Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Because of economic changes and increasing energy pressure, the manufacturing industry is facing transformative pressure. Many green manufacturing products have been created. Under equal conditions, green products have gained more popularity because of their ecological friendliness and positive contributions to society. However, investment in green manufacturing is enormous. It requires enterprises to upgrade and transform their supply chain, industrial chain, and technology chain. During this process, a considerable number of enterprises have failed to transform, and have even lost, their original advantages.

Currently, China is vigorously promoting carbon neutrality goals, while the industrial transformation guided by new quality productivity is accelerating. At the same time, a service-oriented manufacturing model that integrates manufacturing and services is being vigorously constructed. We hope to see whether companies can better promote sustainable manufacturing under the guidance of these strategies. Can enterprises establish a sustainable ecosystem to create green products that match their competitive advantages instead of losing benefits in pursuing green activities? In this context, this Special Issue, ‘Ecodesign of Products and Sustainable Manufacturing’, has been proposed. We welcome research papers related to green manufacturing, ecosystems, and new quality productivity. This may specifically involve one or more of the following research topics:

  • Evolution analysis of green products based on service-oriented manufacturing;
  • Analysis of the development of sustainable manufacturing industry under the guidance of new quality productivity;
  • Research on sustainable manufacturing innovation based on a niche or an ecosystem;
  • Exploration of green innovation networks for manufacturing enterprises;
  • Sustainable development strategies for manufacturing enterprises;
  • Analysis of the government's strategies, policies, and practices in sustainable manufacturing;
  • The construction of sustainable manufacturing systems in developing countries;
  • Examples of sustainable manufacturing in developed countries.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

The ecological transformation of industrial enterprises is crucial for promoting sustainable development, improving energy efficiency, and boosting environmental quality. This study provides empirical insights into the relationship between digital commerce and the ecological transformation of manufacturing firms, using panel data from Chinese A-share-listed manufacturing businesses from 2011 to 2021. The findings demonstrate that digital commerce significantly accelerates the environmental transition of manufacturing firms, particularly within established organizations, competitive sectors, and non-renewable energy industries. Mechanism analysis reveals that advancements in digital commerce improve the breadth, quality, and sustainability of green technology innovation. Examining threshold effects identifies a distinct threshold in the cumulative impact of green technological improvements, beyond which digital commerce facilitates the ecological transition of industrial firms. Manufacturing enterprises need to optimize the use of digital tools and provide more efficient solutions around resource allocation, so as to gain an advantageous position in the green supply chain.
