Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Environmental pollution remains a critical challenge for ecosystems and human health worldwide. Advances in analytical chemistry, environmental monitoring, and bioindicator-based approaches combined with ecological risk assessment have improved our understanding of contaminant sources, their transport and effects, and the potential risks to organisms and humans. Moreover, advances in analytical methodologies and new technical capabilities, such as more sensitive instruments and non-target screening, are able to detect lower concentrations and enhance the identification of a greater number of pollutants of interest. Validation of these methods in specific environmental matrices is of utmost importance to rely on the results obtained. The principles of Green Analytical Chemistry must be considered in these environmental analyses. This Special Issue aims to gather cutting-edge research that addresses the detection, quantification, and assessment of pollutants in diverse environmental matrices, including air, water, soil, and biota. We particularly welcome studies on emerging contaminants, legacy pollutants, and the integration of novel analytical methods for high-resolution monitoring. Contributions exploring spatial and temporal trends, contaminant fate and transport, and risk assessment are highly encouraged. This Special Issue aligns with Sustainability’s scope by promoting research that informs effective environmental management and sustainable solutions to pollution challenges.
Suggested themes include the following:
- Monitoring of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and emerging contaminants.
- Analytical method development and validation for environmental matrices.
- Bioindicator and biomonitoring studies.
- Spatial and temporal trends of contaminant distribution.
- Environmental risk assessment and mitigation strategies.
- Policy and management implications of pollutant monitoring.
- Original research articles and reviews are welcome.
We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
