Biodiversity Indicators for Ecological and Sustainable Conservation in Forests

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We invite contributions that address the benefits and challenges of Sustainability of Biodiversity and Ecological Conservation in Forests in managed and unmanaged forests.

Monitoring biodiversity in European forests through the study of ecological indicators (e.g., stand structure, deadwood, and microhabitats) is necessary to support and strengthen ecologically sustainable management. Indicators are quantitative, qualitative, or descriptive parameters that correspond to a specific criterion, and that can be measured over time based on field surveys and remote sensing data.

Accurate and timely information on forest biodiversity is necessary to assess the conservation status of forest ecosystems and to support management at the stand and landscape level.

Furthermore, microhabitats have recently attracted the attention of scientists as indicators for monitoring forest biodiversity, with a complementary role compared to common indicators such as deadwood and large trees.

Considering that the use of biodiversity indicators in forest monitoring has increased in recent decades as a tool to support forest management, this upcoming Special Issue on “Biodiversity Indicators for Ecological and Sustainable Conservation in Forests” seeks original research papers on the conservation status of forest biodiversity at the stand and landscape level.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
