Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Viral hepatitis represents an alarming and complex global public health problem with high prevalence and mortality rates. Although they are caused by several viral agents (HAV, HBV, HCV, HDV, and HEV), the main causes of death are associated with HBV and HCV. Data published by the World Health Organization (WHO) shows that the estimated number of deaths from viral hepatitis increased from 1.1 million in 2019 to 1.3 million in 2022. Of these, 83% were caused by hepatitis B and 17% by hepatitis C. Every day, more than 6000 people are infected and 3500 people die worldwide due to hepatitis B and C infections.
The relevance of viral hepatitis to public health is based on the high number of infected individuals who are still unaware of their serological status, which can result in increased transmissibility and progression to chronic disease, cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and death. It is known that the presence of co-infection with HIV, HDV, HTLV, tuberculosis, and other infections further increases the risk of complications and mortality in viral hepatitis.
For this Special Issue, we invite original research articles and reviews. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following: the epidemiology of viral hepatitis, co-infection with other infectious agents of importance to public health, public health strategies, and the impacts of social and socioeconomic factors on the progression and outcomes of liver disease.
We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Tropical Medicine and Infectious Disease is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs).
