Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The urgency of climate change, biodiversity loss, resource scarcity, and widening social inequality makes sustainable development the defining challenge of the 21st century. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) call for transformative, evidence-based solutions that place scientific literacy, technological innovation, and inclusive economic growth at the service of people and the planet. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education is uniquely positioned to drive this transformation by equipping learners of all ages with the systems-thinking, problem-solving, and digital skills needed to design, evaluate, and scale sustainable interventions, from low-carbon energy systems and circular-economy materials to climate-smart agriculture and equitable water management.

In this Special Issue, we aim to explore the intersection of STEM education and sustainable development, focusing on how educational practices, curricula, and policies can promote sustainability across all levels of education. We are particularly interested in research that examines innovative teaching methodologies, curriculum design, technology-enhanced learning, assessment strategies, and interdisciplinary approaches that link STEM learning to sustainability outcomes.

We welcome research papers, case studies, and review articles on the following or related topics:

  • Innovative STEM teaching methodologies integrating sustainability principles;
  • Curriculum development for sustainability-focused STEM education;
  • Assessment of sustainability competencies, knowledge, and attitudes in STEM learners;
  • Interdisciplinary approaches connecting STEM education with environmental, social, and economic sustainability;
  • Technology-enhanced learning and digital tools supporting sustainability in STEM education;
  • Policies, governance, and institutional practices promoting STEM for sustainable

We look forward receiving contributions that position STEM education as a catalyst for achieving the SDGs and building resilient, equitable, and sustainable societies.
