Dear Colleagues,
Sustainable agriculture is the only long-term solution for meeting the increasing global demand for food while preserving the environment and natural resources. Livestock production is an integral component of agricultural systems and contributes to sustainability through adaptation to economic, social, and environmental conditions. Livestock breeding is currently undergoing rapid change driven by the digitalization of phenotypic data collection, sensor-based monitoring, advances in genotyping, and the development of large-scale data resources (big data). These technologies enable more accurate genetic improvement of livestock breeds and support simultaneous selection for production traits, product quality, and functional traits. Along with productivity and quality, robustness is increasingly recognized as a key selection criterion in sustainable livestock breeding. Local breeds not only have economic and cultural importance but also represent valuable genetic resources for enhancing the resilience of livestock production systems. The International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists emphasizes the sustainable management of rangelands as globally important ecosystems, with a focus on traditional pastoral systems and the role of local breeds in their conservation. Sustainable agriculture also depends on healthy soil systems, including balanced soil organic matter dynamics and nutrient cycling. Grazing and manure management play an important role in maintaining soil fertility and agroecosystem stability. Livestock breeding and sustainable agriculture therefore constitute closely interconnected systems, and a better understanding of their interactions is essential for optimizing future livestock breeding strategies and farming practices. This Special Issue aims to bring together scientists from around the world to share research findings and practical experiences, thereby supporting new and integrated approaches to livestock breeding and sustainable agriculture.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
