Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues:

This Special Issue focuses on advancements and innovations on Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and Rational Use of Energy (RUE) for insular territories, aiming to ensure high and secure renewable energy sources penetration in local energy systems, with the ultimate objective of their contribution to the sustainable development of local insular communities. The Special Issue aims to cover topics on:

  • The technical field, examining different technologies and systems towards high RES penetration, such as:
    • hybrid power plants for either electricity or thermal energy production
    • Smart Grids applications;
    • district heating and cooling systems;
    • combined heat and power cogeneration systems;
    • RES introduction in on-shore and offshore transportation sector.
  • The social, economic, environmental, and political field, focusing on sustainable development of local communities, through:
    • stimulation of local communities and capacity building strategies, aiming at the active involvement of local communities in the energy transition process;
    • formulation of regional or central policies aiming to support the insular communities’ development through RES and RUE projects;
    • impacts of RES and RUE projects on natural environment and existing human activities;
    • potential synergies of RES and RUE projects with existing commercial activities (e.g., tourism).

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
