Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue, entitled “Transformation Mechanism and Environmental Effect of Emerging Pollutants”, presents a comprehensive collection of cutting-edge research focused on emerging contaminants. This Special Issue explores the transformation mechanisms and environmental impacts of various emerging pollutants, including endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and heavy metals. Particular emphasis is placed on pollutants such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), organophosphate esters (OPEs), microplastics, nanomaterials, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in diverse environmental matrices, including air, water, soil, food, and indoor environments.

Given the increasing detection frequency and persistence of these pollutants, it is critical to understand their physicochemical transformations, environmental fate, bioaccumulation potential, and long-term ecological risks. This Special Issue welcomes the submission of studies that address both degradation and transformation pathways—biotic or abiotic—as well as the resulting toxic or non-toxic transformation products that may pose new environmental challenges.

This Special Issue especially welcomes the submission of contributions utilizing advanced methodologies, such as multi-omics approaches, network toxicology, computational modeling, and innovative risk assessment frameworks, to elucidate transformation pathways and environmental effects. Furthermore, considering the potential negative impacts of these pollutants on human health, we also strongly encourage related in vitro, in vivo, and epidemiological studies to be submitted. Specifically, studies that explore the interactions between emerging pollutants and biological systems across different levels—from molecular to population—are of particular interest.

In addition to fundamental research, we also encourage manuscripts that contribute to environmental policy development, pollution control strategies, and sustainable chemical design. Interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary studies that integrate environmental science, toxicology, material science, public health, and environmental engineering are also highly welcomed.
