Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The pursuit of sustainable development has placed transportation systems at a critical juncture, demanding solutions that simultaneously address efficiency, environmental stewardship, and social equity. Within this framework, road safety emerges not as a standalone concern but as a foundational pillar and a critical performance indicator for truly sustainable mobility. This Special Issue, titled "Sustainable Transportation Engineering and the Road Safety," explores the intrinsic and synergistic relationship between advancing transportation engineering practices and achieving substantive improvements in road safety outcomes. We will bridge the gap between theoretical sustainable design principles and their practical, safety-enhancing implementations across all facets of transportation infrastructure, vehicles, and operations.

We invite high-quality original research and review articles that investigate innovative engineering approaches, technologies, and integrated methodologies contributing to a safer and more sustainable transport future. Contributions are encouraged from diverse perspectives, including, but not limited to, the design and maintenance of resilient and safety-inherent roadway infrastructure; the development and impact assessment of intelligent transportation systems (ITSs) and connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) via safety and sustainability metrics; the application of advanced materials and construction techniques for durable and safe infrastructure with lower environmental impact; data-driven analytics, simulation, and predictive modeling for proactive safety management; human factor engineering and the design of safe systems for all road users, particularly vulnerable road users (VRUs); and lifecycle assessment frameworks that jointly evaluate safety, environmental, and economic performance.

This Special Issue serves as a platform for researchers, engineers, and policymakers to share cutting-edge findings and foster interdisciplinary dialogue. Our ultimate goal is to encourage the integration of safety as a core, non-negotiable objective within the paradigm of sustainable transportation engineering, thereby supporting the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to health, cities, and infrastructure.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
