Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The human-animal bond is dynamic and influenced by behaviors essential to the health and wellbeing of both. Moreover, the animal and environmental laws are changing in most countries worldwide, highlighting and maximizing the potentials of relationships and interactions. The veterinarian’s role is crucial in supporting high level service to animals and the society. Veterinary forensics, has nowadays been emerged as a distinct branch of veterinary sciences and is developing rapidly. Veterinary forensics covers a wide range of scientific research and practices such as: veterinary forensic pathology (animal necropsy and histopathology), post-mortem changes, estimation of time since death, veterinary forensic entomology, animal crime scene investigation (CSI), veterinary forensic radiology and imaging, veterinary forensic toxicology, animal genetic evidence and DNA analysis, evidence documentation according chain of custody, and moreover veterinary forensic clinical examination of live animals. Areas as wildlife crime and animal agro-crime play an important role within environmental criminology. Veterinary forensic procedures can be applied to the investigation of a variety of medicolegal cases involving possible violations of animal welfare and/or veterinary legislation such as: animal neglect and physical cruelty/abuse, non-accidental injuries, sharp and/or blunt force trauma, firearm animal injuries and ballistics, asphyxia and strangulation, situational injuries/death (thermal, chemical, electrical, hyperthermia, hypothermia, and drowning), animal poisoning, animal sexual abuse, animal abuse in correlation to interpersonal violence and one-health, unlawful killing, animal hoarding, legal investigations in shelter medicine, animal fighting and bite mark analysis, animal sudden death, post-anesthesia deaths and veterinary malpractice. In this Special Issue of Veterinary Sciences: “Advances in Veterinary Forensic Medicine and Pathology” we aim to gather high-quality papers reflecting the progress of veterinary forensics issues in nowadays. Veterinarians and other scientists working in all fields of veterinary forensics are welcome to contribute with in-depth reviews, original full articles, and unique case reports.
