Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In an era defined by climate urgency, resource constraints, and evolving societal expectations, sustainability has become the cornerstone of responsible innovation. The integration of sustainability principles into product design and development is no longer a niche consideration but a fundamental imperative for achieving long-term environmental, economic, and social viability. Concurrently, the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) presents transformative opportunities to reimagine these processes. AI-driven methodologies offer unprecedented capabilities in simulation, optimization, predictive analytics, and generative design, enabling a paradigm shift towards more efficient, circular, and human-centric sustainable solutions.

This Special Issue, titled “Advance Research on Product Design and Sustainable Product Development,” seeks to address the critical intersection of sustainability science, design innovation, and cutting-edge computational intelligence. We aim to curate high-quality research that tackles both the profound challenges and novel opportunities in this domain. Submissions are encouraged to present rigorous theoretical frameworks, innovative methodologies, and insightful case studies that demonstrate tangible impacts.

We welcome original research articles, comprehensive reviews, and short communications. Research areas may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • AI for sustainable design theory and frameworks;
  • AI-driven lifecycle engineering;
  • Generative AI for sustainable product design;
  • Data-driven sustainable material selection and innovation;
  • Human-centric and behavioral sustainability;
  • Digital twins for sustainable product development;
  • AI-enabled circular economy systems;
  • Multi-objective optimization for sustainability;
  • Sustainability performance evaluation and decision support;
  • Cross-disciplinary perspectives, such as studies integrating social science, economics, and policy analysis with technical design and AI methods for holistic sustainable development.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
