Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Land transport is an important influencer of personal and societal wellbeing as well as the wellbeing of the planet. When done well, it supports economic productivity and social inclusion though sometimes at a high price to the environment. Sustainable land transport is about all elements in the transport triple bottom line (economic, social, and environment, including health and safety therein) working together to drive better outcomes for society and the planet. When integrated with strategic land use planning, the benefits of improved and sustainable land transport facilities/services can be very substantial. Governments that ignore such interdependencies, however, do so at their peril and at risk to sustainability outcomes that matter to their communities and to the planet.

This Special Issue will take a close look at what sustainable land transport means and what constitutes best practice in delivery and how this can be achieved. For example, in urban land transport plans, the editors have identified around twenty different ways of expressing what sustainable land transport might mean in terms of social outcomes. Such an evident lack of clarity in the purpose means that it is very difficult to assemble a body of evidence to inform better practice in this field. Economic and environmental goals and dependencies, however, seem to be better understood.

For this Special Issue we are seeking papers taking economic, social, and/or environmental perspectives on land transport sustainability. To maintain some consistency of approach, the papers will be expected to:

  • Discuss what sustainability means in the context of their proposed paper’s subject matter toward enabling further understanding of the (sometimes) fuzzy concept of sustainability;
  • Highlight what is best practice in the paper’s subject area, who delivers best practice, and what sets them apart (e.g., leadership; institutional arrangements?);
  • Explain how the subject of the paper improves sustainability outcomes from land transport;
  • Identify the key requirements for implementation of the sustainability initiative(s) discussed in the paper.

We welcome papers from all over the globe to illustrate how challenges and solutions may vary substantially, depending on context.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
