Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The attention on sustainable management has shifted from local operations optimization to consideration of the entire business processes including product development, production, logistics, consumption, customer service, disposal, and post-disposal management. A manufacturing enterprise has to implement sustainable practices across its whole functions including operations, human resource and organizational behavior, accounting, strategy, marketing, ethics and corporate governance, entrepreneurship, and innovations on business models and new technologies.

Given the importance of sustainability development on manufacturing enterprises, this Special Issue seeks to explore and explain the frontier for integrating sustainable management with on-going business process management efforts in manufacturing enterprises.

Society has gradually realized that companies’ actions have consequences. Companies can fulfill their accountability to society by disclosing information beyond their financial data, providing better decision making for stakeholders. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the impact of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on earnings persistence (EP) for the moderator roles of operational efficiency and financing cost for the companies listed on the Tehran Stock Exchange. For this purpose, the statistical population consists of 714 firm-year observations from 2014 to 2020 (7 years). A multivariate regression method was used based on the panel data analysis method to test the research hypotheses. The results indicate that corporate social responsibility for earnings persistence has a positive and significant relationship with the moderator role of operational efficiency, but is unrelated to the moderator role of financing cost. The majority of the prior research in this field has focused on developing countries. An international perspective is critical, and this study helps draw a more contextualized picture of sustainability than before. Full article

With the continuous development of information and communication technology, the development of smart product service systems (smart PSS) has become a crucial approach for enterprises to establish a competitive advantage. However, there is still a lack of clarity regarding the impact process of smart PSS on competitive advantage. This paper aims to explore the impact mechanism of smart PSS on competitive advantage from the perspective of value creation, using an intelligent connected vehicle supplier as a case study. The findings reveal that the composition of smart PSS, including smart technology, smart products, and smart services, influences competitive advantage through the value creation process, which involves relationship construction, relationship operation, and value release. Under the smart PSS environment, changes occur in subject relationships, resources, and key elements. In the context of smart PSS, deep cooperation between enterprises and partners focuses on ecological advantages, while general cooperation emphasizes benefit advantages. This research provides valuable insights into the impact of smart PSS composition on competitive advantage and offers reference values for organizations to establish competitive advantage objectives. The Chicago School believes that more efficient firms will earn higher profits, leading to higher market concentration. How does this apply to situations in specific industrial environments? The output value and import and export volume of China’s wooden furniture industry rank among the highest in the world, but the industry’s profit growth rate is decreasing. Is this phenomenon caused by a problem in the growth mode of the industry itself? It is especially important to understand the real characteristics of the industry. The purpose of this study is to discover the characteristics and trends of China’s wooden furniture industry and to clarify the direction of the future development of the industry. Market concentration index, data envelopment analysis and Engel-Granger cointegration test were applied to this study respectively. Based on the theory of industrial organization, this study conducted an empirical analysis in three stages. The results show that China’s wooden furniture industry is still a labor-intensive industry, the increase in market concentration mainly depends on the expansion of the labor force, and there is a conflict between industrial technological progress and scale expansion. It has also been confirmed in theory that the market structure is affected by efficiency. However, the way and degree of impact depend on the level of industrial development. This study can provide a reference for the formulation and adjustment of macro policies for industrial development, improve the understanding of industry characteristics and trends at the enterprise level to help enterprises achieve transformation, and offer international and domestic investors a reference point for investment decisions at the market level. This study combines macro-level "industry" with micro-level "enterprise" to make the study more comprehensive and systematic, and fills in the gaps in related research in the field. Full article
