Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In the past several decades, the concepts and empirical analyses of healthy living environments have increasingly gained attention in interdisciplinary research and decision-making. Severe health effects of air and noise pollution on the urban population have been identified. New concepts of urban health and environmental burden of disease studies have been applied to empirically show the relevance and importance of taking action. At the same time, advances in geoinformation sciences techniques (e.g., mobile data assessments, remote sensing data) and methods (e.g., indicator developments such as walkability or bikeability concepts) have led to a growing number of available datasets and new possibilities for empirical studies. The aim of this Special Issue is to explore current developments in geoinformation sciences for studying urban environment and health, and invites best-case studies for empirical analyses in this field.

Topics: In line with the context and aims outlined above, we invite original research contributions on the following topics (may be extended):

  • Innovative geoinformation science methodologies and data collection approaches to assess urban health relevant issues
  • Relevance of spatial scale in urban health studies (individual-level to aggregated level analyses)
  • Comparative analysis of indicators across different urban settings (e.g., walkability, bikeability)
  • New empirical approaches to urban health or the environmental burden of disease in urban areas
  • Big data and citizen science for urban health analyses
  • Spatial analysis and modelling of urban health

Manuscript Submission Information

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
