Halogenated and heterocyclic derivatives of polycyclic aromatic compounds, which include halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (HPAHs), polycyclic aromatic nitrogen heterocycles (PANHs), polycyclic aromatic sulfur heterocycles (PASHs), polycyclic aromatic oxygen heterocycles (PAOHs), and halogenated heterocyclic compounds, represent a critical, yet under-investigated, class of environmental contaminants. Unlike their well-studied parent compounds, these compounds often exhibit enhanced persistence, bioaccumulation potential, and toxicity, posing an emerging global risk.
This Special Issue invites contributions that move beyond traditional monitoring to unravel the complete environmental and toxicological profiles of these different polycyclic aromatic compounds. We seek manuscripts that apply non-target screening to identify novel congeners, characterize their ubiquitous occurrence and source apportionment in complex environmental matrices, and clarify their environmental fate and transport pathways. A particular focus is on understanding human and ecological exposure and utilizing bioanalytical tools to assess the combined biological impacts of these organic mixtures. By integrating advanced analytical chemistry with contemporary toxicology, this issue aims to close the critical knowledge gaps necessary for effective risk assessment and regulation of these emerging persistent pollutants.
