers, metamaterials, and vibration isolation solutions;
- State-of-the-art reviews and critical assessments of emerging trends and future challenges in railway vibration and noise research
This Special Issue welcomes submissions of original research articles, case studies, technical notes, project reports, review papers, and state-of-the-art discussions that contribute to advancing knowledge and practice in the field of railway-induced vibrations and noise.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Vibration is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.
