Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue, titled ‘Advances in Water and Sediment Quality Assessment, Treatment Technologies, Pollution Control, and Resource Reuse’, will focus on interdisciplinary research that addresses the assessment, protection, and improvement of surface water quality and the condition of bottom sediments in the context of sustainable water resource management.
This Special Issue will emphasize modern methods for evaluating and improving the quality of aquatic environments, with a particular focus on persistent pollutants, including heavy metals and toxic anthropogenic compounds, and their impacts on water bodies and sediment deposits.
The scope of this Special Issue includes, but is not limited to, the following:
- Methods for the chemical and biological monitoring and assessment of water and sediment quality;
- Identification of contaminants and sources of contamination;
- Analysis of contaminant transport, accumulation, and transformation processes;
- Ecological risk assessment;
- Sediment remediation strategies;
- Water resources management;
- Advanced and nature-based water-treatment technologies;
- Reuse of resources such as treated water, nutrients, and energy, in line with the principles of the circular economy.
The purpose of this Special Issue is to integrate current scientific and technological knowledge in the field of aquatic environmental quality and to provide a platform for the exchange of experience between researchers, engineers, and decision-makers. Our aim is to support the development of scalable, sustainable, and effective solutions for protecting and restoring water and sediment systems.
This Special Issue complements the existing literature by expanding the focus from traditional water quality assessment to include bottom sediments as a critical component of aquatic ecosystems and pollutant reservoirs. By bridging basic research with applied strategies, this Special Issue will offer added value for the advancement of pollution diagnostics, environmental monitoring, and ecological restoration. This Special Issue further contributes to the development of practical tools and knowledge that support the global and local implementation of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals around water management.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
