Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The rapid acceleration of advanced manufacturing, encompassing additive, digital, and smart technologies, offers powerful opportunities to transform production systems and innovation cycles. At the same time, global sustainability challenges demand new approaches to reduce waste, energy use, and emissions. Central to this transition is design: early decisions can determine material selection, manufacturing methods, product longevity, and end-of-life options. By embedding sustainable principles such as circular economy models, design for disassembly, and resource efficiency from the outset, advanced manufacturing can deliver innovation with lasting environmental and societal benefits.
This Special Issue, “Advances in Sustainable Design for Advanced Manufacturing”, seeks to advance our understanding of how sustainable design principles, technological innovation, and system-level strategies can shape the future of manufacturing. We invite interdisciplinary contributions from engineering, design, and policy that highlight pathways towards sustainable production.
In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Sustainable design approaches: Design for disassembly, remanufacturing, circular economy models.
- Advanced manufacturing technologies: Additive, digital, and hybrid methods for sustainable outcomes.
- Digital and smart solutions: AI, machine learning, and digital twins supporting decision-making.
- Energy and emissions reduction: Strategies for waste minimisation, energy efficiency, and carbon reduction.
- Assessment methodologies: Advances in LCAs, metrics, and sustainability frameworks.
- Policy and systems perspectives: Supply chains, industrial ecosystems, standards, and governance.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
