Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The concept of "microplastics" (MPs) was first introduced in 2004 and refers to plastic fragments and particles less than 5 mm in diameter. Compared to 'white polluting' plastics, the danger of MPs is reflected in their tiny particle diameter. In fact, MPs range in size from a few microns to a few millimetres, and are a mixture of non-uniform plastic particles in a variety of shapes that are often difficult to distinguish with the naked eye, which is why they are more harmful to the environment than ordinary non-degradable plastics.
In 2018 China's Ministry of Environment and Ecology confirmed the presence of MPs in seawater, as well as in the seafloor and submarine sediments. In more recent research, in March 2022, scientists detected MP contamination in human blood for the first time, and in April of the same year British scientists found MPs deep in the lungs of living people for the first time. These findings undoubtedly demonstrate the public health risks of MPs as a new type of pollutant.
This Special Issue (SI) will focus on the latest research and applications of the environmental chemistry of MPs from around the world. This Special Issue will focus on the environmental behaviour, biological effects and treatment technologies of MPs, providing a specific perspective on health and ecological sustainability.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
