Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Sustainable economic development is largely discussed in relation to the prevailing GDP-based economic framework. Attributions such as paid employment and consumption-led growth remain focal points, with reduction in externalities through cradle-to-cradle, zero-waste, and/or carbon neutral production models being promoted as mechanisms to enable sustainability. Arguably, there has been limited discussion regarding the augmentation of human behavior to promote an alternative framework for economic progress. However, the perception of human life as part of the wider ecosystem and the knowledge of the symbiotic relationship human life shares with the Earth affects stewardship responsibility, the anthropocentric perspective defining economic systems and, ultimately, the sustainability of human life on the planet. With increasing understanding of the relationship and interdependence of living systems, there is, seemingly, an opportunity to educate and to foster understanding of the social construction of economic systems, advance understanding of the impact of human resource use and, fundamentally, promote behavior that is consistent with sustainability values as articulated by the Brundtland Commission. This Special Issue focuses on the rationale for human behavioral change to establish sustainable economic development and invites papers from social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences. The themes of focus in this issue (see below) are dominated by questions that, in being answered, may provide the catalyst to drive behavioral change through fostering understanding. Other related themes are encouraged, and will be evaluated based on a submitted abstract; please email [email protected].

Special Issue Themes:

  • Why is sustainability an important objective?
  • How does culture affect economic systems and what impact does an economic system, in turn, have on culture?
  • Why has a single economic framework dominated the definition of progress?
  • How can an alternative indicator of progress be implemented?
  • What is the purpose of an economic system?
  • How can sustainability be presented as a universal human value?
  • What are the most significant impediments to achieving a sustainability focus when it comes to economic progress?
  • How can we engage stakeholders to promote sustainability values?
