Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
In response to the growing and undeniable impacts of climate change on natural and economic systems, we are honored to invite you to submit your work to the Sustainability Special Issue “Climate Change-Induced Tourism Destination Shifts and Strategies for the Sustainable Adaptation”.
(1) The central focus (a) of this Special Issue is to investigate the inextricable link between the physical transformations of natural landscapes and the resulting spatial and structural shifts in global nature tourism. Its scope (b) is intentionally broad and interdisciplinary to capture the complexity of this phenomenon. We welcome contributions from geography, environmental science, economics, sociology, and tourism studies, covering topics that include, but are not limited to, modeling shifts in tourist flows, analyzing the socio-ecological resilience of destinations, adaptation strategies, new business models, and the role of policy and governance in managing this transformation. The purpose (c) of this Issue is to assemble cutting-edge, groundbreaking research to create a comprehensive knowledge base that will support stakeholders—from policymakers to local communities—in building a more resilient and sustainable future for the nature tourism sector.
(2) This Special Issue aims to usefully supplement the existing literature by explicitly bridging the gap between research documenting biophysical changes (e.g., melting glaciers, coastal degradation) and studies analyzing socio-economic responses to these changes (e.g., shifts in demand, destination decline, and emergence). While much of the literature focuses on either climate impacts or general adaptation strategies, we seek to synthesize these two domains. We wish to promote a geographical approach that analyzes the concrete, place-based dynamics of “destination substitution” and the formation of “new routes”. In doing so, this Issue will offer a more holistic and forward-looking perspective on the future of tourism, moving beyond static vulnerability assessments toward a deeper understanding of the dynamic processes driving transformation.
We look forward to your contributions enriching the discourse on this highly relevant and topic.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
