Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Among all resources, water is paramount and plays a multidimensional role in the water–energy–food nexus; however, the record increase in population growth, ever-dwindling freshwater resources, and increased water pollution have led to an unprecedented freshwater crisis. The major challenge for the sustainable water–energy–food nexus is to augment water supply beyond what is obtainable from the hydrological cycle. This has prompted research and development aimed at discovering efficient means for producing freshwater and reusing wastewater with minimal energy consumption.
Recent research developments in nanotechnology have produced remarkable feats in various environmental fields, including wastewater treatment and water desalination. The scientific advancements in the past decade have demonstrated that nanoengineering-based technologies can be highly instrumental in offering effective and practical solutions to the water crisis. The unique and distinctive characteristics of the nanostructured materials and composites make them highly desirable for water purification and wastewater treatment applications. Such functional nanostructured materials have been established in developing advanced composite membranes, highly efficient photo/electro-catalysts, and nano-adsorbent materials to improve conventional processes' performance, energy efficiency, and longevity.
This Special Issue, “Innovative Nanotechnology-based Solutions for Sustainable Water and Wastewater Treatment”, focuses on the advancements in the application of functional nanomaterials and nanobubble technology in water and wastewater treatment processes. The aim is to provide a platform for researchers to report advances in innovative nanotechnology-based solutions to stimulate sustainable water and wastewater treatment options. In this regard, I would like to invite the contribution of original scientific research works as well as review articles related, but not limited, to the following topics:
- Synthesis and application of advanced nanostructured materials for wastewater treatment.
- Nanocomposite separation membranes for wastewater treatment and water desalination.
- Nanomaterial-based photocatalytic/electrochemical processes for wastewater treatment.
- Nanobubbles in water and wastewater treatment.
- Nanosensors in wastewater quality monitoring.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
